High School Transformation: The Lived Experience Of Teachers Moving To Small Learning Environments, Reginald Lawrence Jan 2009

High School Transformation: The Lived Experience Of Teachers Moving To Small Learning Environments, Reginald Lawrence

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Author's abstract: Educators faced with a decline in student achievement and increases in dropout rates are seeking ways to provide the best possible educational environment for students (Oxley, 2005). High school transformation, also known as the small schools movement, is a reform that is gaining currency in the world of education (Meier, 2006). Alien (2001) observed that high school transformation is the process of altering the makeup of a large comprehensive high school, also known as a traditional high school, into small high schools or small learning communities at the same location. The teacher is the most important component of …

Global Warming And The Problem Of Policy Innovation: Lessons From The Early Environmental Movement, Christopher H. Schroeder Jan 2009

Global Warming And The Problem Of Policy Innovation: Lessons From The Early Environmental Movement, Christopher H. Schroeder

Faculty Scholarship

When it comes to influencing government decisions, special interests have some built-in advantages over the general public interest. When the individual members of special interest groups have a good deal to gain or lose as a result of government action, special interests can organize more effectively, and generate benefits for elected officials, such as campaign contributions and other forms of political support. They will seek to use those advantages to influence government decisions favorable to them. The public choice theory of government decision making sometimes comes close to elevating this point into a universal law, suggesting that the general public …

Introduction, Justin O'Connor, Lily Kong Jan 2009

Introduction, Justin O'Connor, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The cultural and creative industries have become increasingly prominent in many policy agendas in recent years. Not only have governments identified the growing consumer potential for cultural/creative industry products in the home market, they have also seen the creative industry agenda as central to the growth of external markets. This agenda stresses creativity, innovation, small business growth, and access to global markets—all central to a wider agenda of moving from cheap manufacture towards high value-added products and services. The increasing importance of cultural and creative industries in national and city policy agendas is evident in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South …

Traditions Of Philanthropic Order, Christine Dunn Henderson Jan 2009

Traditions Of Philanthropic Order, Christine Dunn Henderson

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Individuals act more or less simultaneously as economic agents, citizens, and participants in civil society. Their interactions and their ways of fulfilling these roles take many forms. Not all of them can be said to be self-organizing, yet in several instances patterns of organization emerge spontaneously without being deliberately designed. Of course, the market economy—or “catallaxy,” as F. A. Hayek called it—remains the best example of such “spontaneous orders.” But there are others. Gus diZerega (2000), for example, has identified science and democracy as being similarly constituted by self-referential, self-organizing (some authors prefer the term autopoietic) processes. In this paper …

Making Sustainable Creative/Cultural Space In Shanghai And Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 2009

Making Sustainable Creative/Cultural Space In Shanghai And Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Shanghai and Singapore are two economically vibrant Asian cities that have recently adopted creative/cultural economy strategies. In this article I examine new spatial expressions of cultural and economic interests in the two cities: state-vaunted cultural edifices and organically evolved cultural spaces. I discuss the simultaneous precariousness and sustainability of these spaces, focusing on Shanghai's Grand Theatre and Moganshan Lu and on Singapore's Esplanade-Theatres by the Bay and Wessex Estate. Their cultural sustainability is understood as their ability to support the development of indigenous content and local idioms in artistic work. Their social sustainability is examined in terms of the social …

If We Seek, Do We Learn?: Predicting Knowledge Of Global Warming, Leeann Kahlor, Sonny Rosenthal Jan 2009

If We Seek, Do We Learn?: Predicting Knowledge Of Global Warming, Leeann Kahlor, Sonny Rosenthal

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Derived from the risk information seeking and processing model (RISP), this study sought to isolate predictors of the public's knowledge of global warming. Using a national sample ( N = 805), multiple regression yielded a number of significant relationships among 13 moderators. Notably, the number of media sources used for information about global warming, information seeking effort, and general education were relatively strong predictors of knowledge. Counter to expectations, informational subjective norms were inversely related to knowledge.

The yields from AL and Peds Plus/F media were the same with equal volumes of blood, but recovery was faster from AL medium than Peds Plus/F medium (10.7 and 16.4 h, respectively) (P < 0.001).

More Than A Cultural Celebration: The Politics Of Chinese New Year In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon Jan 2009

More Than A Cultural Celebration: The Politics Of Chinese New Year In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the aftermath of the May 1998 riots that forced President Suharto to step down, ethnic Chinese received unprecedented freedom to assert their long suppressed cultural and religious identity. Following the transition from assimilation to multiculturalism, for the first time in over three decades Chinese culture became more visible and ethnic Chinese could finally enjoy the freedom to celebrate Chinese New Year (Imlek) publicly. This article focuses on the politics of the re-emergent Chinese New Year celebration in the Indonesian public sphere. It demonstrates the significance of Imlek as an ethnic symbol to Chinese-Indonesians. Borrowing Hobsbawm’s concept of “invented tradition”, …

Role Of Inspiration In Increasing Situational Motivation In Male Team Athletes, Stephen Patrick Gonzalez Jan 2009

Role Of Inspiration In Increasing Situational Motivation In Male Team Athletes, Stephen Patrick Gonzalez

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Motivation and inspiration are often used superficially and synonymously in media coverage of sport. Sportscasters and reporters speculate about athlete motivation cite inspirational locker room speeches from coaches as a motivational source. Research in and out of sport psychology has developed and verified theories to describe mechanisms of motivation change (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Vallerand, 1997), but there is little research on the role of inspiration (Thrash & Elliot; 2003, 2004). The current study aimed to determine if inspiration can be manipulated, and if so, how increased inspiration impacts situational motivation of athletes. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed that …

The Perceptions Of Superintendents And Principals In Georgia Regarding The Mandated 65 Percent Rule, Sonia M. Bacon Jan 2009

The Perceptions Of Superintendents And Principals In Georgia Regarding The Mandated 65 Percent Rule, Sonia M. Bacon

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The 21st Century has brought about an increased need for creative strategies to improve student achievement. As school districts across the nation implement innovative methods for meeting the challenge of raising academic performance, each district is also faced with balancing the budget to fund academic needs while maintaining the daily operations associated with running a school district. More specifically, in some states each school district is required to spend 65 percent of the operational budget on direct classroom instruction and using the remaining 35 percent to meet all other needs of the school district. Across the nation this is known …

Bridging The Divide: Principles For Healthy Corporate Social Responsibility Partnerships, Mark Gordon, Donna Daniels Jan 2009

Bridging The Divide: Principles For Healthy Corporate Social Responsibility Partnerships, Mark Gordon, Donna Daniels

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

In its infancy, corporate social responsibility (CSR) focused on environmental issues rather than the provision of a wider array of support to local communities. Today, CSR includes strong partnerships between multinational corporations and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Previous research has demonstrated that corporations that partner with NGOs are more visible to their key stakeholders. Through a longitudinal, in-depth study of Merck Thailand and the Raks Thai Foundation in Bangkok, Thailand, this case study identified best practices for a multinational company interested in partnering with a local NGO. From those practices, the research identified the key principles that sustain the partnership: leadership, …

Click Or Clique? Using Educational Technology To Address Students’ Anxieties About Peer Evaluation, Ruth Walker, Graham Barwell Jan 2009

Click Or Clique? Using Educational Technology To Address Students’ Anxieties About Peer Evaluation, Ruth Walker, Graham Barwell

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Peer bias is recognised as a primary factor in negative student perceptions of peer assessment strategies. This study trialled the use of classroom response systems, widely known as clickers, in small seminar classes in order to actively engage students in their subject’s assessment process while providing the anonymity that would lessen the impact of peer pressure. Focus group reflection on the students’ impressions of the peer evaluation process, the use of clickers, and their anxieties about potential peer bias were analysed in the light of the results of teacher and class evaluations of each individual student presentation. The findings revealed …

The knowledge transfer is undisputedly important subjects as knowledge provides competitive advantage to firms. Only few percentages of the Turkish textile and apparel industries are engaged in knowledge transfer activity although it is recorded as the largest industry in Turkish economy. Turkish textile and apparel industries are mostly run by family and most of them are either unaware or reluctant to involve in the knowledge transfer activities. This study examines the knowledge transfer activities in Turkish SMEs through qualitative research and quantitative analysis by …

3g Migration In Pakistan, Unzila Pervaiz Jan 2009

3g Migration In Pakistan, Unzila Pervaiz

Theses

The telecommunication industry in Pakistan has come a long way since the country's independence in 1947. The initial era could be fairly termed as the PTCL (Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited) monopoly, for it was the sole provider of all telecommunication services across the country. It was not until four decades later that the region embarked into the new world of wireless communication, hence ending the decades old PTCL monopoly. By the end of the late 1990's, government support and international investment in the region opened new doors to innovation and better quality, low cost, healthy competition. Wireless licenses for the …

4-Methoxy-2-(5-H/methyl/chloro/nitro-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-phenol(HL_X; X=1-4) ligands and HL_1 complexes with Fe(NO_3)_3, Cu(NO_3)_2, AgNO_3, and Zn(NO_3)_2 were synthesized and characterized. The structures of the compounds were confirmed on the basis of elemental analysis, molar conductivity, magnetic moment, FT-IR, UV-visible, and ^1H- and ^{13}C-NMR. Antibacterial activity of the free ligands, their hydrochloride salts, and the complexes was evaluated using the disk diffusion method in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as well as the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) dilution method, against 9 bacteria, and the results were compared with penicillin-G and oxytetracycline. It was observed that HL_1, [Ag(HL_1)](NO_3), and [Cu(L_1)_2](H_2O)_2 are effective on S. epidermidis, S. aureus, and …

H_2{So}_4-Silica As An Efficient And Chemoselective Catalyst For The Synthesis Of Acylal From Aldehydes Under Solvent-Free Conditions, Seied Ali Pourmousavi, Zahra Zinati Jan 2009

H_2{So}_4-Silica As An Efficient And Chemoselective Catalyst For The Synthesis Of Acylal From Aldehydes Under Solvent-Free Conditions, Seied Ali Pourmousavi, Zahra Zinati

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A variety of aldehydes react with acetic anhydride in the presence of a catalytic amount of H_2SO_4-silica to afford the corresponding 1,1-diacetates (acylals) in excellent yields. Ketones are not affected under the reaction conditions. The advantages are the simplicity of the acylation procedure, and the relatively non-toxic nature of the catalyst as well as its easy availability and low cost.

Study Of Binary Complexes Of Nickel(Ii), Copper(Ii), And Vanadium(V) With Acetazolamide In Aqueous Medium By Voltammetry, İclal Bulut Jan 2009

Study Of Binary Complexes Of Nickel(Ii), Copper(Ii), And Vanadium(V) With Acetazolamide In Aqueous Medium By Voltammetry, İclal Bulut

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The voltammetric behaviour of acetazolamide, the systemic carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, in the presence of some metal ions (Cu(II), Ni(II), and V(V)) were investigated using square-wave and cyclic voltammetry in physiological pH (pH 7.4). Square-wave voltammogram of acetazolamide in the absence of metal ions gave only 1 reduction peak at -1.65 V attributed to a catalytic hydrogen peak. Three reversible peaks at -0.068, -0.262, and -0.434 V were observed for the solutions containing both copper(II) ions and acetazolamide in the SWV. The peak at -0.434 V was attributed to Cu(II)-acetazolamide complex. In the presence of acetazolamide, copper-acetazolamide complex formation was proved …
