"Ordinary Talents And Extraordinary Perseverance": The Life Of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, David Bruce Jan 2009

"Ordinary Talents And Extraordinary Perseverance": The Life Of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, David Bruce

Dissertations (1934 -)

Born into a gentry family with roots in the Society of Friends, the evangelical social conscience of Thomas Fowell Buxton (1786-1845) was developed as he operated a brewery in Spitalfields, perhaps London's poorest parish. He was instrumental in raising funds for poor relief and establishing soup and bread kitchens there during the winter of 1816-1817. His interest and research on penal discipline brought him national prominence and led to a parliamentary seat which he held for nearly two decades. Buxton's association with noted activist William Wilberforce (1759-1833) led to his own involvement in the anti-slavery movement, a cause he fiercely …

The Primary Prevention Of Sexual Violence Against Adolescents In Racine County And The Community Readiness Model, Theresa A. Dewalt Jan 2009

The Primary Prevention Of Sexual Violence Against Adolescents In Racine County And The Community Readiness Model, Theresa A. Dewalt

Dissertations (1934 -)

Sexual violence affects tens of thousands of people annually in the United States. The majority of sexual assault victims are under the age of 18. Victims of sexual violence often experience severe, long-lasting ramifications, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, interpersonal problems, suicidal ideation, self-harm behaviors, and eating disorders. As a result of these effects, it is imperative that communities provide effective primary prevention of sexual violence programs. However, it is challenging to effectively implement sexual violence primary prevention strategies for a variety of reasons. One challenge is because it is difficult to construct a prevention program that changes the …

Effects Of Individual Secularity, Institutional Secularity And Campus Activity Involvement On College Student Suicidal Ideation And Attempts, Christopher Daood Jan 2009

Effects Of Individual Secularity, Institutional Secularity And Campus Activity Involvement On College Student Suicidal Ideation And Attempts, Christopher Daood

Dissertations (1934 -)

Using undergraduate data from a recent study on the Nature of College Student Suicidality, this paper explored the impact of campus activity involvement, individual secularity and institutional secularity as risk and/or protective factors for college student suicidal ideation and attempts. Results revealed that students who participated in at least one campus activity and students who affiliate with a Christian faith were less likely to seriously consider suicide in the last twelve months. Gender differences were found in the relationship between institutional secularity and serious consideration of suicide, with non-secular institutions serving as a protective factor for women, but not men. …

Learning Through Nature: Mount Holyoke Environmental Research And Education Center, Sari M. Lipnick Jan 2009

Learning Through Nature: Mount Holyoke Environmental Research And Education Center, Sari M. Lipnick

Architecture Theses and Projects

I plan on doing this by creating an area located along a river or body of water that people will be able to interact and learn from its ecosystem and wildlife. I would like this to be a space that allows for the public to come and learn either indoors or outdoors with a variety of tools. By creating two defined areas functioning as elementary learning and university learning it would allow the variety of participants to come into the space and even interact with each other. One goal of mine would be to explore this interaction and control it, …

Strabismal Existence, Jordan Dubreuil Jan 2009

Strabismal Existence, Jordan Dubreuil

Architecture Theses and Projects

This thesis experiments with small prefabricated living spaces to examine the notion of existence. How small can a space become before an individual must expand and how to channel that expansion through architecture using several types of structures. The first is a Self Sustaining Mobile Living Unit that provides freedom and enriches the basic needs for existence. The second is a Demountable Structure where people are provided tools for expanding themselves creatively. The third is an existing mill structure within a local artist community in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Bridging The Gap: A Symbiotic Approach, Nicholas Czarniecki Jan 2009

Bridging The Gap: A Symbiotic Approach, Nicholas Czarniecki

Architecture Theses and Projects

Some architectural themes to be explored in this project have to deal with sustainability, passive environment systems, the play between new and old, and public and private. These themes are important because of the obvious need for solutions for energy usage when it comes to building sustainably. The goal of the thesis is to creat a culture that is sustainable through the interaction of young and old people in a built environment.

Newport Aquarium Oceanic Research And Discovery Center: To Further Our Knowledge Of The Ocean, Steven R. Toohey

Architecture Theses and Projects

This project is to design an Aquarium building both for the public and for researchers. There will be connections to the ocean visibly for the public and physically by docks and piers for the researchers. The building needs to tie into the landscape visually and will be using as many sustainable techniques as possible to support the building. A building that teaches how to save and preserve this planet should help the cause by creating its own power.

Awakening Experience: Amish Youth And The Search For A Modern Identity, Nicole Secinaro

Architecture Theses and Projects

This Thesis investigates Amish Youth and the proposal of a center for modern identity development that facilitates the opportunities to to experience a new, worldly perspective during their only period of “choice”. My goal is to generate modern experiences through fundemental communication and mediation between Old Order Amish teenagers and modern amerricans during their Rumspringa. This center for development will enable the teens to retain a modern identity successfully until they make a decision to be baptized into the Amish community. I want to execute this primarily focusing on education for the amish teens. This center will also allow them …

Center For The Creation And Performance Of The Arts, Dennis P. Mcgowan Jan 2009

Center For The Creation And Performance Of The Arts, Dennis P. Mcgowan

Architecture Theses and Projects

The design is geared towards experience and interaction both in and outside the building, as well as the interaction with the city. The Project creates a place that wants to give back to the community. If the building and space is popular, it will attract people and make them want to become a part of the environment. For instance, after the center is constructed companies and businesses would be attracted to be part of the neighborhood because of the energy and activity that is generated by the building.

Movement Architecture: An Investigation Into The Manipulation Of Movement Through Form And Space, Rachel Hampton Jan 2009

Movement Architecture: An Investigation Into The Manipulation Of Movement Through Form And Space, Rachel Hampton

Architecture Theses and Projects

This project will investigate the effect of movement on one’s perception of space and their surroundings. Means by which movement can be altered, manipulated and designed in order to alter perceptions will be explored. These means will focus on architectural organizational strategies such as nesting, layering and revealing certain types and speeds of movements. These organizations will occur at various scales, but the main exploration will occur at the program and site level, and their associated movements. The differing motions of the project and urban site will be forced into architectural interactions and relationships with one another. This investigation will …

Interdisciplinary Project-Based Model For Enhanced Instruction Of Courses, Douglas Johansen, Claudia Scaff, Jace Hargis Jan 2009

Interdisciplinary Project-Based Model For Enhanced Instruction Of Courses, Douglas Johansen, Claudia Scaff, Jace Hargis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study examines ability of an interdisciplinary group project to develop student’s abilities to work successfully in groups in a creative context. Group dynamics were investigated via interaction effects between students in a Graphic Design and Marketing class project. A repeated measures survey technique was used to assess student’s perceptions of group projects and their attributes. As a result of the project, student perceptions concerning the importance of creative contributions, as well as group participation factors became more positive, demonstrating that interdisciplinary group projects with students in a creative discipline offer business students a unique “outside the box” learning opportunity.

Reclaiming Koreatown: A Prescription For Current And Future Needs Of Koreatown Residents, Edward J.W. Park, Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance

Asian and Asian American Studies Faculty Works

This report presents current and future needs of neighborhood residents and analyzes the challenges facing the multi-ethnic, low-income Koreatown community in Los Angeles. For the thousands of low-income residents of Los Angeles's Koreatown, the economic hardships brought on by the recent subprime mortgage housing and financial crises are not new. In the words of a Koreatown resident, "....the housing 'crisis' has been a crisis for us for a long time." Well before the current recession, Koreatown residents were complaining of increased housing costs due to the influx of upscale luxury housing units that replaced affordable housing units. The 2008 financial …

The Distribution Of Beneficial Mutations And Their Pleiotropic Effects, Sarah Gaffney Wrocklage Jan 2009

The Distribution Of Beneficial Mutations And Their Pleiotropic Effects, Sarah Gaffney Wrocklage

Master's Theses and Capstones

Understanding the distribution of beneficial mutations is relevant to the understanding of virtually all aspects of the adaptive process. Data describing this distribution are limited, but even less well understood are the pleiotropic effects of adaptive mutations. Yet, the pleiotropy of beneficial mutations may play a role in numerous biological processes. In this thesis, we address this problem by measuring the distribution of beneficial mutations and their pleiotropic effects using mutants of Burkholderia cenocepacia and Escherichia coli. The fitness of each mutant was measured relative to its progenitor in several novel environments. We found that the effects of beneficial mutations …

Genetic Over-Expression Of Cytokeratin 18 In Bovine Luteal Cells: Effects On Intermediate Filament Formation And Fas Ligand-Induced Apoptosis, Jennifer J. Forcina Jan 2009

Genetic Over-Expression Of Cytokeratin 18 In Bovine Luteal Cells: Effects On Intermediate Filament Formation And Fas Ligand-Induced Apoptosis, Jennifer J. Forcina

Master's Theses and Capstones

The receptor Fas and its ligand, FasL, are implicated in apoptosis of luteal cells during regression of the corpus luteum (CL). In some cell types, cytokeratin (CK) 8/18 filaments impair FasL-induced apoptosis. Here, we determined if genetic over-expression of CK18 filaments in luteal cells similarly prevents FasL-induced apoptosis. Luteal cell cultures were prepared from early and late stage bovine CL (day 5 and days 16-18 post-ovulation, respectively). The cells were transduced with media, mock vector containing GFP, or a CK18-containing vector, and then exposed to a cytokine cocktail containing FasL for 24 hours. Transduction of luteal cells with CK18 vector …

The Good Of The Intellect, Eric Perl Jan 2009

The Good Of The Intellect, Eric Perl

Philosophy Faculty Works

Recent continental philosophy often seeks to retrieve Neoplatonic transcendence, or the Good, while ignoring the place of intellect in classical and medieval Neoplatonism. Instead, it attempts to articulate an encounter with radical transcendence in the immediacy of temporality, individuality, and affectivity. On the assumption that there is no intellectual intuition (Kant), intellectual consciousness is reduced to ratiocination and is taken to be “poor in intuition” (Marion). In this context, the present paper expounds Plotinus’ phenomenology of intellectual experience to show how intellect, for Plotinus, is rather the richest mode of intuition, coinciding with the intelligible content of reality. This content, …
