On Generalized Mersenne And Fermat Primes, Bette Catherine Putnam
On Generalized Mersenne And Fermat Primes, Bette Catherine Putnam
Honors Theses
The classical Merseniie and Fermat primes are, respectivel3^ primes of the form 2^' - 1 and 2^‘ + 1. The Mersenne primes have been studied since antiquity. It is known that if 2^ - 1 is prime then k is prime. As of September 2008, there are forty-six such primes known. Fermat primes, of the form 2^’ -h 1, seem to be more rare. It is known that if 2^' -I- 1 is prime, then k must be a power of 2. To date only 2“*^ -I- 1, 2^* -f 1, 2^^ -f-1, 2'^^ -t-1, and 2^^ -|-1 are known …

OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe unintended adverse consequences related to clinical workflow when implementing or using computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems. METHODS: We analyzed qualitative data from field observations and formal interviews gathered over a three-year period at five hospitals in three organizations. Five multidisciplinary researchers worked together to identify themes related to the impacts of CPOE systems on clinical workflow. RESULTS: CPOE systems can affect clinical work by 1) introducing or exposing human/computer interaction problems, 2) altering the pace, sequencing, and dynamics of clinical activities, 3) providing only partial support for the work activities of all types of …

Taxonomy Development And Knowledge Representation Of Nurses' Personal Cognitive Artifacts, Sharon Mclane, James P Turley
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Nurses prepare knowledge representations, or summaries of patient clinical data, each shift. These knowledge representations serve multiple purposes, including support of working memory, workload organization and prioritization, critical thinking, and reflection. This summary is integral to internal knowledge representations, working memory, and decision-making. Study of this nurse knowledge representation resulted in development of a taxonomy of knowledge representations necessary to nursing practice. This paper describes the methods used to elicit the knowledge representations and structures necessary for the work of clinical nurses, described the development of a taxonomy of this knowledge representation, and discusses translation of this methodology to the cognitive …

Where Have All The Youth Leaders Gone?, Timothy P. Nixon
180 Symposium Publications
Valuegenesis has been a tremendous tool that has given the Seventh-day Adventist church valuable information about youth and young adults. It represents a fair cross-section culturally and ethnically of our young people. However, the sample is of 16,000 respondents of Seventh-day Adventist Youth in Seventh-day Adventist schools throughout the North American Division during the 2000 school year (Gillespie, 2004). The majority of the expenses are borne by local parents and churches (Gillespie, 2004). Sixty percent of the students said there was a youth pastor at their home church (Gillespie, 2004). Monte Sahlin’s work in Adventist Congregations Today, says most Adventist …

A Versatile Synthesis Of Electroactive Stilbenoprismands For Effective Binding Of Metal Cations, Sergey V. Lindeman, Rajendra Rathore, Paromita Debroy
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
A versatile synthesis of a new class of polyaromatic receptors (stilbenoprismands) containing a Δ-shaped cavity similar to that of the π-prismand together with an intimately coupled electroactive stilbenoid moiety was accomplished via an efficient intramolecular McMurry coupling reaction. The presence of the Δ-shaped cavity in stilbenoprismands allows an efficient binding of a single silver cation as probed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Electron-rich stilbenoprismands undergo a ready oxidation to their highly robust cation−radical and dicationic salts. X-ray structure determination of a representative dicationic stilbenoprismand showed that the charges were largely localized on the tetraarylethylene moiety, which results in a twisting …

Tall Fescue (Lolium Arundinaceum (Schreb.) S.J. Darbyshire) Cultivar Performance In The Central California Coastal Region, Seril Shimizu
Master's Theses
Tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) S.J. Darbyshire) has long been known as a turfgrass that utilizes lower levels of inputs than most other cool season turfgrasses (Turgeon, 2005). In recent years, turf breeders have been selecting for cultivars of tall fescue that have finer leaf textures. As the use of tall fescue expands, consumers want to now what cultivar to use and how to manage it. This study looked at 18 tall fescue cultivars grown at two mowing heights of five and 10 centimeters and evaluated plant quality based on stand density, leaf texture, and genetic plant color. In the …

The promise of pharmacogenomics depends on advancing predictive medicine. To address this need in the area of immunology, we developed the individualized T cell epitope measure (iTEM) tool to estimate an individual's T cell response to a protein antigen based on HLA binding predictions. In this study, we validated prospective iTEM predictions using data from in vitro and in vivo studies. We used a mathematical formula that converts DRB1 allele binding predictions generated by EpiMatrix, an epitope-mapping tool, into an allele-specific scoring system. We then demonstrated that iTEM can be used to define an HLA binding threshold above which immune …

Arabidopsis Thaliana Glx2-1 Contains A Dinuclear Metal Binding Site, But Is Not A Glyoxalase 2, Pattraranee Limphong, Michael W. Crowder, Brian Bennett, Christopher A. Makaroff
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
In an effort to probe the structure and function of a predicted mitochondrial glyoxalase 2, GLX2-1, from Arabidopsis thaliana, GLX2-1 was cloned, overexpressed, purified and characterized using metal analyses, kinetics, and UV–visible, EPR, and 1H-NMR spectroscopies. The purified enzyme was purple and contained substoichiometric amounts of iron and zinc; however, metal-binding studies reveal that GLX2-1 can bind nearly two equivalents of either iron or zinc and that the most stable analogue of GLX2-1 is the iron-containing form. UV–visible spectra of the purified enzyme suggest the presence of Fe(II) in the protein, but the Fe(II) can be oxidized over …
Dependence Of Domain Wall Structure For Low Field Injection Into Magnetic Nanowires, Andrew Kunz, Sarah C. Reiff
Dependence Of Domain Wall Structure For Low Field Injection Into Magnetic Nanowires, Andrew Kunz, Sarah C. Reiff
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
Micromagnetic simulation is used to model the injection of a domain wall into a magnetic nanowire with field strengths less than the so-called Walker field. This ensures fast, reliable motion of the wall. When the wire is located at the edge of a small injecting disk, a bias field used to control the orientation of the domain wall can reduce the pinning potential of the structure. The low field injection is explained by a simple model, which relies on the topological nature of a domain wall. The technique can quickly inject multiple domain walls with a known magnetic structure.

The Experiences Of Women Who Live With An Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (Lcd), Jenea Mary Smith
The Experiences Of Women Who Live With An Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (Lcd), Jenea Mary Smith
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (lCD) is the most effective treatment available for terminating potentially life-threatening ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. The lCD detects and attempts to correct these arrhythmias by pacing, cardioversion, and defibrillation thereby providing lifesaving therapy to patients at risk for sudden cardiac death. Currently, 150,000 Americans receive ICDs each year. Although most lCD recipients are men, more women are now qualifying for insertion (Stutts, Cross, Conti, & Sears, 2007).
Despite its established health benefits, lCD implantation is accompanied by psychological factors which merit research attention. This study investigated the experiences of women who live an lCD. The …
Arrow’S Theorem And The Exclusive Shareholder Franchise, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew Bodie
Arrow’S Theorem And The Exclusive Shareholder Franchise, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew Bodie
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
In this Essay, we contest one of the main arguments for restricting corporate board voting to shareholders. In justifying the limitation of the franchise to shareholders, scholars have repeatedly turned to social choice theory — specifically, Arrow's theorem — to justify the exclusive shareholder franchise. Citing to the theorem, corporate law commentators have argued that lumping different groups of stakeholders together into the electorate would result in a lack of consensus and, ultimately, the lack of coherence that attends intransitive social choices, perhaps even leading the corporation to self-destruct. We contend that this argument is misguided. First, we argue that …

Changes In A Tropical Forest Support Metabolic Zero-Sum Dynamics, S.K. Morgan Ernest, Ethan P. White, J. H. Brown
Biology Faculty Publications
Major shifts in many ecosystem-level properties of tropical forests have been observed, but the processes driving these changes are poorly understood. Over the past two decades, the forest on Barro Colorado Island, Panama (BCI) exhibited a 20% decrease in the number of trees and a 10% increase in average tree diameter. Here we show that these changes are consistent with a zero-sum constraint operating in this forest. Zero-sum constraints result when the total resource use of an ecosystem is limited by available resources. This causes increases in resource use by some groups of organisms to be compensated for by decreases …

The species abundance distribution is one of the few “universal” patterns in ecology. Research on this fundamental distribution has been focused to the study of numerical counts, irrespective of the traits of individuals. Here we show that considering a set of Generalized Species Abundance Distributions (GSADs) that encompass several abundance measures, specifically numerical abundance, biomass and resource use can provide novel insights into organizational forces at play in ecological communities. We first leverage a comprehensive dataset to investigate the similarity and difference between GSADs. We then use classical probability theory and allometric scaling laws to explore theoretical linkages among GSADs …

Intrusion Detection And Prevention System: Cgi Attacks, Tejinder Aulakh
Master's Projects
Over the past decade, the popularity of the Internet has been on the rise. The Internet is being used by its clients to access both static and dynamic data residing on remote servers. In the client-server interaction, the client asks the server to provide information, and, in addition, the server may also request that clients provide information such as in “web forms.” Therefore, the Internet is being used for many different purposes which also include the web servers collecting the information from the clients. Consequently, attacks on the web servers have been increasing over the years. Due to the fact …

Heuristic Search Cryptanalysis Of The Zodiac 340 Cipher, Pallavi Kanagalakatte Basavaraju
Master's Projects
The Zodiac 340 cipher is one of the most famous unsolved ciphers of all time. It was allegedly written by “the Zodiac”, whose identity remains unknown to date. The Zodiac was a serial killer who killed a number of people in and around the San Francisco Bay area during the 1960s. He is confirmed to have seven victims, two of whom survived [1], although in taunting letters to the news media he claims to have killed 37 people. During this time, an encrypted message known as the Zodiac 408 cipher was mailed to 3 different newspapers in the San Francisco …
