Teaching Professionalism, Patrick E. Longan Mar 2009

Teaching Professionalism, Patrick E. Longan

Mercer Law Review

In Work and Integrity, William Sullivan posits that all professional schools must train their students in "three apprenticeships." The first apprenticeship is intellectual; it develops the knowledge base and the habits of the mind that the profession deems most important for the practitioner to possess. The second equips the student with the set of skills that will be necessary for translating the intellectual training into effective action in practice. The third inculcates the student with the values and ideals of the profession. To master the complex tasks we expect of professionals, and to use that mastery in ways that …

Resolution Through Devolution: Policing, Youth Justice And Imprisonment In Wales, Gavin Dingwall

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

Criminal justice was not devolved to the Welsh Assembly but the process of devolution has resulted in de facto differences emerging between England and Wales. In the previous edition of this journal, Jackie Jones argued that these differences would lead to the eventual devolution of criminal justice to the Assembly. This response article concentrates on three distinct areas of criminal justice policy – policing, youth justice and imprisonment – and seeks to situate the Welsh concerns in a broader context. The conclusion draws together what I see as the two central themes of Jones‘ paper: the inevitability of a Welsh …

Update On Legal Relief Options For Unaccompanied Alien Children Following The Enactment Of The William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection, Deborah Lee, Manoj Govindaiah, Angela D. Morrison, David Thronson

Faculty Scholarship

This practice advisory will discuss recent developments in legal relief for unaccompanied alien children brought about by the enactment of the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-457; “TVPRA”) on December 23, 2008. In addition to expanding protections for trafficking victims generally, the TVPRA made procedural and substantive changes to immigration legal relief for unaccompanied alien children.
