Instructing For Fluency In The First Grade, Kim Vierkant Jan 2009

Instructing For Fluency In The First Grade, Kim Vierkant

Graduate Research Papers

This literature review inquired as to how fluency relates to comprehension, what sub-skills are necessary to ensure the development of a fluent reader, and what the top two fluency intervention programs available were according to the What Works Clearinghouse. The author of this literature review used peer-reviewed literature, personal communications, and observations from her first grade classroom to come to the conclusion that beginning readers' fluency led to comprehension. But, when readers have a command over accuracy and fluency then comprehension and fluency were reciprocal skills. The author of this literature review goes on to depict the sub-skills needed to …

Postpartum Depression And Universal Screening: Consequences, Benefits, And Barriers, Jennifer Setzer Trumbull Jan 2009

Postpartum Depression And Universal Screening: Consequences, Benefits, And Barriers, Jennifer Setzer Trumbull

Graduate Research Papers

In the United States our society has a perception that after a mother has given birth she should be overjoyed and the happiest she has ever been in her life as well as in love with her baby the instant the first breath is taken. As all parents know, having a child is a stressful, life-changing event (Brewer, 2001). No one wants to believe a mother is not happy or may be unable to care for the new baby much, less that she might be able to harm the child (Brewer, 2001). Unfortunately, the reality is many women suffer from …

A Portrayal Of The Modern Day Dairy Farm In Children's Literature, Bridget Donlon Jan 2009

A Portrayal Of The Modern Day Dairy Farm In Children's Literature, Bridget Donlon

Graduate Research Papers

Children's books may be the only views of farming urban students experience, yet books depicting farms with one or two cows are outdated. There is a lack of information available for children to learn about modem dairy farming practices. The dairy industry has experienced substantial changes in its history, including the introduction of many technologies. Modem dairy farms have incorporated technologies into everyday tasks, yet few children's books show farmers working at computers or even milking machines. At a time when most families are removed from farming, students create understanding of dairy farming through secondary sources such as children's literature. …

Study Abroad: Products, Practices, And Perspectives Of A New Culture, Molly Marie Juza

Honors Program Theses

How does one adapt him/herself to an environment that is so different in almost every way? Noticing exactly how one is forming their gestures and body movements so as not to offend anyone, modifying one’s point-of-view on issues that seem so straightforward like cutting in line, and realizing that even facial expressions are partially culturally determined are among countless other topics within the situations that sojourners voluntarily place themselves for months at a time. How do they adapt to these strange new situations? What are some of the difficulties in adapting? What aspects of their home culture do they maintain? …

Generalised Fourier Transform And Perturbations To Soliton Equations, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2009

Generalised Fourier Transform And Perturbations To Soliton Equations, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

A brief survey of the theory of soliton perturbations is presented. The focus is on the usefulness of the so-called Generalised Fourier Transform (GFT). This is a method that involves expansions over the complete basis of “squared solutions” of the spectral problem, associated to the soliton equation. The Inverse Scattering Transform for the corresponding hierarchy of soliton equations can be viewed as a GFT where the expansions of the solutions have generalised Fourier coefficients given by the scattering data. The GFT provides a natural setting for the analysis of small perturbations to an integrable equation: starting from a purely soliton …

The Changing Face Of The U.S. Military: A Textual Analysis Of U.S. Army And U.S. Navy Recruiting Advertisements From Pre-9-11 To Six Years Into The Iraq War, Maryann M. Rowland

LSU Master's Theses

In 2009, six years after the initial invasion of Iraq, the attraction of the "War on Terrorism" and the intense patriotism has faded. As a result, the military has watched the numbers of new enlistees steadily drop. The present study investigates whether the United States military has adapted its recruitment strategies in television advertisements to change its public image in the wake of the increasing unpopularity of the Iraq War and disillusionment with U.S. military operations in the broader "War on Terrorism." A textual analysis of U.S. Army and U.S. Navy recruiting advertisements that aired on national cable television during …

The Relative Effect Of Alternative Regulatory Actions: Benchmarks For The Compliance And Discipline Process In Different Jurisdictions And Occupations, Robert J. Mcatee

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The compliance processes of many regulatory agencies have recently come under close scrutiny. The media have portrayed the compliance and discipline processes of many regulatory agencies as being inefficient and not timely in many instances. The Council of Licensure, Enforcement, and Regulation (CLEAR) intends to assist regulatory agencies to do their work in a more efficient and timely manner by providing them with adequate and helpful information.

In the spirit of CLEAR’s mission, a collaborative effort was embarked upon by CLEAR staff and leadership, professionals with experience in the compliance and discipline process along with myself to produce a survey …

The aim of this study was to identify the different species of insects from the Reduviidae and Pentatomidae families as well as each species’ abundance in three ecological niches (forest, forest edge, and farm land). The study was conducted in six communities of Los Yungas, La Paz (Carmen Pampa, San Pablo, San Juan de la Miel, Altuspata, Choro Alto, and Choro). In each community, three Malaise traps were installed in the three ecological niches (forest, forest edge, and farm …

Unaccountable? The United Nations, Emergency Powers, And The Rule Of Law, Simon Chesterman Jan 2009

Unaccountable? The United Nations, Emergency Powers, And The Rule Of Law, Simon Chesterman

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

For a body committed to the rule of law in theory, the applicability of the rule of law to the United Nations in practice remains oddly unclear. This Article will not consider the personal responsibility of UN officials, who generally enjoy personal or functional immunity from legal process in the territories where they work. Rather the focus of this Article is on the quasi-constitutional question of the liability of the organization itself. As the United Nations has assumed more state-like functions-in particular through the coercive activities of its Security Council--the question of what limits exist on the powers thus exercised …
