Patch Burning On Grasslands: An Alternative Approach For Rangeland Management, Jake Delwiche Jan 2009

Patch Burning On Grasslands: An Alternative Approach For Rangeland Management, Jake Delwiche

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

Large grazing ungulates—notably cattle, elk and American bison—if given a choice exhibit a grazing preference for regrowth on recently burned areas of grassland. Traditional rangeland management approaches that minimize inherent rangeland heterogeneity are increasingly understood as counter to the evolutionary history of rangeland. Heterogeneity is defi ned as variation in the characteristics of vegetation including species, biomass, and height. Recent research now fi nds an alternative approach to rangeland management through patch burning, giving a variegated texture to the grazing land and more closely simulating the earlier evolutionary pattern of much North American rangeland. Patch burning creates a mosaic of …

The Forest, The Fire And The Fungi: Studying The Effects Of Prescribed Burning On Mycorrhizal Fungi In Crater Lake National Park, Carol Anna

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

A first-of-its-kind study, conducted in a forest of old-growth ponderosa pine and white fi r in Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park, explored the relationships among seasonal prescribed burning, an array of soil attributes, and mycorrhizal fungal fruiting patterns. This three-fold approach not only made the study unique, but also enabled researchers to separate the effects of fi re treatment from the effects of soil attributes on fungal fruiting patterns. The study’s site encompassed three different prescribed burn treatments—applied in the early spring, late spring, and fall of 2002—as well as non-burned control plots. Analyzing statistics with multiple variables, the researchers …

His Final Homily: Pope John Paul Ii's Death As An Affirmation Of His Life's Message, Joesph M. Valenzano Jan 2009

His Final Homily: Pope John Paul Ii's Death As An Affirmation Of His Life's Message, Joesph M. Valenzano

Communication Faculty Publications

Every Sunday morning, a member of the Roman Catholic clergy addresses his flock after a reading from one of the Gospels. These homilies ordinarily last between 10 and 20 minutes and allow the priest an opportunity to interpret the Gospel message from that day's reading, as well as discuss how that message relates to contemporary events and issues.

During the final two months of his life, Pope John Paul II provided a longer, more powerful symbolic homily to the world. The message summarized his positions on freedom, suffering, and the dignity of human life.

The Evolution Of Food Preferences In Coccinellidae, José Adriano Giorgi, Natalia J. Vandenberg, Joseph V. Mchugh, Juanita A. Forrester, S. Adam Ślipiński, Kelly B. Miller, Lori R. Shapiro, Michael F. Whiting Jan 2009

The Evolution Of Food Preferences In Coccinellidae, José Adriano Giorgi, Natalia J. Vandenberg, Joseph V. Mchugh, Juanita A. Forrester, S. Adam Ślipiński, Kelly B. Miller, Lori R. Shapiro, Michael F. Whiting

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Despite the familiarity and economic significance of Coccinellidae, the family has thus far escaped analysis by rigorous phylogenetic methods. As a result, the internal classification remains unstable and there is no framework with which to interpret evolutionary events within the family. Coccinellids exhibit a wide range of preferred food types spanning kingdoms, and trophic levels. To provide an evolutionary perspective on coccinellid feeding preferences, we performed a phylogenetic analysis of 62 taxa based on the ribosomal nuclear genes 18S and 28S. The entire dataset consists of 3957 aligned nucleotide sites, 787 of which are parsimony informative. Bayesian and parsimony analyses …

Community Development

The Montgomery County and Cities of Dayton and Kettering Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing (AI) is a review of barriers to fair housing in the public and private sector that restricts housing choices or the availability of housing choices based on a person’s membership in a protected class. Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act) prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings to the protected classes, which include: race, familial status, disability, sex, religion, or National origin.

The 1988 amendments to the Fair Housing Act also created an exemption to the …

Abundance And Distribution Of Two Species Of Squilla (Crustacea: Stomatopoda: Squillidae) In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Jennifer L. Wortham Jan 2009

Abundance And Distribution Of Two Species Of Squilla (Crustacea: Stomatopoda: Squillidae) In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Jennifer L. Wortham

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Stomatopods (mantis shrimps) are predatory benthic crustaceans. Mantis shrimp in the genus Squilla are frequent bycatch animals unintentionally collected in conjunction with the shrimp fishery in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Their carcasses are discarded instead of being retained for human consumption, fish meal, or other protein-based food products. The size, depth, salinity, and temperature distributions of these species, as well as their abundance based on gender, were examined to gain biological information that would be necessary if a fishery were to develop in the GOM. I collected samples (n = 2,854) of Squilla empusa and Squilla chydaea in the …

The Relationship Between Resilience And Body Image In College Women, Robert J. Mcgrath, Wiggin Julie, Rosemary M. Caron

Health Management & Policy

Possessing a negative body image is associated with unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders in college women and has been linked to depression and negative feelings of self worth. Limited research exists on protective factors that have the potential to mitigate body image dissatisfaction. This paper examines the relationship of resilience to body image dissatisfaction in college women. Female, undergraduate college students were studied using previously validated measures. Results indicate that increased resilience is associated with improved body image.

Sustainable Food Systems: Perspectives On Transportation Policy, Kameshwari Pothukuchi, Richard Wallace Jan 2009

Sustainable Food Systems: Perspectives On Transportation Policy, Kameshwari Pothukuchi, Richard Wallace

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Global agri-food and transportation systems have dramatically expanded food production and distribution worldwide. This integration, however, also adversely affects human health. The negative effects arise from unequal access to healthy food, unequal access to transportation for agri-food workers, increasing geospatial and economic concentration in the agri-food industry, and an emerging competition between food and fuel. Because the health of individuals is inextricably tied to the health of communities, regions, and ecological systems, health and transportation professionals need to act to both mitigate current disparities and enhance the future viability and sustainability of these systems. This paper offers numerous, specific recommendations …

“Utilization, Development And Conservation” Of Natural Resources For The Maximum Benefit Of Alaskans: Scrutinizing Alaska’S Permitting Regime For Large Mines, Susan Reeves, Michael Jungreis, Tina Sellers, Jim Wilkson

Alaska Law Review Online Articles Forum

This Article disputes analyses and conclusions presented in an article about Pebble Mine published in the Alaska Law Review’s June 2008 issue. This Article discusses the history of mining in Alaska and the Pebble Project and describes the permitting regime applicable to mining exploration or development projects as it has been developed by the Alaska Legislature and the United States Congress, implemented by state and federal administrative agencies, and interpreted by federal and state courts. The Authors argue that the mining industry in Alaska has not historically proved detrimental to the fishing industry and that numerous and adequate legal safeguards …

Good Agricultural And Handling Practices For Grapes And Other Fresh Produce, Pamela L. Brady, Justin R. Morris Jan 2009

Good Agricultural And Handling Practices For Grapes And Other Fresh Produce, Pamela L. Brady, Justin R. Morris

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

In recent years consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables has increased dramatically. This trend has increased the amount of produce being purchased at farmer’s markets, road-side stands, and neighborhood markets since consumers say they feel that the direct contact with growers at these markets makes them better able to assess the quality and safety of the produce. This buying trend has opened new markets to small- and medium-sized farms, which sell at these local outlets.

Choosing And Using A Co-Packer, Pamela L. Brady, Steve Seideman, Justin R. Morris Jan 2009

Choosing And Using A Co-Packer, Pamela L. Brady, Steve Seideman, Justin R. Morris

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Co-packing, also known as contract packaging, is when a company contracts with another company to manufacture and package foods that the original company will sell. Products on the market that have been co-packed range from nationally known brands to those sold under private labels. The use of co-packers has become extremely popular with entrepreneurs who have a product idea but lack the $100,000 or more needed to set up a manufacturing facility to produce the product. In addition, many entrepreneurs starting a foods business find that, in today’s market conditions, greater profits are achieved through sales and marketing innovations than …

Program Evaluation: The Effects Of A District-Led Leadership Preparation Program On Aspiring School Leaders, Tammra Bethune Reel Jan 2009

Program Evaluation: The Effects Of A District-Led Leadership Preparation Program On Aspiring School Leaders, Tammra Bethune Reel

Education Dissertations and Projects

The researcher of the dissertation evaluated a district-led school leadership preparation program using Stufflebeam's (2003) Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) model for program evaluation. The study had a management-oriented approach to program evaluation because it will enable effective decision making regarding the program's design. In addition, the program evaluation took a formative approach as program characteristics were analyzed and collaboration with program participants occurred in order to determine which aspects of the Administrative Mentoring Program (AMP) were most beneficial to those directly involved.

Data for the study were obtained through the processes of a researcher-created participant survey and personal …

Organic Writing Assessment: Dynamic Criteria Mapping In Action, Bob Broad, Linda Adler-Kassner, Barry Alford, Jane Detweiler

All USU Press Publications

Educators appropriately strive to create "assessment cultures" (Huot 2002) in which they integrate evaluation into teaching and learning and match assessment methods with best instructional practice. But how do teachers and administrators establish the values that underlie their evaluations? Bob Broad's 2003 volume, What We Really Value, introduced dynamic criteria mapping (DCM) as a method for eliciting locally-informed, context-sensitive criteria for writing assessments. The impact of DCM on writing assessment practice is just beginning to emerge as more and more writing departments and programs adopt, adapt, or experiment with DCM approaches. For the authors of Organic Writing Assessment, the DCM …

No Effect Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Activity In Three Inbred Strains Of Mice, Chris Downing, Christina Balderrama-Durbin, Jonathan Hayes, Thomas E. Johnson, David Gilliam Jan 2009

No Effect Of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure On Activity In Three Inbred Strains Of Mice, Chris Downing, Christina Balderrama-Durbin, Jonathan Hayes, Thomas E. Johnson, David Gilliam

SPS Faculty Publications

Aims: Prenatal exposure to alcohol can have adverse effects on the developing fetus. Two of the hallmarks of children exposed to alcohol prenatally are attention deficits and hyperactivity. While hyperactivity has been observed in rats following prenatal ethanol exposure, few studies have examined these effects in mice. The present study investigated the effects of prenatal ethanol exposure on activity in mice from three inbred strains: C57BL/6 (B6), Inbred Long Sleep (ILS) and Inbred Short Sleep (ISS).

Methods: On days 7 through 18 of gestation, mice were intragastrically intubated twice daily with either 3.0 g/kg Ethanol (E) or an isocaloric amount …
