Foundational Competencies: Innovation In Legal Education, David E. Van Zandt

Faculty Working Papers

Spurred by a rapidly changing legal environment and a desire to differentiate and maximize the success of our graduates, Northwestern Law recently completed a major strategic planning initiative resulting in a revolutionary report entitled Plan 2008: Preparing Great Leaders for the Changing World. Plan 2008 is the most recent installment of a long-term process to enhance our student quality and programs. The new initiatives build upon a strategic plan that we have been refining since its implementation in 1998. Under the prior plan, we introduced the evaluative admissions interview and work-experience policy for applicants.1 We also added a number of …

This year’s accomplishments and highlights included updating our technology, streamlining caseloads, refurbishment of our infrastructure, and education and public outreach. Our dedicated employees have continued to perform admirably despite budgetary and personnel cuts. We have maintained our quality of services throughout our courts. Alinsky's Prescription: Democracy Alongside Law, Barbara L. Bezdek Jan 2009

Alinsky's Prescription: Democracy Alongside Law, Barbara L. Bezdek

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the import of the life’s work of Saul Alinsky—arguably the most prominent founder of contemporary organizing—to the content and methodologies of today’s legal education. I review the community organizing theory and practice of Saul Alinsky for its synergies and lessons on two approaches by legal theorists and educators working in law schools today — “community lawyering” and “social justice”education. These approaches embrace the special responsibility of the legal profession for the quality of justice in society[1] by extending the traditional conceptions of lawyers’ relationships with clients in ways that are informed by the insights of community organizers, …

Providing Interdisciplinary Services To At-Risk Families To Prevent The Placement Of Children In Foster Care, Deborah J. Weimer

Faculty Scholarship

Grandparents need support to take on the responsibility of children whose parents cannot care for them due to drug addiction, mental health issues, HIV illness, or other health problems. Without support and assistance, these families and children are likely to end up enmeshed in the already overburdened child abuse and neglect system. The University of Maryland has created a model program providing social work and legal services to at-risk grandparent families to help avoid the unnecessary placement of these chldren in foster care. In this new program, student attorneys and student social workers worked witn the grandparent client to help …

Why Would Anyone Want To Be A Public Interest Lawyer?, Philip G. Schrag

Georgetown Law Faculty Lectures and Appearances

I can barely express how grateful the Law Center is to the Delaneys for their generous gift, or what an honor it is to be designated as the first Delaney Family Professor of Public Interest Law at this incredibly vibrant institution. But our celebration today is not merely the recognition of my scholarship or public service. What the Delaneys have done is to honor not only me but also the hundreds of Georgetown students, faculty, staff and alumni who perform public service. Whether they have achieved high office, like Senators Richard Durbin and Patrick Leahy, or provide free legal services …

Are Corporate Officers Advised About Fiduciary Duties, Lyman P.Q. Johnson Jan 2009

Are Corporate Officers Advised About Fiduciary Duties, Lyman P.Q. Johnson

Scholarly Articles

This Article reports the results of an empirical study of whether and how in-house corporate counsel advise corporate officers about fiduciary duties. The fiduciary duties of officers long have been neglected by courts, scholars, and lawyers, as the Introduction explains, even though executives play a central role in corporate success and failure. The study’s findings, organized by type of company (public or private), size, and attorney position within the firm, show several interesting patterns in advice-giving practices. For example, fewer than half of all respondents provided advice to officers below the senior-most rank. The results raise the possibility that, unlike …
