Provenir Ontology: Towards A Framework For Escience Provenance Management, Satya S. Sahoo, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Provenance metadata describes the 'lineage' or history of an entity and necessary information to verify the quality of data, validate experiment protocols, and associate trust value with scientific results. eScience projects generate data and the associated provenance metadata in a distributed environment (such as myGrid) and on a very large scale that often precludes manual analysis. Given this scenario, provenance information should be, (a) interoperable across projects, research groups, and application domains, and (b) support analysis over large datasets using reasoning to discover implicit information. In this paper, we introduce an ontology-driven framework for eScience provenance management underpinned by an …

Knockdown Of The Drosophila Gtpase Nucleostemin 1 Impairs Large Ribosomal Subunit Biogenesis, Cell Growth, And Midgut Precursor Cell Maintenance, Raphyel Rosby, Cui Zhengfang, Emily Rogers, Megan A. Delivron, Victoria L. Robinson, Patrick J. Dimario Oct 2009

Knockdown Of The Drosophila Gtpase Nucleostemin 1 Impairs Large Ribosomal Subunit Biogenesis, Cell Growth, And Midgut Precursor Cell Maintenance, Raphyel Rosby, Cui Zhengfang, Emily Rogers, Megan A. Delivron, Victoria L. Robinson, Patrick J. Dimario

Faculty Publications

Mammalian nucleostemin (NS) is a nucleolar guanosine triphosphate-binding protein implicated in cell cycle progression, stem cell proliferation, and ribosome assembly. Drosophila melanogaster contains a four-member nucleostemin family (NS1-4). NS1 is the closest orthologue to human NS; it shares 33% identity and 67% similarity with human NS. We show that NS1 has intrinsic GTPase and ATPase activity and that it is present within nucleoli of most larval and adult cells. Endogenous NS1 and lightly expressed green fluorescent protein (GFP)-NS1 enrich within the nucleolar granular regions as expected, whereas overexpressed GFP-NS1 localized throughout the nucleolus and nucleoplasm, and to several transcriptionally active …

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

From just a concept, Harlot has grown into a space with a character of its own, one that doesn't lie still but continues to move and change and take on the attributes of every new reader, every new creator, every new reviewer, and every new word, image, and sound. It's alive! And it's definitely making good on its reputation as the harlot of the arts. (It doesn't always obey us, either.) This is Harlot's house — we just play here.

Why The Duke Lacrosse Scandal Mattered — Three Perspectives [Reflections On The Duke Lacrosse Case -- Toward An Ethic Of Empathy], Heather Lee Branstetter

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

When a controversial event forces the contemporary American public to engage with important socio-political issues that intersect with constructions of race, gender, and class, the underlying social conditions too often remain unexamined. Our public discourse instead works to sensationalize and polarize discussion of such events; as an effect, participants in the discourse engage in rhetorical strategies that rely on the emotions of indignation, anger, and blame. This essay looks back to the discursive exchanges that arose in response to the Duke lacrosse scandal of 2006. I analyze three "representative" patterns of public response, while also interpreting the cultural conditions that …
