A Mild Method For The Cleavage Of Ketals Using Ibx, Abdul Rauf Raza
A Mild Method For The Cleavage Of Ketals Using Ibx, Abdul Rauf Raza
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Investigation on the total synthesis of batrachotoxin 1 revealed that the cyclic ketals could be cleaved to ketone with IBX in DMSO at 70-81 °C under very mild conditions. A variety of functional groups showed no interference under these conditions except vinyl bromides, which, in fact, inhibits the single electron transfer to IBX.

Thin-layer chromatography on rice starch support and aqueous ammonia--organic modifier (methanol, dioxane, and acetone) mobile phases was used to study the effect on retention of the chromatographic system and the physicochemical properties of twelve 2,4-dioxotetrahydro-1,3-thiazoles. A multivariate approach to the retention behaviour of the investigated compounds with 3 quite different organic solvents was used to explain the interactions between the 1,3-thiazoles and the mobile phases. Partial least-squares (PLS) regression was used to quantify differences between the observed data and recognize the molecular properties with the greatest effect on retention for each modifier. Good correlation was obtained between experimental and calculated …

The Use Of A Lock-In Amplifier To Stabilize The Frequency Of A Laser Diode, Jose M. Juarez
The Use Of A Lock-In Amplifier To Stabilize The Frequency Of A Laser Diode, Jose M. Juarez
College Honors Program
We have designed, constructed, and tested a lock-in amplifier with readily available electronic components and homebuilt analog circuits. Its performance is comparable to that of a commercial unit, but it costs significantly less and is much more compact. The various components of our lock-in amplifier are discussed and the basic principles behind the function and operation of this versatile device are explained. We have also assembled a laser system and used the output signal of our lock-in amplifier in a negative feedback loop to stabilize the frequency of our laser to an atomic reference frequency.

Sentiment classification concerns the use of automatic methods for predicting the orientation of subjective content on text documents, with applications on a number of areas including recommender and advertising systems, customer intelligence and information retrieval. SentiWordNet is an opinion lexicon derived from the WordNet database where each term is associated with numerical scores indicating positive and negative sentiment information. This research presents the results of applying the SentiWordNet lexical resource to the problem of automatic sentiment classification of film reviews. Our approach comprises counting positive and negative term scores to determine sentiment orientation, and an improvement is presented by building …
Gate-To-Channel Parasitic Capacitance Minimization And Source-Drain Leakage Evaluation In Germanium Pmos, Raymond T. Krom
Gate-To-Channel Parasitic Capacitance Minimization And Source-Drain Leakage Evaluation In Germanium Pmos, Raymond T. Krom
Theses
This work studies the behavior of both gate-to-channel capacitance (CGC) and source-channel-drain/well leakage in metal-gate/high-κ/Ge PMOS technology (W = 10 μm and L = 10; 5; 1 μm) under development at IMEC. The hole drift-mobility of germanium is ~4X that of silicon, leading researchers to evaluate germanium as a possible channel material replacement for PMOS expected at the 32 nm technology node. In particular this study focuses on—but is not restricted to—(1) the presence of a parasitic gate-to-channel capacitance (CGC), the large non-ideal trap assisted conductance which contributes to it, and its function versus Ge-PMOS architecture and gate length; (2) …

On The Structure Sensitivity Of Co Oxidation On Alumina Supported Pd--Pt Bimetallic Catalysts, Sarp Kaya, Ebru Erunal, Riad Shaltaf, Şi̇nasi̇ Elli̇altioğlu, Deni̇z Üner
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
CO oxidation reaction was studied over monometallic and bimetallic palladium--platinum catalysts at 25:75, 50:50, and 75:25 Pd:Pt atomic fractions co-impregnated over a \gamma -Al_2O_3 support. The size of the metal particles, measured by modified hydrogen chemisorption, increased as the Pd fractions in the catalyst increased. The surface compositions and site metal distributions of the catalysts determined from Monte Carlo simulations indicated that Pd atoms segregated to the surface: at low Pd levels, Pd occupied preferentially 6 and 7 coordinated defect-like sites. As the Pd fraction increased, first 8 coordinated (100) and then 9 coordinated (111) planes were populated. At low …

A Convenient Synthesis Of 2-Azido And 2-Thiocyanato-2,3-Unsaturated Cyclic Ketones, Mesut Boz, Ömer Zai̇m, Hi̇lal Esen
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
2-Azido and 2-thiocyanato-2,3-unsaturated ketones were synthesized by utilizing functionalization of 5- or 6-membered cycloalkane-1,2-diones, namely diosphenols, with dimethylthiocarbomoyl chloride, which activates the system towards reaction with nucleophiles in acidic conditions. Replacement of the enolic oxygen of the diosphenols with azide and thiocyanate may be achieved by treating their dimethylthiocarbamates with sodium azide or potassium thiocyanate in boiling acetonitrile/acetic acid.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Free radical photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated by 2-mercaptothioxanthone (TX-SH), thioxanthone-thioacetic acid (TXSCH_2COOH), and thioxanthone-carboxymethoxy acetic acid (TXOCH_2COOH) as so called one-component initiators was performed with and without an external magnetic field (MF). These initiators contain light-absorbing and electron/hydrogen-donating fragments in one molecule and do not require an additional hydrogen donor, and initiate the polymerization of MMA in the air. Polymerization experiments were performed in solutions with 3 different optical densities at \lambda 365 nm, where the photoinitiator absorbs. It was observed that application of MF leads to both larger conversion and higher molecular weight of the prepared PMMA, …

A Density Functional Theory Study Of Oxidation Of Benzene To Phenol By N_2o On Fe- And Co-Zsm-5 Clusters, Mehmet Ferdi̇ Fellah, Işik Önal
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out in the study of oxidation of benzene to phenol by N_2O on relaxed [(SiH_3)_4AlO_4M] (where M=Fe, Co) cluster models representing Fe- and Co-ZSM-5 surfaces. The catalytic cycle steps are completed for both Fe-ZSM-5 and Co-ZSM-5 clusters. The general trend of the results that were obtained in terms of activation barriers for the Fe-ZSM-5 cluster is in agreement with the experimental and theoretical literature. It was observed that the phenol formation step is the rate-limiting step for both clusters and Co-ZSM-5 surface has a lower activation barrier than the Fe-ZSM-5 surface (i.e. 35.82 …

2,2'-Binaphthylene Phosphorochloridite (Binol-Pcl) As A Bulky And Efficient Reagent For The Conversion Of Primary And Secondary Alcohols Into Iodides, And Tertiary Alcohols Stereo- And/Or Regioselectively Into Olefin(S), Nader Noroozi-Pesyan, Jabbar Kalaphy, Hossein Khani-Meinagh
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Primary and secondary alcohols were transformed in high yield to corresponding iodides by 4-chloro-3,5-dioxaphosphacyclohepta [2,1-\alpha; 3,4-\alpha'] dinaphthalene (BINOL-PCl) at room temperature. The tertiary alcohols formed corresponding alkenes by stereo- and/or regioselective elimination reactions. (E)-1,2-Diphenyl-1-propene and 2,3-diphenyl-1-propene were stereoselectively obtained from 1,2-diphenyl-2-propanol, as representative. No (Z)-1,2-diphenyl-1-propene was observed. 2-Methyl-1-phenylcyclopentene and 3-methyl-2-phenylcyclopentene were regioselectively obtained from 2-methyl-1-phenylcyclopentanol. ^{13}C chemical shifts for the \alpha-methylene carbon of some alkyl iodides empirically calculated through a very simple additive relationship lead to similar or even better values than the reported values. All primary alkyl iodides showed the iodine heavy atom effect on the \alpha-methylene carbon chemical …

The possible dimerization products of compounds (1-3) were calculated theoretically. Experimental and theoretical calculation showed that \delta-truxinic type dimer is the most stable isomer.
A Highly Soluble Asymmetric Perylene-Bis (Dicarboximide)-Acceptor System Incorporating A Methylene Bridged Methoxybenzene-Donor: Solvent Dependence Of Charge Transfer Interactions, Rene M. Williams
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The synthesis and photophysical properties of an asymmetrically substituted perylene-bis(dicarboximide), (PDI), system (1) containing a methylene bridged 4-methoxy-benzene donor and a solubilizing branched C_{13} alkyl chain are described. As compared to most PDIs, the fluorescence of 1 is strongly quenched in polar (but not in non-polar) solvents due to a photo-induced electron transfer process. Transient absorption spectroscopy and time resolved emission in e.g. acetonitrile indicates that upon excitation the radical anion of the PDI is formed with a rate of ca. 3.5 \times 10^9s^{-1}, and the charge transfer state has a lifetime of ca. 3 ns. Fe-PILCs via different conditions using smectites from Hancili (Turkey) and Wyoming (USA) were synthesised. Presaturation had little effects on the basal spacing values while it had important effects on thermal stabilities of the products. Products having basal spacing (d_{001}) around 1.30 nm and surface area up to 160 m^2 g^{-1} were obtained. The thermal behaviour, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption experiments confirmed that thermally stable and micro-mesoporous products were obtained although at elevated calcination temperature. Delaminated sample with basal spacing value of 2.79 nm was obtained. Surface acidity of clay was enhanced by pillaring. Chemically sorbed pyridine Fourier …

N,N-dimethyl-N' -(2-methylbenzoyl)thiourea, C_{11}H_{14}N_2SO (HL^1), N,N-dibutyl-N' -(2-methylben\-zoyl)thiourea, C{17}H{26}N2SO (HL^2), and N,N-dihexyl-N' -(2-methylbenzoyl) thiourea, C{21}H{34}N2SO (HL^3) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, NMR), and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound HL^1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c, Z = 4. Compound HL^3 also crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n, Z = 8 with 2 independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. Compound HL^2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pcnn, Z = 8. In all compounds, molecules form dimers through the strong intermolecular N-H...S hydrogen bonds. Moreover, there are different types of intra- and inter-molecular …

A series of 3-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-((4-substitutedpiperazin-1- yl)methyl)-4H-pyran-4-one structured compounds were synthesized by reacting 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one with suitable piperazine derivatives using Mannich reaction conditions. Antibacterial activities of the compounds for E. coli, S. paratyphi, S. flexneri, E. gergoviae, and M. smegmatis were assessed in vitro by using broth dilution for determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). In addition, their inhibitory effects over DNA gyrase enzyme were evaluated using a DNA gyrase supercoiling assay. Among the synthesized compounds; compound 7 showed a 4 \mu g/mL MIC value for M. smegmatis, whereas the other compounds demonstrated moderate to high activity. Those tested in the supercoiling …
