Perspectives In Gifted Education: Creativity, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver, Norma Hafenstein, Kim Haines, Bonnie Cramond

Perspectives in Gifted Education

This is the fifth in a series of monographs published through the Institute for the Development of Gifted Education at the University of Denver, and it has been graciously funded by the Lynde and Harry Bradley foundation. The first monograph contained different perspectives on the growth and development of young gifted children while the second addressed the characteristics and needs of the twice-exceptional - those who are gifted and also have some type of disabling condition. The third monograph focused on the personality and spiritual and character development of gifted children; the fourth explored giftedness in a variety of diverse, …

Just A Clean Blue Flame? Environmental Issues In The Barnett Shale, Hal R. Ray Jr. Oct 2009

Just A Clean Blue Flame? Environmental Issues In The Barnett Shale, Hal R. Ray Jr.

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This paper addresses current environmental law issues affecting the Barnett Shale and the businesses and people who are impacted by development activities in the play. It will look first at recent scientific studies suggesting that production of natural gas in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex may have a greater impact on the region's air pollution challenges than previously thought. The article next examines air permitting requirements relating to gas production equipment and facilities. The article discusses oil and gas disposal wells and recent cases examining regulatory issues affecting permits for these wells. Finally, the paper spotlights two common law causes of …

Does There Need To Be A Texas Tea Party? Mineral Estate Taxation With Representation, Joseph R. Kimball Ii Oct 2009

Does There Need To Be A Texas Tea Party? Mineral Estate Taxation With Representation, Joseph R. Kimball Ii

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The Texas Tax Code sets forth how all taxes in Texas should be levied and against what party or property on which the tax should be levied. In the instance of mineral estate taxation, however, a conflict resides in how the oil and gas terms are defined and how these definitions apply to taxing mineral estates. The courts, however, are in bed with the State in the taxation dilemma. The application of the tax code to mineral "interests" is quite a mathematical achievement whose methodology cannot be protested. So, as in the urban mineral estate, how does one protest the …

Military Might And Political, Economic, And Social Institutions: A Global Time Series Empirical Test Of Terrorism, Jibey Asthappan Oct 2009

Military Might And Political, Economic, And Social Institutions: A Global Time Series Empirical Test Of Terrorism, Jibey Asthappan

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

"This study, in an effort to uncover root reasons for terrorism, will delve into the issue of terrorism by testing if economic, social, and political factors have an effect on terrorism. It is the intention of this study to suggest policies that address the source of terrorist motivations rather than the symptoms. Using data from RAND and the World Bank that spans 12 years8, the researcher uses a negative binomial time series analysis to answer several hypotheses probing the relationship of political, social, and economic institutions’ effect on terrorist incidents. Establishing that terrorism is a rational behavior is …

The Fundability And Marketability Of Green Buildings At Public Universities: Transcending The Funding Paradigm At Cal Poly, Eileen E. Joseph Oct 2009

The Fundability And Marketability Of Green Buildings At Public Universities: Transcending The Funding Paradigm At Cal Poly, Eileen E. Joseph

Master's Theses

While in recent years Cal Poly has moved in the direction of sustainable building, my research indicates that where other CSU’s have succeeded, Cal Poly has been challenged in developing the type of green buildings that would truly make new construction projects more sustainable. The most commonly cited barriers are cost and lack of funding. The outcome however (as evidenced by other CSU’s) is not just driven by the state’s capital outlay process that has historically supported new construction on CSU campuses. It is determined by the priorities, perceptions and values that have influenced Cal Poly’s decision makers and driven …

Scope Of The Second Amendment Right – Post-Heller Standard Of Review, Ivan E. Bodensteiner Oct 2009

Scope Of The Second Amendment Right – Post-Heller Standard Of Review, Ivan E. Bodensteiner

Law Faculty Publications

This article addresses an important issue not decided by the Court in Heller, i.e., the size or scope of the Second Amendment right identified in that case. Heller is a victory for those opposed to gun control legislation, but it could turn out to be a limited victory, depending on the standard of review adopted to decide Second Amendment challenges to gun control laws. I argue the Court should adopt a heightened rational basis standard that rewards an enlightened legislative process and gives deference to the laws that result from this process. Gun control laws serve an important governmental function, …

Neuropeptide Y Is Expressed By Osteocytes And Can Inhibit Osteoblastic Activity, John C. Igwe, Xi Jiang, Frane Paic, Li Ma, Douglas J. Adams, Carol C. Pilbeam, Ivo Kalajzic

UCHC Articles - Research

Osteocytes are the most abundant osteoblast lineage cells within the bone matrix. They respond to mechanical stimulation and can participate in the release of regulatory proteins that can modulate the activity of other bone cells. We hypothesize that neuropeptide Y (NPY), a neurotransmitter with regulatory functions in bone formation, is produced by osteocytes and can affect osteoblast activity. To study the expression of NPY by the osteoblast lineage cells, we utilized transgenic mouse models in which we can identify and isolate populations of osteoblasts and osteocytes. The Col2.3GFP transgene is active in osteoblasts and osteocytes, while the DMP1 promoter drives …

Creating A Culture Of Accountability: The Prosecution Of Gender Crimes In The Icty, Alice Hansen Oct 2009

Creating A Culture Of Accountability: The Prosecution Of Gender Crimes In The Icty, Alice Hansen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study investigates if the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) successfully creates a culture of accountability through its prosecution of gender crime. It first frames the concepts of sexual violence in war as well as accountability theoretically, and describes the historical context of the war in the former Yugoslavia. The ideas of ethnic identity, gender roles, and rape as a war crime are placed against a historical and cultural background. Next, it uses twelve Statements of Guilt issued by the ICTY as a means to discuss the definition and creation of a culture of accountability within the …

An Archaeological Perspective On The Andean Concept Of Camaquen: Thinking Through Late Pre-Columbian Ofrendas And Huacas, Tamara L. Bray Oct 2009

An Archaeological Perspective On The Andean Concept Of Camaquen: Thinking Through Late Pre-Columbian Ofrendas And Huacas, Tamara L. Bray

Anthropology Faculty Research Publications

Ethnohistoric sources suggest that the indigenous inhabitants of Andean South America saw both people and things as animated or enlivened by a common vital force (camaquen). In approaching the subject of camaquen archaeologically, I attempt to place objects and their materiality at the analytical center, rather than the normally privileged ethnohistoric or ethnographic data, in order to see what new insights into the nature of precolumbian ontologies might be gained from ‘thinking through things.’ In this, I follow recent theories premised on the idea that the traditional segregation of concepts and things may hinder understanding of alternative worlds. The study …

Motivational Factors Influencing Sport Spectator Involvement At Ncaa Division Ii Basketball Games, Yun Seok Choi, Jeffrey J. Martin, Meungguk Park, Taeho Yoh Oct 2009

Motivational Factors Influencing Sport Spectator Involvement At Ncaa Division Ii Basketball Games, Yun Seok Choi, Jeffrey J. Martin, Meungguk Park, Taeho Yoh

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivational factors affecting sport spectator involvement using 304 spectators from NCAA Division II men's and women's basketball games. Two aspects (behavioral and socio-psychological) of sport spectator involvement were examined. The results revealed that spectators at intercollegiate basketball games had a higher level of socio-psychological involvement than behavioral involvement. A series of multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the affects of sociomotivational factors (perceived value, fan identification, involvement opportunity, and reference groups) on sport spectator involvement. Fan identification, involvement opportunity, and reference groups were identified as influential factors that had a …
