The Development Of An Unequal Social Safety Net: A Case Study Of The Employer-Based Health Insurance (Non) System, H. Luke Shaefer, Elizabeth D. Sammons Sep 2009

The Development Of An Unequal Social Safety Net: A Case Study Of The Employer-Based Health Insurance (Non) System, H. Luke Shaefer, Elizabeth D. Sammons

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The U.S. social safety net exacerbates labor market inequalities rather than ameliorating them. This paper traces this theme within an important historical case study: the emergence of the employer-based health insurance system. Employers became the dominant and tax-preferred provider of health insurance in the United States without any federal legislative action. Understanding how this happened may inform current reform efforts. This case study highlights two important factors. The first is path dependency, discussed by Skocpol (1992) and Pierson (2000). They argue that the ambiguous divisions of power and a pluralistic governance framework favor incremental processes of social policy formation in …

Deriving Optimal Composite Scores: Relating Observational/Longitudinal Data With A Primary Endpoint, Rhonda Ellis Sep 2009

Deriving Optimal Composite Scores: Relating Observational/Longitudinal Data With A Primary Endpoint, Rhonda Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

In numerous clinical/experimental studies, multiple endpoints are measured on each subject. It is often not clear which of these endpoints should be designated as of primary importance. The desirability function approach is a way of combining multiple responses into a single unitless composite score. The response variables may include multiple types of data: binary, ordinal, count, interval data. Each response variable is transformed to a 0 to1 unitless scale with zero representing a completely undesirable response and one representing the ideal value. In desirability function methodology, weights on individual components can be incorporated to allow different levels of importance to …

F-16 Ventral Fin Buffet Alleviation Using Piezoelectric Actuators, Joseph S. Browning Sep 2009

F-16 Ventral Fin Buffet Alleviation Using Piezoelectric Actuators, Joseph S. Browning

Theses and Dissertations

Buffet-induced vibrations can have a disastrous impact on aircraft structures. Early attempts at combating buffet vibrations included passive methods such as structural enhancements and leading edge fences. Active methods have shown greater promise, including active airflow control, control surface modulation, and active structural control using piezoelectric actuators. Surface mounted piezoelectric actuators impart directional strain reducing the negative effects associated with harmful vibration. The Block-15 F-16 ventral fin represents an aircraft structure prone to failure when subjected to the buffet field from the wake of a LANTIRN pod. This research takes advantage of the susceptibility to buffet vibration of the Block …

Giant Adrenal Endothelial Cyst Associated With Acute And Chronic Morbidity In A Young Female: A Case Report., Muhammad Rizwan Khan, Saad Ajmal, Taimur Saleem Sep 2009

Giant Adrenal Endothelial Cyst Associated With Acute And Chronic Morbidity In A Young Female: A Case Report., Muhammad Rizwan Khan, Saad Ajmal, Taimur Saleem

Department of Surgery Docs

Adrenal cysts are rare clinical entities that can present as acute abdomen through rupture and internal hemorrhage as well as chronic symptoms such as gastrointestinal disturbances. A 20-year-old girl presented to our hospital with a 4-years history of abdominal pain and diarrhea. Ultrasound of the abdomen revealed a cystic area measuring 10 x 10 cm between the spleen and left kidney. Computed tomography scan showed a large cystic, homogeneous mass measuring 12.8 x 9.5 x 9.4 cm in the left hypochondrium with most likely origin from the left adrenal gland. Limited work up for hormone hypersecretion was negative. The Patient …

Designing A Simulation For Student Evaluation Using Scriven's Key Evaluation Checklist, Shelly Jensen Reed Sep 2009

Designing A Simulation For Student Evaluation Using Scriven's Key Evaluation Checklist, Shelly Jensen Reed

Faculty Publications

Human patient simulation use has increased dramatically in nursing education over the past 10 years, with many benefits. One advantage is that it allows students to learn by practicing skills in a risk-free environment, with immediate faculty feedback. Another benefit is that it prepares and ensures the competence of student nurses, leading to improved patient safety outcomes. Student opinions gathered in a survey of nursing schools and simulator centers favored use of competency evaluation using simulation in at least some circumstances. As little research concerning use of simulation to evaluate student competency can be found, an established guide such as …

Impairments In Attention In Occasionally Snoring Children: An Event-Related Potential Study., Maria E. Barnes, Elizabeth A. Huss, Krista N. Garrod, Eric Van Ray, Ehab Dayyat, David Gozal, Dennis L. Molfese Sep 2009

Impairments In Attention In Occasionally Snoring Children: An Event-Related Potential Study., Maria E. Barnes, Elizabeth A. Huss, Krista N. Garrod, Eric Van Ray, Ehab Dayyat, David Gozal, Dennis L. Molfese

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Objective: To determine whether minimal snoring is benign in children. Procedure: 22 rarely snoring children (mean age = 6.9 years, 11 females) and age- and sex-matched controls participated in an auditory oddball task wearing 128-electrode nets. Parents completed the Conners Parent Rating Scales–Revised Long (CPRS–R:L). Results: Snorers scored significantly higher on four CPRS-R:L subscales. Stepwise regression indicated that two ERP variables from a region of the ERP that peaked at 844 msec post-stimulus onset predicted CPRS-R:L Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Index scores. Conclusions: Occasional snorers, according to parental report, do exhibit ADHD-like behaviors. Basic sensory processing is longer than …
