Georgia Library Quarterly

The article presents information on areas where the library board of trustees may have a direct role in the construction of a public library in the U.S. It notes that board members are as necessary to the design and construction of a library as are the library director, administration staff, the architect, interior design professional, general contractor and project manager of the construction project. The board is expected to conduct a Facilities Master Plan study for the library system before seeking funding for any project. It also enumerates the responsibilities the library board members must approve during the entire construction …

Library Technology Center Debuts At North Georgia College, Shawn C. Tonner

Georgia Library Quarterly

The article reports on the opening of the Library Technology Center at North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega to crowds of students, faculty, staff and community members on August 19, 2008. A brief overview is given on the history, graduate programs, and student population of the university. The college library needed more and better seating and public computing, library instruction spaces and collection space. These factors, combined with limited Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility and inadequate electrical, lighting and life-safety systems, created a compelling case for a library building project.

Dangerously Sidestepping The Fourth Amendment: How Courts Are Allowing Third-Party Consent To Bypass Warrants For Searching Password-Protected Computer, David D. Thomas Jan 2009

Dangerously Sidestepping The Fourth Amendment: How Courts Are Allowing Third-Party Consent To Bypass Warrants For Searching Password-Protected Computer, David D. Thomas

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note sets forth that it is unacceptable for law enforcement to ignore the presence of passwords simply because they may not be immediately visible. Furthermore, it is contrary to the Fourth Amendment for law enforcement to rely on third parties who grant access to search the data without knowledge of the password to unlock the data. Principles hammered out over time for searches and seizures of physically locked objects can easily be transposed and extended to fit the virtual world while still providing people the protections of the Fourth Amendment.

Improved Frequency Domain Channel Estimation And Equalization For Mimo Wireless Communications, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Jan 2009

Improved Frequency Domain Channel Estimation And Equalization For Mimo Wireless Communications, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces an improved frequency domain channel estimation method based on interpolation vectors for single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) with the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scheme. the proposed algorithm is derived by employing the least squares (LS) criterion, and a specified application for the wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) Rayleigh fading channel is presented. the channel frequency domain responses estimated at two adjacent pilot blocks are used to track the time-variant channel information, which can effectively improve the accuracy of channel estimation without significantly increasing complexity. Maximum mean square error (MMSE) frequency domain equalization based on the estimated …

Estimating Hydraulic Conductivity From Drainage Patterns Derived From Dem-A Case Study In The Oregon Cascades, B. P. Grudzinski, W. Luo, Darryll T. Pederson Jan 2009

Estimating Hydraulic Conductivity From Drainage Patterns Derived From Dem-A Case Study In The Oregon Cascades, B. P. Grudzinski, W. Luo, Darryll T. Pederson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Hydraulic conductivity is an important parameter in hydrology which describes the ease with which water moves through porous media. This parameter is also important in understanding the hydrology of Mars. On Earth, this parameter can be measured by conducting controlled experiments in laboratories or conducting pumping tests in the field. This study introduces a new method of estimating hydraulic conductivity from drainage dissection pattern derived from digital elevation model (DEM). This method can be applied to Mars if it is robustly tested on Earth.

The Completion Of Advanced Placement Courses As An Indicator Of Academic Success In First-Year College Students, Sean Michael Preston Jan 2009

The Completion Of Advanced Placement Courses As An Indicator Of Academic Success In First-Year College Students, Sean Michael Preston

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if Advanced Placement (AP) courses were an indicator of academic success in first-year college freshmen. A quantitative analysis of a twenty-one question survey was conducted in order to understand how AP classes create a successful high school graduate for the academic rigors of a postsecondary institution. The survey was administered to one-hundred first-year college freshmen at a large suburban state university in Georgia. The results of the quantitative survey yielded information in support of the research hypothesis and rejected the null hypothesis. The researcher was mindful of threats to both internal and …

Looking East: Muslim Identity In The Archaeological Record Of American Enslavement, Kacie Allen Jan 2009

Looking East: Muslim Identity In The Archaeological Record Of American Enslavement, Kacie Allen

Theses & ETDs

A significant number of those Africans enslaved in the Americas were Muslim. Archaeological investigation has yet to be made concerning their story. This thesis explores the archaeology of Islam to provide a foundation for understanding the materiality of Muslim identity as it appears in the context of American enslavement, and the historical circumstances which resulted in significant numbers of African Muslims becoming enslaved in the Americas. Drawing on the documentary record, it relates a selection of the life stories of enslaved African American Muslims. In pursuit of a critical, explanatory, and emancipatory archaeology, an examination of artifacts recovered from contexts …

Hemangiomas Of Infancy: Mesenchymal Stem Cell Tumors Of Perivascular Origin, Christopher Spock Jan 2009

Hemangiomas Of Infancy: Mesenchymal Stem Cell Tumors Of Perivascular Origin, Christopher Spock

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Introduction: Hemangiomas of infancy (HOI) are the most common benign tumor of childhood. Initially thought to be composed entirely of endothelial cells, it has recently been shown that mesenchymal stem cells reside within these tumors. We propose that hemangiomas represent mesenchymal stem cell tumors of pericyte origin, as demonstrated by expression of pericytic markers (NG2, PDGFR-β, and DLK), neural crest origin (expression of nestin and sox10), expression of factors that play a role in the maintenance of stem cell pluripotency (Oct4, Sox2, Nanog, C-myc, and piRNAs), and a microRNA expression profile suggestive of mesenchymal stem cells. Methods: Quantitative RT-PCR was …

Are The World's Oceans Optically Different?, Mimi Szeto Jan 2009

Are The World's Oceans Optically Different?, Mimi Szeto

Master's Theses and Capstones

With satellite technology, the dynamics of oceanic photosynthesis can be analyzed on a global scale using remotely sensed estimates of chlorophyll concentration. Such work is dependent on the performance of empirical ocean color algorithms that produce the chlorophyll estimates. In hopes to understand the sources of algorithm uncertainty, the NASA bio-Optical Marine Algorithm Data set (NOMAD) was analyzed. The OC4v.4 algorithm estimates were compared to NOMAD's in situ measurements, and a bias was apparent when the data were sorted by ocean (Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern). Several instrumental artifacts were found to be insignificant to the oceanic algorithm bias. Using a …

Conflict Resolution And Community Support For Conservation In The Northern Forest: A Comparative Case Study From Maine, Morgan A. Cottle Jan 2009

Conflict Resolution And Community Support For Conservation In The Northern Forest: A Comparative Case Study From Maine, Morgan A. Cottle

Master's Theses and Capstones

Rapid land ownership changes in the Northern Forest have spurred development as well as conservation. Local people have experienced differing degrees of participation in land use decisions. I compared two conservation projects from Maine to assess the policy processes, and local attitudes about the conservation project and land use. One was a top-down approach, the second a grassroots, private effort by local citizens to conserve forest land. I gathered my data via in person interviews, mail surveys, and analysis of legislative testimony.

My findings indicate that early local involvement leads to less conflict and greater acceptance of the project. Important …

Neo-Conservatism And Foreign Policy, Ted Boettner Jan 2009

Neo-Conservatism And Foreign Policy, Ted Boettner

Master's Theses and Capstones

Since the 1960s, neo-conservatives advanced their agenda through journals, think tanks, coalitions, and by serving as high-level government officials. While scholars have noted this influence, there's little written on how neo-conservative ideas have evolved and influenced foreign policy under these changing historical circumstances. Moreover, very little scholarship foils neo-conservatism against the two dominant approaches to foreign policy in the 20th century---realism and liberalism---to discover how they are held together as a group. This thesis finds that neo-conservatism is a political ideology of American foreign policy that has developed several common tendencies over the last forty years. These include an ardent …

John Robinson: The Man They Would Not Let Us Forget, Kathleen C. Beliveau Jan 2009

John Robinson: The Man They Would Not Let Us Forget, Kathleen C. Beliveau

Master's Theses and Capstones

Very little is known of John Robinson. This paper endeavors to partially remedy this problem. In order to attempt such a significant project a variety of works were consulted.

While there is very little information about Robinson's first eighteen years, we can piece together insight from the times in which he lived. Further clues come from his own writings while the reminiscences of those who knew him offer additional insight.

Secondary writings include authors such as the late O.S. Davis, William Wallace Fenn, and Perry Miller. Contemporary authors encompass Stephen Brachlow, Timothy George, and Keith Sprunger. A few pictures have …

Reproductive Health
