Joseph Green Cogswell, Charles Yaple Oct 2009

Joseph Green Cogswell, Charles Yaple

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

No history of outdoor education could have a proper beginning without recognition of Joseph Cogswell and his Round Hill School for boys. Cogswell’s reliance on the outdoors as a context for learning is undeniable as was his premise that active indoor and outdoor pursuits are key to physical and mental health. Advocates of today’s “No Child Left Inside” movement would do well to read Cogswell’s complete prescription for raising healthy children.

Improvement Of Eeg Based Brain Computer Interface By Application Of Tripolar Electrodes And Independent Component Analysis, Hongbao Cao

Doctoral Dissertations

For persons with severe disabilities, a brain computer interface (BCI) may be a viable means of communication, with scalp-recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) being the most common signal employed in the operation of a BCI. Various electrode configurations can be used for EEG recording, one of which was a set of concentric rings that was referred to as a Laplacian electrode. It has been shown that Lapalacian EEG could improve classification in EEG recognition, but the complete advantages of this configuration have not been established.

This project included two parts. First, a modeling study was performed using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to …

Determining The Gasb/Gaas-(2 × 8) Reconstruction, Jessica E. Bickel, Normand A. Modine, Joanna Mirecki Millunchick Oct 2009

Determining The Gasb/Gaas-(2 × 8) Reconstruction, Jessica E. Bickel, Normand A. Modine, Joanna Mirecki Millunchick

Physics Faculty Publications

Highly strained thin layers of GaSb/GaAs possess a (2 × 4) reconstruction at low Sb overpressures, and a (2 × 8) reconstruction at high Sb overpressures. While the atomic details of the Sb/GaAs-(2 × 4) are well known, the details of the (2 × 8) are not understood. In this paper, we use density functional theory to analyze possible (2 × 8) structures. Comparing scanning tunneling microscope images from both simulation and experiment and examining the relative energies of possible (2 × 8) structures, we show the α(2 × 8) and β(2 × 8) are the thermodynamically stable surface reconstructions …

Comparing Role-Playing Activities In Second Life And Face-To-Face Environments, Fei Gao, Jeongmin J. Noh, Matthew J. Koehler

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

This study compared student performances in role-playing activities in both a face-to-face (FTF) environment and a virtual 3D environment, Second Life (SL). We found that students produced a similar amount of communication in the two environments, but the communication styles were different. In SL role-playing activities, students took more conversational turns, but have shorter exchanges compared to the FTF environment. Students generated an equal amount of topic-related concepts in the two environments. They also reported role-playing activities in SL as more interesting and less formal. The educational implications for this study are discussed.

On Similarity Classes Of Well-Rounded Sublattices Of Z², Lenny Fukshansky Oct 2009

On Similarity Classes Of Well-Rounded Sublattices Of Z², Lenny Fukshansky

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

A lattice is called well-rounded if its minimal vectors span the corresponding Euclidean space. In this paper we study the similarity classes of well-rounded sublattices of Z2. We relate the set of all such similarity classes to a subset of primitive Pythagorean triples, and prove that it has the structure of a non-commutative infinitely generated monoid. We discuss the structure of a given similarity class, and define a zeta function corresponding to each similarity class. We relate it to Dedekind zeta of Z[i], and investigate the growth of some related Dirichlet series, which reflect on …

General Theoretical Description Of N-Body Recombination, Nirav P. Mehta, Seth T. Rittenhouse, J P. D’Incao, J Von Stecher, Chris H. Greene Oct 2009

General Theoretical Description Of N-Body Recombination, Nirav P. Mehta, Seth T. Rittenhouse, J P. D’Incao, J Von Stecher, Chris H. Greene

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

Formulas for the cross section and event rate constant describing recombination of N particles are derived in terms of general S-matrix elements. Our result immediately yields the generalized Wigner threshold scaling for the recombination of N bosons. A semianalytical formula encapsulates the overall scaling with energy and scattering length, as well as resonant modifications by the presence of N-body states near the threshold collision energy in the entrance channel. We then apply our model to the case of four-boson recombination into an Efimov trimer and a free atom.

Paraconsistent Reasoning For Owl 2, Yue Ma, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2009

Paraconsistent Reasoning For Owl 2, Yue Ma, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

A four-valued description logic has been proposed to reason with description logic based inconsistent knowledge bases. This approach has a distinct advantage that it can be implemented by invoking classical reasoners to keep the same complexity as under the classical semantics. However, this approach has so far only been studied for the basid description logic ALC. In this paper, we further study how to extend the four-valued semantics to the more expressive description logic SROIQ which underlies the forthcoming revision of the Web Ontology Language, OWL 2, and also investigate how it fares when adapated to tractable description logics including …

Grades 5-6 American Revolution, Gina Gonzalez

Social Studies

This is a social studies lesson for 5th and 6th graders on the American Revolution. Through this lesson students will be able to understand the immediate causes of the American revolution, understand the reaction of the colonists to these causes, and discover how each student would react if they were the colonists and to explore different alternatives to war, if any. The lesson is tiered into three levels where students are grouped by ability. In each level students will receive a task card and can choose the activity that is of most interest to them.

Listen: A Close Reading Of Vonnegut, Elizabeth Zaretsky '10 Oct 2009

Listen: A Close Reading Of Vonnegut, Elizabeth Zaretsky '10

2009 Fall Semester

Listen: Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time. Billy has gone to sleep a senile widower and awakened on his wedding day. He has walked through a door in 1955 and come out another one in 1941. He has gone back through that door to find himself in 1963. He has seen his death and birth many times, he says, and pays random visits to all the events in between. (Slaughterhouse-Five, pg 23)

Kurt Vonnegut has long been respected as a master of the written word. In this passage, he uses a specific tense, repetition, and clause arrangement to portray …

The Final Word: The Use Of Epigraphs In Watchmen, Kevin Chen '10 Oct 2009

The Final Word: The Use Of Epigraphs In Watchmen, Kevin Chen '10

2009 Fall Semester

Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen, a graphic novel depicting a superhero-inhabited, Cold War-era world on the verge of mutually assured destruction, presents an alternate-universe story that examines the ethics of justice underlying humanity. Through the skillful synergy of image and text, the author and illustrator have created a vibrant novel offering an aesthetic, intellectual experience that traditional literature and visual art independently fail to achieve. Of significance are the quotations that Moore cites to complete each chapter of the book. While taken from disparate sources, they share a commonality in their remarkable relevance to the story. Moore concludes …

The Friar, Joly Wu '11 Oct 2009

The Friar, Joly Wu '11

2009 Fall Semester

Though Hubert the Friar is supposed to be a shepherd for the devout, he (as revealed through the Geoffrey Chaucer’s sly, ironic writing) prances around in expensive clothing, lusts after anyone he wishes, and generally violates the teachings of the Church he vowed to represent. Thus, through its abundant detail and description of the Friar, the Canterbury Tales by Chaucer paints a portrait of a unique character that contradicts his commitment to the 14th century Catholic Church.

Interpreting Meteors, Weeds, And Sunshine: Acts Of God In The Scarlet Letter, Eleanor Cory '12 Oct 2009

Interpreting Meteors, Weeds, And Sunshine: Acts Of God In The Scarlet Letter, Eleanor Cory '12

2009 Fall Semester

In recent years, many occurrences—from hurricanes to medical rarities to pictures on pieces of toast—have been labeled acts of God. Those who disagree attribute this association to the idea that people read what they want into a situation. Similar comparisons were made in the time of the Puritans, although theirs tended to be taken more seriously and often held authority in government or court. Still, the idea that these “messages from God” are subconsciously interpreted to fit personal beliefs can also be applied to those of Massachusetts Bay. In his novel The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne shows that when events …

Evaluations Of Nam Forecasts On Midtropospheric Perturbation-Induced Convective Storms Over The U.S. Northern Plains, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, T. C. Chen, S. E. Taylor Oct 2009

Evaluations Of Nam Forecasts On Midtropospheric Perturbation-Induced Convective Storms Over The U.S. Northern Plains, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, T. C. Chen, S. E. Taylor

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

In the U.S. northern plains, summer progressive convective storms that occur in weakly forced environ- ments are often coupled with short-wave perturbations that are embedded in the midlevel northwesterly flow. These midtropospheric perturbations (MPs) are capable of inducing propagating convection that contributes to a majority of the rainfall over the northern plains during July and August. There is a possibility that the difficulties of numerical weather prediction models in forecasting summer convective rainfall over the northern plains are partly attributed to their deficiency in forecasting MPs. The present study tests this possibility through examining operational forecasts by the North American …
