An Agenda For Teaching International Economic An Agenda For Teaching International Economic Law In Indian Law Schools, Seema Sapra
Indian Journal of International Economic Law
At this time of India’s ongoing ‘Great Transformation,’ legal educators and researchers in India need to pay greater attention to international economic law (IEL). New agendas for IEL teaching in India must derive from and support domestic ‘reform’ objectives. An important conceptual links between broad issues of reform in India and IEL teaching in the classroom relates to what reform means or should mean. It is suggested that IEL teaching in India more actively engage with domestic issues arising on account of the liberalisation of India’s external trade as well as the liberalisation of its domestic economy, and also bigger …

The use of hormonal contraception is commonly associated with weight gain. The purpose of this retrospective study was to explore the association between the use of hormonal contraception and weight change in an outpatient adolescent patient population in Lexington, Kentucky. Data were gathered from the charts of 259 adolescent female patients seen in an outpatient adolescent clinic for up to 72 months. At the initial visit, all patients were evaluated for risk-taking behavior and received preventive counseling. Patients were categorized as either contraception users or non-users (control group). Contraception users were subdivided into Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA) user group or …

Low inorganic phosphate (Pi) availability triggers an array of spatiotemporal adaptive responses in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). There are several reports on the effects of Pi deprivation on the root system that have been attributed to different growth conditions and/or inherent genetic variability. Here we show that the gelling agents, largely treated as inert components, significantly affect morphophysiological and molecular responses of the seedlings to deficiencies of Pi and other nutrients. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy analysis revealed variable levels of elemental contaminants not only in different types of agar but also in different batches of the same agar. Fluctuating levels of …

Reforming Education In Pakistan – Tracing Global Links, Sajid Ali, Malik S. A. Tahir
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
This paper is about tracing global links in national education reforms in Pakistan. The paper tries to describe globalization and its general effects on national policies. It particularly highlights the effects of globalization on education reforms, which are: competitiveness-driven, finance-driven and equity-driven. In light of these global education reform patterns the paper explores the major educational reforms being pursued in Pakistan since 1990s. The paper argues that globalization has seriously challenged the national reform policies, which are now becoming more and more globally driven. Rather than out rightly rejecting all global policies, engaging critically with them is the stance of …

Estimations Of Population Density For Selected Periods Between The Neolithic And Ad 1800, Andreas Zimmermann, Johanna Hilpert, Karl Peter Wendt
Human Biology
We describe a combination of methods applied to obtain reliable estimations of population density using archaeological data. The combination is based on a hierarchical model of scale levels. The necessary data and methods used to obtain the results are chosen so as to define transfer functions from one scale level to another. We apply our method to data sets from western Germany that cover early Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman, and Merovingian times as well as historical data from AD 1800. Error margins and natural and historical variability are discussed. Our results for nonstate societies are always lower than conventional estimations …

Working For The "Working River": Willamette River Water Pollution, 1926 To 1962, James Vincent Hillegas
Dissertations and Theses
Efforts to abate Willamette River pollution between 1926 and 1962 centered on a struggle between abatement advocates and the two primary polluters in the watershed, the City of Portland and the pulp and paper industry. Throughout the twentieth century, the Willamette was by far the most heavily populated and industrialized watershed in Oregon. Like many other of the world's rivers, the Willamette was an integral part of municipal and industrial waste removal systems. As such, the main stem of the river carried the combined wastes from sewage outfalls serving hundreds of thousands of people and millions of gallons daily of …

Over-fatness and poor cardiovascular (CV) fitness are well-documented risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults, but less is known about their association with disease risk in adolescents. This study aimed to determine the relationship between anthropometrics, fitness, and CVD risk.
Six anthropometric indicators of body fatness, seven measures of fitness, and seven metabolic and hemodynamic CVD risk factors were measured in a convenience sample of 28 female high school students (15-18 years of age). A tally was made of the number of factors for which each subject was outside the normal reference range (CVD risk).
Correlation analyses were completed …

Thriving In Today’S Times: College Bound And Stressed Out?, Ann Michelle Daniels
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
John is a typical college student. Most college students enjoy college life. They like to learn, be with friends, and have the sense of freedom that college life awards them. However, starting college for the first time or even return-ing to college can cause some stress. Stressors may include guilt for leaving home and a certain amount of homesickness. In John’s case, his guilt is wrenching because he real¬izes that his parents are under a great amount of stress due to forces beyond their control. He also realizes that he can’t help his family if he is away from home. …

Respect For Grizzly Bears: An Aboriginal Approach For Co-Existence And Resilience, Douglas A. Clarke, D. Scott Slocombe
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Aboriginal peoples’ respect for grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) is widely acknowledged, but rarely explored, in wildlife management discourse in northern Canada. Practices of respect expressed toward bears were observed and grouped into four categories: terminology, stories, reciprocity, and ritual. In the southwest Yukon, practices in all four categories form a coherent qualitative resource management system that may enhance the resilience of the bear-human system as a whole. This system also demonstrates the possibility of a previously unrecognized human role in maintaining productive riparian ecosystems and salmon runs, potentially providing a range of valued social-ecological outcomes. Practices of respect …

Effect Of Glycocalyx On Red Blood Cell Motion In Capillary Surrounded By Tissue, Rekha Bali, Swati Mishra, P. N. Tandon
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The aim of the paper is to develop a simple model for capillary tissue fluid exchange system to study the effect of glycocalyx layer on the single file flow of red cells. We have considered the channel version of an idealized Krogh capillary-tissue exchange system. The glycocalyx and the tissue are represented as porous layers with different property parametric values. Hydrodynamic Lubrication theory is used to compute the squeezing flow of plasma within the small gap between the cell and the glycocalyx layer symmetrically surrounded by the tissue. The system of non linear partial differential equations has been solved using …

Predicting Intention To Wean From The Bottle Among Hispanic Mothers, Elaine K. Fleming
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background. Hispanic children carry a disproportionate burden of prolonged bottle use and associated disease. Children in low-income households who use the bottle beyond age 12 months are at risk for iron deficiency anemia, obesity, and early childhood dental caries.
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of intention to wean from the bottle among low-income Hispanic mothers of infants enrolled in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
Method. A convenience sample of 266 low-income Hispanic mothers of infants age 5 to 14 months old were categorized into four groups by experience …
Quality Of Life And Depression: Outcome Markers For A Weight Management Program, Cecilia Dueñas
Quality Of Life And Depression: Outcome Markers For A Weight Management Program, Cecilia Dueñas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Pediatric obesity has become a national epidemic and current trends suggest a continued increase. Obese children have been found to have higher incidences of depression and a lower quality of life (QOL) than children from other often more severe medical populations. As a result, weight management programs are on the increase with the majority measuring outcome success through weight loss and decreased body mass index (BMI). It is evident however, that health factors are not the only factors associated with obesity, and that psychosocial components are important as well. The Loma Linda University Growing Fit Program is unique in that …
