Detecting Dissimilarities In Em Constitutive Parameters Using Differential Imaging Operator On Reconstructed Wavefield, Md. Ishfaqur Raza, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic field will scatter when incident on boundaries separating media with different constitutive parameters. This paper demonstrates the use of a differential operator on recorded scattered waves to reveal the shape of the boundary. The method is noninvasive and is composed of three phases. First, the area of interest is illuminated and the resulting scattered electromagnetic fields are recorded. In the 2nd phase, the captured data is numerically reverse simulated in time to reconstruct the field distribution in the region of interest. Finally, the differential imaging operator is applied on the reconstructed wave field, creating an image delineating the boundary …

How Hospital Environmental Managers Learn Compliance: A Learning Process Model, Victoria Anne Jas Jan 2009

How Hospital Environmental Managers Learn Compliance: A Learning Process Model, Victoria Anne Jas

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Recent national media coverage of hospital mismanagement of hazardous materialsand waste has brought the practices of all hospitals into public scrutiny. Many people are amazed to learn that there is no national training or accreditation program for environmental management in hospitals. Hospitals are held to the same standards for hazardous materials management as are corporations in the industrial sector. Rural hospitals are particularly challenged because they have few resources. Overall, small hospitals need much improvement, but there are also examples of where individuals have done exemplary innovative work in improving environmental management. In this study I investigated the challenge rural …

The purpose is to generate narrative descriptions of ecologists’ experiences in order to communicate about both the scientific ecology and human ecology of climate change. Twenty prominent field ecologists participated in this study. Interviews with ecologists were transcribed and analyzed using a hermeneutic phenomenological methodology. Eight experiential themes emerged through the process of data analysis, and these themes provide the structure for presenting narratives of ecologists’ experiences. The eight themes are: thinking ecologically, the …

Voting Integrity: Practices For Investors And The Global Proxy Advisory Industry, Meagan Thompson-Mann Jan 2009

Voting Integrity: Practices For Investors And The Global Proxy Advisory Industry, Meagan Thompson-Mann

Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership

Accountability of corporate boards to shareowners rests in large part on the integrity of the system by which investors vote their proxy ballots. Shareowners rely on the vote to affect the governance of a company; corporate directors see the vote as a barometer of investor confidence in board stewardship. Outcomes determine the fate of director tenure, mergers, acquisitions, capital raising, remuneration plans and other critical decisions with sometimes profound consequences for stakeholders and the marketplace.

However, this briefing finds that the proxy voting system in the US and other markets is chronically subject to criticism that it is short on …

Identity Development Of Latino Gay Men, Manuel Montoya Tajon Jan 2009

Identity Development Of Latino Gay Men, Manuel Montoya Tajon

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Much has been written on gay identity development and ethnic identity, but research conducted that examines the cross-section of both identities is very limited. Several theories have been proposed which detail gay and lesbian identity development, which involve a conversion of attitudes, values, beliefs, and behavior from a dominant heterosexual culture to those of the minority gay and lesbian culture. Likewise, ethnic identity models propose similar stage sequential processes and conversion from a dominant Anglo culture to those of a minority ethnic culture. Both the ethnic and gay identity development models function and are based on two dichotomous variables (e.g., …

Healthcare is a complex and dynamic environment containing a plurality of social forces and perspectives that shape the organizational culture and the nature of the leadership. As leadership is a social phenomenon, it is important to understand the complex social processes that mediate our perceptions and that in turn influence processes of leader attribution. The central purpose of this study has been to illuminate the nature of culturally specific processes that emerge within a specific organizational setting and that fuel leader attribution and the social construction of leadership. Accordingly, this qualitative study has developed a Grounded Theory utilizing Situational Analysis …

Subsidizing Creativity Through Network Design: Zero Pricing And Net Neutrality, Robin S. Lee, Tim Wu Jan 2009

Subsidizing Creativity Through Network Design: Zero Pricing And Net Neutrality, Robin S. Lee, Tim Wu

Faculty Scholarship

Today, through historical practice, there exists a de facto ban on termination fees – also referred to as a “zero-price” rule (Hemphill, 2008) – which forbids an Internet service provider from charging an additional fee to a content provider who wishes to reach that ISP’s customers. The question is whether this zero-pricing structure should be preserved, or whether carriers should be allowed to charge termination fees and engage in other practices that have the effect of requiring payment to reach users. This paper begins with a defense of the de facto zero-price rule currently in existence. We point out that …

Cross-Disciplinary Approaches For Developing Serious Games In Higher Education: Frameworks For Food Safety And Environmental Health Education, Pauline Rooney, K.C. O'Rourke, Greg Burke, Brian Mac Namee, Claudia Igbrude

Conference papers

While some educators have adopted commercial off the-shelf games for use in the classroom, such games may not always meet the individual requirements of lecturers whose courses are tied to specific learning utcomes. An alternative is to capitalise on in-house expertise in Higher Education and create serious games through cross-disciplinary team projects. This paper outlines such a project within one Higher Education institution. It describes synergies created across disciplines as a result of the collaboration on game design and implementation. It looks at tensions generated between the pedagogical requirements (of lecturers), entertainment objectives (of games designers) and technical excellence (sought …

Sampling Edge Covers, William August Rummler Jan 2009

Sampling Edge Covers, William August Rummler

Theses

The random generation or sampling of combinatorial objects has important applications to statistical analyses in various domains, including physics and evolutionary biology. Some objects whose sampling has been well-studied are contingency tables, matchings, and independent sets. Edge covers are related to matchings in graph theory; however, their association does not appear to be of the sort where results for sampling matchings imply results for sampling edge covers. Consequently, we investigate the sampling of edge covers and prove that efficiently sampling so-called (1,2)-edge covers is possible under reasonable restrictions.

Sustainability Through Community Planning: A Substantive Level Approach, Toni Soji Ola Jan 2009

Sustainability Through Community Planning: A Substantive Level Approach, Toni Soji Ola

Plymouth Business School Theses

This study identified ways of translating sustainability and sustainable development aims and objectives into practical means in a local government setting, through action research, thereby contributing to the global sustainability debate. This is in an attempt to fill the gap identified in literature, which relates to the paucity of research on translating sustainability into practical means. In achieving one of its aims, the study proposed three levels of abstraction in the form of globalisation theory, sustainability theory and applied sustainable development, conceptualised as grand theory, meso theory and substantive theory. The linkage between these theories was established, thereby contributing and …

Analysis Of Virtual Environments Through A Web Based Visualization Tool, Ronald Valente Jan 2009

Analysis Of Virtual Environments Through A Web Based Visualization Tool, Ronald Valente

Theses

Virtualization is gaining popularity in corporations as well as academia. This technology provides a large return on investment by providing the ability to consolidate hardware servers into smaller, more efficient virtual machines (VM). With a seemingly negligible cost to deploy a new virtual machine when compared to deploying a physical server, more and more virtual machines get deployed. However, as the number of virtual machine increases, the task of managing and keeping track of them becomes exceedingly cumber- some. With advanced visualization techniques and real-time analysis of virtualization environments, the control over virtual machine sprawl will become more manageable and …

Designing A Cell Phone Application To Alert And Report Drinking Water Quality To South Africans, Deana Brown Jan 2009

Designing A Cell Phone Application To Alert And Report Drinking Water Quality To South Africans, Deana Brown

Theses

Drinking water quality, especially in many parts of South Africa, is far below acceptable standards. With an annual estimate of 43, 000 deaths from diarrheal diseases, 3 million cases of illness and treatment costs of over half a billion US dollars, the impact is critical (Mackintosh & Colvin, 2003). To address this issue the Aquatest project seeks to develop a simplified low-cost water quality test kit and information management solution. This would allow Water Service Providers, especially in rural areas, to monitor water quality and distribute test data to the necessary parties - Water Service Authorities and consumers. This research …

Range Voting Is Resistant To Control, Curtis Menton Jan 2009

Range Voting Is Resistant To Control, Curtis Menton

Theses

Social choice theory is concerned with developing and evaluating voting systems, both for the use of political and organizational elections and for use as decision making process for multiagent systems. Particularly in the context of multiagent systems, computational resistance to various types of control has become a desired property of a voting system. Though manipulative actions may always be possible, strong computational barriers to efficient control can give us sufficient confidence in the integrity of an election. Range Voting is a natural extension of approval voting that is resistant to a large number of cases of control. In particular, the …

Algorithms For Testing Equivalence Of Finite Automata, With A Grading Tool For Jflap, Daphne Norton Jan 2009

Algorithms For Testing Equivalence Of Finite Automata, With A Grading Tool For Jflap, Daphne Norton

Theses

A wide variety of algorithms can be used to determine the equivalence of two Deterministic Finite Automata (DFAs) and/or Nondeterministic Finite Automata (NFAs). This project focuses on three key areas: 1. A detailed discussion of several algorithms that can be used to prove the equivalence of two DFAs (and/or NFAs, since every NFA has an equivalent DFA), with an analysis of the time complexity involved in each case. 2. Modifications to a few of these algorithms to produce a 'witness' string if the two automata are not equivalent. This string is accepted by one of the automata, but not by …

Tunable Laser Interrogation Of Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors, Vaibhav Badjatya Jan 2009

Tunable Laser Interrogation Of Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors, Vaibhav Badjatya

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Surface plasmons are bound TM polarized electromagnetic waves that propagate along the interface of two materials with real dielectric constants of opposite signs. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors make use of the surface plasmon waves to detect refractive index changes occurring near this interface. For sensing purposes, this interface typically consists of a metal layer, usually gold or silver, and a liquid dielectric. SPR sensors usually measure the shift in resonance wavelength or resonance angle due to index changes adjacent to the metal layer. However this restricts the limit of detection (LOD), as the regions of low slope (intensity vs. …

Nanomechanical Characterizations Of High Temperature Polymer Matrix Composite Resin: Pmr-15 Polyimide, David C. Jones Jan 2009

Nanomechanical Characterizations Of High Temperature Polymer Matrix Composite Resin: Pmr-15 Polyimide, David C. Jones

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

High Temperature Polymer Matrix Composites (HTPMCs) are widely used by the aerospace industry today because of their high specific strengths, light weight, and the ability to custom tailor their mechanical properties to individual applications. Because of the harsh environmental conditions these materials experience during service use, these composite structures are susceptible to a high rate of thermo-oxidative degradation that ultimately causes premature failure in service. The current knowledge base is lacking in the fundamental spatial variability of the constituent materials upon aging, which precludes composite developers from predicting lifetime mechanical properties of the composites in use. The current study summarizes …

Angiotensin Ii Induction Of Regional Effects In Murine Vasculature, Albert Phillip Owens Iii Jan 2009

Angiotensin Ii Induction Of Regional Effects In Murine Vasculature, Albert Phillip Owens Iii

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The renin angiotensin system (RAS) exerts many diverse physiological functions throughout the body, mediated by its effector peptide, angiotensin II (AngII). AngII has been linked with a variety of different functions ranging from the initiation of severe vascular pathologies, such as atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), to mundane physiological processes of fluid homeostasis, vascular contraction, and regulation of blood pressure. To provide a potential link between these functions, an in-depth analysis of regional effects of AngII on aortic vasculature was performed.

The studies presented in this dissertation tested the overall hypothesis of whether regional changes exist in the vasculature …

Use Of Surface Geophysical Techniques To Locate A Karst Conduit In The Cane Run - Royal Spring Basin, Kentucky, Ganesh N. Tripathi Jan 2009

Use Of Surface Geophysical Techniques To Locate A Karst Conduit In The Cane Run - Royal Spring Basin, Kentucky, Ganesh N. Tripathi

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Groundwater flow in karst terrains is difficult to map because it can be concentrated through conduits that do not necessarily coincide with the surface features. We applied electrical resistivity (ER) and self-potential (SP) techniques at three sites to locate an inferred trunk conduit feeding a major spring in the Inner Bluegrass region of Kentucky. Royal Spring is the primary water supply for the city of Georgetown; the upper part of its basin coincides with the Cane Run watershed. ER and SP profiles were perpendicular to the inferred trunk conduit orientation. ER profiles (972 m total length) were measured using a …
