Grounded Technology Integration In Mathematics, Neal Grandgenett, Judi Harris, Mark Hofer
Grounded Technology Integration In Mathematics, Neal Grandgenett, Judi Harris, Mark Hofer
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
Teachers today can choose from a variety of technologies for teaching mathematics. Drill-and-practice software, virtual manipulatives, real-life data sets, interactive geometry programs, graphing calculators, robots, and computer-based laboratories are just a few of the options available. But it can be difficult for mathematics teachers to know just which technologies to choose to support student learning in particular lessons.
One way to help teachers integrate technologies effectively is to match technology integration strategies to how teachers plan, rather than asking teachers to plan instruction that exploits the opportunities offered by particular educational technologies. For more information, see our previous article ( …
Size-Biased Branching Population Measures And The Multi-Type X Log X Condition, Peter Olofsson
Size-Biased Branching Population Measures And The Multi-Type X Log X Condition, Peter Olofsson
Mathematics Faculty Research
We investigate the x log x condition for a general (Crump–Mode–Jagers) multi-type branching process with arbitrary type space by constructing a size-biased population measure that relates to the ordinary population measure via the intrinsic martingale Wt. Sufficiency of the x log x condition for a non-degenerate limit of Wt is proved and conditions for necessity are investigated.
Improving Replica Exchange Using Driven Scaling, Steven W. Rick
Improving Replica Exchange Using Driven Scaling, Steven W. Rick
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Replica exchange is a powerful simulation method in which simulations are run at a series of temperatures, with the highest temperature chosen so phase space can be sampled efficiently. In order for swaps to be accepted, the energy distributions of adjacent replicas must have some overlap. This can create the need for many replicas for large systems. In this paper, we present a new method in which the potential energy is scaled by a parameter, which has an explicit time dependence. Scaling the potential energy broadens the distribution of energy and reduces the number of replicas necessary to span a …

The Lick AGN Monitoring Project targeted 13 nearby Seyfert 1 galaxies with the intent of measuring the masses of their central black holes using reverberation mapping. The sample includes 12 galaxies selected to have black holes with masses roughly in the range 106-107 M ☉, as well as the well-studied active galactic nucleus (AGN) NGC 5548. In conjunction with a spectroscopic monitoring campaign, we obtained broadband B and V images on most nights from 2008 February through 2008 May. The imaging observations were carried out by four telescopes: the 0.76 m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope, the …

Pointcut fragility is a well-documented problem in Aspect-Oriented Programming; changes to the base-code can lead to join points incorrectly falling in or out of the scope of pointcuts. We present an automated approach that limits fragility problems by providing mechanical assistance in pointcut maintenance. The approach is based on harnessing arbitrarily deep structural commonalities between program elements corresponding to join points selected by a pointcut. The extracted patterns are then applied to later versions to offer suggestions of new join points that may require inclusion. We demonstrate the usefulness of our technique by rejuvenating pointcuts in multiple versions of several …

Implementation of Sustainable Management Practices at Two California Central Coast Vineyards and Their Effects on Soil Fertility
Dawn Michelle Stimson
“Sustainable agriculture” has gained increased popularity in recent years. This study was conducted to determine the effects of sustainable management practices on soil fertility at two California Central Coast vineyards. The effects of cover crops (Erosion Control Mix - blando brome [Bromus hordeaceus], hykon rose clover [Trifolium hirtum All.], and zorro annual fescue [Vulpia mourns]), green waste compost (Forest Blend), and reduced tillage on soil fertility were investigated in San Luis Obispo, California on a clay and sandy loam soil. …

Aortic flow and pressure result from the interactions between the heart and arterial system. In this work, we considered these interactions by utilizing a lumped parameter heart model as an inflow boundary condition for three-dimensional finite element simulations of aortic blood flow and vessel wall dynamics. The ventricular pressure–volume behavior of the lumped parameter heart model is approximated using a time varying elastance function scaled from a normalized elastance function. When the aortic valve is open, the coupled multidomain method is used to strongly couple the lumped parameter heart model and three-dimensional arterial models and compute ventricular volume, ventricular pressure, …

Performance Measurement Of Supply Chain Management: A Decision Framework For Evaluating And Selecting Supplier Performance In A Supply Chain, A. D. Sarode, P. M. Khodke
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
Supply Chain Management (SCM) has gained significance as one of the 21st century manufacturing paradigms for improving organizational competitiveness. Supply chain ensures improved efficiency and effectiveness of not only product transfer, but also information sharing between the complex hierarchies of all the tiers. The literature on SCM that deals with strategies and technologies for effectively managing a supply chain is quite vast. In recent years, organizational performance measurement (PM) and metrics have received much attention from researchers and practitioners. Performance measurement and metrics have an important role to play in setting objectives, evaluating performance, and determining future courses of actions. …

Fragmentation Properties Of Three-Membered Ring Heterocyclic Molecules By Partial Ion Yield Spectroscopy: C2h4o And C2h4s, Wayne C. Stolte, I. Dumitriu, S-W Yu, Gunnar Ohrwall, Maria Novella Piancastelli, Dennis W. Lindle
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research
We investigated the photofragmentation properties of two three-membered ring heterocyclic molecules, C2H4O and C2H4S, by total and partial ion yield spectroscopy. Positive and negative ions have been collected as a function of photon energy around the C 1s and O 1s ionization thresholds in C2H4O, and around the S 2p and C 1s thresholds in C2H4S. We underline similarities and differences between these two analogous systems. We present a new assignment of the spectral features around the C K-edge and the sulfur L2 …

Comparison Of Gpa Between Students Involved And Uninvolved In A Relationship, Jessica M. Vaeth
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
College is a journey full of living, failing, learning and experiences that brings an individual a little bit further along life. In today’s society, relationships are existent in many universities, and some students may be faced with that exact same dilemma. I decided to do my research project on a comparison of GPA between students who are in a relationship and those we are not. A relationship is defined as follows: a romantic, committed bond between two people for a minimum of a month. I assessed this information by distributing a 10 question survey to 92 undergraduate college students. After …

Computer-Generated Global Map Of Valley Networks On Mars, W. Luo, T.F. Stepinski
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
The presence of valley networks (VN) on Mars suggests that early Mars was warmer and wetter than present. However, detailed geomorphic analyses of individual networks have not led to a consensus regarding their origin. An additional line of evidence can be provided by the global pattern of dissection on Mars, but the currently available global map of VN, compiled from Viking images, is incomplete and outdated. We created an updated map of VN by using a computer algorithm that parses topographic data and recognizes valleys by their morphologic signature. This computer-generated map was visually inspected and edited to produce the …

Activity-Aware Ecg-Based Patient Authentication For Remote Health Monitoring, Janani Sriram, Minho Shin, Tanzeem Choudhury, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
Mobile medical sensors promise to provide an efficient, accurate, and economic way to monitor patients' health outside the hospital. Patient authentication is a necessary security requirement in remote health monitoring scenarios. The monitoring system needs to make sure that the data is coming from the right person before any medical or financial decisions are made based on the data. Credential-based authentication methods (e.g., passwords, certificates) are not well-suited for remote healthcare as patients could hand over credentials to someone else. Furthermore, one-time authentication using credentials or trait-based biometrics (e.g., face, fingerprints, iris) do not cover the entire monitoring period and …

Acid Rain: The Effects, Torrey Mortimer
Acid Rain: The Effects, Torrey Mortimer
Social Sciences
In a world experiencing increasing population, urbanization, and developing nations looking to compete on a global market with post-industrial nations, the effects of acid precipitation require greater consideration. As the world’s energy demand rises, and with the cheapest and most abundant source of energy being coal, the occurrence of acid precipitation is on the rise.
The goal of my project is to research and report on the effects of acid deposition on humans, animals and the environment that surrounds them. When I have completed my project, I hope to be able to explain the impacts that acid deposition has on …

Geodetic data from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and from satellite interferometric radar (InSAR) are revolutionizing how we look at instantaneous tectonic deformation, but the significance for long-term finite strain in orogenic belts is less clear. We review two different ways of analyzing geodetic data: velocity gradient fields from which one can extract strain, dilatation, and rotation rate, and elastic block modeling, which assumes that deformation is not continuous but occurs primarily on networks of interconnected faults separating quasi-rigid blocks. These methods are complementary: velocity gradients are purely kinematic and yield information about regional deformation; the calculation does not …
Finite Temperature Effects In Magnetic Materials: Model And Ab Initio Studies, Aleksander L. Wysocki
Finite Temperature Effects In Magnetic Materials: Model And Ab Initio Studies, Aleksander L. Wysocki
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The understanding of finite temperature behavior of magnetic materials is of vital importance for spintronic applications. In this dissertation different theoretical techniques for studying magnetic thermodynamics of various materials are discussed. Cr2O3 is an antiferromagnetic insulator that was proposed to be a key component of new spintronic devices. The magnetic properties of Cr2O3 were studied using the LDA+U method. Magnetism was found to be very well described by the Heisenberg model. Subsequently, magnetic thermodynamics was explored using quantum pair cluster approximation. Overall, very good agreement with experiment was found for the ground state and …

Sparse Hypergraphs And Pebble Game Algorithms, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran
Sparse Hypergraphs And Pebble Game Algorithms, Ileana Streinu, Louis Theran
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
A hypergraph G=(V,E) is (k,ℓ)-sparse if no subset V′⊂V spans more than k|V′|−ℓ hyperedges. We characterize (k,ℓ)-sparse hypergraphs in terms of graph theoretic, matroidal and algorithmic properties. We extend several well-known theorems of Haas, Lovász, Nash-Williams, Tutte, and White and Whiteley, linking arboricity of graphs to certain counts on the number of edges. We also address the problem of finding lower-dimensional representations of sparse hypergraphs, and identify a critical behavior in terms of the sparsity parameters k and ℓ. Our constructions extend the pebble games of Lee and Streinu [A. Lee, I. Streinu, Pebble game algorithms …

Talent: Implications For A U.S. Army Officer Corps Strategy, Casey Wardynski Colonel, David S. Lyle Colonel, Michael J. Colarusso Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
In our proposed Army Officer Corps Strategy, we established the interdependency of accessing, developing, retaining and employing talented leaders. Before exploring each of those functions in greater detail, however, we must first define “talent.” In our view, talent is something possessed by everyone. In fact, each individual has a unique distribution of talent across three dimensions—skills, knowledge, and behaviors. Effective organizations understand this. They successfully access and retain a depth and breadth of talent that can be developed and employed against current and future requirements.

Dynamic Load Balancing For I/O-Intensive Applications On Clusters, Xiao Qin, Hong Jiang, Adam Manzanares, Xiaojun Ruan, Shu Yin
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Load balancing for clusters has been investigated extensively, mainly focusing on the effective usage of global CPU and memory resources. However, previous CPU- or memory-centric load balancing schemes suffer significant performance drop under I/O-intensive workloads due to the imbalance of I/O load. To solve this problem, we propose two simple yet effective I/O-aware load-balancing schemes for two types of clusters: (1) homogeneous clusters where nodes are identical and (2) heterogeneous clusters, which are comprised of a variety of nodes with different performance characteristics in computing power, memory capacity, and disk speed. In addition to assigning I/O-intensive sequential and parallel jobs …

Smartstore: A New Metadata Organization Paradigm With Semantic-Awareness For Next-Generation File Systems, Yu Hua, Hong Jiang, Yifeng Zhu, Dan Feng, Lei Tian
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Existing storage systems using hierarchical directory tree do not meet scalability and functionality requirements for exponentially growing datasets and increasingly complex queries in Exabyte-level systems with billions of files. This paper proposes semantic-aware organization, called SmartStore, which exploits metadata semantics of files to judiciously aggregate correlated files into semantic-aware groups by using information retrieval tools. Decentralized design improves system scalability and reduces query latency for complex queries (range and top-k queries), which is conducive to constructing semantic-aware caching, and conventional filename-based query. SmartStore limits search scope of complex query to a single or a minimal number of semantically related groups …

Coupled Collaborative In-Class Activities And Individual Follow-Up Homework Promote Interactive Engagement And Improve Student Learning Outcomes In A College-Level Environmental Geology Course, Leilani Arthurs, Alexis Templeton
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Interactive engagement pedagogies that emerge from a constructivist model of teaching and learning are often a challenge to implement in larger classes for a number of reasons including the physical layout of the classroom (e.g. fixed chairs in an amphitheater-style room), the logistics of organizing a large number of students into small peer-learning groups, the ability of a single instructor to personally interact with each of many small groups, and the design of small group activities that are engaging and facilitate student learning. For a large introductory-level Environmental Geology college course, 5 coupled collaborative class-long in-class activities and individual follow-up …
