Paraconsistent Reasoning For Owl 2, Yue Ma, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2009

Paraconsistent Reasoning For Owl 2, Yue Ma, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

A four-valued description logic has been proposed to reason with description logic based inconsistent knowledge bases. This approach has a distinct advantage that it can be implemented by invoking classical reasoners to keep the same complexity as under the classical semantics. However, this approach has so far only been studied for the basid description logic ALC. In this paper, we further study how to extend the four-valued semantics to the more expressive description logic SROIQ which underlies the forthcoming revision of the Web Ontology Language, OWL 2, and also investigate how it fares when adapated to tractable description logics including …

An Empirical Examination Of The Effects Of Ethics, Disclosure, And Signal Theory On Disciplinary Actions Within The Accounting Profession, Benjamin Mcmillan Oct 2009

An Empirical Examination Of The Effects Of Ethics, Disclosure, And Signal Theory On Disciplinary Actions Within The Accounting Profession, Benjamin Mcmillan

Doctoral Dissertations

There has been extensive research examining the relationship between the public mission of the accounting profession and the private interests of its professionals. All professions have been offered a special place within society due to the importance of the functions they perform as well as their stated public missions. In exchange, society delegates specific rights to the professions such as exclusivity of practice, self-discipline, and self-selection of their membership. Existing research suggests that the accounting profession's private interests have potentially encroached upon its public mission.

By using the Economic Theory of the Self Regulated Profession, Disclosure Theory, and Signal Theory, …

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Background: Selenium, a micronutrient whose deficiency in diet causes immune dysfunction and inflammatory disorders, is thought to exert its physiological effects mostly in the form of selenium-containing proteins (selenoproteins). Incorporation of selenium into the amino acid selenocysteine (Sec), and subsequently into selenoproteins is mediated by Sec tRNA[Ser]Sec.
Results: To define macrophage-specific selenoprotein functions, we generated mice with the Sec tRNA[Ser]Sec gene specifically deleted in myeloid cells. These mutant mice were devoid of the "selenoproteome" in macrophages, yet exhibited largely normal inflammatory responses. However, selenoprotein deficiency led to aberrant expression of extracellular matrix-related genes, and diminished migration of …

Radiation Detectors And Sources Enhanced With Micro/Nanotechnology, Chad Michael Whitney Oct 2009

Radiation Detectors And Sources Enhanced With Micro/Nanotechnology, Chad Michael Whitney

Doctoral Dissertations

The ongoing threat of nuclear terrorism presents major challenges to maintaining national security. Currently, only a small percentage of the cargo containers that enter America are searched for fissionable bomb making materials. This work reports on a multi-channel radiation detection platform enabled with nanoparticles that is capable of detecting and discriminating all types of radiation emitted from fissionable bomb making materials. Typical Geiger counters are limited to detecting only beta and gamma radiation. The micro-Geiger counter reported here detects all species of radiation including beta particles, gamma/X-rays, alpha particles, and neutrons. The multi-species detecting micro-Geiger counter contains a hermetically sealed …

School Administrators’ Perceptions Of School Violence, Stephanie Garrett, Casey Brown Oct 2009

School Administrators’ Perceptions Of School Violence, Stephanie Garrett, Casey Brown

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Across America, waves of violence within the school system have shocked and horrified American society. A generation of young people whose main focus should have been on hanging out with friends, getting homework done, not being late to class, going to the mall, or who their date to the prom was to be, instead, are engaged in a sometimes life and death struggle to survive the school day. The tragedy of Columbine High School, where two high school-aged gunmen took the lives of 13 students and teachers and wounded 23 others (Klein and Chancer 2000), while never to be forgotten, …

Some Psychological Variables Differentiating Between Adolescents With Step-Parents And Those Without Step-Parents, Alaba Adenuga, A. Odusole

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The well being of adolescents has become topic of increasing interest among researchers in general. It is now regarded as something worthy of empirical investigation by researchers in eliciting without faking, the true status of the living and parenting conditions of adolescents (Marks 1998; Leug and Jim Park 2000). Newman (1994) however observed that there has been great increase in divorce rate that is threatening the marriage institution on the pages of parent media and also on the electronic media. Worse still, the failure rate of second marriages has been found to be higher than that of first-time marriages which …

Transforming Schools: A Practical Guide For Empowering Change Agents To Facilitate Diversity Transformation, Michael Mott Oct 2009

Transforming Schools: A Practical Guide For Empowering Change Agents To Facilitate Diversity Transformation, Michael Mott

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

For several years now we have all been made aware via numerous media sources and publishing outlets that the demographics of United States K-12 student body and teaching faculty is rapidly transforming into an increasingly more racial, ethnic and religious melting pot representing our democratic societal milieu. Recent research has pointed out the value that a diverse teaching and learning community offers by supporting multiple viewpoints that expand the understandings we develop about ourselves and the world in order that we contribute to our democracy (Banks, 2007). Diversity textbooks cover teacher methods for best practice. Yet for elementary and secondary …

Structure Of The Photochemical Reaction Path Populated Via Promotion Of Cf2i2 Into Its First Excited State, Patrick Z. El-Khoury, Alexander N. Tarnovsky, Igor Schapiro, Mikhail N. Ryazantsev, Massimo Olivucci Oct 2009

Structure Of The Photochemical Reaction Path Populated Via Promotion Of Cf2i2 Into Its First Excited State, Patrick Z. El-Khoury, Alexander N. Tarnovsky, Igor Schapiro, Mikhail N. Ryazantsev, Massimo Olivucci

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The photochemical reaction path following the promotion of CF2I2 into its lowest-lying excited electronic singlet state has been modeled using ab initio multiconfigurational quantum chemical calculations. It is found that a conical intersection drives the electronically excited CF2I2* species either to the CF2I + I radical pair or back to the starting CF2I2 structure. The structures of the computed relaxation pathways explain the photoproduct selectivity previously observed in the gas phase. Furthermore, the results provide the basis for explaining the condensed-phase photochemistry of CF2I2.

Precautionary Principle In The International Tribunal For The Law Of The Sea, Yoona Cho Oct 2009

Precautionary Principle In The International Tribunal For The Law Of The Sea, Yoona Cho

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The World Trade Organization (“WTO”) encourages its members to fully exhaust negotiations and consultations before bringing a case before its Dispute Settlement Body. Indeed, a majority of all WTO disputes are resolved in consultations, allowing its members to gain accountability, “save face,” and preserve sovereignty. The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (“ITLOS”), an international environmental dispute resolution body, should follow the lead of the WTO in requiring a pre-dispute consultation period and encouraging its members to resolve differences outside of the Tribunal’s dispute settlement process. Although the WTO sets a fine example in the area of consultations …
