Objectives: Assess current imaging practices; determine utility of accessory radiographic studies, including dynamic and oblique radiographs; calculate effective radiation doses of routine spine radiographs. Summary of Background Data: Plain radiography is generally considered the initial imaging modality for evaluation of degenerative spine complaints. In addition to anteroposterior (AP) and lateral views, dynamic and oblique views may also be obtained. There is currently no data on imaging practices of spine specialists, the utility of these accessory radiographic views, or the radiation exposure patients receive as a result of various spine …

Monitoring, Identification, And Intervention For Metabolic Disorders In Veterans With Psychotic Disorders, Michael Swtye Jul 2009

Monitoring, Identification, And Intervention For Metabolic Disorders In Veterans With Psychotic Disorders, Michael Swtye

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

In light of growing evidence that certain antipsychotics may cause potentially life-threatening metabolic side-effects, the purpose of this study was to determine how regularly mental health clinicians (MHCs) currently monitor and manage metabolic abnormalities in overweight and obese patients with psychotic disorders. We hypothesized that MHCs monitor, identify and intervene for metabolic abnormalities in their patients at significantly lower rates than primary care physicians (PCCs), and that such rates may jeopardize patient health. We performed a one-year cross-sectional medical record review of primary care and mental health routine outpatient visit notes from the West Haven Campus of the Veteran Affairs …

Use Of Media To Improve Human Papilloma Virus (Hpv)Vaccine Acceptability, Pavithra Venkat

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Our objective was to determine if using a video educational tool can influence (1) individual vaccine acceptability (2) parental acceptability, (3) parental views on vaccine mandates, and (4) age of vaccination accepted for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine. We conducted a cross-sectional study using bilingual surveys distributed at Brigham and Womens and Massachusetts General Hospital clinics and at the Coalition of Boston Public Health Association from January to March 2007. An initial 32-question survey addressing HPV knowledge, beliefs and vaccine acceptability was completed, followed by an eight-minute video about HPV and the vaccine. An additional 11-question post assessment was …

Six Fifth Grade Students Experiences Participating In Active Gaming During Physical Eduction Classes, Lisa Witherspoon Hansen Jul 2009

Six Fifth Grade Students Experiences Participating In Active Gaming During Physical Eduction Classes, Lisa Witherspoon Hansen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As technology and sedentary lifestyles have become an integral part of children's lives, so too has the prevalence of childhood obesity. Although video games are often associated with influencing sedentary behaviors, active gaming is a new genre that requires children to become physically active while playing the games. In this inquiry I explored six fifth grade students' experiences participating in active gaming in physical education classes for 30 minutes, twice weekly, during an eight week (16 sessions) study. I used qualitative methods including interviews, journal entries, and observational field notes. Analysis of data revealed students have a "Persistence to Game" …

A Comparison Of Dental Practitioners' Knowledge Of The Adverse Oral Effects Of Pharmaceuticals; Specifically, Low-Dose Methotrexate, Diltiazem, Cyclosporine, Istretinoin, And Lisinopril, Melissa Van Witzenburg Jul 2009

A Comparison Of Dental Practitioners' Knowledge Of The Adverse Oral Effects Of Pharmaceuticals; Specifically, Low-Dose Methotrexate, Diltiazem, Cyclosporine, Istretinoin, And Lisinopril, Melissa Van Witzenburg

Dental Hygiene ETDs

There are more than 15, 000 approved prescription and over-the-counter drugs, diagnostics, and intravenous supplementation products in the United States. Due to the increased number of patients using medications it is important that dental providers are aware of common adverse oral complications. The most commonly seen adverse oral effects of medications are xerostomia, gingival hypertrophy, angular cheilitis, and mucositis. The purpose of this study was to examine dental providers, subjects' knowledge of adverse oral effects of low-dose methotrexate, diltiazem, cyclosporine, isotretinoin, and lisinopril. Four of the five hypotheses tested demonstrated high P-values, therefore; they were consistent with the null hypothesis. …

Computational Modeling Of The Helical Axis In The Human Knee--Detecting Changes In The Transverse Plane, Emily Carney Jul 2009

Computational Modeling Of The Helical Axis In The Human Knee--Detecting Changes In The Transverse Plane, Emily Carney

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to build a helical axis algorithm capable of detecting changes in the helical axis intersection of the tibia and femur in human knees. This algorithm was designed and tested using three models: a multiplanar rigid body model, a mathematical model, and a cylinder model. The multiplanar rigid body model closely mimics knee movement without supporting ligamentous structures, thus the movement was unconstrained. In this model kinematic position data were collected using both MotionMonitor™ (MotionMonitor™ Version 7.7, Innovative Sports Training, Chicago, IL) and Vicon Nexus 1.3 software system (Oxford Metrics Group, Oxford, UK). To test …

Building A Brighter Future Through Education: Student Housing For Single Parent Families, Carrie Cogsdale Jul 2009

Building A Brighter Future Through Education: Student Housing For Single Parent Families, Carrie Cogsdale

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

On the possibilities of a child the Center for Disease Control says, “Every Child

should have the opportunity to reach their full potential”. (CDC) Children who grow up

in low-income families are at risk of falling behind in education before they even enter

kindergarten. Single parents that struggle to provide food and shelter often lack the time

and the resources to provide the early education that their children need. A college

education could provide these parents and their children with a better quality of life.

University student housing could include built in childcare services, educational

assistance and peer support, for …

Youth Views Of Experiences And Benefits Of Public Speaking, Ben Silliman Jul 2009

Youth Views Of Experiences And Benefits Of Public Speaking, Ben Silliman

Journal of Youth Development

Ninety-eight youth participants, ages 9-17, involved in a public speaking event reported that preparation and presentation of a 5-12 minute demonstration or illustrated talk improved confidence, knowledge of a selected topic and skills in communicating, goal setting, organizing, working with others, and doing research. Positive benefits were reported from first-year as well as multi-year participants. Most youth surveyed indicated that they participated by choice and received adequate assistance in preparation for speaking. Similar results were found for a smaller group (N=20) involved in a non-competitive performing arts event. A randomly-selected group (N=37) interviewed about the extended effects of public speaking …

Assessing Service-Learning In A College-Level Adolescent Development Course, Cheryl L. Lee

Journal of Youth Development

Service-learning is an instructional method in which students learn course content by actively participating in thoughtfully organized service experiences related to the content. Effectively linking service-learning to course content not only offers students a powerful opportunity to maximize academic learning, but also promotes their personal growth and instills a commitment to lifelong, civic engagement. Service-learning was integrated into an upper level Family and Consumer Sciences Adolescent Development course. In addition to completing the traditional course work, students also completed a service-learning experience at a community agency that served adolescents. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the service-learning component, students …

Determination Of Protein Content Of Some Different Types Of Species Of Mushroom In Owo Local Government Area Of Ondo State, Nigeria, R. A. Jose, J. Kayode

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The wild edible mushrooms are one of the most important non-timber forest products. Due to its vigorous growth in the rainy season, delicious taste and nutritional value, the protein content of three species of mushrooms, namely Termitomyces robustus, Lentinus squarrosulus Mont and Lentimula edodes, was determined. The highest amount of protein was found in Lentinus squarrosulus Mont (37.80mg/ml), followed by Termitomyces robustus (33.00mg/ml) and least found in Lentimula edodes (17.00mg/ml).

Objective And Subjective Residential Context And Urban Children’S Weight Status And Physical And Sedentary Activities, Rachel Tolbert Kimbro, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, Sara Mclanahan

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper fills this gap by addressing two research questions: first, we ask, are the activity patterns (outdoor play and television watching) of five-year-old children living in large cities associated with children’s weight status? Second, we ask, is residential context, and neighborhood safety in particular, associated with children’s activity patterns? Consistent with past research, we find that outdoor play is negatively associated with weight status, while television watching is positively associated with weight status. We also find, unexpectedly, that the poorest children are playing outdoors the most and watching the most television. Finally, we find that three measures of residential …

Human Security In Colombia, Carolina Forero, Sally Fishback

Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies

The Human Security Index for Colombia (HSIC) is a quantitative analysis of the most pressing concerns facing the nation. An introduction and demographic depiction outlining relevant historical events is included to better explain how Colombia has progressed into its current state. Research compiled by the government and other official sources is used to explore both the social welfare and physical safety of all Colombians. Issues surrounding the domestic conflict as well as nonviolent concerns are dually mentioned, and data is broken down by department to depict the regions of concern. Two sub-indices were constructed and intentionally separated, as they are …

Number Of Aberrant Crypt Foci Associated With Adiposity And Igf1 Bioavailability, Helen Swede, Joseph C. Anderson, Richard G. Stevens, Joel Levine, Bruce M. Brenner, Carl D. Malchoff, Valerie B. Duffy, Devon C. Pleau, Daniel W. Rosenberg

Articles - Patient Care

Background Dysregulation of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system, a common consequence of adiposity-induced insulin resistance, may be a key underlying mechanism linking excess body weight with colon cancer. Evidence has been derived from studies of cancer and polyps. Supporting data about aberrant crypt foci (ACF), putative pre-polyp changes, have been generated only from animal studies to date. Methods We randomly selected 26 patients with sex-specific elevated waist-hip-ratio (WHR) and 26 with normal values from a series of 150 patients seeking routine colonoscopy at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Cross-sectional analyses were performed of ACF number (<5, ≥5) in relation to total IGF1, IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP3), insulin, body mass index (BMI), WHR and waist circumference (WC). Visualized ACF in the 20 cm of the distal colon were counted using advanced endoscopic imaging. Results Patients …
