The Effects Of Processing Instruction, Structured Input, And Visual Input Enhancement On The Acquisition Of The Subjunctive In Adjectival Clauses By Intermediate-Level Distance Learners Of Spanish, Victoria Russell Jan 2009

The Effects Of Processing Instruction, Structured Input, And Visual Input Enhancement On The Acquisition Of The Subjunctive In Adjectival Clauses By Intermediate-Level Distance Learners Of Spanish, Victoria Russell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of processing instruction (PI) on the acquisition of the subjunctive in adjectival clauses by 92 intermediate-level distance learners of Spanish. PI is a novel instructional technique that is based on VanPatten's principles of input processing (1993, 1996, 2002, 2004), and it has three key components: (a) an explicit explanation of grammar that is not paradigmatic, (b) information on processing strategies, and (c) structured input tasks and activities. Structured input activities were isolated and combined with computerized visual input enhancement (VIE) in an attempt to increase the salience of targeted grammatical forms for web based delivery. …

The Importance Of Benthic Habitats As Reservoirs Of Persistent Fecal Indicator Bacteria, Brian D. Badgley Jan 2009

The Importance Of Benthic Habitats As Reservoirs Of Persistent Fecal Indicator Bacteria, Brian D. Badgley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Enterococci are fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) that are used worldwide for water

quality assessment. However, evidence of high densities and extended survival of

enterococci in sediments and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) has caused uncertainty

about their reliability in predicting human health risks from recreational activities in

environmental waters. To address the concern that sediments and SAV may harbor large

reservoirs of enterococci that can affect water column concentrations, aquatic mesocosms

and environmental sampling were employed to investigate patterns of enterococci

densities and population structure across the Tampa Bay watershed.

In mesocosm experiments and environmental samples, SAV harbored higher

densities of …

Immigrant-Established Resident Interactions In Miami, Florida, Alex Stepick, Carol Dutton Stepick Jan 2009

Immigrant-Established Resident Interactions In Miami, Florida, Alex Stepick, Carol Dutton Stepick

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines factors that affect interethnic relations in Miami, Florida. The theoretical framework, based on the ‘contact hypothesis’ argues that better interethnic relations stem from not only contact, but also contact in which individuals from opposing groups share equal status and a stake in outcomes, and when contact activities require cooperation. The contact hypothesis, however, does not address the factors that produce inequality in social relations. To address these factors ideas from international migration research are used to argue that those with power must create structures in which other groups feel welcome rather than rejected and that leaders must …

No Vacancy, Rebecca Dann, Beth Somerfield, Emily Rice, Briana Meier

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

Vacant lots and buildings, whether in stages of redevelopment or decline, are spaces in flux. Left unused, these empty spaces can pose difficult challenges for their owners and surrounding neighborhoods; however, the uncertain futures of vacant sites also present unique opportunities for a variety of temporary uses. In partnership with the Central Eastside Industrial Council, LocusLab is exploring the potential to enliven the Central Eastside Industrial District by activating vacant spaces with temporary activities and developments. We've worked to: uncover potential benefits of temporary use; find ways to overcome barriers faced by temporary projects; initiate a conversation between property owners, …

Neighborhood Climate Action Planning Handbook, Hannah Dondy-Kaplan, Erica Timm, Beth Cohen, Dyami Valentine, Mariah Vanzerr, Devin Moller

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

The City of Portland and Multnomah County are developing new plans and policies to meet greenhouse gas reduction goals of 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. To meet these new steep reduction targets, actions will be needed at every level of society. While neighborhoods have historically received little attention as a means of addressing climate change, they are ideally suited to bring people together to bridge the gap between individual actions and higher level government policies. To help neighborhoods develop strategies and actions to address climate change, C-Change Consultants worked with the Southeast Uplift Neighborhood Coalition to create a Neighborhood …

Three Times A Study: Business Students And The Library, Heidi Senior, Kerry Wu, Diane M. Martin, Margaret Mellinger Jan 2009

Three Times A Study: Business Students And The Library, Heidi Senior, Kerry Wu, Diane M. Martin, Margaret Mellinger

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Revisiting a study performed 30 years ago, researchers at three institutions surveyed undergraduate and graduate students in marketing courses to determine their attitudes toward and knowledge of library services and collections. Results found that 21st-century students are more likely to believe in the importance of library research, to have had library instruction, and to use Web sites and Internet search engines to begin their research. However, they are less likely to read business periodicals. Faced with a list of information sources, they are generally able to pick out a useful resource, although not always the most efficient. Implications for library …

Developing Sustainable Spacecraft Water Management Systems, Evan A. Thomas, David M. Klaus Jan 2009

Developing Sustainable Spacecraft Water Management Systems, Evan A. Thomas, David M. Klaus

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is well recognized that water handling systems used in a spacecraft are prone to failure caused by biofouling and mineral scaling, which can clog mechanical systems and degrade the performance of capillary-based technologies. Long duration spaceflight applications, such as extended stays at a Lunar Outpost or during a Mars transit mission, will increasingly benefit from hardware that is generally more robust and operationally sustainable overtime. This paper presents potential design and testing considerations for improving the reliability of water handling technologies for exploration spacecraft. Our application of interest is to devise a spacecraft wastewater management system wherein fouling can …

‘Community’, Semiotic Flows, And Mediated Contribution To Activity, Steven L. Thorne

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article begins with an overview and problematization of the term community through a brief assessment of its history, diverse uses, core attributes, heterogeneous elements, and collocational companions. Following this, I describe demographics and processes associated with collective engagement in digitally mediated environments. Utilizing select alternatives to the term ‘community’ and incorporating the cultural-historical notions of mediation and activity, I then present research describing exogenous influences affecting educational uses of technology in L2 settings, the use of instant messaging and blogging for out-of-class FL interaction at the secondary school level, and a pedagogically focused example of a remixing text posted …

Book Publishing In Western Australia: A World Elsewhere, Per Henningsgaard Jan 2009

Book Publishing In Western Australia: A World Elsewhere, Per Henningsgaard

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines the role of book publishing outside the cultural centres, where the lack of access to the gatekeepers of cultural production, such as literary agents, editors and publishers, has inhibited both the publishers’ and region’s reach into the public imagination. It takes Western Australia as a case study, analysing the impact of geographical regionalism on the processes of book production and publication. Western Australia is infrequently represented in the cultural record, much less in those aspects of the cultural record that are transmitted overseas. This imbalance in ‘cultural currency’ arises because regions are at least in part defined …

Radiative Transfer Theory Applied To Ocean Bottom Modeling, Lisa M. Zurk, Jorge Quijano Jan 2009

Radiative Transfer Theory Applied To Ocean Bottom Modeling, Lisa M. Zurk, Jorge Quijano

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research on the propagation of acoustic waves in the ocean bottom sediment is of interest for active sonar applications such as target detection and remote sensing. The interaction of acoustic energy with the sea floor sublayers is usually modeled with techniques based on the full solution of the wave equation, which sometimes leads to mathematically intractable problems. An alternative way to model wave propagation in layered media containing random scatterers is the radiative transfer RT formulation, which is a well established technique in the electromagnetics community and is based on the principle of conservation of energy. In this paper, the …

The Coffee House Classroom: The Difference Between Student And Faculty Perceptions Of Classroom Spatial Design In A Community College Environment, Katherine Kent Jan 2009

The Coffee House Classroom: The Difference Between Student And Faculty Perceptions Of Classroom Spatial Design In A Community College Environment, Katherine Kent

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the ever increasing need for employees who are capable of problem solving, working in team-based projects, and engaging in professional discourse, it is questionable whether these activities are, or can be, supported and promoted in the typical community college classroom environment containing traditional rows of desks and computers with a professor front and center. These traditional classroom arrangements discourage participatory activities and engagements with peers and faculty due to the very nature of the inflexible and impersonal alignment of side-by-side, row seating. This study investigated the impact of the physical furnishings and the spatial arrangement of a classroom environment …

Subordinate employees at the Holiday Inn Rochester Airport and the RIT Inn and Conference Center served as a convenience sample. The results show that overall, employees like more responsive managers. Although statistically nonsignificant, assertiveness was positively related to having a good relationship. The results, overall, indicate that the assertiveness and responsiveness relate …

A Novel Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescein Isothiocyanate Labeled Poly(Styrenesulfonate Sodium Salt), Xiaowei Tong Jan 2009

A Novel Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescein Isothiocyanate Labeled Poly(Styrenesulfonate Sodium Salt), Xiaowei Tong

LSU Master's Theses

The diffusion of polyelectrolytes in low-salt or salt-free aqueous solutions is a controversial question. It has been intensively discussed since it was discovered in 1978. Most previous experimental data were obtained from dynamic light scattering (DLS), whose precision, however, was reduced by stringent sample preparation and weak scattering of polyelectrolyte in low-salt solution. For the most commonly studied polyelectrolyte, poly(styrenesulfonate sodium salt) (NaPSS), the harsh polymerization condition and the manufacturing procedure lead to hydrophobic defects and aggregations, which also block a correct insight about the diffusion of polyelectrolyte. In contrast to DLS, fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR) directly looks on the …

Pore-Scale Analysis Of Dnapl Dissolution And Biomass Distribution, Keegan L. Roberts Jan 2009

Pore-Scale Analysis Of Dnapl Dissolution And Biomass Distribution, Keegan L. Roberts

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A comparison of equilibrium and non-equilibrium dissolution of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was conducted to ascertain how PCE saturation, individual blob properties (volume, surface area, sphericity), and PCE occupied pores are affected by two distinct dissolution regimes. One-dimensional columns were imaged at various dissolution stages using high resolution (~10 um) synchrotron x-ray tomography (XT) and image subvolumes were analyzed using a series of grain, pore network structure, and blob analysis algorithms. An analysis of algorithm-generated data was conducted to determine grain and pore statistics, PCE saturation and individual blob properties, and correlations between PCE blobs and pore network structure. Grain and pore …
