Electrocorticographic Neural Correlates Of Arm Movements And Associated Goal Orientation In Humans, Nicholas Anderson Jan 2009

Electrocorticographic Neural Correlates Of Arm Movements And Associated Goal Orientation In Humans, Nicholas Anderson

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This thesis analyzed the cortical representation of arm kinematics, target encoding, and goal encoding using subdural electrocorticographic: ECoG) recordings in humans. Using a joystick-based visuomotor task, subjects performed both a standard, delayed match-to-sample center-out task as well as a circular tracing task. Spectral analyses of the ECoG signals clearly showed significant cosine tuning for hand velocity, direction, position and speed throughout the cortex. In particular, velocity tuning was best represented spectrally in a high gamma band from around 90-150 Hz in the primary motor cortical regions. In dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: DLPFC), cortical activity in the 150-250 Hz band of the …

Antibiotic Resistance Of Helicobacter Pylori Strains In The United Arab Emirates And Its Relation To The Gene Associated To Gastric Cancer “Cag A Gene”, Wafa Ali Rashid Al-Tayyari

Theses

Helicobacter pylori is a flagellated corkscrew, slow growing neutrophilic gram negative ureolytic organism. It has an extraordinary ability to establish infection in human stomach that can last for years or decades. Its eradication remains an important public health challenge especially in light of broadening indications and increasing antimicrobial resistance.

AIM: i) Identification of H. pylori in UAE patients ii) Determination of the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (mutation in 23S rRNA gene in clarithromycin, and deletion in RdxA gene in metronidazole) among H. pylori strains isolated from U.A.E patients by using molecular methods, iii) Ascertain whether Cag A- positive H. …

Filling Essential Laminations, Michael Hamm Jan 2009

Filling Essential Laminations, Michael Hamm

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Thurston and, later, Calegari-Dunfield found superlaminations in certain laminated 3-manifolds, the existence of which implies inclusions into Homeo S1 of the fundamental groups of those manifolds. The present paper extends the construction of the superlamination, and finds an infinite class of manifolds to which the extension does not yield such an inclusion of groups. Specifically, Calegari and Dunfield's proof of the existence of such an inclusion into Homeo S1 depended on their filling lemma, which states that essential laminations with solid torus guts can have leaves added to them to yield essential laminations with solid torus complementary regions.: Roughly, a …

Connections Between Floer-Type Invariants And Morse-Type Invariants Of Legendrian Knots., Michael Henry Jan 2009

Connections Between Floer-Type Invariants And Morse-Type Invariants Of Legendrian Knots., Michael Henry

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

We investigate existing Legendrian knot invariants and discover new connections between the theory of generating families, normal rulings and the Chekanov-Eliashberg differential graded algebra: CE-DGA). Given a Legendrian knot $\sK$ with generic front projection $\sfront$, we define a combinatorial/algebraic object on $\sfront$ called a \emph{Morse complex sequence}, abbreviated MCS. An MCS encodes a finite sequence of Morse homology complexes. Every suitably generic generating family for $\sfront$ admits an MCS and every MCS has a naturally associated graded normal ruling. In addition, every MCS has a naturally associated augmentation of the CE-DGA of the Ng resolution $\sNgres$ of the front $\sfront$. …

Ultraviolet Radiation Sensitivity In Cave Bacteria: Evidence Of Adaptation To The Subsurface?, Jessica R. Snider, Caitlin Goin, Robert V. Miller, Penelope J. Boston, Diana E. Northup Jan 2009

Ultraviolet Radiation Sensitivity In Cave Bacteria: Evidence Of Adaptation To The Subsurface?, Jessica R. Snider, Caitlin Goin, Robert V. Miller, Penelope J. Boston, Diana E. Northup

International Journal of Speleology

We hypothesize that a reduced capacity to withstand or repair cellular damage from ultraviolet radiation may be present in cave-adapted microorganisms that never experience such conditions. However, a small number of previous studies have shown that some subsurface bacteria do not show greater sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) than surface bacteria. To estimate UVR sensitivity in cave bacteria, bacterial isolates were collected from Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico, U.S.A., and percent survival following exposure to various UVC and UVA radiation doses was determined. Cave bacteria from Left Hand Tunnel in Carlsbad Cavern and surface bacteria from soil and rocks above Carlsbad …

Guanophilic Fungi In Three Caves Of Southwestern Puerto Rico, Ángel M. Nieves-Rivera, Carlos J. Santos-Flores, Frank M. Dugan, Thomas E. Miller

International Journal of Speleology

Fifty species of guanophilic (bat guano-loving) fungi were isolated from field-collected samples within three caves in southwestern Puerto Rico; most were mitosporic fungi (23 species). The caves studied were Cueva La Tuna (Cabo Rojo), Cueva de Malano (Sistema de Los Chorros, San Germán), and Cueva Viento (El Convento Cave-Spring System, Guayanilla-Peñuelas). The most conspicuous fungus by far was the zygomycete Circinella umbellata (Mucorales). Circinella umbellata dominated the bat guano incubation chambers (Petri dishes lined with sterile filter paper moistened with sterile water) at ambient laboratory conditions. Nineteen species of basidiomycetes (e.g., Ganoderma cf. resinaceum, Geastrum cf. minimum, Lepiota …

Microscopic Fungi Isolated From The Domica Cave System (Slovak Karst National Park, Slovakia). A Review, Alena Nováková

International Journal of Speleology

A broad spectrum, total of 195 microfungal taxa, were isolated from various cave substrates (cave air, cave sediments, bat droppings and/or guano, earthworm casts, isopods and diplopods faeces, mammalian dung, cadavers, vermiculations, insect bodies, plant material, etc.) from the cave system of the Domica Cave (Slovak Karst National Park, Slovakia) using dilution, direct and gravity settling culture plate methods and several isolation media. Penicillium glandicola, Trichoderma polysporum, Oidiodendron cerealis, Mucor spp., Talaromyces flavus and species of the genus Doratomyces were isolated frequently during our study. Estimated microfungal species diversity was compared with literature records from the same …

Microbial Communities And Associated Mineral Fabrics In Altamira Cave, Spain, Soledad Cuezva, Sergio Sanchez-Moral, Cesareo Saiz-Jimenez, Juan Carlos Cañaveras Jan 2009

Microbial Communities And Associated Mineral Fabrics In Altamira Cave, Spain, Soledad Cuezva, Sergio Sanchez-Moral, Cesareo Saiz-Jimenez, Juan Carlos Cañaveras

International Journal of Speleology

Evidences of microbial colonizations were observed in Altamira Cave, Spain. These consisted of distinct small coloured colonies, both on walls and ceiling, mainly located in the area near the cave entrance, which progressed until reaching the Polychromes Hall. The colonizations were characterized by a high morphological and microstructural variability and related to biomineralization processes. Two main types of CaCO3 deposits were related to the colonies: rosette- or nest-like aggregates of rhombohedral calcite crystals, and spheroid to hemispheroid CaCO3 elements. Colonies distribution seems to be controlled by microenvironmental conditions inside the cavity. The areas of the cave showing higher …

The Association Between Bubble Trails And Folia: A Morphological And Sedimentary Indicator Of Hypogenic Speleogenesis By Degassing, Example From Adaouste Cave (Provence, France), Philippe Audra, Ludovic Mocochain, Jean-Yves Bigot, Jean-Claude Nobécourt Jan 2009

The Association Between Bubble Trails And Folia: A Morphological And Sedimentary Indicator Of Hypogenic Speleogenesis By Degassing, Example From Adaouste Cave (Provence, France), Philippe Audra, Ludovic Mocochain, Jean-Yves Bigot, Jean-Claude Nobécourt

International Journal of Speleology

Bubble trails are subaqueous features in carbonate caves, which are made by the corrosion of ascending carbon dioxide bubbles. Folia are calcite deposits resembling inverted rimstone dams in saturated pools. Based on morphological studies in Adaouste Cave (Provence, France) and on studies elsewhere in the world, we propose a new genetic model for folia, close to the model of Green (1991). The association of bubble trails and folia, occurring on overhanging walls, is interpreted to be an indicator of hypogenic degassing occurring just below the water table. The association is the result of juxtaposed processes composed of corrosion along bubble …

A Terminological Matter: Paragenesis, Antigravitative Erosion Or Antigravitational Erosion?, Giancarlo Pasini Jan 2009

A Terminological Matter: Paragenesis, Antigravitative Erosion Or Antigravitational Erosion?, Giancarlo Pasini

International Journal of Speleology

In the speleological literature three terms are utilized to designate the “ascending erosion”: paragenesis (= paragénésis, coined in 1968), antigravitative erosion (= erosione antigravitativa, coined in 1966) and antigravitational erosion (wrong English translation of the Italian term erosione antigravitativa, utilized later on). The term paragenesis should be abandoned because of the priority of the term erosione antigravitativa - on the ground of the “law of priority” – and because of its ambiguous etimology. On the other hand, the term antigravitational erosion should be forsaken in favour of the term antigravitative erosion, given the meaning that the terms gravitation and gravity …

Cryogenic Cave Carbonates From The Cold Wind Cave, Nízke Tatry Mountains, Slovakia: Extending The Age Range Of Cryogenic Cave Carbonate Formation To The Saalian, Karel Žák, Helena Hercman, Monika Orvošová, Ivana Jačková

International Journal of Speleology

Cold Wind Cave, located at elevations ranging between 1,600 and 1,700 m a. s. l. in the main range of the Nízke Tatry Mountains (Slovakia), is linked in origin with the adjacent Dead Bats Cave. Together, these caves form a major cave system located within a narrow tectonic slice of Triassic sediments. Both caves have undergone complex multiphase development. A system of sub-horizontal cave levels characterized by large, tunnel-like corridors was formed during the Tertiary, when elevation differences surrounding the cave were less pronounced than today. The central part of the Nízke Tatry Mountains, together with the cave systems, was …

Observations On The Cave-Associated Beetles (Coleoptera) Of Nova Scotia, Canada, Max Moseley Jan 2009

Observations On The Cave-Associated Beetles (Coleoptera) Of Nova Scotia, Canada, Max Moseley

International Journal of Speleology

The cave-associated invertebrates of Nova Scotia constitute a fauna at a very early stage of post-glacial recolonization. The Coleoptera are characterized by low species diversity. A staphylinid Quedius spelaeus spelaeus, a predator, is the only regularly encountered beetle. Ten other terrestrial species registered from cave environments in the province are collected infrequently. They include three other rove-beetles: Brathinus nitidus, Gennadota canadensis and Atheta annexa. The latter two together with Catops gratiosus (Leiodidae) constitute a small group of cave-associated beetles found in decompositional situations. Quedius s. spelaeus and a small suite of other guanophiles live in accumulations of …

Deeply virtual Compton scattering, γ*p→γp has been measured in e+p collisions at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 61.1 pb-1. Cross sections are presented as a function of the photon virtuality, Q2, and photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, W, for a wide region of the phase space, Q2 > 1.5GeV2 and 40 < W < 170GeV. A subsample of events in which the scattered proton is measured in the leading proton spectrometer, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31.3 pb-1, is used for the first direct measurement of the differential cross section as a function of t, where t is the square of the four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. © SISSA 2009.

Beauty photoproduction in dijet events has been measured at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 126 pb-1. Beauty was identified in events with a muon in the final state by using the transverse momentum of the muon relative to the closest jet. Lifetime information from the silicon vertex detector was also used; the impact parameter of the muon with respect to the primary vertex was exploited to discriminate between signal and background. Cross sections for beauty production as a function of the muon and the jet variables as well as dijet correlations are compared to QCD …

The Nonexistence Of Shearlet-Like Scaling Multifunctions That Satisfy Certain Minimally Desirable Properties And Characterizations Of The Reproducing Properties Of The Integer Lattice Translations Of A Countable Collection Of Square Integrable Functions, Robert Houska

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In Chapter 1, we introduce three varieties of reproducing systems—Bessel systems, frames, and Riesz bases—within the Hilbert space context and prove a number of elementary results, including qualitative characterizations of each and several results regarding the combination and partitioning of reproducing systems.

In Chapter 2, we characterize when the integer lattice translations of a countable collection of square integrable functions forms a Bessel system, a frame, and a Riesz basis.

In Chapter 3, we introduce composite wavelet systems and generalize several well-known classical wavelet system results—including those regarding pointwise values of the Fourier transform of the wavelet and scaling function …

Hart Avec Kant: On The Inseparability Of Law And Morality, David G. Carlson Jan 2009

Hart Avec Kant: On The Inseparability Of Law And Morality, David G. Carlson

Articles

The article critiques H.L.A. Hart's The Concept of Law from a Kantian perspective, arguing that Hart's separation thesis between law and morality is untenable. Hart's internal point of view, a cornerstone of his jurisprudence, is revealed to be indistinguishable from morality, undermining his effort to separate law from moral considerations. The analysis contends that Hart's theory ultimately collapses into a Kantian framework, where law and morality share a common form, challenging the foundational principles of legal positivism.

Development Of A Spatial Decision Support Tool For Watershed Critical Area Identification Of Soil Loss And Best Management Practices (Bmps) Evaluation, Luhua Cai Jan 2009

Development Of A Spatial Decision Support Tool For Watershed Critical Area Identification Of Soil Loss And Best Management Practices (Bmps) Evaluation, Luhua Cai

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Soil erosion has been identified as a major contributor to water quality degradation. Agriculture is historically known for accelerating soil erosion. In Iowa, with 88% of land in agriculture use, agricultural practices have became the dominant source of nonpoint source pollution and soil erosion is the leading water problem in Iowa. Controls of soil erosion are needed. Best Management Practices (BMPs) are recognized as the most efficient way to control non-point source pollution, and numerous BMPs have been developed for soil erosion control. Therefore, it is important to have a decision support tool that can identify the soil erosion problem …

Partial Order Reduction For Planning, You Xu Jan 2009

Partial Order Reduction For Planning, You Xu

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Partial Order Reduction: POR) is a technique that reduces the search space by recognizing interchangeable orders between actions and expanding only a subset of all possible orders during the search. It has been extensively studied in model checking and has proven to be an enabling technique for reducing the search space and costs. Several POR algorithms have been proposed in planning, including the Expansion Core: EC) and Stratified Planning: SP) algorithms. Being orthogonal to the development of accurate heuristic functions, these reduction methods show great potential to improve the planning efficiency from a new perspective. However, it is unclear how …

Structural Rna Homology Search And Alignment Using Covariance Models, Eric Nawrocki Jan 2009

Structural Rna Homology Search And Alignment Using Covariance Models, Eric Nawrocki

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Functional RNA elements do not encode proteins, but rather function directly as RNAs. Many different types of RNAs play important roles in a wide range of cellular processes, including protein synthesis, gene regulation, protein transport, splicing, and more. Because important sequence and structural features tend to be evolutionarily conserved, one way to learn about functional RNAs is through comparative sequence analysis - by collecting and aligning examples of homologous RNAs and comparing them. Covariance models: CMs) are powerful computational tools for homology search and alignment that score both the conserved sequence and secondary structure of an RNA family. However, due …

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Astroviruses, Stacy Finkbeiner Jan 2009

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Astroviruses, Stacy Finkbeiner

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Approximately 1.8 million children die from diarrhea annually, and millions more suffer multiple episodes of nonfatal diarrhea. Despite the availability of improved molecular diagnostics to detect the known viral agents, the etiology of a large proportion of diarrheal cases is unknown. In fact, it is estimated that no causative agent can be identified in up to 40% of sporadic cases or in gastroenteritis outbreaks. Detection of novel or unexpected viruses is the first step in identifying agents that could potentially close the diagnostic gap and pave the way for the development of more comprehensive preventative measures and better treatments. This …

A Framework For Temperature Imaging Using The Change In Backscattered Ultrasonic Signals, Yuzheng Guo Jan 2009

A Framework For Temperature Imaging Using The Change In Backscattered Ultrasonic Signals, Yuzheng Guo

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Hyperthermia is a cancer treatment that elevates tissue temperature to 40 to 43oC. It would benefit from a non-invasive, safe, inexpensive and convenient thermometry to monitor heating patterns. Ultrasound is a modality that meets these requirements. In our initial work, using both prediction and experimental data, we showed that the change in the backscattered energy: CBE) is a potential parameter for TI. CBE, however, was computed in a straightforward yet ad hoc manner. In this work, we developed and exploited a mathematical representation for our approach to TI to optimize temperature accuracy. Non-thermal effects of noise and motion confound the …

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao Jan 2009

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Signal flow in the brain is not unidirectional; feedback represents a key element in neural signal processing. To address the question on how do neural feedback loops work in terms of synapses, microcircuitry, and systems dynamics, we developed a chick midbrain slice preparation to study and characterize one important feedback loop within the avian visual system: isthmotectal feedbackloop. The isthmotectal feedback loop consists of the optic tectum: OT) and three nucleus isthmi: Imc, Ipc and SLu. The tectal layer 10 neurons project to ipsilateral Imc, Ipc and SLu in a topographic way. In turn Ipc and SLu send back topographical: …

Numerical Drag Reduction Studies On Generic Truck, Miles Bellman Jan 2009

Numerical Drag Reduction Studies On Generic Truck, Miles Bellman

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Drag reduction studies on generic truck models using passive shape optimization and active flow control are studied using numerical methods. A genetic algorithm is used to find optimal truck front shapes for reduced drag. The best shape found gives a 3.4% drag reduction. Active flow control is used to reduce drag by using oscillatory synthetic jet actuators on a generic truck body, a D-shaped bluff body, and the Ahmed body. Experimental data is available for these three configurations without and with active flow control. Actuators at the back of the trucks energize separating boundary layers and delay the shedding of …

The core competencies included in the study were, according to Bok's framework, …

A Quest For Meaning In Spontaneous Brain Activity - From Fmri To Electrophysiology To Complexity Science, Biyu He Jan 2009

A Quest For Meaning In Spontaneous Brain Activity - From Fmri To Electrophysiology To Complexity Science, Biyu He

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The brain is not a silent, complex input/output system waiting to be driven by external stimuli; instead, it is a closed, self-referential system operating on its own with sensory information modulating rather than determining its activity. Ongoing spontaneous brain activity costs the majority of the brain's energy budget, maintains the brain's functional architecture, and makes predictions about the environment and the future. I have completed three separate studies on the functional significance and the organization of spontaneous brain activity. The first study showed that strokes disrupt large-scale network coherence in the spontaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging: fMRI) signals, and that …

Characteristics Of Highly Effective Teachers: A Perspective From Students With Disabilities, David J. Smith Jan 2009

Characteristics Of Highly Effective Teachers: A Perspective From Students With Disabilities, David J. Smith

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Teacher quality is a widely discussed topic in education. States, districts, schools, parents, and other stakeholders want to know how to measure, improve, and reward teacher quality. A major factor in the rise in interest about teacher quality is clear evidence that individual teachers are able to positively affect student achievement, specifically in relationship to students' standardized test scores (No Child Left Behind Legislation). Even a cursory look at statewide student achievement data reveals that students with disabilities are achieving at lower levels in comparison to their peers without disabilities.

While several researchers have asked students to identify characteristics of …
