Living In Rural New England Amplifies The Risk Of Depression In Patients With Hiv, Siddharth H. Sheth, Paul T. Jensen, Timothy Lahey

Dartmouth Scholarship

The importance of depression as a complication of HIV infection is increasingly understood, and people living in rural areas are at increased risk for depression. However, it is not known whether living in rural areas amplifies the risk of depression in patients with HIV. We compared the prevalence of depression between rural and metropolitan HIV patients seen at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock HIV Program in a retrospective cohort study. Using the validated Rural-Urban Commuting Area Score, we categorized patients as living in small town/rural areas, micropolitan or metropolitan towns. Then, using a multivariate logistic regression model to adjust for demographic factors that …

Food Science and Nutrition

Background/Objective:To investigate socioeconomic, gestational and early life exposures as potential determinants of total height, leg and trunk length.

Subjects/Methods:Male subjects from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study were examined in 1986 at home, and in 2000 when registering at the local army base. The follow-up rate was 79%. Standing and sitting heights were measured on both occasions. Leg length was calculated as the difference between standing and sitting heights. Outcome measures were height, leg and trunk length at 4 and 18 years and growth in this period. Complete data were obtained for 2012 participants, representing 71% of all …

Acetaminophen Prevents Aging-Associated Hyperglycemia In Aged Rats: Effect Of Aging-Associated Hyperactivation Of P38-Mapk And Erk1/2, Miaozong Wu, Devashish H. Desai, Sunil K. Kakarla, Anjaiah Katta, Satyanarayana Paturi, Anil K. Gutta, Kevin M. Rice, Ernest M. Walker Jr., Eric R. Blough

MIIR Faculty Research

Background

Aging-related hyperglycemia is associated with increased oxidative stress and diminished muscle glucose transporter-4 (Glut4) that may be regulated, at least in part, by the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK).

Methods

To test the possibility that aging-related hyperglycemia can be prevented by pharmacological manipulation of MAPK hyperactivation, aged (27-month old) Fischer 344/NNiaHSD × Brown Norway/BiNia F1 (F344BN) rats were administered acetaminophen (30 mg/kg body weight/day) for 6 months in drinking water.

Results

Hepatic histopathology, serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase analyses suggested that chronic acetaminophen did not cause hepatotoxicity. Compared with adult (6-month) and aged (27-month) rats, very aged rats (33-month) …

How Is The Primary Care Safety Net Faring In Massachusetts? Community Health Centers In The Midst Of Health Reform, Leighton C. Ku, Emily Jones, Brad Finnegan, Peter Shin, Sara J. Rosenbaum Mar 2009

How Is The Primary Care Safety Net Faring In Massachusetts? Community Health Centers In The Midst Of Health Reform, Leighton C. Ku, Emily Jones, Brad Finnegan, Peter Shin, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Massachusetts' landmark 2006 health reform legislation sets an important precedent for national reform. Initial evaluations have demonstrated the law's success in dramatically expanding health insurance coverage and health care access, but less is known about its effects on community health centers, which serve one of every 13 residents and one in four low-income residents. This analysis evaluates the experiences of health centers with the Massachusetts reforms, using administrative data to examine finances and patient enrollment in addition to the qualitative results of in-depth interviews conducted during site visits in August 2008 and the results of a short survey of health …

Journal Articles: College of Nursing

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity increase rural midlife and older women's risk of chronic diseases and premature death, and they are behind urban residents in meeting Healthy People 2010 objectives.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare a tailored intervention based on the Health Promotion Model with a generic intervention to increase physical activity and healthy eating among rural women.

METHODS: In a randomized-by-site, community-based, controlled, clinical trial, Wellness for Women, 225 women aged 50 to 69 years were recruited in two similar rural areas. Over 12 months, women received by mail either 18 generic …

Effect Of Processing Parameters On Texture, Composition And Applicability Of High Protein Dairy Food, Maulik Shah Mar 2009

Effect Of Processing Parameters On Texture, Composition And Applicability Of High Protein Dairy Food, Maulik Shah

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of key process parameters on the flow properties of a novel High Protein Dairy Food (HPDF). HPDF was manufactured by an approach similar to that of manufacture of Halloumi cheese (a semi hard cheese originally from Cyprus). The effect of pasteurization condition, pH of acidification and homogenization were investigated on flowability, composition and texture of the HPDF. The study consisted of three different stages. After each stage of experimentation, the HPDF was analyzed for compositional, textural (by texture profile analysis) and flow properties during heating by microwave, oven and hot …

You Are What You Eat: Healthy Practice For Young Children, Vikki K. Collins, Sallie A. Miller, H Marguerite Yates

Perspectives In Learning

All young children can benefit from proper nutrition and physical activity. Because children spend so much time in schools, teachers can play important roles in educating children about nutrition, dietary behavior, and physical activity to foster their optimal growth and health. Eating healthy, nourishing food fosters physical growth, enhances emotional stability, and improves school performance. By planning and implementing developmentally appropriate integrated lessons, teachers can help promote healthy practice for young children.
