International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Welcome to Volume 5, Issue 1 of the ICCTE e-journal. Before I give you a brief synopsis of what morsels this issue contains, I would like to provide a framework for the next two issues. Volume 5, Issue 2 will reflect the material from the upcoming ICCTE conference and forthcoming papers. Volume 6, Issue 1 will focus on a new idea. We would like to start with some theme issues for 2011. The first will be the theme “Christian colleagues in secular institutions: iron sharpening iron”, so get your pencils sharpened for that. The Lord has many things in store …

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This paper considers the Christian teacher’s “place” in today’s increasingly diverse public school classrooms. Specifically, the paper explores the complexities of working as a Christian within educational systems which promote tolerance of all cultures and religious views. Is it possible for a Christian teacher to remain committed to The Way while employed in a system which encourages pluralism, equity, and diversity? Using insights and responses of participants in a Christian university education course on teaching in multicultural classrooms, a framework is provided to consider what it means to teach as a Christian in multicultural school settings.

Nurse practitioners need to be effective in responding to large-scale natural and man-made disasters. However, disaster core competencies for NPs are largely nonexistent. The purpose of this study was to assess NPs' level of disaster preparedness and determine how NPs acquired knowledge about disaster preparation. Findings suggest that a consistent national NP curriculum for disaster preparedness, including communication with other disaster agencies, is needed. With proper education, NPs can play a major role in disaster management.

Lack Of A Will Or Of A Way? Taking A Capability Approach For Analysing Disability Policy Shortcomings And Ensuring Programme Impact In Afghanistan, Jean-Francois Trani, Parul Bakhshi, Ayan A. Noor, Ashraf Mashkoor Jan 2009

Lack Of A Will Or Of A Way? Taking A Capability Approach For Analysing Disability Policy Shortcomings And Ensuring Programme Impact In Afghanistan, Jean-Francois Trani, Parul Bakhshi, Ayan A. Noor, Ashraf Mashkoor

Brown School Faculty Publications

The present paper attempts to analyse some of the shortcomings that have impeded efforts in the field of disability in Afghanistan. After an overview of recent disability initiatives, this article presents elements that have contributed to the limited impact. The context of a Conflict Affected Fragile State (CAFS) makes particularly intricate the development of state-capacity as well as the delivery of basic services for the population. To overcome identified gaps, it is argued that Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach (CA) constitutes a relevant framework for designing disability policy and implementation. While the definition of human development has evolved considerably over the …

Dna Profiling And Fourth Amendment Privacy, Daniel. Ohm Jan 2009

Dna Profiling And Fourth Amendment Privacy, Daniel. Ohm

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

DNA profiling is a newly developed technique used by law enforcement agencies in the United States as a form of individual identification to prove whether a suspect is guilty. Due to the fact that it is a newly developed technology there is little legislation to regulate its proper uses and restrictions. Therefore restrictions are largely determined by court decisions as to whether DNA profiling violates constitutional rights. Current decisions in state and federal district courts tend to permit use of DNA profiling without a warrant. These decisions violate principles of privacy guaranteed by the US Constitution as interpreted in pre-DNA …

Centrosome Recruitment, Erik. Raborn Jan 2009

Centrosome Recruitment, Erik. Raborn

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

The centrosome is a dynamic and highly active organelle within the cell. It plays a pivotal role in mitosis driving several of the physical changes that are taking place. The centrosome self-replicates before mitosis in order to set up two spindle poles on opposite sides of the cell. This leads to the creation of a mother and daughter centrosomes within a cell that have distinct components. This project will examine the recruitment of proteins to the centrosome as a cell progresses through the cell cycle. The proteins examined are (Sd(B-tubulin, (Sf(B-tubulin, Nek 2, Centrin2, p150Glued, EB-1, and dynein intermediate chain. …

Manipulation Of Normal Cells To Produce A Cancer-Like Mitotic Phenotype, Christina. Luffman Jan 2009

Manipulation Of Normal Cells To Produce A Cancer-Like Mitotic Phenotype, Christina. Luffman

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Most tumors contain multiple karyotypes due to genomic instability gained through chromosomal segregational defects. The variability of genomic changes within a population makes it difficult to study specific processes without the existence of confounding mutations. My project is to create a model system for observation of mitotic defects, specifically multipolar spindles, in a normal cell line, where the genome is intact. Induction of centrosome amplification is required for formation of multipolar spindles. Treatments with colcemid showed a 10% increase in abnormal centrosome numbers over control. However, treatment with hydroxyurea and transfection of hMPSl showed little increase. Extra centrosomes are insufficient …

Correlation Between Specific Carcinogenic Chemicals And Specific Mitotic Defects And The Restorative Role Of Antioxidants, Travis. Yates Jan 2009

Correlation Between Specific Carcinogenic Chemicals And Specific Mitotic Defects And The Restorative Role Of Antioxidants, Travis. Yates

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

The progression of cancerous cells towards a more aggressive tumor can be linked to external elements called carcinogens. The goal of this project is to examine the correlation between exposure to specific carcinogens and an increase of mitotic defects. These defects can manifest as lagging chromosomes, multipolar spindles, and anaphase bridges. Some of these instabilities are associated with the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are known to damage DNA. The potential for damage to the genome can be averted via antioxidants. Using the oral cancer cell line UPCI:SCC103, we established a baseline for the mitotic defects in the …

Sentinels Of Liberty, Robert Wicks Jan 2009

Sentinels Of Liberty, Robert Wicks

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

The Marvel character Captain America was created in 1941 as an unabashed, patriotic icon who was meant to inspire Americans in the face of war. At the end of World War II, however, American identity underwent a split between diplomatic "prophetic realism" and aggressive "zealous nationalism." The inherent dilemma for Captain America quickly became which side of the American psyche he was to represent. Marvel has dealt with the problem of representation by allowing the original Captain America to be a prophetic realist, while introducing "doubles" of Captain America who act as zealous nationalists. In each era of Captain America's …

Before And After Nagpra, Laura. Ray Jan 2009

Before And After Nagpra, Laura. Ray

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was approved by Congress on November 16, 1990 after years of American Indian lobbying due to the unfair treatment of American Indian remains. Since the enactment of NAGPRA there have been multiple complaints from the archaeological community that the way in which they conduct their jobs has been severely limited by the implementation of NAGPRA. In this study I compare data from the Secretary's Report to Congress questionnaire, conducted by the National Park Service's Federal Archaeology Program, to determine whether NAGPRA has caused an increase or decrease in the amount of …

Caught Red-Handed, But Not Guilty, Katherine L. Mockler Jan 2009

Caught Red-Handed, But Not Guilty, Katherine L. Mockler

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

There is a debate among scholars regarding how courts should judge defendants caught in government decoy and sting operations. As a retributivist, I believe we should only punish those who are culpable. Following this assumption, I argue that courts should punish entrapped people if they are culpable and that the subjective test, which holds that a defendant is culpable if he was predisposed to commit the crime, should be the standard by which courts judge defendants who claim entrapment. The objective test, which focuses on the propriety of the government conduct, fails to accurately assess culpability because, under this test, …

Construction Of Mitochondrion-Targeted Telomerase For Analysis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ricardo. Martin Jan 2009

Construction Of Mitochondrion-Targeted Telomerase For Analysis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ricardo. Martin

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Telomerase is associated with telomere production and nDNA protection. However, studies by Santos et al. have demonstrated that human telomerase has a mitochondrial entry sequence and in the presence of hydrogen peroxide it has been found inside the mitochondrion and may cause mitochondrial DNA mutations. Saccharomyces cerevisiae contains telomerase, but it does not have the mitochondrial entry sequence. To determine if the presence of telomerase in the mitochondria can induce mutations an experiment was developed in which a mitochondrion entry sequence would be fused to the S. cerevisiae telomerase enzyme. This fusion could then be screened in S. cerevisiae with …

Investigation Of Talin Head-Tail Interactions, Amber. Butyn Jan 2009

Investigation Of Talin Head-Tail Interactions, Amber. Butyn

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

Talin is a ubiquitous, high-molecular-weight, flexible protein that plays a critical role in focal adhesions by activating, as well as connecting, integrins to the actin cytoskeleton. Talin's inactive auto-inhibitory state is speculated to be one of its modes of regulation inside the cell and is achieved through its head-tail interactions. In order to decipher the stability of this interaction, the head domain (residues 206-405) was cloned into a modified pET28m vector while the tail domains (residues 1654-2344 and 2225-2344) were cloned into the pET32a vector to obtain octa-histidine tagged and un-tagged peptide, respectively. Neither co-expression nor pull-down using the His-tagged …

Innovation And Us Engineering School Ranking, Andres C. Salazar Jan 2009

Innovation And Us Engineering School Ranking, Andres C. Salazar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

An association between the national ranking of a graduate school in engineering and innovation is investigated by product moment analysis and Spearman correlation coefficients. This paper combines school statistical data used in the national ranking with data normally associated with innovation, e.g., the college’s number of patents, licenses and startups, to determine if there is some correlation between these factors and if so, to what extent there is a relationship. We determine the product moment and Spearman correlation coefficients between the ranking data and the innovation data from the top twenty five engineering schools in a recent USNWR ranking (2006). …

Seven Deadly Factors Associated With Technology Company Failure, Andres C. Salazar Jan 2009

Seven Deadly Factors Associated With Technology Company Failure, Andres C. Salazar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Seven factors associated with technology company failure (or death) are described along with features that distinguish each factor. A company is commonly defined to have failed when it passes through a stage of insolvency and then an asset sale or a merger. It is well known that several critical factors can lead to a successful launch of a company – market timing, management experience, product differentiation, product quality, financing, sales execution, team compatibility, etc. High tech companies deal with additional risks at launch such as commercialization difficulties, team formation and technology lifespan. Little research has been done on identifying major …

Learned Professions And Jews In Modern Germany And Their Heritage For Israel, Charles E. Mcclelland Jan 2009

Learned Professions And Jews In Modern Germany And Their Heritage For Israel, Charles E. Mcclelland

History Faculty Publications

The crisis of German professional life under Hitler was especially fateful for German Jews. When postwar German professional life had to be rebuilt, one of the hardest tasks was to reconnect with the fundamental values of modern professional activity without the emigrated and murdered German Jews who had been so instrumental in sustaining those values. The shape of Israeli professional life can be traced in some as yet little-explored ways back to influences brought to bear by German and other Central and Eastern European émigrés whose professionalization models before migration to Eretz Yisrael had much to do with the German …

Investigation Of A Neutrosophic Group, A. Elrawy, Florentin Smarandache, Ayat A. Temraz Jan 2009

Investigation Of A Neutrosophic Group, A. Elrawy, Florentin Smarandache, Ayat A. Temraz

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

We use a neutrosophic set, instead of an intuitionistic fuzzy because the neutrosophic set is more general, and it allows for independent and partial independent components, while in an intuitionistic fuzzy set, all components are totally dependent. In this article, we present and demonstrate the concept of neutrosophic invariant subgroups. We delve into the exploration of this notion to establish and study the neutrosophic quotient group. Further, we give the concept of a neutrosophic normal subgroup as a novel concept.

Annacarla Scenes, Michael Mauldin Jan 2009

Annacarla Scenes, Michael Mauldin

New Mexico Composers' Archive

After enjoying Annacarla (my composing and teaching retreat in northern New Mexico) for four years, I realized that I had written a number of pieces there and had never been "dry" while composing there. But, outside of "The Valley at Annacarla" for the Durango Youth Symphony, I had not written music "about" what I saw and experienced there. These five short scenes may seem like fleeting visions or quixotic journal entries, but they represent brief but eternal moments of connection with the sacred that is all around us, "All That Is."

Offering Rss Feeds: Does It Help To Gain Competitive Advantage?, Dan Ma Jan 2009

Offering Rss Feeds: Does It Help To Gain Competitive Advantage?, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, many Websites have adopted the really simple syndication (RSS) technology to deliver online content to visitors. In this paper, I build an analytical model to examine how the offering of RSS feeds impact the number of visitors, total traffic load, and profit of Websites in a competitive setting. I show that although RSS can always attract more visitors, it may reduce the Website's profit. Interestingly, in a competitive market there are cases that the RSS feeds hurt the offering Website but benefit the competing Website instead. The conditions under which these will happen are derived. I also study the …

Tuning On-Air Signatures For Balancing Performance And Confidentiality, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Peng Liu, Dik Lun Lee, Xuhua Ding Jan 2009

Tuning On-Air Signatures For Balancing Performance And Confidentiality, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Peng Liu, Dik Lun Lee, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate the trade off between performance and confidentiality in signature-based air indexing schemes for wireless data broadcast. Two metrics, namely, false drop probability and false guess probability, are defined to quantify the filtering efficiency and confidentiality loss of a signature scheme. Our analysis reveals that false drop probability and false guess probability share a similar trend as the tuning parameters of a signature scheme change and it is impossible to achieve a low false drop probability and a high false guess probability simultaneously. In order to balance the performance and confidentiality, we perform an analysis to …

Dynamic Web Service Selection For Reliable Web Service Composition, San-Yih Hwang, Ee Peng Lim, Chien-Hsiang Lee, Cheng-Hung Chen Jan 2009

Dynamic Web Service Selection For Reliable Web Service Composition, San-Yih Hwang, Ee Peng Lim, Chien-Hsiang Lee, Cheng-Hung Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper studies the dynamic web service selection problem in a failure-prone environment, which aims to determine a subset of Web services to be invoked at run-time so as to successfully orchestrate a composite web service. We observe that both the composite and constituent web services often constrain the sequences of invoking their operations and therefore propose to use finite state machine to model the permitted invocation sequences of Web service operations. We assign each state of execution an aggregated reliability to measure the probability that the given state will lead to successful execution in the context where each web …

Integrated Resource Allocation And Scheduling In Bidirectional Flow Shop With Multi-Machine And Cos Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhengyi Zhao, Shuzhi Sam Ge Jan 2009

Integrated Resource Allocation And Scheduling In Bidirectional Flow Shop With Multi-Machine And Cos Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhengyi Zhao, Shuzhi Sam Ge

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An integer programming (IP) model is proposed for integrated resource allocation and operation scheduling for a multiple job-agents system. Each agent handles a specific job-list in a bidirectional flowshop. For the individual agent scheduling problem, a formulation is proposed in continuous time domain and compared with an IP formulation in discrete time domain. Of particular interest is the formulation of the machine utilization function-- both in continuous time and discrete time. Fast heuristic methods are proposed with the relaxation of the machine capacity. For the integrated resource allocation and scheduling problem, a linear programming relaxation approach is applied to solve …

Synthesis Of Surface Composites Using Friction Stir Processing, Bharat Gattu Jan 2009

Synthesis Of Surface Composites Using Friction Stir Processing, Bharat Gattu

Masters Theses

"Composite materials have an edge over monolithic materials due to higher strength/stiffness - to - density ratios, improved fatigue and wear resistance and better high temperature properties. Surface composites provide improved tribological properties such as wear resistance, friction coefficient and corrosion resistance. Friction stir processing (FSP) which originated from friction stir welding (FSW - a method for joining aluminum alloys) is a solid state technique to modify the microstructure of the alloys. During FSP the frictional heat generated at the tool - work piece interface plasticizes the material allowing it to flow around the pin. The combined effect of the …

"A micron-precision micro-hole depth detection scheme has been developed which utilizes a confocal structure and a photomultiplier tube as a photodetector. This scheme is experimentally confirmed to posses an accuracy of greater than 95% for micro-holes on the order of one-hundred microns in diameter and tens of microns in depth and could be easily be integrated for the control of industrial and research oriented laser micro-machining process"--Abstract, page iii.

Feminizing Capital: A Corporate Imperative, Darren Rosenblum Jan 2009

Feminizing Capital: A Corporate Imperative, Darren Rosenblum

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

Recent economic events have turned the relationship between the public sector and the corporate world upside-down. The as-yet-unnamed financial crisis led governments to intervene in the private sector at levels not seen since the Great Depression. This crisis has exposed the need for new leadership in the corporate world and a new influx of public ideas in the private sector. Gendered understandings of economic relations have surfaced, with some arguing that testosterone encourages excessive greed in boom cycles and fear in bust cycles and that "the meltdown's a guy thing." Beyond allegations of causing the crisis, men have received …

Using Keyword Search Terms In E-Discovery And How They Relate To Issues Of Responsiveness, Privilege, Evidence Standards, And Rube Goldberg, Gregory L. Fordham Jan 2009

Using Keyword Search Terms In E-Discovery And How They Relate To Issues Of Responsiveness, Privilege, Evidence Standards, And Rube Goldberg, Gregory L. Fordham

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The emergence of digital evidence and the widespread implementation of e-discovery has brought both benefit and repercussion. In many respects, digital evidence has proven to be a better truth detector than its paper counterpart. At the same time, the volumes in which digital evidence exists make time-tested discovery techniques impractical. In fact, so significant are the technological differences between paper and digital evidence that even the handling procedures require considerable overhaul.
