Synorogenic Evolution Of Large-Scale Drainage Patterns: Isotope Paleohydrology Of Sequential Laramide Basins, Steven J. Davis, Hari T. Mix, Bettina A. Wiegand, Alan R. Carroll, C. Page Chamberlain Sep 2009

Synorogenic Evolution Of Large-Scale Drainage Patterns: Isotope Paleohydrology Of Sequential Laramide Basins, Steven J. Davis, Hari T. Mix, Bettina A. Wiegand, Alan R. Carroll, C. Page Chamberlain

Environmental Studies and Sciences

In the past decade, we and others have compiled an extensive dataset of O, C and Sr isotope stratigraphies from sedimentary basins throughout the Paleogene North American Cordillera. In this study, we present new results from the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado, which record the evolving hydrology of the Eocene Green River Lake system. We then place the new data in the context of the broader Cordilleran dataset and summarize implications for understanding the synorogenic evolution of large-scale drainage patterns. The combined data reflect (1) a period of throughgoing foreland rivers heading in the Sevier fold-and-thrust belt and flowing …

Toward Automating Requirements Satisfaction Assessment, E. Ashlee Holbrook, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar Sep 2009

Toward Automating Requirements Satisfaction Assessment, E. Ashlee Holbrook, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper introduces the automation of satisfaction assessment: the process of determining the satisfaction mapping of natural language textual requirements to natural language design elements. Satisfaction assessment is useful because it assists in discovering unsatisfied requirements early in the lifecycle when such issues can be corrected with lower cost and impact than later. We define the basic terms and concepts for this process and explore the feasibility of developing baseline methods for its automation. This paper describes the satisfaction assessment approach algorithmically and then evaluates the effectiveness of two proposed information retrieval (IR) methods in two industrial studies - one …

Assessing Problem-Solving Dispositions: Likelihood-To-Act Survey, Kien Lim, Osvaldo Morera, Mourat Tchoshanov Sep 2009

Assessing Problem-Solving Dispositions: Likelihood-To-Act Survey, Kien Lim, Osvaldo Morera, Mourat Tchoshanov

Selected Works Temporary Series

This paper reports an ongoing study that is aimed at developing an instrument for measuring two particular problem-solving dispositions: (a) impulsive disposition refers to students’ proclivity to spontaneously proceed with an action that comes to mind, and (b) analytic disposition refers to the tendency to analyze the problem situation. The instrument is under development and consists of likelihood-to-act items in which participants indicate on a scale of 1 to 5 how likely they are to take a particular action in a given situation. The instrument was administered to 318 college students, mainly pre-service teachers. Statistical analysis indicates that likelihood-to-act items …

Mathematical Habits Of Mind, Kien Lim, Annie Selden Sep 2009

Mathematical Habits Of Mind, Kien Lim, Annie Selden

Selected Works Temporary Series

The idea of “mathematical habits of mind” has been introduced to emphasize the need to help students think about mathematics “the way mathematicians do.” There seems to be considerable interest among mathematics educators and mathematicians in helping students develop mathematical habits of mind. The objectives of this working group are: (a) to discuss various views and aspects of mathematical habits of mind, (b) to explore avenues for research, (c) to encourage research collaborations, and (d) to interest doctoral students in this topic. To facilitate the discussion during the working group meetings, we provide an overview of mathematical habits of mind, …

Second Languages And Australian Schooling, Joseph Lo Bianco Sep 2009

Second Languages And Australian Schooling, Joseph Lo Bianco

Australian Education Review

It is an underlying principle of AER 54 that active efforts should be made to cultivate the latent bilingual potential within Australia’s wider population and that this should be linked to major improvements in the quality of language teaching in schools. A combined approach of this kind will require investment in specialised preparation for language teachers, more time allocated to second language teaching in schools, and coordination of effort across school and post-schooling sectors. Section 1 describes the critical distinction between niche learning and mass learning of languages, and the current distribution of language competence throughout Australian society. The role …

The Scher Report On Non-Human Primate Research — Biased And Deeply Flawed, Jarrod Bailey, Katy Taylor Sep 2009

The Scher Report On Non-Human Primate Research — Biased And Deeply Flawed, Jarrod Bailey, Katy Taylor

Experimentation Collection

The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER) recently issued an Opinion on the need for non-human primate (NHP) use in biomedical research, and the possibilities of replacing NHP use with alternatives, as part of the Directive 86/609/EEC revision process. Here, we summarise our recent complaint to the European Ombudsman about SCHER’s Opinion and the entire consultation process. It is our opinion that the Working Group almost entirely failed to address its remit, and that the Group was unbalanced and contained insufficient expertise. The Opinion presumed the validity of NHP research with inadequate supporting evidence, and ignored …

Automatic Recognition Of Frog Calls Using A Multi-Stage Average Spectrum, Wen-Ping Chen, Song-Shyong Chen, Chun-Cheng Lin, Ya-Zhung Chen, Wen-Chih Lin Sep 2009

Automatic Recognition Of Frog Calls Using A Multi-Stage Average Spectrum, Wen-Ping Chen, Song-Shyong Chen, Chun-Cheng Lin, Ya-Zhung Chen, Wen-Chih Lin

Bioacoustics Collection

The automatic recognition of animal sounds is one of the powerful techniques for replacing the traditional ecological survey method that mainly depends on manpower, which is hence both costly and time consuming. This study developed an automatic frog call recognition system based on the combination of a pre-classification method of the syllable lengths and a multi-stage average spectrum (MSAS) method. In this system, the input frog syllables are first classified into one of the four groups determined by the pre-classification method according to syllable length. Then the proposed MSAS method is used to extract the standard feature template to analyze …

Synthesis Of Znse/Cds/Znse Nanobarbells Showing Photoinduced Charge Separation, Maria Kirsanova, Alexander Nemchinov, Nishshanka N. Hewa-Kasakarage, Nicholas Schmall, Mikhail Zamkov Sep 2009

Synthesis Of Znse/Cds/Znse Nanobarbells Showing Photoinduced Charge Separation, Maria Kirsanova, Alexander Nemchinov, Nishshanka N. Hewa-Kasakarage, Nicholas Schmall, Mikhail Zamkov

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report on it colloidal synthesis of barbell-shaped nanocrystals comprising a type II hetero-junction of ZnSe and US domains and showing compelling evidence of photoinduced charge separation at the interface of ZnSe and US materials. The nanobarbells were fabricated in a two-step procedure by growing ZnSe caps onto polar facets of US nanorods. Under present synthetic conditions, minimal growth of ZnSe shell in the lateral direction and focusing of the barbell length distribution were observed. Formation of epitaxial interfaces between nearly lattice-matched ZnSe and US crystal phases was primarily evidenced by the observation of "spatially indirect" fluorescence and long radiative …

Density Dependence And The Economic Efficacy Of Marine Reserves, Crow White Sep 2009

Density Dependence And The Economic Efficacy Of Marine Reserves, Crow White

Biological Sciences

Predictions on the efficacy of marine reserves for benefiting fisheries differ in large part due to considerations of models of either intra- or inter-cohort population density regulating fish recruitment. Here, I consider both processes acting on recruitment and show using a bioeconomic model how for many fisheries density dependent recruitment dynamics interact with harvest costs to influence fishery profit with reserves. Reserves consolidate fishing effort, favoring fisheries that can profitably harvest low-density stocks of species where adult density mediates recruitment. Conversely, proportion coastline in reserves that maximizes profit, and relative improvement in profit from reserves over conventional management, decline with …

Dividing The Oils: Dynamic Bargaining As Policy Formation In The Nigerian Petroleum Industry, Laura Hosman Sep 2009

Dividing The Oils: Dynamic Bargaining As Policy Formation In The Nigerian Petroleum Industry, Laura Hosman

Political Science

In academic studies of the interface between developing countries and large multinational oil corporations, scholars have noted that over time and through repeated interaction, the developing countries tend to negotiate better outcomes for themselves: they progress along a learning curve by incrementally improving their outcomes through bargaining and strategic interaction. This phenomenon can be demonstrated in a number of oil-rich developing countries. Nigeria’s case, however, is more complex. During the two decades following its independence, the state successfully negotiated for more control over—made strides in the developing of the skills necessary to manage—its petroleum industry, as our model would predict. …
