Innovation And Multimedia In The Poetry Of Cummings And Mayakovsky, Svetlana Nikitina Dec 2009

Innovation And Multimedia In The Poetry Of Cummings And Mayakovsky, Svetlana Nikitina

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Innovation and Multimedia in the Poetry of cummings and Mayakovsky" Svetlana Nikitina discusses how e.e. cummings and Vladimir Mayakovsky foreshadowed the digital revolution of today in their multimedia experiments in poetry. Although they spoke different languages and lived in different societies, the two modernist poets display similarities in their modernist aesthetics. Both are artists as well as poets who blur the line between the two forms of art. Their synesthesia inoculates them against postmodern disintegration of meaning or form. Although cummings is a staunch individualist, and Mayakovsky the tribune of the collective, they both rebel against traditional …

On-Farm Mortality Composting In Washington State: Outreach And Producer Survey, Caitlin Price, Lynne Carpernter-Boggs, Jessica Goldberger Dec 2009

On-Farm Mortality Composting In Washington State: Outreach And Producer Survey, Caitlin Price, Lynne Carpernter-Boggs, Jessica Goldberger

Journal of Extension

The WSU On-Farm Mortality Composting Project of the Biologically Intensive and Organic Agriculture (BIOAg) Program demonstrated on-farm mortality composting as an effective disposal option for routine livestock mortalities. To evaluate the impacts of the project and determine the direction of future research and outreach, Washington dairy producers currently composting farm mortalities were surveyed. Their most important sources of initial information about mortality composting were other farmers and neighbors, magazines and newspapers, and local conservation districts. Future information was preferred from a Web site and university Extension bulletin, not classes or seminars. Composting reduced mortality disposal costs for 92% of these …

Metaevaluation Of Hiv/Aids Prevention Intervention Evaluations In Sub Saharan Africa With A Specific Emphasis On Implications For Women And Girls, Tererai Mafukidze Trent Dec 2009

Metaevaluation Of Hiv/Aids Prevention Intervention Evaluations In Sub Saharan Africa With A Specific Emphasis On Implications For Women And Girls, Tererai Mafukidze Trent

Dissertations

Despite numerous attempts by international agencies to halt the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), nowhere has the impact of HIV/AIDS been felt more acutely than among women and girls in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). SSA women account for 59% of adults over the age of 15 living with HIV/AIDS and 76% of those 15-24 who are infected (United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS [UNAIDS], 2007).

The evidence on gender disparities in infection rates is indisputable; there is an urgent need to identify what is missing in HIV/AIDS prevention interventions: What is the evidence based upon …

Post-Katrina New Orleans: The Challenges, Milestones And Progress Of Small Business Owners And Entrepreneurs, Iona Lee Dec 2009

Post-Katrina New Orleans: The Challenges, Milestones And Progress Of Small Business Owners And Entrepreneurs, Iona Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The US Small Business Association reports that 99.9% of all US business can be classified as small. Having less than 500 employees small businesses provide work for just over half of all US private sector workers (2009). Additionally, less than 2% of those businesses have between 100-499 employees (Headd & Kirchhoff, 2009), leaving approximately 97% of all US businesses employing 99 or fewer employees. Given this statistic, it would stand to reason that small businesses have a higher success rate than large ones; however, developing and opening a small business does not occur without risk. The SBA reports that only …

Electrical Switching Properties Of Ternary And Layered Chalcogenide Phase-Change Memory Devices, Martin Jared Barclay Dec 2009

Electrical Switching Properties Of Ternary And Layered Chalcogenide Phase-Change Memory Devices, Martin Jared Barclay

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Due to the increasing demand for products which use Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) and the near realization of the scaling limits of Flash [1, 2], a large research effort is underway. This effort is to develop new forms of NVM capable of replacing Flash [3]. At the forefront of this research is Phase-Change Random Access Memory (PCRAM). Chalcogenide based PCRAM is one of the most promising non-volatile memories for the next generation of portable electronics, due to its excellent scalability, large sensing margin, fast switching speed, and possible multi-bit per cell operation [3]. It is desirable for a phase-change random access …

Constructing Marriage: A Thematic Analysis Of Self-Help Books On Marriage, Stephanie Mae Jones Dec 2009

Constructing Marriage: A Thematic Analysis Of Self-Help Books On Marriage, Stephanie Mae Jones

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Questions about what makes a marriage work are treated widely in the popular press. This study seeks to discover how we learn about marriage through self-help books. According to Cameron (2007), these texts can become a part of our construction of everyday life. Therefore this study focuses on how marital self-help books frame the institution, and whether relational dialectics were present in each book. Two books— Laura Schlessinger’s The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage and John Gottman’s Seven Principles of Making Marriage Work—were selected through an exhaustive process. A thematic analysis was conducted on each text, and topics …

The Root Causes Of Errant Ordered Radiology Exams, Benjamin Duman Dec 2009

The Root Causes Of Errant Ordered Radiology Exams, Benjamin Duman

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine why there was a high number of errant radiology orders from requesting physicians at ATA Hospital. As the researcher, I wanted to clearly define errant orders, determine the root causes of errant orders, and further, make recommendations that would help diminish current as well as future order errors. This study answers three research questions: RQ1. Exactly what are the performance problems associated with errant orders within ATA Hospital’s radiology department that warrant further research? RQ2. What causes the increase in errant radiological orders at ATA Hospital? And, RQ3. What types of performance …

Understanding How Evaluators Deal With Multiple Stakeholders, Michelle Elyce Baron Dec 2009

Understanding How Evaluators Deal With Multiple Stakeholders, Michelle Elyce Baron

Theses and Dissertations

Although many leaders in evaluation advise evaluators to balance the needs of the client and other stakeholders, very little is known about how or if practicing evaluators address this injunction. Understanding how practicing evaluators address the needs of multiple stakeholders could inform evaluator training. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe what practicing evaluators do when faced with conflicting stakeholder values. This study invited five evaluators to share their experiences working with multiple stakeholders while reflecting on how they deal with multiple and often conflicting values as they seek to serve the stakeholders. One implication from this study …

Preparing Medical Students To Counsel For Smoking Cessation, Aubree M. Guiffre Dec 2009

Preparing Medical Students To Counsel For Smoking Cessation, Aubree M. Guiffre

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Smoking is a national epidemic. Medical providers are the first line of defense to help patients reduce or stop smoking. However, smoking cessation counseling does not occur consistently or regularly. Medical providers must be trained to counsel for smoking cessation, with certain areas requiring attention in order for the training to be successful. There is a relationship between medical students who have high rates of self-efficacy related to smoking cessation counseling and high rates of actual counseling. Understanding the relationships between knowledge, skills, attitudes, and the medical school year in training on self-efficacy is important to better prepare medical students …

Lenna Lowe Yost, Temperance, And The Ratification Of The Woman Suffrage Amendment By West Virginia, Karina G. Thurston

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis is a biography of West Virginia native Lenna Lowe Yost and her role in two important reform causes---temperance and woman suffrage. It explores Yost's life and political accomplishments in both regional and national venues, progressing from her childhood, through her early activism, and culminating with the passage of the national woman suffrage amendment. During the Progressive Era, as Yost reached the apex of her career as an indispensable state leader, she had to navigate between divisions in the suffrage movement as well as local conflicts between prohibitionists and suffragists. In these movements Lenna Yost proved herself to be …

Eight buckets of wet coal samples were collected from Shade Coal Preparation Plant, including the feed, clean coal, refuse, and middlings for fine spiral and coarse spiral, respectively. Float-sink analysis was performed on these size intervals using LMT (Lithium Metatungstate) liquids. Size distribution analysis is conducted for each size fraction of the above eight samples to evaluation the effectiveness of spiral separation. Wet sieving method was used for size distribution analysis.;From the tests, the following conclusion can be drawn: (1) The fine spiral is able to recovery 65.5% of the deslime hydrocyclone underflow as clean coal with an ash content …

Cybersieves, Derek E. Bambauer Dec 2009

Cybersieves, Derek E. Bambauer

Duke Law Journal

This Article offers a process-based method to assess Internet censorship that is compatible with different value sets about what content should be blocked. Whereas China's Internet censorship receives considerable attention, censorship in the United States and other democratic countries is largely ignored. The Internet is increasingly fragmented by nations' different value judgments about what content is unacceptable. Countries differ not in their intent to censor material-from political dissent in Iran to copyrighted songs in America-but in the content they target, how precisely they block it, and how involved their citizens are in these choices. Previous scholars have analyzed Internet censorship …
