The Effectiveness Of Sexual Assault Services In Multi-Service Agencies, Debra Patterson Sep 2009

The Effectiveness Of Sexual Assault Services In Multi-Service Agencies, Debra Patterson

Social Work Faculty Publications

Sexual assault is a pervasive social problem with 18% of women and 3% of men experiencing a completed or attempted assault during their lifetime. More than half of victimizations occur before the survivor reaches the age of eighteen (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). Research also shows that twothirds of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the survivor, such as an acquaintance, friend or intimate partner. In fact, approximately 15% of sexual assaults are committed by an intimate partner. Many sexual assault survivors experience multiple negative outcomes such as psychological distress, physical health problems, and difficulties in life functioning (Gutner, …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective This study evaluated microtensile bond strength (MTBS) of two newly developed self-etch adhesives compared to a two-step self-etch adhesive and a three-step total-etch adhesive, and determined the effect of surface moisture on MTBS of the new single-step self-etch adhesive. Materials and methods Twenty-five extracted human third molars were ground flat to expose mid-coronal dentin, and teeth were randomly divided into five experimental groups, which were Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose, Clearfil SE Bond, Adper SE Plus Self-Etch Adhesive, Adper Easy Bond Self-Etch Adhesive, and Adper Easy Bond Self-Etch Adhesive in moist condition groups. Cytotoxicity Of Two Thai White Portland Cements Mixed With Bismuth Oxide On Primary Human Osteoblasts, Thanomsuk Jearanaiphaisarn, Chootima Ratisoontorn

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective To compare the cytotoxicity of two Thai white portland cements mixed with bismuth oxide (PCA and PCB) with white mineral trioxide aggregate (white ProRoot® MTA) on primary human osteoblasts and to investigate cell morphology on the materials. Materials and methods PCA, PCB and white ProRoot® MTA were mixed with distilled water. Standard cylinder discs of each tested material were prepared. Primary human osteoblasts were exposed to material extracts on different extraction time points (days 1, 3, 7 and 14). Cell viability was assessed by using methyltetrazolium assay. Differences in mean percentage of cell viability were analyzed by one-way analysis …

Learn By Doing: A Collaborative Model For Training Teacher-Candidate Students In Autism, Michael B. Ruef, Nicolette Nefdt, Daniel Openden, Sharon Elmensdorp, Kathleen C. Harris, Suzanne Robinson

Graduate Studies in Education

A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource. With the large number of students with autism entering the educational system, the need for empirically supported treatment (EST) in the classroom and special education teachers with training in autism and ESTs is necessary now more than ever. This paper describes a collaborative model between 2 universities aimed at providing teacher-candidate graduate students training and community-based practice in an EST, pivotal response treatment (PRT). Three components of the model are described: (1) the community-based service delivery system, (2) the Masters/special education credential program and (3) training in PRT. Additionally, …

On-Campus Service Projects: An Experiment In Education For Liberation, Michael J. Gent Sep 2009

On-Campus Service Projects: An Experiment In Education For Liberation, Michael J. Gent

Organization Management Journal

This article describes an approach to service-learning based on Paulo Freire’s model of education for liberation. On-campus Service Projects (OCSPs) differ markedly from typical service-learning assignments in two ways: (1) they take place in the students’ own college setting rather than out in the community; and (2) in my version, they challenge students to engage in critical thinking and acting (praxis) to transform ‘‘oppressive’’ situations within their institution. The article reviews Freire’s pedagogical approach and details how it is implemented in OCSPs. Like all service-learning, the OCSP experience enables students to practice course-related skills (e.g., team building, project planning). More …

The Bustin' And Bitchin' Ethe Of Third-Wave Zines, Brenda M. Helmbrecht, Meredith A. Love Sep 2009

The Bustin' And Bitchin' Ethe Of Third-Wave Zines, Brenda M. Helmbrecht, Meredith A. Love

English

Our article seeks to integrate alternative voices into traditional rhetorical study by turning to Bitch and BUST, two mainstream zines that serve as dynamic examples of young women’s rhetoric in action. We believe these zines are shaping the present and future of women’s rhetoric. Their most significant contribution to the understanding of women’s rhetoric is located in the way they accommodate ethotic constructions that are at once contradictory and complementary. While these texts can seem abrasive and perhaps even outrageous, the ways in which the writers shape their ethe can teach rhetoricians and teachers of rhetoric and writing about the …

Shades Of Gray: Applying Professional Codes Of Ethics To Workplace Dilemmas, Valerie Christian, Andra Gumbus

Organization Management Journal

This paper offers five real-life case studies for exploring ethics in the management classroom. They come from the fields of international business/ strategy, human resources management, accounting, finance, and marketing. To spark critical thinking and provide additional information, students are presented with reflection questions and professional codes of practice that relate to the issues and actions described in each case. After the major piece of experiential learning activity has been completed, students are exposed to viewpoints from experts in the field, specifically how those experts would have handled the case situation themselves. Referenced ethical codes of practice are taken from …
