Second Language Acquisition Of The Spanish Tap And Trill In A Contact Learning Environment, Andrew M. Weech Nov 2009

Second Language Acquisition Of The Spanish Tap And Trill In A Contact Learning Environment, Andrew M. Weech

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to study whether target-like articulation of the Spanish tap [ɾ] and trill [r] is achieved by second language learners who have lived in a Spanish-speaking environment for an extensive period of time. The subjects of this study were students at Brigham Young University (BYU) who had spent 18 months to two years in a Spanish-speaking country. Most of the subjects had little to no previous Spanish instruction, but rather learned the language primarily through their contact with native speakers while abroad. In addition to whether or not subjects achieved target-like pronunciation of these two …

Ultrafast Vibrational Spectroscopy Of A Degenerate Mode Of Guanidinium Chloride, Dmitriy Yu Vorobyev, Chun Hung Kuo, Jian Xin Chen, Daniel G. Kuroda, J. Nathan Scott, Jane M. Vanderkooi, Robin M. Hochstrasser Nov 2009

Ultrafast Vibrational Spectroscopy Of A Degenerate Mode Of Guanidinium Chloride, Dmitriy Yu Vorobyev, Chun Hung Kuo, Jian Xin Chen, Daniel G. Kuroda, J. Nathan Scott, Jane M. Vanderkooi, Robin M. Hochstrasser

Faculty Publications

Nearly degenerate asymmetric stretches with perpendicular transition dipóle moments of the deuterated guanidinium cation (DGdm-) in D2O and D-glycerol/D2O mixtures at 1600 cm-1 were investigated by linear FTIR spectroscopy and polarization dependent femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The vibrational coupling of the asymmetric stretches of guanidinium occurs within 0.5 ps and leads to fast decay of the anisotropy to a level of 0.1. A systematic study of the influence of the coherence transfer on pump-probe signals is given. Following this decay, the anisotropy decays with a time constant of 4.1 ps in D2O by rotational diffusion about an axis perpendicular to the …

Defining The Role Of Citizens In Dialogic Environmental Risk Communication, Holly Lynn Anderson Nov 2009

Defining The Role Of Citizens In Dialogic Environmental Risk Communication, Holly Lynn Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Risk communication has evolved into an interdisciplinary study involving the work of communication specialists, psychologists, attorneys, and rhetoricians. Of particular interest has been the interaction between government and citizens in environmental risk communication. This interaction has been characterized by citizen outrage in response to dictatorial governmental decision-making. In response, researchers have called for true two-way dialogue between government and the public. This project addressses risk communication during the permitting of hazardous waste management facilities under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, identifying the failure to implement two-way dialogue. The project addresses two concerns: (1) the impact of existing legal barriers, …

Developing And Studying The Effectiveness Of Efr Annotations For Chinese Language Learners, Amber Marie Chen Nov 2009

Developing And Studying The Effectiveness Of Efr Annotations For Chinese Language Learners, Amber Marie Chen

Theses and Dissertations

This project is intended to take the film To Live, directed by Zhang Yimou, and apply the Electronic Film Review (EFR) approach to it in a Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) setting. The Electronic Film Review project, developed by Alan K. Melby, is aimed at providing a superior language learning experience for Americans learning Chinese. Using feature films as a teaching tool has been found to stimulate and motivate students to achieve higher language levels, but in order for optimal learning to occur the material must be challenging yet accessible to the student. Most feature films, by themselves, …

Revisiting The Desert Sublime: Billy's Ecotheological Journey In Cormac Mccarthy's The Crossing, Michael J. Riding Nov 2009

Revisiting The Desert Sublime: Billy's Ecotheological Journey In Cormac Mccarthy's The Crossing, Michael J. Riding

Theses and Dissertations

While McCarthy studies have emphasized elements of the sacred in his writing, this thesis adds a new historical perspective and synthesis to reading paradigms of Cormac McCarthy. The Crossing combines the patterns of the ancient pre-Hebraic genre of the desert sublime with the basic formula of the American Western genre to interrogate McCarthy's question of whether in the postmodern moment one can still divest oneself in the desert and find access to the sublime. In an era of an invisible or absent God where post-humanist thought erases the anthropocentric supremacy of human over animal and the earth itself, the one …

Growth And Geodesics Of Thompson's Group F, Jennifer L. Schofield Nov 2009

Growth And Geodesics Of Thompson's Group F, Jennifer L. Schofield

Theses and Dissertations

In this paper our goal is to describe how to find the growth of Thompson's group F with generators a and b. Also, by studying elements through pipe systems, we describe how adding a third generator c affects geodesic length. We model the growth of Thompson's group F by producing a grammar for reduced pairs of trees based on Blake Fordham's tree structure. Then we change this grammar into a system of equations that describes the growth of Thompson's group F and simplify. To complete our second goal, we present and discuss a computer program that has led to some …

Patents And Green Technology, New York Law School Nov 2009

Patents And Green Technology, New York Law School

Institute for Information Law and Policy at NYLS (Event Posters)

Thursday, November 19, 2009

The need to be “green” is everywhere; from the market to the media, the technology used to promote environmental efficiency has gained international popularity. The green movement is mainstream, as the public has become inundated with advertisements full of hybrid or energy efficient products ranging from cars to light bulbs. But like any other new technology, these inventions also deserve the exclusive rights granted to inventors under patent law. The new administration has brought attention to this field by calling for greater developments in the areas of green energy and other environmental protections. It is evident …
