Distribution Of News Information Through Social Bookmarking: An Examination Of Shared Stories In The Delicious Website, Deborah S. Chung, Kwan Yi
Journalism and Media Faculty Publications
Introduction. This study examined the selection and sharing of news stories from Delicious, a popular social bookmarking site, in order to identify the most frequently consulted news information sources and news topics.
Method. Targeting US-specific sources through initial computer screening of URLs, we employed content analysis to further analyse story topics and sources that were unclassified through the initial computer screening method.
Analysis. After examining frequencies and percentages of the variables, a qualitative analysis was employed to assess relationships between story sources and story topics.
Results. Findings document the diverse nature of stories from both traditional and new media …

Journal of Public Transportation
Key contributors to address maintenance concerns for rural transit systems are an aging fleet, poor maintenance practices, and a lack of technical expertise. This lack of local maintenance expertise is especially severe in rural areas. This paper examines the general requirements and maintenance service approach for a Regional Maintenance Center model in rural transportation systems. Among other findings of this study, it was determined that Regional Maintenance Centers, with a training center for mechanics and drivers, could improve vehicle reliability, increase vehicle longevity, and improve service to transit clientele. Also determined was that a generalized “onesize- fits-all” regional maintenance program …

The Effects Of Shoe Traction And Obstacle Height On Lower Extremity Coordination Dynamics During Walking., Leslie Decker, Jeremy J. Houser, John M. Noble, Gregory M. Karst, Nicholas Stergiou
Journal Articles: Physical Therapy
This study aims to investigate the effects of shoe traction and obstacle height on lower extremity relative phase dynamics (analysis of intralimb coordination) during walking to better understand the mechanisms employed to avoid slippage following obstacle clearance. Ten participants walked at a self-selected pace during eight conditions: four obstacle heights (0%, 10%, 20%, and 40% of limb length) while wearing two pairs of shoes (low and high traction). A coordination analysis was used and phasing relationships between lower extremity segments were examined. The results demonstrated that significant behavioral changes were elicited under varied obstacle heights and frictional conditions. Both decreasing …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Binding to the primary receptor CD4 induces conformational changes in the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) gp120 envelope glycoprotein that allow binding to the coreceptor (CCR5 or CXCR4) and ultimately trigger viral membrane-cell membrane fusion mediated by the gp41 transmembrane envelope glycoprotein. Here we report the derivation of an HIV-1 gp120 variant, H66N, that confers envelope glycoprotein resistance to temperature extremes. The H66N change decreases the spontaneous sampling of the CD4-bound conformation by the HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins, thus diminishing CD4-independent infection. The H66N change also stabilizes the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein complex once the CD4-bound state is achieved, decreasing the …

Booty Calls: Is It Just About Sex?, Knowledge@Smu
Booty Calls: Is It Just About Sex?, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
It may seem that booty calls serve men more so than women. After all, men desire sex more than women – a notion often rationalised by the lower biological cost of sex to men, compared to women. However, if booty calls favour men more than women, why might women be inclined to entertain calls for casual sex? Psychology professor Norman Li believes that booty calls should be looked upon as more than just sex; that it is, in fact, a strategy employed by both sexes in negotiating between their needs.
The Effect Of Hedonic Motivations, Socialibility And Shyness On The Implusive Buying Tendencies Of The Irish Consumer, Mayank Dhaundiyal, Joseph Coughlan
The Effect Of Hedonic Motivations, Socialibility And Shyness On The Implusive Buying Tendencies Of The Irish Consumer, Mayank Dhaundiyal, Joseph Coughlan
Conference papers
Previous empirical studies have shown that consumers' hedonic shopping motivations can reliably predict their impulsive buying tendencies (IBT). Impulsivity has been shown to have strong roots in people’s personality (Verplanken and Herabadi 2001). This study extended current research to include two other personality constructs - shyness and sociability - that have not been tested against impulsivity in the literature. A questionnaire comprising of subscales of IBT, hedonic shopping motivations, shyness and sociability as developed by Verplanken and Herabadi (2001), Arnold and Reynolds (2003) and Cheek and Buss (1981) respectively was administered to 194 respondents in two prominent Dublin city centre …

Denitrification Of Surface And Ground Water Applying Autohydrogenotrophic Bacteria In A Novel Upflow Bio-Electrochemical Reactor(Uber), S. Ghafari, M. Hasan, M.K. Aroua
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Nitrates in different surface and groundwater resources became a worldwide problem which raised concerns due to severe impacts on human and animal health. Although diverse abiotic methods were reported to remove nitrate from water, they fail to entirely treat nitrate. Biological denitrification is the only treatment method capable to reduce inorganic nitrate compounds to harmless nitrogen gas. Autohydrogenotrophic denitrifiers were applied in this study to prevent any problematic outcomes of heterotrophs’ metabolisms raised from organic carbon source. A novel upflow bio–electrochemical reactor (UBER) was designed and employed to generate in-situ hydrogen and fulfill denitrifying process at cathode zone. Granular activated …

The Alternative New Media And Democratic Participation In Malaysia: Opportunities And Challenges, M.S. Ahmad Ishak
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
This paper examines how Malaysian civil societies have explored the use of new media technology, particularly the Internet, to promote the freedom of expression and participation in local democratic processes. The analytical discussions attempt to shed light on several questions. What are the opportunities and limitations of new media as a civic tool? What has been the impact on freedom of expression so far? What have been the problems? What are the possible future directions and concerns? Discussion of these questions is structured into several parts. The first part introduces the definitions and scope of new media and other concepts …

The Challenges And Implication Of Dual Carrier Women On Future Work Force In Malaysia: A Global Perspective, S. Marican, A. Borhanuddin, N. Abdullah
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
The trend of workforce in Malaysia shows that more than 60% of the working women are married. Hence we can foresee that there will be a major impact on future working culture as more women enter the workforce. This trend can interfere negatively with home life in three distinct ways that is time, health, and psychological spillover. The most well documented pressures family members experience in balancing work and family are work overload and conflict due to multiple roles. Hence this paper will discuss the findings based on an exploratory study done among 1006 working women. It intends to bring …
The Effect Of Frequent Managerial Turnover On Organizational Performance: A Study Of Professional Baseball Managers, Gregory C. Hill
The Effect Of Frequent Managerial Turnover On Organizational Performance: A Study Of Professional Baseball Managers, Gregory C. Hill
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
This analysis is designed to study the question of a manager’s contribution to the organization, particularly in terms of uncertainty related to managerial succession. The theory of managerial succession, which is the replacement of one public manager with another, suggests a negative relationship between change and organizational performance. Organizations’ decision to change managers more often exacerbates the negative effect on performance. The hypotheses are tested using baseball managers as proxies for public managers, as they perform similar duties, have similar goals, and operate under similar constraints. The results suggest that managerial succession has a negative effect on organizational performance. Frequent …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
As outlined in the Third National Agricultural Policy (NAP3), 1998-2010, there is a need to enhance the competitiveness and to increase value-added to the whole supply chain as well as to position Malaysia as an International Halal Food Hub. Its effectiveness as the Halal Food Hub is based on the expectation and beliefs that: (i) Malaysia is recognized as a truly Islamic country; (ii) Malaysia has the raw materials and supporting infrastructure as well as the processing technologies to produce and market the Halal food products; (iii) Halal certification issued by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is recognized …
Malaysian Foreign Policy Orientation And Relations In The Post-Mahathir Years, K. Md Khalid
Malaysian Foreign Policy Orientation And Relations In The Post-Mahathir Years, K. Md Khalid
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Malaysian foreign policy under Mahathir (1981-2003) has been described as independent, active and pragmatic. Two decades of Mahathir’s leadership have resulted in Malaysia becoming more internationally recognised as a model of stable, multicultural and developing country with a relatively impressive economy. Malaysia was also regarded as an exemplary progressive and moderate Islamic country. While the importance of trade and investment was evident as the basis of Malaysia’s external ties with many countries (including the Commonwealth of Independence States – CIS), other factors which included religion (Islam) in the context of multiculturalism also became significant determinants. In effect, Malaysia’s international image …

The Malaysian Agricultural Industry In The New Millennium: Issues And Challenges, B.B. Bakar
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Malaysian agriculture is characterized by dualism, viz. smallholder’s sector with an average farm size of 1 - 2 ha, and the plantation-based estate sector with farm sizes in excess of 500 ha. This dichotomy in agricultural industry placed great economic emphasis on cash crops, namely oil palm, rubber, and cocoa although sizeable acreages of the arable lands are planted with food crops like rice, pepper, fruit orchards, vegetables, and herbs. The industry has evolved from a stereotypic Third World peasantry economic entity to the vibrant third engine of economic growth contributing no less than US$5.63, 6.34, 7.75, and 8.48 billion …

What We Have & Have-Not : E-Government In Malaysia, S.M. Alhabshi
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
This chapter investigates the challenges and achievements of e-government development in Malaysia. After carefully examining the findings of egovernment ranking world over by the United Nations, The Centre of Public Policy, Brown University, United States of America and Waseda University Institute, Japan; disparities in Malaysia’s e-government ranking amongst the three institutions was evident. It is discernible that the different methodological criteria employed by these institutions served as one of the fundamental factors attributable to the varying results. However, findings from these institutions unearthed some major problems and challenges bedeviling egovernment in Malaysia. This chapter went further to examine the chemistry …

Accessibility Of Bay Area Rail Transit Stations: An Evaluation Of Opportunities For Transit Oriented Development, Kevin M. Fang
Master's Theses
Many groups have been pushing for a shift from automotive oriented transportation and land use, to transit-oriented transportation and land use. These groups have many valid reasons. However, just as it is fair to point out issues about auto travel, so too is it fair to see how transit performs at meeting certain goals. This paper examines the important characteristic of accessibility afforded to travelers. This is quantified through the calculation of accessibility indexes for stations, for the specific case of two existing rail systems and four proposed rail extensions in the San Francisco Bay Area.
As a whole, the …
Can Socialization Influence Identification Levels? Formal And Informal Socialization Of Graduate Students And Graduate Assistants, Tanna White
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Every organization has standard expectations for member behavior. Socialization ensures that employees learn the accepted ways of responding to each situation and the expected ways of working with others. Socialization may be formal, taking place during orientation meetings, training sessions, workshops, and with assigned mentors. Informal socialization, conversely, involves off-site meetings and social interactions as well as employees learning by watching their coworkers and supervisors (Cousins, Handfield, Lawson & Petersen, 2006; Mujtaba & Sims, 2006).
The Writer-Of-Violence-As-School-Shooter-Stereotype: How Columbine, Virginia Tech, And Public Fear Make Writing Violence Dangerous For High School And College Students, Matt Foy
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
This Time Magazine excerpt from “The Legacy of Columbine,” published on March 11, 2001, nearly two years after the infamous attack at Columbine High School, is a chilling reminder of the culture of fear that consumed the United States in the wake of the massacre, at that point the most horrific incident of gun violence in a United States school. The bloody rampage of teenage gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, respectively 18 and 17 years old and both seniors at upper class, mostly white Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, instantly captured the awe, grief and outrage of the …

Rules For Becoming A Graceful Woman: Rhetorical Analysis Of The Japanese Self-Help Book Grace Of Women, Kaori Yamada
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
People buy and read books to gain something they lack in their lives. One might read a novel to have fun, one might read a philosophy book to rethink his/her worldview, or one might read a how-to book to learn an easy process for self-improvement. Self-help books, in particular, are explicit instruction manuals for achieving personal and relational well being (Zimmerman, Holm, and Haddock 122). By analyzing popular self-help books, one can discover what people believe they might be lacking.
