Shrinkage Estimation Of Expression Fold Change As An Alternative To Testing Hypotheses Of Equivalent Expression, Zahra Montazeri, Corey M. Yanofsky, David R. Bickel
Shrinkage Estimation Of Expression Fold Change As An Alternative To Testing Hypotheses Of Equivalent Expression, Zahra Montazeri, Corey M. Yanofsky, David R. Bickel
COBRA Preprint Series
Research on analyzing microarray data has focused on the problem of identifying differentially expressed genes to the neglect of the problem of how to integrate evidence that a gene is differentially expressed with information on the extent of its differential expression. Consequently, researchers currently prioritize genes for further study either on the basis of volcano plots or, more commonly, according to simple estimates of the fold change after filtering the genes with an arbitrary statistical significance threshold. While the subjective and informal nature of the former practice precludes quantification of its reliability, the latter practice is equivalent to using a …

Analogue Hawking Radiation In A Dc-Squid Array Transmission Line, P D. Nation, M. P. Blencowe, A. J. Rimberg, E. Buks
Dartmouth Scholarship
We propose the use of a superconducting transmission line formed from an array of dc-SQUID’s for investigating analogue Hawking radiation. Biasing the array with a space-time varying flux modifies the propagation velocity of the transmission line, leading to an effective metric with an horizon. Being a fundamentally quantum mechanical device, this setup allows for investigations of quantum effects such as back-reaction and analogue space-time fluctuations on the Hawking process.

Geometry Of The Trachyte Mesa Intrusion, Henry Mountains, Utah: Implications For The Emplacement Of Small Melt Volumes Into The Upper Crust, Paul H. Wetmore, Charles B. Connor, Sarah E. Kruse, Sean Callihan, Geoffrey Pignotta, Ciprian Stremtan, Andrea Burke
Geology Faculty Publications
The Trachyte Mesa intrusion is one of several small satellite bodies to the larger intrusions of the Henry Mountains, Utah. Most previous studies have worked under the assumptions that Trachyte Mesa is blister shaped and intruded into flat and gently NW dipping strata. In this study we combine structural and geophysical data sets to constrain the structural geology of the host lithologies and the unmodified geometry of the intrusion. Trachyte Mesa intrudes a series of northeast trending upright and open folds formed within the Jurassic Entrada Formation. Truncation of these folds at the contact with the overlying Curtis/Summerville formations indicates …
Structure-Property Relations For Monotonic And Fatigue Loading Conditions For A Powder Metal Steel, Paul Galon Allison
Structure-Property Relations For Monotonic And Fatigue Loading Conditions For A Powder Metal Steel, Paul Galon Allison
Theses and Dissertations
Developing a multi-scale math-based model for powder metallurgy (PM) component design and performance prediction requires experimental calibration and validation. Monotonic tension, compression and torsion tests were performed at various porosity and temperatures to obtain the set of plasticity and damage constants required for model calibration. Uniaxial fatigue experiments were performed to determine the constants required for capturing the low cycle and high cycle fatigue characteristics of a PM steel. Tension tests on two different Bridgman notched specimens were undertaken to study the damage-triaxiality dependence for model validation. Validation of the model is further being performed by monotonic component testing using …
Using Random Projections For Dimensionality Reduction In Identifying Rogue Applications, Travis Levestis Atkison
Using Random Projections For Dimensionality Reduction In Identifying Rogue Applications, Travis Levestis Atkison
Theses and Dissertations
In general, the consumer must depend on others to provide their software solutions. However, this outsourcing of software development has caused it to become more and more abstract as to where the software is actually being developed and by whom, and it poses a potentially large security problem for the consumer as it opens up the possibility for rogue functionality to be injected into an application without the consumer’s knowledge or consent. This begs the question of ‘How do we know that the software we use can be trusted?’ or ‘How can we have assurance that the software we use …

Integration of active and passive source seismic data is employed in order to study the nature of the relationships between crustal seismicity and geologic structures in the southeastern (SE) Carpathian foreland of Romania and the possible connection with the Vrancea Seismogenic Zone (VSZ) of intermediatedepth seismicity, one of the most active earthquakeprone areas in Europe. Crustal epicenters and focal mechanisms are correlated with four deep industry seismic profiles, the reprocessed Danube and Carpathian Integrated Action on Process in the Lithosphere and Neotectonics (DACIA PLAN) profile and the Deep Reflection Acquisition Constraining Unusual Lithospheric Activity II and III (DRACULA) profiles in …
Workforce Gap Analysis Of A Rural Community College's Training And Local Business & Industry Needs, Delfina Acosta Wilson
Workforce Gap Analysis Of A Rural Community College's Training And Local Business & Industry Needs, Delfina Acosta Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
In Mississippi, the bulk of the responsibility to conduct workforce training falls on the community colleges. With the recent trends of large industry relocating overseas, layoffs, and plant closures, these challenges have become prevalent in rural America. Through the development and delivery of workforce programs to local business and industry, community colleges have made substantial contributions to the economic and community development of communities across the nation. The gap between well-paying jobs and unemployed, undereducated workers continues to be a problem. In order to prepare the supply of the unemployed/underemployed and to meet industry's demand, workforce and education systems need …
Ethnicity And Academic Achievement By Malaysian Eighth Grade Students, Hui Peng Liew
Ethnicity And Academic Achievement By Malaysian Eighth Grade Students, Hui Peng Liew
Theses and Dissertations
Malaysia’s preferential policies have reduced the educational attainment gap between ethnic groups. However, we know less about their effects on ethnic differences in academic achievement. With this point in mind, the overall goal of this study is to examine inter-ethnic differences in mathematics and science achievement based on the cohort of eighth grade (Form 2) Malaysian students who participated in the Third International Mathematics and Sciences Study Repeat Project (TIMMS-R). It sought to determine the extent to which theoretical propositions of the structural and cultural perspectives developed to explain achievement differences in the United States are applicable in Malaysia. Malaysia …
Infinite Semipositone Systems, Jinglong Ye
Infinite Semipositone Systems, Jinglong Ye
Theses and Dissertations
We study positive solutions to classes of nonlinear elliptic singular problems of the form: -Δpu = λ g(u) uα in Ω u = 0 on δΩ where Ω is a bounded domain in ℝN, N ≥ 1 with smooth boundary δΩ, &lambda¸ is a positive parameter, α ∈(0; 1), Δpu := div(⌊∇u⌋p-2 ∇u); p > 1 is the p-Laplacian operator, and g is a smooth function. Such elliptic problems naturally arise in the study of steady state reaction diffusion processes. In particular, we will be interested in the challenging new class of problems when g(0) < 0 (hence lims→0+g(s) sα = - ∞ which we refer to as infinite semipositone problems. Our focus is on existence results. We obtain results for the single equation case as well as to the case of systems. We use the method of sub-super solutions to prove our results. The results in this dissertation provide a solid foundation for the analysis of such infinite semipositone problems.

Axial Collapse Of Thin-Walled, Multi-Corner Single- And Multi-Cell Tubes, Ali Najafi
Axial Collapse Of Thin-Walled, Multi-Corner Single- And Multi-Cell Tubes, Ali Najafi
Theses and Dissertations
Nonlinear explicit finite element (FE) simulations are used to study the axial collapse behavior of multi-corner. single- and multi-cell crush tubes under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. It is shown that the higher hardening modulus and yield stress increases the crush force and its resulting energy absorption. Moreover, the multi-cell tubes are found to have complicated collapse modes because of the geometrical complexity of the corner region unlike single-cell tubes. it was also shown that the stress wave propagation has a significant effect on the formation of crush modes in the tubes without imperfections whereas this effect can be ignored …

Theses and Dissertations
As requirements related to vehicle fuel economy and emissions continue to increase, automakers are developing complex hybrid powertrain control systems to meet these requirements. With the increase in powertrain complexity and performance requirements of a hybrid vehicle, embedded control systems have become an integral part of these vehicles. A hybrid’s ability to recapture energy normally lost as heat during braking situations can account for an increase in efficiency of up to 28%. This study explores the use of a grade adaptive regeneration strategy for improving a hybrid vehicle’s energy recapture capability. The concept of the grade adaptive regeneration strategy was …
Distributed Simulation Of Power Systems Using Real Time Digital Simulator, Krishnanjan Gubba Ravikumar
Distributed Simulation Of Power Systems Using Real Time Digital Simulator, Krishnanjan Gubba Ravikumar
Theses and Dissertations
The simulation of power system behavior, especially transient behavior, helps us in the analysis and planning of various power systems. However, power systems are usually highly complex and geographically distributed. Therefore system partitioning can be used to allow for sharing resources in simulation. In this work, distributed simulations of power system models have been developed using an electromagnetic transient simulator, namely Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). The goal is to demonstrate and assess the feasibility of both non-real-time and real-time simulations using the RTDS in a geographically distributed scenario. Different protocols and options used in the communication between power systems …
Using Remote Sensing To Monitor Herbicide Injury And Biomass Of Waterhyacinth, Wilfredo Robles
Using Remote Sensing To Monitor Herbicide Injury And Biomass Of Waterhyacinth, Wilfredo Robles
Theses and Dissertations
Aquatic vegetation plays an important role in the ecological interactions and processes within a water body. However, the presence of the invasive exotic aquatic plant species, waterhyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms], negatively affects those interactions as well as interfering with water use for recreation and navigation. An implemented management plan for waterhyacinth control relies on the use of herbicides. Efficacy is commonly assessed using visual injury and control ratings as well as estimating biomass. The problem is that those approaches are labor intensive only assessing single points throughout the entire water body. Therefore, technology like remote sensing, which is the …

Analysis Of Multi-Attribute Multi-Unit Procurement Auctions And Capacity-Constrained Sequential Auctions, Zhuoxiu Zhang
Analysis Of Multi-Attribute Multi-Unit Procurement Auctions And Capacity-Constrained Sequential Auctions, Zhuoxiu Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines an iterative multi-attribute auction for multi-unit procurement in the first part. A multi-unit allocation problem that allows order split among suppliers is formulated to improve the market efficiency. Suppliers are allowed to provide discriminative prices over units based on their marginal costs. A mechanism called Iterative Multiple-attribute Multiple-unit Reverse Auction (IMMRA) is proposed based on the assumption of the modified myopic best-response strategies. Numerical experiment results show that the IMMRA achieves market efficiency in most instances. The inefficiency occurs occasionally on the special cases when cost structures are significantly different among suppliers. Numerical results also show that …
