HCBE Faculty Articles
In Iran, management and leadership trends can be traced back for thousands of years of experience. This study focused on the management skills of respondents from Iran to see if gender, age and longevity in management can be significant factors in their technical, human and conceptual competencies. The results of 421 respondents show that there are significant differences linked to gender, age, and management experience. Age and management experience are positively related to better technical, human and conceptual scores. Implications for educators, managers, and human resource professionals are presented.
Promoting The Development Of Creativity In Students, Amy M. Anderson
Promoting The Development Of Creativity In Students, Amy M. Anderson
Graduate Research Papers
Creativity may contribute to student success in each of ASCA's key areas of student development: career, academic, and personal-social. However, the wide range of theoretical constructs of creativity may impede school counselors seeking methods for supporting creative development. This literature review explores various definitions of creativity and suggests a recently proposed developmental model may be most useful to school counselors in conceptualizing all students as creative and capable of growth. Using this model, the paper examines research into factors influencing creativity, including personality, self-efficacy, appropriate feedback, the perception of judgment, mood and affect, and motivation, and suggests practical ways school …
Struggling, Coping, And Thriving: Sense-Making In Stepfamily Couples' Narratives About Coparenting, Andrea L. Smith Sisk
Struggling, Coping, And Thriving: Sense-Making In Stepfamily Couples' Narratives About Coparenting, Andrea L. Smith Sisk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term coparenting implies a bioparental dyad that often excludes the stepparent's role in sharing parenting across joint-custody households. Focusing solely on this dyad also precludes gaining an understanding of how stepfamily couples manage together the communication and sharing of parental responsibilities with the parent(s) in the shared children's other home. In a departure from this bioparental dyad-focused approach, this study locates the stepfamily couple at the center of an inquiry into managing coparenting across households. This mixed methods design study included in-depth interviews of 32 stepfamily couples whose narratives about coparenting were analyzed using grounded theory methods. Forty-one percent …
Which Is To Be Master, The Judiciary Or The Legislature? When Statutory Directives Violate Separation Of Powers, Linda Jellum
Which Is To Be Master, The Judiciary Or The Legislature? When Statutory Directives Violate Separation Of Powers, Linda Jellum
Articles
Statutory interpretation is at the cutting edge of legal scholarship and, now, legislative activity. As legislatures have increasingly begun to perceive judges as activist meddlers, some legislatures have found a creative solution to the perceived control problem: statutory directives. Statutory directives, simply put, tell judges how to interpret statutes. Rather than wait for an interpretation with which they disagree, legislatures use statutory directives to control judicial interpretation. Legislatures are constitutionally empowered to draft statutes. In doing so, legislatures expect to control the meaning of the words they choose. Moreover, they prefer to do so early in the process, not after …

Who Owns This Text?: Plagiarism, Authorship, And Disciplinary Cultures, Carol Petersen Haviland, Joan A. Mullin
Who Owns This Text?: Plagiarism, Authorship, And Disciplinary Cultures, Carol Petersen Haviland, Joan A. Mullin
All USU Press Publications
Carol Haviland, Joan Mullin, and their collaborators report on a three-year interdisciplinary interview project on the subject of plagiarism, authorship, and "property," and how these are conceived across different fields. The study investigated seven different academic fields to discover disciplinary conceptions of what types of scholarly production count as "owned." Less a research report than a conversation, the book offers a wide range of ideas, and the chapters here will provoke discussion on scholarly practice relating to intellectual property, plagiarism, and authorship---and to how these matters are conveyed to students. Although these authors find a good deal of consensus in …
Folklore And The Internet: Vernacular Expression In A Digital World, Trevor J. Blank
Folklore And The Internet: Vernacular Expression In A Digital World, Trevor J. Blank
All USU Press Publications
Folklore and the Internet is a pioneering examination of the folkloric qualities of the World Wide Web, e-mail, and related digital media. It shows that folk culture, sustained by a new and evolving vernacular, has been a key, since the Internetýs beginnings, to language, practice, and interaction online. Users of many sorts continue to develop the Internet as a significant medium for generating, transmitting, documenting, and preserving folklore. In a set of new, insightful essays, contributors Trevor J. Blank, Simon J. Bronner, Robert Dobler, Russell Frank, Gregory Hansen, Robert Glenn Howard, Lynne S. McNeill, Elizabeth Tucker, and William Westerman showcase …

Annotating A Corpus Of Biomedical Research Texts: Two Models Of Rhetorical Analysis, Barbara Ellen White
Digitized Theses
Recent advances in the biomedical sciences have led to an enormous increase in the amount of research literature being published, most of it in electronic form; researchers are finding it difficult to keep up-to-date on all of the new developments in their fields. As a result there is a need to develop automated Text Mining tools to filter and organize data in a way which is useful to researchers. Human-annotated data are often used as the ‘gold standard’ to train such systems via machine learning methods.
This thesis reports on a project where three annotators applied two Models of rhetoric …

N-Subword Complexity Measure Of Dna Sequences, Noman Shihadeh
N-Subword Complexity Measure Of Dna Sequences, Noman Shihadeh
Digitized Theses
String complexity has many definitions: Kolmogorov complexity [30]; Lempel-Ziv complexity [14] [27]; Linguistic complexity [42], Subword complexity [10] etc. In this thesis we will consider the n-subword complexity studied in [2] and [13]. The n-subword complexity Pw(n) of a genomic sequence w was defined in [13] as the number of distinct factors (subwords) of length n that occur in w. In [2] a new measure called the n-subword deficit was defined as the difference between the number of subwords of length n of a genomic sequence w and of a random genomic sequence of the same length. This definition was …
The Traditional Knowledge Protection Debate: Identifying And Listening To The Voices Of Traditional Knowledge Holders, Charles Kamau Maina
The Traditional Knowledge Protection Debate: Identifying And Listening To The Voices Of Traditional Knowledge Holders, Charles Kamau Maina
Digitized Theses
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared 1995-2004 an International Decade of the World's Indigenous People and subsequently declared 20052014 another such decade. These declarations challenged governments and the international community to address issues, such as protection of traditional knowledge, affecting indigenous communities. This study analyses the debate on protecting traditional knowledge and tests how well international level proposals mirror grassroots perspectives of knowledge-holders. Two kinds of qualitative evidence are used: first, documentary texts generated in the various international forums were analyzed, using thematic text analysis, and, second, semi-structured interviews were conducted with elders across communities representing four linguistically …

Discussions of the contested politics of academic fields that have emerged from social movements often emphasize course content while deemphasizing the ways that power circulates through specific sites in the academy. Certainly women's studies, queer studies, and the different ethnic studies fields have struggled to maintain links to the social movements that engendered them. and a concomitant focus on social change. In a more complex fashion, the same is true of postcolonial studies. Similarly, cultural studies may be understood as an academic field emerging from class-based social movements that are affiliated in complex ways with various Marxist analyses whose academic …

Competence Theories, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This entry explores theories of communication competence from psychological, social, and critical perspectives respectively. Although each perspective shows incompatible differences on their orientation to studying communication competence, it is necessary to examine the common themes that cut across these differences, because to reach communication competence is an important educational objective. These common themes, based on the criteria of effectiveness and appropriateness and served as valid empirical indicators, dictate that communication competence should be comprised of three dimensions of cognitive, affective, and behavioral abilities.

Hello Kitty Goes To College: Poems About Harassment In The Academy, Sandra L. Faulkner, Bernadette Marie Calafell, Diane Susan Grimes
Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Faculty Scholarship
This essay presents a series of poems that fictionalize professors’ and students’ experiences and narratives of sexual harassment in the academy through the use of the cartoon character, Hello Kitty. The poems demonstrate administrative and fellow professors’ reactions to the standpoints of women of color, untenured professors, and students that experience harassment. The essay argues that a fictional account is necessary to represent these experiences given the academy’s prevalent power structure. The use of feminist and critical race theory places the poems in the context of the harassment literature and demonstrates how reactions to the presentation of standpoints are an …

This study examined an inner-city Catholic high school to ascertain the possible existence of an achievement gap. Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses examined academic indicators (GPA and Math and Science OGT results) and demographic and school variables. Students (258 Black, 101 White, and 55 Hispanic) completed questionnaires, which were matched with school data and confirmatory alumni focus groups. Analyses revealed no significant differences (ANOVA) among academic indicator means. Correlations were found between academic indicators and length of Catholic education, good behavior, extracurricular participation, high-school-graduation-oriented peers, and teacher caring scores. Regression models found positive student behavior, peers, female gender, extracurricular …

The integral sentence completion test (SCTi) was developed by Susanne Cook-Greuter in 1999. Her SCTi was a revision of the Washington University Sentence Completion Test devised by Jane Loevinger in 1970 and revised in 1985 and again in 1996. The test was devised to measure one's level of ego development by providing 36 stems and asking respondents to complete the sentence stems with whatever comes to their mind. Because the test is semi-projective, the scoring process requires training and familiarity with the test and with the concept of ego development. Jane Loevinger devised a scoring system complete with rules. She …
Genre And Gender In Charles Bukowski's Notes Of A Dirty Old Man, Kallisto J. Vimr
Genre And Gender In Charles Bukowski's Notes Of A Dirty Old Man, Kallisto J. Vimr
ETD Archive
Charles Bukowski's notes of a dirty old man is a genre-blurring, gender-blending "start" to the perpetual "work-in-progress" that constitutes his oeuvre. Bukowski's genre heterogeneity provides a literal shape-shifting that allows the Bukowski-character to experiment with his a fluid, indeterminate subjectivity, helping unravel the tight myth that binds him as a "dirty old man." Examining one of the vignettes in the book, the column recounting Bukowski meeting Neal Cassady, showcases Bukowski's engagement with autobiography and creative nonfiction in order to respond to constructions of verisimilitude this is inextricably linked to other organized constructions Bukowski must work in--or out from--namely the hierarchy …

Examining The Role Of Talker-Specific Details In The Perception Of Words Spoken By Famous Talkers, Alisa M. Maibauer
ETD Archive
Previous work demonstrates that talker-specific details tend to affect language perception relatively late in processing. One possible explanation for this time-course effect may be that the listeners in the previous study were presented with unfamiliar talkers. Under conditions where one has been repeatedly exposed to a talker, as is typically the case with famous people, talker-specific details may affect perceptual processing relatively early. The present research sought to explore the potential for relatively early talker effects in the perception of words spoken by famous talkers in a speeded-shadowing task. Words were presented using a long-term repetition priming paradigm where half …

The Case For Participatory Education, Stephen Thornton-Taylor

Participatory learning or "Participatory Education" as a formal declaration of either ideology or praxis has yet to be written and I would certainly not attempt to write one in the current educational capacity I now find myself in however I have found myself in the unique position of actually being first to something and so have decided to enjoin the relatively scant sketches of, as far as the great blade of written history is concerned, cutting edge economic philosophy with the over-personal, absolutely singular experience of a student-teacher in Cleveland, Ohio. The principles of Participatory Education are adapted from the …
