Secondary National Board Candidates And Attitudes Toward Assessment: A Qualitative Study, Vincent Aleccia Jan 2009

Secondary National Board Candidates And Attitudes Toward Assessment: A Qualitative Study, Vincent Aleccia

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This study investigated the impact that National Board certification had on the assessment practice of secondary candidates in Eastern Washington. The study was framed by three research questions: (a) To what extent do National Board candidates think about the place of assessment in their classroom practice before they begin the process? (b) Does the National Board certification process impact their beliefs about assessment so that they see assessment in a different light by the time they complete the process? (c) Do teachers who have undergone the National Board certification process change the type of assessments used in their classroom practice …

The Relationship Between Student Outcomes And Parental Involvement In Multidisciplinary Iep Team Meetings, David M. Poponi Jan 2009

The Relationship Between Student Outcomes And Parental Involvement In Multidisciplinary Iep Team Meetings, David M. Poponi

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires that each special education student has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) developed at least once every year. In addition to school staff, regulations require that parents be invited to the IEP meetings. This study retrospectively reviewed the records of 270 students with educational disabilities in grades six through twelve. Demographic and descriptive data were gathered for each student and were separated according to whether the parent did or did not attend the IEP meeting. End-of-year information was examined regarding final report card grades, absenteeism, and cumulative days of detentions and suspensions. Of these …

Beliefs And Practices Of Expert Respiratory Care Faculty On Critical-Thinking Learning: A Case Study, James Leland Hulse Jan 2009

Beliefs And Practices Of Expert Respiratory Care Faculty On Critical-Thinking Learning: A Case Study, James Leland Hulse

Dissertations

Problem. The development of critical-thinking skills during the professional training of respiratory therapists is imperative for good practice. Research evidence suggests that interactive instructional strategies are far more effective than traditional lectures. Missing from the literature are thick descriptions of how faculty organize the delivery of respiratory therapy curriculum to develop critical thinking. This case study describes the beliefs and practices of faculty members in an academically strong program in view of developing critical thinking.

Method. A qualitative, single case-study design was used to identify critical-thinking strategies and beliefs incorporated by the faculty. The program was nominated by expert members …

Historical Geography Of Yellagonga Regional Park, Western Australia, Susan Ujma Jan 2009

Historical Geography Of Yellagonga Regional Park, Western Australia, Susan Ujma

Theses : Honours

The principle aim of this study was to reconstruct the land use history of the Yellagonga Regional Park wetland landscape. Located approximately twenty kilometres north of Perth, covering about 1400 hectares, the Park lies within the North-West Corridor of the metropolitan area. This research, assisted by archival sources, demonstrates that prior to early European settlement the Yellagonga wetlands were quintessential summer hunting and gathering sites for the Nyoongar Aboriginal people. The wetlands were utilised for water, food gathering, hunting, corroborees and rituals that governed their tribal lives. Early European settlers, market gardeners, and later subdivision for urban development, have adversely …

Groups As Graphs, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2009

Groups As Graphs, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Through this book, for the first time we represent every finite group in the form of a graph. The authors choose to call these graphs as identity graph, since the main role in obtaining the graph is played by the identity element of the group. This study is innovative because through this description one can immediately look at the graph and say the number of elements in the group G which are self-inversed. Also study of different properties like the subgroups of a group, normal subgroups of a group, p-sylow subgroups of a group and conjugate elements of a group …

Advances And Applications Of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (Dsmt) For Information Fusion (Collected Works), Vol. 3, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This volume has about 760 pages, split into 25 chapters, from 41 contributors. First part of this book presents advances of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) which is becoming one of the most comprehensive and flexible fusion theory based on belief functions. It can work in all fusion spaces: power set, hyper-power set, and super-power set, and has various fusion and conditioning rules that can be applied depending on each application. Some new generalized rules are introduced in this volume with codes for implementing some of them. For the qualitative fusion, the DSm Field and Linear Algebra of Refined Labels (FLARL) is …

Heavenly Genes: Eugenics And The New Woman In Fin De Siecle England., Jane V. Rago

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1886 the Contagious Diseases Acts were repealed after a long sixteen year fight, led by social reformers and what would later come to be known as the first wave of feminism. Western feminism was born and bred in large part out of the debates sparked by the Contagious Diseases Acts, debates that opened up into the appeal for women to be granted full citizenship through the right to vote, to own property after marriage, and the right to education and employment outside the home. The crux of this argument was grounded in a critique of mid-Victorian ideology of separate …

Sojourners In Mexico With U.S. School Experience: A New Taxonomy For Transnational Students, Víctor Zúñiga, Edmund T. Hamann Jan 2009

Sojourners In Mexico With U.S. School Experience: A New Taxonomy For Transnational Students, Víctor Zúñiga, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

There are many school-age children involved in the transnational movement of peoples between the United States and Mexico. Among those currently in Mexico (typically regarded as a sending country rather than a receiving country), most expect to return to the United States someday, although not necessarily permanently, and they variously identify as Mexican, Mexican American, or American. This suggests that the prospect of enduring geographic mobility affects the complicated work of identity formation and affiliation. Central to this negotiation are Mexican schools, which, like U.S. schools, are not deliberately designed to consider the needs, understandings, and wants of an increasingly …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In contrast to current education policies that conceptualize pupil learning largely in terms of standardized exam scores, we offer an alternative view, one that conceives of pupil learning as a source of insight for pupils and teachers alike. Drawing on survey data and a qualitative study of the teacher candidate experience, we explore the allowing questions: In a teacher education program committed to promoting social justice, embracing an inquiry-into-practice stance, and affirming diversity by meeting the needs of diverse learners, how do teacher candidates assess pupil learning, in particular, how are their assessments influenced by these program themes? Further, how …

Life Stories Of Selected Adults With Learning Disabilities: How They Come To Understand And Choose To Reveal Their Disabilities, Christine M. Sampson Jan 2009

Life Stories Of Selected Adults With Learning Disabilities: How They Come To Understand And Choose To Reveal Their Disabilities, Christine M. Sampson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adults with learning disabilities continue to be impacted by their disabilities throughout their lives. Once they exit formal education, the disclosure of the disability becomes a personal choice. Previous research proposes that although the effects of disabilities are present in the workplace, individuals with learning disabilities are hesitant to disclose their disabilities or request accommodations. Ten adults with learning disabilities were interviewed for this qualitative study to determine how individuals with learning disabilities come to understand and disclose their disabilities. The results suggest that the understanding of what a learning disability means is based upon several factors including the words …

Risk Analysis In Biometric-Based Border Inspection System, Mayra A. Sacanamboy Franco Jan 2009

Risk Analysis In Biometric-Based Border Inspection System, Mayra A. Sacanamboy Franco

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The main goal of a Border Inspection System is to prevent the entry of individuals who pose a threat to a country. The entry of just one of these persons could have severe consequences. Nevertheless, performing a lengthy border inspection is not possible, given that 240,737 international passengers enter the country in an average day [5]. For this reason, the primary inspection is performed using biometrics traits and information flow processes that have a low false acceptance rate and have a high throughput.;This thesis uses the analytic modeling tool called LQNS (Layered Queueing Network Solver) to solve open models for …

A Faster Algorithm For The Single Source Shortest Path Problem With Few Distinct Positive Lengths, Matthew D. Williamson Jan 2009

A Faster Algorithm For The Single Source Shortest Path Problem With Few Distinct Positive Lengths, Matthew D. Williamson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis proposes an algorithm that involves Dijkstra's algorithm to solve the Single Source Shortest Path Problem in a graph where the length of each edge is positive, and the specific case where there is a distinct number of possible lengths. Given a graph where there are n vertices, m edges, and K distinct edge lengths, the proposed algorithm runs in O(m ) time if nK ≤ 2m and O(m log nKm ) time if nK > 2m. The algorithm is tested and compared with some of the fastest algorithms for the Single Source Shortest Path Problem for graphs with arbitrary …
