Gamma Motor Neurons Express Distinct Genetic Markers At Birth And Require Muscle Spindle-Derived Gdnf For Postnatal Survival, Neil A. Shneider, Meghan N. Brown, Courtney A. Smith, James Pickel, Francisco J. Alvarez Dec 2009

Gamma Motor Neurons Express Distinct Genetic Markers At Birth And Require Muscle Spindle-Derived Gdnf For Postnatal Survival, Neil A. Shneider, Meghan N. Brown, Courtney A. Smith, James Pickel, Francisco J. Alvarez

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Gamma motor neurons (γ-MNs) selectively innervate muscle spindle intrafusal fibers and regulate their sensitivity to stretch. They constitute a distinct subpopulation that differs in morphology, physiology and connectivity from α-MNs, which innervate extrafusal muscle fibers and exert force. The mechanisms that control the differentiation of functionally distinct fusimotor neurons are unknown. Progress on this question has been limited by the absence of molecular markers to specifically distinguish and manipulate γ-MNs. Recently, it was reported that early embryonic γ-MN precursors are dependent on GDNF. Using this knowledge we characterized genetic strategies to label developing γ-MNs based on GDNF receptor expression, …

Voice And Volume Of Leader Self-Awareness, Michael J.M. Mcdonald Dec 2009

Voice And Volume Of Leader Self-Awareness, Michael J.M. Mcdonald

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study proposed that the level of self-awareness possessed by a leader has a direct relationship with the engagement level of the team he or she leads. A quantitative approach using the results of self-other leadership ratings and team engagement ratings were examined to explain employee engagement through perceptions of leadership awareness.

By understanding leadership through the integration of two instruments, one designed to measure seven specific demands of leadership (the L7 instrument) and another to measure employee engagement on twelve dimensions (the Q12 instrument), this study explored the relationship between leader self-awareness and the effect of that awareness on …

A Study Of The Perceptions Of Career American Missionaries In The Countries Of Kenya And Tanzania Relating To Their Overseas Field-Based Orientation Experiences, John S. Basham Dec 2009

A Study Of The Perceptions Of Career American Missionaries In The Countries Of Kenya And Tanzania Relating To Their Overseas Field-Based Orientation Experiences, John S. Basham

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to examine the lived field orientation experiences of 12 missionaries living in Kenya and Tanzania relative to their perceptions of personal effectiveness. This study was driven by how a segment of missionaries described their field orientation in relation to perceived effectiveness on the field. Four major themes relative to field orientation emerged. Recommendations relating to missionary field orientation programs were offered.

Every year thousands of new missionaries relocate overseas with the intent of ministering in a new culture. All experience cultural shock and problems. Orientation experiences and personal definitions of effectiveness could impact why …

Examining The Effects Of Penning On Juvenile Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina Carolina), Nicolas Frederick Dec 2009

Examining The Effects Of Penning On Juvenile Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina Carolina), Nicolas Frederick

Theses and Dissertations

Box turtle (Terrapene carolina) populations have been declining over the last several decades, and one major cause is increasing urbanization. As a result of habitat fragmentation, wildlife managers are frequently turning to new and alternative management strategies. Traditional box turtle management has included relocation, which has been met with limited success. This study aims to combine these strategies with another less-studied one: forcing turtles to overwinter on site by penning them in an outdoor enclosure. Two sets of juvenile box turtles were released at the Virginia Commonwealth University Rice Center: one penned on site in a pen for one year, …

The P600 Event-Related Potential Across Ages And Ear Conditions, Kyla Lewis Tree Dec 2009

The P600 Event-Related Potential Across Ages And Ear Conditions, Kyla Lewis Tree

Theses and Dissertations

Studying language development through event-related potentials provides specific information regarding how the brain processes specific aspects of language over time. In this study, the P600 component, a positive wave occurring approximately 600 ms post-stimulus and known for detecting syntactic errors, was specifically analyzed. Thirty children between the ages of 5 and 12 years listened to linguistically correct, syntactically incorrect, and semantically incorrect sentences in three ear conditions: monaurally to the right ear, monaurally to the left ear, and binaurally. The participants were instructed to judge the sentences to be correct or incorrect. Comparisons were then made of the latency and …

Targeted Funding Of Research And Education And Faculty Perception Of Academic Freedom In Medical Education, Shelly Elliott Dec 2009

Targeted Funding Of Research And Education And Faculty Perception Of Academic Freedom In Medical Education, Shelly Elliott

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between targeted funding of research and education and faculty perception of academic freedom at their medical schools. A total of 130 physician and basic sciences faculty from three medical schools assessed academic freedom at their institutions on an academic freedom inventory developed specifically for this study. The lack of a representative sample and the weak explanatory power of the findings limit conclusions that could be drawn. Using multiple regression analysis, the researcher was not able to reject the null for a relationship between targeted funding and academic freedom, using …

The Inclusive Secondary Teacher: The Leaders’ Perspective, Michelle Pearce, Jan Gray, Glenda Campbell-Evans

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Australian legislation and policies over the last fifteen years have reinforced the rights of students with disabilities to be included in mainstream classrooms. To make this a reality, change has been necessary in a number of areas such as teacher knowledge, resource allocation, curriculum reform, and support services. This paper presents a profile of an inclusive secondary school teacher from the perspective of Australian educational leaders. A qualitative methodology was used in this study. Fifty leaders in inclusive education across Australia were interviewed. Shulman’s (1986) model of teacher knowledge was used to analyse and report the data. The paper identifies …

Differences In Exchange Situations In Fast Moving Consumer Goods' Markets, Rose Leahy

Dept. of Marketing & International Business Publications

This paper explores the perceptions and the behaviour of consumers in Fast Moving Consumer Goods’ (FMCG) markets, with the objective of determining the nature of exchange in these markets. Adopting a qualitative approach to the research, ten focus groups were conducted among Irish consumers in FMCG markets. Emerging from the research are four dominant exchange situations that exist in FMCG markets. These exchange situations are classified as inconsistent transaction exchanges, distant committed exchanges, opportunistic interactive exchanges and reciprocal interactive exchanges. The dominant conclusion of this paper is that marketing strategies appropriate to these exchange situations need to be developed, …
