Educators In The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, John L. Elias, Ed., Lucinda A. Nolan, Ed. Jan 2009

Educators In The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, John L. Elias, Ed., Lucinda A. Nolan, Ed.

Sacred Heart University Press Books

This book contains a collection of studies of prominent educators who have made significant contributions to handing on the Catholic intellectual tradition in the United States. These men and women have enriched this tradition by careful attention to educational theories and methods that find their origin in the Jewish and Christian past. Ancient Israel was assiduous in handing on the Torah or Law, the prophets dramatically called people back to the practices of the covenant, and the sages gave practical advice for everyday living. The Acts of the Apostles and the Letters of Paul chronicle the careful attention to safeguarding …

The Role Of Historical-Cultural Formations Within World-Systems Analysis: Reframing The Analysis Of Biomedicine In East Africa, David Baronov Jan 2009

The Role Of Historical-Cultural Formations Within World-Systems Analysis: Reframing The Analysis Of Biomedicine In East Africa, David Baronov

Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications

This essay introduces a novel analytical concept for world-systems analysis, historical-cultural formations, for the purpose of analyzing reciprocal global cultural exchanges across the capitalist world-system. This is done through four basic procedures. First, the perspective of world-systems analysis is adopted for the purpose of analyzing biomedicine in world-historical context and biomedicine itself is re-conceptualized as a historical-cultural formation across a single capitalist world-system. Second, in order to conceptually incorporate historical-cultural formations, the basic analytical framework of world-systems analysis is expanded to include cultural forms as integral features of the capitalist world-system, parallel with economic and political structures. Third, biomedicine is …

Reading Masculinity In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, David Michael Mraz Jan 2009

Reading Masculinity In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, David Michael Mraz

ETD Archive

The Waves subtly subverts traditional notions of gender, and creates a space for divergent expressions of masculinity, specifically, the masculinity referred to in this paper relates to norms established in England during the Edwardian and Post World War I periods. In The Waves, the three male voices, Bernard, Neville and Louis, are introduced at school to a pro-imperialist vision of masculinity which is further reinforced through their relationship with the silent Percival. However, unlike Percival, the three male voice characters are either barred from the homosocial (Nevill and Louis) or are ambivalent to its production (Bernard). By employing masculinity theory …

The Logic Of Religious Studies And Kathleen Flake, Blair Dee Hodges Jan 2009

The Logic Of Religious Studies And Kathleen Flake, Blair Dee Hodges

Arrington Student Writing Award Winners

Kathleen Flake’s 2009 Arrington lecture gave a sneak preview of research she has been conducting on the topic of plural marriage and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Flake, associate professor of American religious history at Vanderbilt University, brings a unique list of qualifications to her study by combining elements of law, religious studies, ritual, and the skills of an historian. Using these tools Flake explores what she calls the “priestly logic” of plural marriage, seeking to understand not only how 19th century outsiders viewed the peculiar institution, but how practicing Mormons themselves made sense of it. Flake …

The Irreligious American: Italian Immigrants In Ybor City, Florida, Madeline Edison Jan 2009

The Irreligious American: Italian Immigrants In Ybor City, Florida, Madeline Edison

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is a sociological examination of Italian immigrant communities in Ybor City, Florida and New Orleans, Louisiana between 1895 and 1920. The primary theorists used are Will Herberg and R. Stephen Warner. Examining Herberg and Warner's theory that to become American is to become religious in a public sphere, Ybor City, Florida is shown to be one location in which this theory is not applicable. Using records from the archdiocese in New Orleans, Louisiana and research performed by Gary Mormino, the conclusion is made that New Orleans fits Herberg and Warner's sociological theories, while Ybor City does not. The …

The Political Economy Of Development In South Korea, Geoffrey Gordon Jan 2009

The Political Economy Of Development In South Korea, Geoffrey Gordon

Theses & ETDs

A common explanation for South Korea's vulnerability to contagion in the East Asian Financial Crisis in 1997-98 has been the close relationship between business elites and the government – so-called “crony capitalism.” Since the crisis, a number of scholars have sought to revise the history of development in South Korea, attempting to explain how corruption could exist alongside development. They attribute the success of the developmental state to systemic vulnerabilities that forced politicians to enact development-friendly policies, or to private initiative in the face of self-seeking behavior by politicians. This thesis re-examines both the history of the developmental state in …

Whatever Happened To Anarchism?: Renaissance And Adaptation In Postwar America, Ryan Thompson Jan 2009

Whatever Happened To Anarchism?: Renaissance And Adaptation In Postwar America, Ryan Thompson

Theses & ETDs

This project is a multidisciplinary study of anarchism in the postwar United States.Though anarchism--the philosophy of a new social order based on liberty unrestricted by man-made law--had been declared obsolete in America in thought and movement by 1940 it would reemerge by the early 1960s. Anarchisms classical period--the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries--came with industrialization and modernity. Postwar anarchism evolved to another structural context: wealth, integration, centralization. The recovery of anarchism through historicization was contemporaneous with the renaissance. Paul Avrich was the exemplary chronicler of American anarchism. His research salvaged anarchism from distortion. The reassembly and continuity of anarchism …

A Reluctant Hero: L-Cpl Patrick Goggin Mm: The Story Of One Man’S War On The Western Front 1916-1918, Peter J. Dean

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

For Patrick (Paddy) Goggin there was no rush for glory. There was no thirst to enlist for King or country. In fact, it could be argued that he had no interest in the business of war at all. August 1914 came and went, so did the first Anzac day and later the Australian withdrawal from Gallipoli. Still Paddy did not stir from his life in Yass in the New South Wales countryside.

We will never really know what persuaded Paddy to join up. Given his strong Irish bloodlines, loyalty to the crown was unlikely to dig at his conscience. More …

Intercultural Relationships In Organizational Transformation: A Single Case-Study Of Baptist University Of The Américas, Albert Leonard Reyes Jan 2009

Intercultural Relationships In Organizational Transformation: A Single Case-Study Of Baptist University Of The Américas, Albert Leonard Reyes

Dissertations

Problem

This study seeks to discover intercultural relationships in organizational transformation during the transition of Hispanic Baptist Theological School, a non- degree-granting institution to Baptist University of the Americas, a degree-granting accredited theological university in light of its 62-year history. Furthermore, it asks whether or not the transformation has made BUA more effective in light of its mission.

Method

An exploratory, qualitative single-case study method with a contextual orientation was used to analyze how a complex and integrated system was transformed. I conducted seven group interviews with students, staff, faculty, alumni, trustees, donors, and denominational representatives and six individual interviews …

How George Eliot Came To Write Fiction, Rosemary Ashton Jan 2009

How George Eliot Came To Write Fiction, Rosemary Ashton

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

We are celebrating one hundred and fifty years since the publication in volume form of George Eliot's first work of fiction, Scenes of Clerical Life, three stories printed first in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine between January and November 1857, and then in two volumes in January 1858. I will tell the story of how George Eliot came to write fiction by moving backwards from the Scenes themselves, via George Eliot's journal entry of 6 December 1857, 'How I Came to Write Fiction', to her literary criticism in the Westminster Review in the earlier 1850s, and finally to two letters, of 1849 …

Review Of The Cherokee Nation And The Trail Of Tears By Theda Perdue And Michael D. Green, Rowena Mcclinton Jan 2009

Review Of The Cherokee Nation And The Trail Of Tears By Theda Perdue And Michael D. Green, Rowena Mcclinton

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Past chief of the Cherokee Nation (1985-1995) and social activist Wilma Mankiller remarked, "We are still here." Facing rampant racism, a fraudulent treaty, and then dislocation from their homelands in the southeast, Cherokees not only survived but prevailed. Reflectively, Theda Perdue and Michael Green have summarized the complexity and cunning complicity surrounding the 1838-9 infamous Cherokee displacement known as the Trail of Tears, adding to the scholarship of Tim Garrison, Gary Moulton, Walter Conser, Mary Young, and the late William G. McLoughlin.

They juxtapose the remarkable lives of two adversarial Cherokee figures, Major Ridge (along with his son John Ridge, …

Review Of African Creeks: Estelvste And The Creek Nation. By Gary Zellar, Robbie Ethridge Jan 2009

Review Of African Creeks: Estelvste And The Creek Nation. By Gary Zellar, Robbie Ethridge

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Estelvste, or "black people," in the Creek Indian language, are the subjects of this well-written, absorbing story of the people of African descent whose lot in life cast them with the Creek Indians of present-day Georgia and Alabama and, after Indian Removal, present- day Oklahoma. Gary Zellar refers to them as African Creeks, distinguishing this particular population from both African Americans, Euro-American Creeks, and Indian Creeks. Such distinctions are necessary to the history of the Creek Indians because, after European contact, Creek lives became irreversibly and forever blended with those of the immigrant populations, yet the Creeks themselves adhered …

Review Of Imagined Homes: Soviet German Immigrants In Two Cities By Hans Werner, Anke Ortlepp Jan 2009

Review Of Imagined Homes: Soviet German Immigrants In Two Cities By Hans Werner, Anke Ortlepp

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In his Imagined Homes, Hans Werner compares the acculturation experience of ethnic Germans from Poland and the Soviet Union who settled in two migration waves in what at first glance seem to be very different cities: Winnipeg, Canada, and Bielefeld, Germany. A closer look, however, reveals that the two cities had much in common. Both were medium-sized urban centers that had integrated newcomers before. The mentalities of their inhabitants were shaped as much by Cold War thinking as by a capitalistic outlook.

Still, Werner shows that although the migrants who came to Winnipeg in the 1950s and to Bielefeld …

Variants In The Samaritan Pentateuch Of The Hebrew Bible As Compared To The Masoretic Text, Sharon Sullivan Dufour Jan 2009

Variants In The Samaritan Pentateuch Of The Hebrew Bible As Compared To The Masoretic Text, Sharon Sullivan Dufour

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Not long after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE began the eventual end of a long history of textual competition between variations of the Pentateuch. For nearly two millennia the Masoretic Text has held a singular dominant position as the most authoritative text. However, it should never be forgotten that in the earliest history of the Pentateuch is a history of several variant Pentateuch texts that held high authority in different regions of the Near East. The Samaritan Pentateuch is one such text, with an ancient history of competition with the Jewish Masoretic Text. It contains many …
