Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse
It is indeed great honour and pleasure for me to be spending this morning with you. I am quite cognizant of the fact that this is one of the finest institution Pakistan has and I always keep saying that if we had institutions like C & SC replicated in our civilian life, the country would be much better off, therefore, I commend you and I am sure that all of you would be rising stars of Pakistan Armed Forces and would make a contribution which is badly required for the uplift of the country. Gentlemen! I am going to talk …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2009-09-04, Wooster Voice Editors
The Voice: 2001-2011
This edition of the College of Wooster's student run newspaper was published on September 4 of 2009, and it is eight pages long. Duncan Jones, Wooster alum '95 and David Bowie's son, released his first feature film, a member of the Voice staff was able to do a phone interview with him. The first dance party of the year at the Underground (UG) did not end well, the students were disorderly and would not listen to the rules. Soup and Bread will be located in Mackey Hall this year. Holden Annex is closed this year. The new director for the …

Assets As A Resource Variable In The Stress Management Of Low-Income Families, David Rothwell, Chang-Keun Han
Assets As A Resource Variable In The Stress Management Of Low-Income Families, David Rothwell, Chang-Keun Han
Center for Social Development Research
The hard times resulting from the 2008 recession represent an opportunity to re-examine the theoretical framework for how families use economic resources to adjust and adapt to stress. Sherraden’s (1991) theory of assets and McCubbin and Patterson’s (1983) Family Adjustment and Adaptation Response (FAAR) model are used to demonstrate how assets relate to family stressors and demands among a sample of 839 low-income families. The negative relationship between assets and financial stressors and financial strain suggest that the expansion of social welfare policies promoting assets among low-income families may positively influence family relations. Future research on family relations would benefit …

Broad Range Amino Acid Specificity Of Rna-Dependent Lipid Remodelling By Multiple Peptide Resistance Factors, Hervé Roy, Michael Ibba
Broad Range Amino Acid Specificity Of Rna-Dependent Lipid Remodelling By Multiple Peptide Resistance Factors, Hervé Roy, Michael Ibba
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Aminoacylphosphatidylglycerol synthases (aaPGSs) are multiple peptide resistance factors that transfer amino acids from aminoacyl-tRNAs to phosphatidylglycerol (PG) in the cytoplasmic membrane. Aminoacylation of PG is used by bacteria to decrease the net negative charge of the cell envelope, diminishing affinity for charged molecules and allowing for adaptation to environmental changes. Lys-PGS, which transfers lysine to PG, is essential for the virulence of certain pathogens, providing resistance to both host cationic antimicrobial peptides and therapeutic antibiotics. Ala-PGS was also recently described, but little is known about the possible activities of other members of the highly diverse aaPGS family of proteins. Systematic …

Risk Assessment Model For Emergency Departments In Dublin Hospitals, Michael Thorwarth, Amr Arisha
Risk Assessment Model For Emergency Departments In Dublin Hospitals, Michael Thorwarth, Amr Arisha
Conference papers
The internal dynamics of emergency departments (ED) in Irish hospitals represent complex non-linear stochastic systems with an environment of uncertainty, variability and limited resources. Planning and managing such systems pose overwhelming demands. To improve operations, patient service, resource planning, and real-time reaction to unexpected events, sophisticated tools to efficiently achieve these goals must be applied.
Advanced solution techniques (e.g. simulation and optimisation) have been successfully applied in manufacturing operations to improve the delivery, cost-effectiveness and service quality. Yet, random arrival of patients, limited resources and multitasking are challenges in EDs that add more complexity to this critical area. This study …
