Exploring The Efficiency And Effectiveness Of Teacher Selection Tools: The Effects On The Total Group With A Focus On The Experience Sub-Groups, Kimberly Joyce Mckinley Dec 2009

Exploring The Efficiency And Effectiveness Of Teacher Selection Tools: The Effects On The Total Group With A Focus On The Experience Sub-Groups, Kimberly Joyce Mckinley

Dissertations

As schools struggle to meet federal testing requirements, the importance of having highly effective teachers in every classroom has never been greater, and, given the downward trend in the economy, there are more teaching applicants than ever. School districts would benefit from a streamlined process to interview and select only the most effective and highly-qualified teachers. The researcher’s purpose was to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of a unique and specific teacher selection process which included three Ventures for Excellence screening tools and one innovative instrument designed for this study, the performance rating scale. A collaborative correlational study involving three …

The Ranking Of Football Teams Using Concepts From The Analytic Hierarchy Process., Yepeng Sun 1976- Dec 2009

The Ranking Of Football Teams Using Concepts From The Analytic Hierarchy Process., Yepeng Sun 1976-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A new method to rank football teams with the concepts associated with the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) and Graph theory is developed in this thesis. A set of games is interpreted as a graph, in which every vertex represents a team, and every edge represents a team quality comparison evaluated directly from the score difference of a game. A weighted quality comparison value between every two teams is computed from the graph, based on the transitivity relationship of comparison values in the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). All the quality comparison values are input into the software package Expert Choice as the …

Risk Management And Assessment Of Upgrading And Standardizing Guardrail, Karen Zhu, Shuo Li Dec 2009

Risk Management And Assessment Of Upgrading And Standardizing Guardrail, Karen Zhu, Shuo Li

JTRP Technical Reports

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has installed guardrail systems on interstate highways and other highways in accordance with a variety of standards throughout the years. Traffic volume has increased and the posted speeds have been raised on most INDOT’s interstate highways. Consequently, the characteristics of run-off-the-road (ROR) crashes may have changed. In the meantime, material prices have increased considerably and the guardrail maintenance and crash repair costs have increased accordingly. There is no doubt all these changes will not only greatly affect the ROR crash prediction, but also greatly affect the guardrail benefit/cost analysis. This study examined the current …

Adams's Quest For The Unity Of Knowledge, Karl Shaddox Dec 2009

Adams's Quest For The Unity Of Knowledge, Karl Shaddox

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In "Adams's Quest for the Unity of Knowledge," Karl Shaddox discusses Henry Adams's lesser known work, The Degradation of the Democratic Dogma, as a continuation of the historian's attempt at unifying knowledge in The Education. Whereas unification in The Education was proposed by historicizing force, whether religious or molecular, Adams's effort in The Degradation employed a scientistic approach to history. Using Josiah Gibb's research on the equilibrium of heterogeneous substances, Adams felt he had provided a natural explanation of social and historical change — and thus the elemental connection between matter and mind. Critical opinion has not been receptive to …

Press The Cancel Button! A Performance Evaluation Of Scalable In-Network Data Aggregation, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh Dec 2009

Press The Cancel Button! A Performance Evaluation Of Scalable In-Network Data Aggregation, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We perform real-world tests of the performance of medium access control protocol schemes for scalable data aggregation in sensor networks. Specifically, we evaluate the performance of a Listen-and-Suppress Carrier Sense Multiple Access (LAS-CSMA) scheme on the duplicate-insensitive exemplary monotonic aggregates MAX and MIN. These schemes reduce power consumption, network bandwidth usage and delays by suppressing node packet transmissions that are proven to be unnecessary in the query response. This is possible when nodes listen to the transmissions of other nodes as they respond.

Scalability tests were performed for 8 networks of various sizes, the largest having 24 Crossbow IRIS wireless …

Neon Allegiance, Jason Paul Olsen Dec 2009

Neon Allegiance, Jason Paul Olsen

Dissertations

This collection of thirty-one poems is built around my personal search for place, the idea of "home," and how it is relationship more than mere geography that defines the places one encounters in a life. In these poems, that idea of "home" ties back to intimate relationships with family and friends, but also with relationships involving culture—both historical and popular—as a whole.

The collection itself is a pastiche of strategies and stylizations, united by a defined and consistent voice. The geographic locations vary—from Las Vegas (where the largest number of poems and energy are focused) to stops in points across …

Metaevaluation Of Hiv/Aids Prevention Intervention Evaluations In Sub Saharan Africa With A Specific Emphasis On Implications For Women And Girls, Tererai Mafukidze Trent Dec 2009

Metaevaluation Of Hiv/Aids Prevention Intervention Evaluations In Sub Saharan Africa With A Specific Emphasis On Implications For Women And Girls, Tererai Mafukidze Trent

Dissertations

Despite numerous attempts by international agencies to halt the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), nowhere has the impact of HIV/AIDS been felt more acutely than among women and girls in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). SSA women account for 59% of adults over the age of 15 living with HIV/AIDS and 76% of those 15-24 who are infected (United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS [UNAIDS], 2007).

The evidence on gender disparities in infection rates is indisputable; there is an urgent need to identify what is missing in HIV/AIDS prevention interventions: What is the evidence based upon …

Electrical Switching Properties Of Ternary And Layered Chalcogenide Phase-Change Memory Devices, Martin Jared Barclay Dec 2009

Electrical Switching Properties Of Ternary And Layered Chalcogenide Phase-Change Memory Devices, Martin Jared Barclay

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Due to the increasing demand for products which use Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) and the near realization of the scaling limits of Flash [1, 2], a large research effort is underway. This effort is to develop new forms of NVM capable of replacing Flash [3]. At the forefront of this research is Phase-Change Random Access Memory (PCRAM). Chalcogenide based PCRAM is one of the most promising non-volatile memories for the next generation of portable electronics, due to its excellent scalability, large sensing margin, fast switching speed, and possible multi-bit per cell operation [3]. It is desirable for a phase-change random access …

A Parallel Computing Test Bed For Performing An Unsupervised Fluoroscopic Analysis Of Knee Joint Kinematics, Renu Ramanatha Dec 2009

A Parallel Computing Test Bed For Performing An Unsupervised Fluoroscopic Analysis Of Knee Joint Kinematics, Renu Ramanatha

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Fluoroscopic analysis of knee joint kinematics involves accurately determining the position and orientation of bones in the knee joint. This data can be derived using the static 3-D CT scan images and 2-D video fluoroscopy images together. This involves generating hypothetical digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRR) from the CT scan image with known position and orientation and comparing them to the original fluoroscopic frame. This represents a search problem in which, among all the DRRs possible from a CT image, the image that most closely matches the target fluoroscopy frame of the knee joint has to be found.

Each image in …

Size distribution analysis is conducted for each size fraction of the above eight samples to evaluation the effectiveness of spiral separation. Wet sieving method was used for size distribution analysis.;From the tests, the following conclusion can be drawn: (1) The fine spiral is able to recovery 65.5% of the deslime hydrocyclone underflow as clean coal with an ash content …

Living In The Spectrum: Autistic Children Center, Jennifer Villegas Dec 2009

Living In The Spectrum: Autistic Children Center, Jennifer Villegas

Architecture Theses and Projects

Throughout this project, I became aware of how the life of an autistic child differs from others. They view the world around them as something new and exciting. The goal was to create an environment to help children with autism and make them comfortable within their daily lifestyle. I used architecture to construct a realm in which these students could explore an environment which benefited their development.

Self-Realizing Inventions And The Utilitarian Foundation Of Patent Law, Alan Devlin, Neel Sukhatme Dec 2009

Self-Realizing Inventions And The Utilitarian Foundation Of Patent Law, Alan Devlin, Neel Sukhatme

William & Mary Law Review

Unlike other forms of intellectual property, patents are universally justified on utilitarian grounds alone. Valuable inventions and discoveries, bearing the characteristics of public goods, are easily appropriated by third parties. Because much technological innovation occurs pursuant to significant expenditures—both in terms of upfront research and subsequent commercialization costs—inventors must be permitted to extract at least part of the social gain associated with their technological contributions. Absent some form of proprietary control or alternative reward system, economics predicts that suboptimal capital will be devoted to the innovative process. This widely accepted principle comes with an important corollary: namely, that canons of …

Four-Body Model For Transfer Excitation, Allison L. Harris, Jerry Peacher, Don H. Madison, James Colgan Dec 2009

Four-Body Model For Transfer Excitation, Allison L. Harris, Jerry Peacher, Don H. Madison, James Colgan

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present here a four-body model for transfer-excitation collisions, which we call the four-body transfer-excitation (4BTE) model. Each two-body interaction is explicitly included in the 4BTE model, allowing us to study the effects of individual two-body interactions. We apply our model to fully differential cross sections for proton+helium collisions, and study the effect of the incident projectile-atom interaction, the scattered projectile-ion interaction, the projectile-nuclear interaction, and electron correlation within the target atom.

A Spoofing Attack Against An Epc Class One Rfid System, Christopher Bolan Dec 2009

A Spoofing Attack Against An Epc Class One Rfid System, Christopher Bolan

Australian Information Security Management Conference

In computing the term spoofing historically referred to the creation of TCP/IP packets using another device’s valid IP address to gain an advantage. The Electronic Product Code (EPC) RFID system was investigated to test the efficacy of spoofing a valid tag response to basic requests. A radio frequency transmission device was constructed to determine whether a valid reader could distinguish between the response of an actual tag and a spoofed response. The results show that the device was able to successfully deceive the EPC reader and further, to replace actual tag responses with a spoofed response. The potential for such …
