Environmental Options And Technological Innovation:, Simone Borghesi, Angelo Antoci, Marcello Galeotti Oct 2009

Environmental Options And Technological Innovation:, Simone Borghesi, Angelo Antoci, Marcello Galeotti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper analyses the effects on economic agents' behaviour of an innovative environmental protection mechanism that the Public Administration of a tourist region may adopt to attract visitors while protecting the environment. On the one hand, the Public Administration sells to the tourists an environmental call option that gives them the possibility of being (partially or totally) reimbursed if the environmental quality in the region turns out to be below a given threshold level. On the other hand, it offers the firms that adopt an innovative, non-polluting technology an environmental put option that allows them to get a reimbursement for …

Stationary Consistent Equilibrium Coalition Structures Constitute The Recursive Core, László Á. Kóczy Oct 2009

Stationary Consistent Equilibrium Coalition Structures Constitute The Recursive Core, László Á. Kóczy

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We study coalitional games where the proceeds from cooperation depend on the entire coalition structure. The coalition structure core (Kóczy, 2007) is a generalisation of the coalition structure core for such games. We introduce a noncooperative, sequential coalition formation model and show that the set of equilibrium outcomes coincides with the recursive core. In order to extend past results to games that are not totally balanced (understood in this special setting) we introduce subgame-consistency that requires perfectness in relevant subgames only, while subgames that are never reached are ignored.

The 2008 Witch Model: New Model Features And Baseline, Enrica De Cian, Valentina Bosetti, Alessandra Sgobbi, Massimo Tavoni Oct 2009

The 2008 Witch Model: New Model Features And Baseline, Enrica De Cian, Valentina Bosetti, Alessandra Sgobbi, Massimo Tavoni

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

WITCH is an energy-economy-climate model developed by the climate change group at FEEM. The model has been extensively used in the past 3 years for the economic analysis of climate change policies. WITCH is a hybrid top-down economic model with a representation of the energy sector of medium complexity. Two distinguishing features of the WITCH model are the representation of endogenous technological change and the game–theoretic set-up. Technological change is driven by innovation and diffusion processes, both of which feature international spillovers. World countries are grouped in 12 regions which interact with each other in a setting of strategic interdependence. …

Input Production Joint Venture, Gianpaolo Rossini, Cecilia Vergari Oct 2009

Input Production Joint Venture, Gianpaolo Rossini, Cecilia Vergari

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In many industries it is quite common to observe firms delegating the production of essential inputs to independent ventures jointly established with competing rivals. The diffusion of this arrangement and the favourable stance of competition authorities call for the assessment of the social and private desirability of Input Production Joint Ventures (IPJV), which represent a form of input production cooperation, not investigated so far. IPJV can be seen as an intermediate organizational setting lying between the two extremes of vertical integration and vertical separation. Our investigation is based on an oligopoly model with horizontally differentiated goods. We characterize the conditions …

A Search Model For Joint Implementation, Giovanni Bella Oct 2009

A Search Model For Joint Implementation, Giovanni Bella

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The aim of this paper is to present a search model in the field of environmental economics, where so-called clean and dirty producers enter the trading market, both looking for a partner with whom to exchange the goods they are endowed with. The model derived in this paper is rather simple. Nevertheless, it is able to produce a series of interesting results and useful insights, and is conveniently used here as a framework to explain the functioning of Joint Implementation programmes for polluting emissions’ reduction.

Modeling Soil Depth From Topographic And Land Cover Attributes, Teklu K. Tesfa, David G. Tarboton, David G. Chandler, James P. Mcnamara Oct 2009

Modeling Soil Depth From Topographic And Land Cover Attributes, Teklu K. Tesfa, David G. Tarboton, David G. Chandler, James P. Mcnamara

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Soil depth is an important input parameter in hydrological and ecological modeling. Presently, the soil depth data available in national soil databases (STATSGO and SSURGO) from the Natural Resources Conservation Service are provided as averages within generalized land units (map units). Spatial uncertainty within these units limits their applicability for distributed modeling in complex terrain. This work reports statistical models for prediction of soil depth in a semiarid mountainous watershed that are based upon the relationship between soil depth and topographic and land cover attributes. Soil depth was surveyed by driving a rod into the ground until refusal at locations …

Differential Cross Sections For The Reactions Γp→Pη And Γp→Pη', M. Williams, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Et. Al. Oct 2009

Differential Cross Sections For The Reactions Γp→Pη And Γp→Pη', M. Williams, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Et. Al.

Physics Faculty Publications

High-statistics differential cross sections for the reactions γp → pη and γp → pη' have been measured using the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies from near threshold up to 2.84 GeV. The η' results are the most precise to date and provide the largest energy and angular coverage. The η measurements extend the energy range of the world’s large-angle results by approximately 300 MeV. These new data, in particular the η' measurements, are likely to help constrain the analyses being performed to search for new baryon resonance states.

Terrain Constrained Stereo Correspondence, Gabrielle Inglis, Chris Roman Oct 2009

Terrain Constrained Stereo Correspondence, Gabrielle Inglis, Chris Roman

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

There is a persistent need in the oceanographic community for accurate three dimensional reconstructions of seafloor structures. To meet this need underwater mapping techniques have expanded to include the use of stereo vision and high frequency multibeam sonar for mapping scenes 10's to 100's of square meters in size. Both techniques have relative advantages and disadvantages that depend on the task at hand and the desired accuracy. In this paper, we develop a method to constrain the often problematic stereo correspondence search to small sections of the image that correspond to estimated ranges along the epipolar lines calculated from coregistered …

Ion Observations From Geosynchronous Orbit As A Proxy For Ion Cyclotron Wave Growth During Storm Times, L. W. Blum, E. A. Macdonald, S. P. Gary, M. F. Thomsen, Harlan E. Spence Oct 2009

Ion Observations From Geosynchronous Orbit As A Proxy For Ion Cyclotron Wave Growth During Storm Times, L. W. Blum, E. A. Macdonald, S. P. Gary, M. F. Thomsen, Harlan E. Spence

Physics & Astronomy

[1] There is still much to be understood about the processes contributing to relativistic electron enhancements and losses in the radiation belts. Wave particle interactions with both whistler and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves may precipitate or accelerate these electrons. This study examines the relation between EMIC waves and resulting relativistic electron flux levels after geomagnetic storms. A proxy for enhanced EMIC waves is developed using Los Alamos National Laboratory Magnetospheric Plasma Analyzer plasma data from geosynchronous orbit in conjunction with linear theory. In a statistical study using superposed epoch analysis, it is found that for storms resulting in net …

Physical Charges In Qed And Qcd, A Ilderton, M Lavelle, D Mcmullan Oct 2009

Physical Charges In Qed And Qcd, A Ilderton, M Lavelle, D Mcmullan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We show that the `dressing' approach, which describes physical charges as gauge invariant composites of matter and clouds of gauge bosons, arises naturally in gauge theories. We give perturbative examples of dressings for both asymptotic charges and for states in which the fields are confined to a compact volume as is required, for example, by causality in pair creation. In QCD, we use dressed states to demonstrate explicitly how Gribov copies obstruct the non-perturbative construction of colour charges.

Environment, Channel, And Interference Awareness For Next Generation Wireless Networks, Serhan Yarkan Oct 2009

Environment, Channel, And Interference Awareness For Next Generation Wireless Networks, Serhan Yarkan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wireless communication systems have evolved substantially over the last two decades. The explosive growth of the wireless communications market is expected to continue in the future, as the demand for all types of wireless services is increasing. Beside providing higher data rates, next generation wireless networks (NGWN) are expected to have advanced capabilities such as interoperability, efficient spectrum utilization along with a wide variety of applications over different domains (e.g., public safety and military, aeronautical networks, femtocells, and so on) to the mobile users while serving as many users as possible.

However, these advanced capabilities and services must …

Effects Of Gravitational Slip On The Higher-Order Moments Of The Matter Distribution, Scott F. Daniel Oct 2009

Effects Of Gravitational Slip On The Higher-Order Moments Of The Matter Distribution, Scott F. Daniel

Dartmouth Scholarship

Cosmological departures from general relativity offer a possible explanation for the cosmic acceleration. To linear order, these departures (quantified by the model-independent parameter ϖ, referred to as a “gravitational slip”) amplify or suppress the growth of structure in the universe relative to what we would expect to see from a general relativistic universe lately dominated by a cosmological constant. As structures collapse and become more dense, linear perturbation theory is an inadequate descriptor of their behavior, and one must extend calculations to nonlinear order. If the effects of gravitational slip extend to these higher orders, we might expect to see …

Segmented Professions: Further Considerations Of Theory And Practice In Lis And Librarianship, Andrew Carlin Oct 2009

Segmented Professions: Further Considerations Of Theory And Practice In Lis And Librarianship, Andrew Carlin

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

How relevant are theories of information to practical library work? Using sociology and the philosophy of social sciences, this essay discusses how theoretical work defines an area of knowledge in relation to other fields, the identification of researchable phenomena, and how phenomena are established as its own subject matter. Theorizing is a generic activity, highlighting connections between theory and practice, profession and field. While proposing that theorizing is important, this paper explores the nature of theorizing in LIS, and suggests that its cognitivistic foundations impede theory development. Information is a linkage between theory and practice, and this paper argues that …
