Blame And Medical Errors: Allocation Of Blame For Medical Errors Among Physicians, Nurses And Administrators At An Academic Medical Center, Stephen Elliot Gordon Nov 2009

Blame And Medical Errors: Allocation Of Blame For Medical Errors Among Physicians, Nurses And Administrators At An Academic Medical Center, Stephen Elliot Gordon

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Despite significant efforts among health care leaders in the past two decades to move away from the so-called culture of blame, individual blame for medical errors is still a significant presence in health care settings. Furthermore, little is understood about how individual people assign blame, and what differences, if any, exist between different health care professionals in how they assign individual blame. The study tested three hypotheses regarding the allocation of blame for medical errors. Hypothesis #1: Despite a shift towards systems-based thinking, health care professionals will blame individuals rather than the system for medical errors. Hypothesis #2: Even when …

Electron Drift Directions In Strong-Field Double Ionization Of Atoms, Stanley L. Haan, Z. S. Smith, K. N. Shomsky, P. W. Plantinga Nov 2009

Electron Drift Directions In Strong-Field Double Ionization Of Atoms, Stanley L. Haan, Z. S. Smith, K. N. Shomsky, P. W. Plantinga

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Longitudinal momentum spectra and electron drift directions are considered for several laser wavelengths in non-sequential double ionization of helium using three-dimensional classical ensembles. In this model, the familiar doublet for wavelength 800 nm and intensities of order 5 × 1014 W cm-2 becomes a triplet for wavelength 1314 nm, then a doublet for 2017 nm. The results are explained based on whether the post-ionization impulse from the laser results in backward drift for one or both electrons.

Impact Of High Frequency Waves On The Ocean Altimeter Range Bias, Douglas C. Vandemark, Bertrand Chapron, T. Elfouhaily, J. W. Campbell Nov 2009

Impact Of High Frequency Waves On The Ocean Altimeter Range Bias, Douglas C. Vandemark, Bertrand Chapron, T. Elfouhaily, J. W. Campbell

Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory

New aircraft observations are presented on the range determination error in satellite altimetry associated with ocean waves. Laser-based measurements of the cross correlation between the gravity wave slope and elevation are reported for the first time. These observations provide direct access to a long, O(10 m), gravity wave statistic central to nonlinear wave theory prediction of the altimeter sea state bias. Coincident Ka-band radar scattering data are used to estimate an electromagnetic (EM) range bias analogous to that in satellite altimetry. These data, along with ancillary wind and wave slope variance estimates, are used alongside existing theory to evaluate …

The deployment of thousands of wind energy facilities required to meet various renewable energy targets will bring changes to the nation’s landscapes, communities, and economies. Identifying and reconciling the trade-offs that inevitably arise from projects such as locating wind energy facilities is a major challenge to successfully meeting renewable energy targets. These complex challenges span scientific disciplines, involve multiple scales, lack well-defined solutions, and involve public values. Integrated assessment has been used effectively to address a number of complex challenges, ranging from climate change to “dead zones” in the Gulf of Mexico. The intent of this integrated assessment project, and …

Self-Efficacy And Instruction In Mathematics, Juana Patricia Ordóñez-Feliciano Nov 2009

Self-Efficacy And Instruction In Mathematics, Juana Patricia Ordóñez-Feliciano

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

According to the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (2008) differences in students' mathematical achievement were attributed to differences in teacher characteristics, including the use of instructional methods and their self-efficacy beliefs. Concurrently, today's mathematics teachers face challenges arising from Federal and State mandates requiring students' proficiency to improve on standardized tests. This study considered the relationship between two characteristics, mathematics teachers' self-efficacy and their choice of instructional strategies. Further, the relationship between teachers' self-efficacy and their demographic characteristics as measured by a researcher-developed questionnaire was explored.

The researcher utilized the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale (TSES) and the Teachers' Instructional Practices Survey (TIPS), …

Mathematics Education: The Voice Of African American And White Adolescents, Sharondrea R. King Nov 2009

Mathematics Education: The Voice Of African American And White Adolescents, Sharondrea R. King

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Several studies have provided evidence regarding factors that contribute to the mathematics achievement gap between African American and White students. Byrnes (2003) found that 45%-50% of the difference in White and African American students' performance in mathematics was associated with socioeconomic status, exposure to learning opportunities, and motivational aspects of math while 4.5% was explained by ethnicity. The goal in this mixed method study was to examine the mathematics attitude of African American (n = 22) and White (n = 10) high school students and to allow students to voice what practices and supports they perceived enabled them to learn …

The Relationship Between Teacher Efficacy And Multiple Learning Competencies With Arts And Non-Arts Educators, Lavinia Hallowell Draper Nov 2009

The Relationship Between Teacher Efficacy And Multiple Learning Competencies With Arts And Non-Arts Educators, Lavinia Hallowell Draper

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The National Commission on Excellence in Education (1983) published A Nation at Risk to relay the academic performance level of American students. The results revealed that Americans students were performing considerably below other countries. Consequently, accountability through testing became the focus for policy makers to promote educational reform and educational equality (Linn, 2000). The focus on testing, however, has hindered student achievement and led to more (a) social promotion; (b) remedial courses; (c) retention rates; (d) teachers leaving the field; (e) dropout rates; and (f) invalid achievement results (Hoffinan, 2001).

As more schools have reassigned staff members to meet the …

Computer Crime And Identity Theft, Harry A. Hunter Nov 2009

Computer Crime And Identity Theft, Harry A. Hunter

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The problem at hand is the increased amount of vulnerabilities and security hazards for individuals engaging in e-commerce, business transactions over the World Wide Web. Since the majority of people aren't paying their bills by mailing in their payment to the vendor, they pay for the items they purchase online, which makes them open to hackers and social engineering attacks. They place their credit card/debit card numbers, their phone number and home address, and even their birth date information on company websites. All these security vulnerabilities make the risk of identity theft increasingly high. Identity theft is when an individual's …

Complementary Lidstone Interpolation And Boundary Value Problems, Ravi P. Agarwal, Sandra Pinelas, Patricia J.Y. Wong Nov 2009

Complementary Lidstone Interpolation And Boundary Value Problems, Ravi P. Agarwal, Sandra Pinelas, Patricia J.Y. Wong

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We shall introduce and construct explicitly the complementary Lidstone interpolating polynomial P 2m (t) of degree 2m, which involves interpolating data at the odd-order derivatives. For P 2m (t) we will provide explicit representation of the error function, best possible error inequalities, best possible criterion for the convergence of complementary Lidstone series, and a quadrature formula with best possible error bound. Then, these results will be used to establish existence and uniqueness criteria, and the convergence of Picard's, approximate Picard's, quasilinearization, and approximate quasilinearization iterative methods for the complementary Lidstone boundary value problems which consist of a (2m+1) th order …

Hyperspectral Clustering And Unmixing Of Satellite Imagery For The Study Of Complex Society State Formation, Justin Kwong Nov 2009

Hyperspectral Clustering And Unmixing Of Satellite Imagery For The Study Of Complex Society State Formation, Justin Kwong

Theses

This project is an application of remote sensing techniques to the field of archaeology. Clustering and unmixing algorithms are applied to hyperspectral Hyperion imagery over Oaxaca, Mexico. Oaxaca is the birthplace of the Zapotec civilization, the earliest state-level society in Mesoamerica. A passionate debate is ongoing over whether the Zapotecs' evolution was environmentally deterministic or socioeconomic. Previous archaeological remote sensing has focused on the difficult tasks of feature detection using low spatial resolution imagery or visual inspection of spectral data. This project attempts to learn about a civilization on the macro level, using unsupervised land classification techniques. Overlapping 158 band …

Investigation Of The Factors Influencing Skid Resistance And The International Friction Index, Luis G. Fuentes Nov 2009

Investigation Of The Factors Influencing Skid Resistance And The International Friction Index, Luis G. Fuentes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is compiled of the findings of several phases of a detailed research study that was aimed at investigating the Skid Resistance phenomenon. In the first phase of the dissertation research a study was performed to evaluate the different factors that influence frictional measurements obtained using the Dynamic Friction Tester (DFT). A temperature calibration factor that would account for temperature effects on DFT readings and IFI computations was developed. In addition, other variables that also affect the friction measurements obtained using the DFT are identified. In the next phase of the dissertation research the effect of pavement roughness on …

Comparison Of Alpha-Element-Enhanced Simple Stellar Population Models With Milky Way Globular Clusters, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, Aaron Dotter Nov 2009

Comparison Of Alpha-Element-Enhanced Simple Stellar Population Models With Milky Way Globular Clusters, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, Aaron Dotter

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present simple stellar population (SSP) models with scaled-solar and α-element-enhanced abundances. The SSP models are based on the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database, our library of synthetic stellar spectra, and a detailed systematic variation of horizontal-branch (HB) morphology with age and metallicity. In order to test the relative importance of a variety of SSP model ingredients, we compare our SSP models with integrated spectra of 41 Milky Way globular clusters (MWGCs) from Schiavon etal. Using the Mg b and Ca4227 indices, we confirm that Mg and Ca are enhanced by about +0.4 and +0.2dex, respectively, in agreement with results from …

Comparison Of Line-Peak And Line-Scanning Excitation In Two-Color Laser-Induced-Fluorescence Thermometry Of Oh, Stanislav Kostka, Sukesh Roy, Patrick J. Lakusta, Terrence Meyer, Michael W. Renfro, James R. Gord, Richard D. Branam Nov 2009

Comparison Of Line-Peak And Line-Scanning Excitation In Two-Color Laser-Induced-Fluorescence Thermometry Of Oh, Stanislav Kostka, Sukesh Roy, Patrick J. Lakusta, Terrence Meyer, Michael W. Renfro, James R. Gord, Richard D. Branam

Faculty Publications

Two-line laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) thermometry is commonly employed to generate instantaneous planar maps of temperature in unsteady flames. The use of line scanning to extract the ratio of integrated intensities is less common because it precludes instantaneous measurements. Recent advances in the energy output of high-speed, ultraviolet, optical parameter oscillators have made possible the rapid scanning of molecular rovibrational transitions and, hence, the potential to extract information on gas-phase temperatures. In the current study, two-line OH LIF thermometry is performed in a well-calibrated reacting flow for the purpose of comparing the relative accuracy of various line-pair selections from the literature and …

Tracing The Archetypal Academic Librarian, Stephen E. Bales Nov 2009

Tracing The Archetypal Academic Librarian, Stephen E. Bales

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper analyzes the available evidence to develop a model of the archetypal academic librarian. It compares three periods to do so: (1) pre-Alexandrian Mesopotamian information institutions, focusing on the seventh century BCE Library of Assurbanipal (considered by many scholars to be the first universal or national library), (2) the Great Library of Alexandria (hereafter referred to as “the Library”), and (3) the twenty-first century American academic library. While the basic functions of the librarian have remained constant over thousands of years, one critical element, however, is missing as an integral element of modern academic librarianship, the creation of new …

Sums Of Two Squares And Almost Squares, Tsz Ho Chan Nov 2009

Sums Of Two Squares And Almost Squares, Tsz Ho Chan

Algebra/Number Theory Seminar

Sums of two squares are integers of the form n = a2 + b2.Almost squares are integers of the form n = ab where a and b are close to each other. In this talk, we will discuss the following question: what are the nearest sums of two squares and almost squares to any given positive real number α? This turns out to be related to the distribution of n2α (mod 1).

The Surface Relaxation And Band Structure Of Mo(112), Ning Wu, Ya. B. Losovyj, Zhaoxian Yu, Renat F. Sabirianov, Wai-Ning Mei, N. Lozova, J. A. Colón Santana, Peter Dowben Nov 2009

The Surface Relaxation And Band Structure Of Mo(112), Ning Wu, Ya. B. Losovyj, Zhaoxian Yu, Renat F. Sabirianov, Wai-Ning Mei, N. Lozova, J. A. Colón Santana, Peter Dowben

Physics Faculty Publications

The experimental and theoretical surface band structures of Mo(112) are compared. This surface band structure mapping is presented with corrections included for the lattice relaxation of the Mo(112) surface. Quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED) has been used to determine the details of the Mo(112) surface structure. The first layer contraction is 14.9% by LEED intensity versus voltage analysis and is in general agreement with the 17.6% contraction found from total surface energy optimization. The electronic band structure is mapped out along ¯– ¯ X and ¯–¯Y of the surface Brillouin zone (SBZ). There is strong evidence of electron–phonon coupling …
