Identifying Proteins That Interact With The Novel Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Proteins Pdr19 And Pdr20 And Bioinformatic Characterization Of Genes Involved In Ttg Cellular Responses, Casey White
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
One of the most critical structures in cellular biology is the plasma membrane, due to its ability to respond to environmental stresses. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a model, single-celled eukaryote that has been used to investigate many aspects of cell biology. A recent genetic screen in yeast for plasma membrane homeostatic proteins identified three related proteins of unknown molecular function that participate in these processes. These proteins, termed PDR19, PDR20, and PDR21 for Pleiotropic Drug Resistance, are each approximately one hundred amino acids in size and share a small conserved domain, namely the core sequence KITRYDL. In the case of PDR21 …
Solidarity: Unfashionable, But Still American, William M. Sage
Solidarity: Unfashionable, But Still American, William M. Sage
Faculty Scholarship
Illness, we are often told, is a private matter. Accordingly, none must interfere in the medical decisions that emerge from the confidential relationship be- tween physician and patient. Yet evidence of interdependence is ubiquitous in health care. One person’s malady can harm families, workplaces, clubs, churches, and sometimes entire communities. Similarly, a suffering pa- tient must rely on many individuals, associational groups, corporate entities, and government agencies for support and assistance. It is, therefore, unsurprising that various social units claim an interest and a voice in maintaining health and treating disease.
However, explicit solidarity has long been out of vogue …
Effect Of Molecular Weight Reduction By Gamma Irradiation On The Antimicrobial Activity Of Chitosan, Ebuel Sirmats
Effect Of Molecular Weight Reduction By Gamma Irradiation On The Antimicrobial Activity Of Chitosan, Ebuel Sirmats

Managing Linepithema Humile (Mayr), The Argentine Ant, In South Carolina State Park Campgrounds, Brittany Ellis
All Theses
Linepithema humile (Mayr), the Argentine ant, is known as a pest in many urban areas of the southeastern United States. In the Piedmont region of South Carolina, there is a documented problem with L. humile invading the campsites of state park campgrounds. While some parks have tried to implement proactive control programs, the most widely used tactic is spraying insecticides when L. humile populations become intolerable to visitors. Although park personnel are treating problem areas with liquid insecticide, park visitors also treat their campsites with insecticidal products, as well as products not labeled for ant control.
Surveys in 2008 showed …

Mesiodistal Crown Size In Relation To The Risk And Severity Of Malocclusion, Jon Robert Zang-Bodis
Mesiodistal Crown Size In Relation To The Risk And Severity Of Malocclusion, Jon Robert Zang-Bodis
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
From among numerous potential causes of dental malocclusion, tooth size has been implicated as one factor. Prior studies show that mesiodistally larger teeth increase the risk of malocclusion. The present report extends our understanding by testing for graded responses between crown size and the extent of dental malocclusion. Maximum mesiodistal crown dimensions of all 14 permanent tooth types (excluding third molars) were measured in 207 American white adolescents (routine orthodontic patients), and 10 measures of malocclusion (e.g., rotations, displacements, spacing) were recorded. Analysis of covariance (controlling for sexual dimorphism in tooth size) disclosed (1) significant positive associations between …
Preeclampsia And Future Cardiovascular Risk, Christine Lauzon
Preeclampsia And Future Cardiovascular Risk, Christine Lauzon
Theses and Dissertations
Several recent studies have shown that women with a history of preeclampsia or gestational hypertension are at increased risk of developing hypertension and cardiovascular disease later in life. It is unclear whether this increased risk is due to underlying conditions in the women that predispose them to preeclampsia, or to the long-term sequelae of the preeclampsia syndrome. It is clear though that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women. There is a lack of anticipatory guidance for women regarding their future risk of cardiovascular disease following pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia. Therefore, the purpose of this project was …
Spirituality In The Community, Dawn Fredrich
Spirituality In The Community, Dawn Fredrich
Theses and Dissertations
Important nursing theorists throughout history agree that human beings are comprised of several dimensions. These dimensions generally include body, mind and spirit. Many also agree that these dimensions cannot be isolated for treatment. The body, mind and spirit are so intricately interconnected that each of the dimensions has an effect on the other. Although nurses are charged with assessing, intervening, and evaluating care for each of these three dimensions, most nurses practicing in acute and long term facilities provide interventions directed primarily at the body and mind. There is, however, a resurgence of interest in how spirituality affects the health …

Ant-Plant Coevolution: A Systematic Evaluation Of The Myrmelachista Haberi (Formicinae) And Ocotea Sp. (Lauraceae) Symbiosis, May 2009, Murtaza Paghdiwala
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
I have evaluated the relationship between Myrmelachista haberi and Ocotea sp. (Los Llanos) to provide definitive evidence supporting the nature of the symbiosis and possible explanations in terms of co-evolutionary history. This interaction has been described in terms of benefit to the ant-domatia and nutrition via phloem-feeder farming – but benefits from the plants perspective have gone largely unstudied. McNett (2009) attempted to quantify the nature of the relationship by monitoring the uptake and movement of stable isotopes through each of the three participating species. This study found that nutrients do not transfer between the organisms, but left the possibilities …

Staphylococcus aureus is a frequent cause of a myriad of infections in hospitals, healthcare facilities and community settings. It is often related to skin and soft tissue infection, but it can also cause other diseases varying from food poisoning to endocarditis and toxic shock syndrome. According to a study by Kuehnert et al. (2006) there has been a strong association between Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) carriage and risk factors for subsequent infections. Subsequent infection from S. aureus , including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infection, can be projected by looking at the presence of S. aureus nasal colonization. The purpose of …
The Role Of Larval Fat Cells In Starvation Resistance And Reproduction In Adult Drosophila Melanogaster, Jerell Roland Aguila
The Role Of Larval Fat Cells In Starvation Resistance And Reproduction In Adult Drosophila Melanogaster, Jerell Roland Aguila
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The intricate life cycle of holometabolous insects includes well-defined larval and adult stages associated with feeding and non-feeding periods. The larval stage is distinguished by prevalent feeding and is necessary for supporting the animal as it quickly grows. The larval stage also serves as the period for the animal to obtain adequate energy stores, primarily in the larval fat body, to fuel the animal through the non-feeding pupal and immature adult stages. Acquiring sufficient energy stores is paramount for the success of the adult animal. In fact, certain insects, such as silkworms and mayflies, do not feed as adults and …
