Working Report #4: Range Of Services (Service Provider Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron Dec 2009

Working Report #4: Range Of Services (Service Provider Perspectives), Lirondel Hazineh, Gary Cameron

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This working report examines the differences in range of services across central, integrated, and school/community based sites including referrals to other services, direct support, advocacy, and collaborative efforts to provide services to families. Which models provide the most service options for families? How do service providers view the service options available to them in their work with families? How helpful are services to families?

The range of services available within agency based settings seemed the narrowest in comparison to other types of service delivery settings. Integrated service models appeared to increase the range and access to many formal services. Community …

Life Domain Research Report Series: Youth And Parent Health And Well Being (2010 Update), Michele Preyde, Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron, Lirondel Hazineh

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Children and youth who have participated in children’s mental health services often continue to live with a variety of emotional and behavioural challenges after service involvement has ended (Cameron, de Boer, Frensch, & Adams, 2003). A key consideration in understanding the long term community adaptation of these children and youth is the ongoing management of emotional and behavioural challenges and the impact these challenges have in the daily lives of youth and their families. Several standardized measures of mental health, physical health, stress, and quality of life were used to assess parental and youth functioning in the life domain of …

Beginnings Of The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy 1833-2000, John Henschke Dec 2009

Beginnings Of The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy 1833-2000, John Henschke

Adult Education Faculty Works

Andragogy had a very slow beginning over a period of almost one century as a term referring to the theory and practice of adult education. Numerous elements were involved in the seventy years it took to establish its foundation: starting in England and the USA; andragogy and human resource development (HRD); andragogy and self-directed learning (SDL); conflict between supporters and detractors; comparing European and USA perspectives; trust in learners' abilities; scientific foundation of andragogy; skepticism and its counter-balance; and, antecedents of andragogy. Trends in usage and considering its possible benefits set the tone for the future of andragogy from 2000 …

Comparing Perceptions Of The Nursing Profession Among Associate And Baccalaureate Nursing Students And Registered Nurses, Sherry R. Lovan Dec 2009

Comparing Perceptions Of The Nursing Profession Among Associate And Baccalaureate Nursing Students And Registered Nurses, Sherry R. Lovan

Nursing Faculty Publications

The inconsistencies between the perception of the profession of nursing and the reality of practice can lead to problems in student attrition or result in disillusionment with a career in nursing after a new graduate enters practice. With the nursing shortage reaching critical levels, it is important to examine possible discrepancies that exist and address strategies to reduce them.

For this study, a quantitative design was selected to explore how the perception of the nursing profession compared among first-semester associate degree nursing students, first-semester baccalaureate nursing students, and registered nurses. A convenience sample N = 238 included 69 ADN students, …

A Year Of Extremes, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton Dec 2009

A Year Of Extremes, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

What an incredible year! A year of almost inconceivable highs, and lows that bore down into our very beings, the time since we met last October has filled us with high hopes as well as dark fears. These conflicted realities are reflected both in our lives and in our work. For most BCTS members, indeed, for most Americans, the election of our first African American president was one of the most significant moments of our lives. I’ll never forget when Obama was declared victor shortly after 11:00 pm EST on November 4, 2008. As late as it was, I picked …

Assuming Elder Care Responsibility: Am I A Caregiver?, Lindsey E. Wylie, Eve M. Brank Dec 2009

Assuming Elder Care Responsibility: Am I A Caregiver?, Lindsey E. Wylie, Eve M. Brank

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Caregivers of the elderly face conflicting legal demands; they must make certain the elder’s needs are being met while not forcing undesired care on an adult capable of informed decisions. This dichotomy may be a reason a large volume of reported elder abuse derives from unintentional neglect on behalf of informal familial caregivers. The current research examines this possibility with exploratory interviews and an experiment. The interviews between elders and their family (30 dyads) revealed that many did not intend for the living arrangements to become permanent, and the nonelders were largely unprepared for the magnitude of changes and responsibilities …

Touching The Future : Building Skills For Life And Work, Johanna Wyn

Australian Education Review

AER 55 explores the goals of Australian education and of how schools should prepare young people for work and life. Section 1 provides an overview, discussing the nature of broad social and economic changes over the last 20 years, and their implications for the goals of Australian education systems today and for the future, and for what young people need to learn and why. Section 2 critically explores the assumptions which dominate current educational policies about the alignment of schooling with economic goals and work. Section 3 provides an analysis of the policy for social inclusion: the framing of educational …

That Could Be Me: The New Voices Of Poverty In Idaho, Stephanie Witt, Lisa Wennstrom, Carole Nemnich

Research and Reports

In fall of 2009, Boise State University Radio aired a series of stories highlighting the impacts of the changing economy on ordinary Idahoans. The stories were part of a larger project funded in part by the National Center for Media Engagement. The project culminated in a community roundtable held in September of 2009 at which advocates and policy makers discussed the stories, the larger context of poverty here in Idaho, and made policy recommendations. The Public Policy Center at Boise State University was contracted by Boise State Radio to prepare this short white paper. The paper is divided into three …

Extended Portraits, Matthew W. Schmitz Dec 2009

Extended Portraits, Matthew W. Schmitz

Art and Design

For my senior project, I wanted to do something photographically diverse and creative with the classmates of my major. I decided the focus of my project would be portraits and interviews documenting the experiences of those classmates; who they were as people and why they picked Cal Poly as their school. I researched various forms of portraiture and gathered those ideas and various questions to help flesh out my concept. My photo shoots experimented in various forms of alternative portraiture, accompanied with an answered questionnaire filled out by each of them. I wanted the finished product to be well laid …

From The Bronx Into The Wild! My Adventurous Experience At The Bronx Zoo, Lauren Noll Dec 2009

From The Bronx Into The Wild! My Adventurous Experience At The Bronx Zoo, Lauren Noll

Student Theses 2001-2013

Many people defend zoos, claiming that they provide great opportunities in education, scientific research, and the overall preservation of wildlife worldwide. However, many people will take the opposing side, arguing that it is wrong to deprive animals of their natural habitats and lifestyles. One of the greatest controversies of our time pertains to the moral issues associated with keeping animals in captivity, such as in zoos and aquariums.

Bringing Toxicology Into The 21st Century: A Global Call To Action, Troy Seidle, Martin Stephens Dec 2009

Bringing Toxicology Into The 21st Century: A Global Call To Action, Troy Seidle, Martin Stephens

Experimentation Collection

Conventional toxicological testing methods are often decades old, costly and low-throughput, with questionable relevance to the human condition. Several of these factors have contributed to a backlog of chemicals that have been inadequately assessed for toxicity. Some authorities have responded to this challenge by implementing large-scale testing programmes. Others have concluded that a paradigm shift in toxicology is warranted. One such call came in 2007 from the United States National Research Council (NRC), which articulated a vision of ‘‘21st century toxicology” based predominantly on non-animal techniques. Potential advantages of such an approach include the capacity to examine a far greater …

Animal Cognition, Kristin Andrews, Ljiljana Radenovic

Sentience Collection

Debates in applied ethics about the proper treatment of animals often refer to empirical data about animal cognition, emotion, and behavior. In addition, there is increasing interest in the question of whether any nonhuman animal could be something like a moral agent.

Improving Udder Health And Milk Quality, Michelle Flatt Dec 2009

Improving Udder Health And Milk Quality, Michelle Flatt

Dairy Science

The objective of this study was to improve udder health and milk quality through the use of an on farm culture based treatment program. Milk samples were collected from mastitis cows, fresh cows, and high somatic cell count cows (cows with greater than 400,000 cells/mL in the last two DHIA tests) and cultured on bi plates; each side consisting of a selective medium for either gram positive bacteria and gram negative bacteria. The plates were then incubated for 24 hours and examined for growth. When growth was present, the infected quarter(s) were treated with cephapirin sodium for two consecutive milkings. …

Relationship Between Tissue Carotenoid Concentrations In The Pacific Mole Crab, Emerita Analoga, And Parasitism By The Acanthocephalan, Profilicollis Altmani, Whitney Melroy Dec 2009

Relationship Between Tissue Carotenoid Concentrations In The Pacific Mole Crab, Emerita Analoga, And Parasitism By The Acanthocephalan, Profilicollis Altmani, Whitney Melroy

Biological Sciences

Acanthocephalan worms infect two hosts to reach full development. Some species have been demonstrated to change their intermediate host’s behavior or coloration to increase the likelihood they will reach the final host. The pacific mole crab, Emerita analoga, is commonly parasitized by Profilicollis altmani along the Pacific coast of North and South America, but the impact of parasitism on the crab intermediate host is unclear. We investigated whether P. altmani alters the concentration of dietary carotenoids present in E. analoga tissues and if the parasite may also acquire pigments normally allocated to the host. Fifty eight gravid female crabs were …

Hands On Health Symposium: Student Research And Creative Endeavors, Jessica Lynn Rogers

Kinesiology and Public Health

This paper explains the organization and planning process for the student research section of the first annual Hands on Health Symposium that was held on the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo campus. The event was to promote and make public awareness of healthy living. I did a write up of the sources I used, and what I did, so that the next student in charge of putting on the student section, will have a guideline.
