Values Of Females And Males In The East And West: Are They Similar Or Different?, Edward Francis Murphy, Regina A. Greenwood, Arnel Onesimo Uy
HCBE Faculty Presentations
Understanding whether cross-cultural values are similar or different has become more important in an increasingly global marketplace. Yet, few studies have explored cross-cultural sex–based value structures. This study examines the values of 5,134 male and female working adults in three Eastern nations (Japan, Philippines, and Thailand) and three Western nations (United States, United Kingdom, and Iceland). For similarities, males and females more highly valued personal than social terminal values. For differences, males in the East more highly valued self-actualization/competence instrumental values. Females in both geographic groups placed higher importance on social terminal values than did males, supporting prior research.

A Dimensionless Number Describing The Effects Of Recharge And Geometry On Discharge From Simple Karstic Aquifers, M. D. Covington, C. M. Wicks, M. O. Saar
KIP Articles
The responses of karstic aquifers to storms are often used to obtain information about aquifer geometry. In general, spring hydrographs are a function of both system geometry and recharge. However, the majority of prior work on storm pulses through karst has not studied the effect of recharge on spring hydrographs. To examine the relative importance of geometry and recharge, we break karstic aquifers into elements according to the manner of their response to transient flow and demonstrate that each element has a characteristic response timescale. These fundamental elements are full pipes, open channels, reservoir/constrictions, and the porous matrix. Taking the …

Portrayal Of Characters With Disabilities In Newbery Books, Melissa Leininger
Portrayal Of Characters With Disabilities In Newbery Books, Melissa Leininger
Theses and Dissertations
Newbery books represent quality literature that is likely to be used for bibliotherapy, yet these books have not been systematically evaluated for their portrayal of characters with disabilities. Thirty Newbery Award and Honor books from 1975–2008 were identified that contained 40 characters with disabilities. These books were evaluated using a rating scale that combines literary standards and standards relating to individuals with disabilities. The types of disabilities and personal characteristics such as gender, age, and race were documented and the personal portrayal of characters with disabilities and exemplary practices in these books were evaluated.
