Redefining Cpg Islands Using A Hideen Markov Model, Hao Wu, Brain Caffo, Harris A. Jaffee, Andrew P. Feinberg, Rafael A. Irizarry

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

The DNA of most vertebrates is depleted in CpG dinucleotides; C followed by a G in the 5’ to 3’ direction. CpGs are the target for DNA methylation, a chemical modification of cytosine (C) heritable during cell division and the most well characterized epigenetic mechanism. The remaining CpGs tend to cluster in regions referred to as CpG islands (CGI). Knowing CGI locations is important because they mark functionally relevant epigenetic loci in development and disease. For various mammals, including human, a readily available and widely used list of CGI is available from the UCSC Genome Browser. This list was derived …

Mindfulness Training And Stress Reactivity In Substance Abuse: A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Study, Justin Albert Chen Sep 2009

Mindfulness Training And Stress Reactivity In Substance Abuse: A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Study, Justin Albert Chen

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

MINDFULNESS TRAINING AND STRESS REACTIVITY IN SUBSTANCE ABUSE: A RANDOMIZED, CONTROLLED PILOT STUDY. Justin A. Chen, Judson A. Brewer. Department of Psychiatry, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. There is substantial evidence for the central role of stress in the inception and maintenance of substance use disorders. The use of mindfulness training (MT) has demonstrated promise in a number of stress-related conditions. However, no studies to date have compared MT to empirically validated treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for substance use disorders or assessed its impact on response to stress provocation. The specific aim of this …

Repeals Recent Legislation That Would Allow Businesses To Carry Back Losses, Share Tax Credits, And Use A Sales-Based Income Calculation. Initiative Statute

Initiatives

Repeals recent legislation that would allow businesses to shift operating losses to prior tax years, and would allow corporations to share tax credits with affiliated corporations, to lower taxable income. Repeals recent legislation that would allow multistate businesses to use a sales-based income calculation, rather than a combination property-, payroll- and sales-based income calculation, to reduce taxable income. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Annual state revenue increase from business taxes of about $1.7 billion when fully phased in, beginning in 2011-12.

Para Mantener La Salud [9th-11th Grade], Maria S. Allen

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

Food and nutrition are an integral part in the study of a country’s lifestyle. There are many factors that influence the diet and exercise regimen of a nation and its culture. Some of these factors include diet and exercise. In understanding a region’s culture, one must compare how our own lifestyle is affected by the diversity of cultures here in the United States. To encourage this understanding, students must be aware of the cultural similarities and differences of these lifestyles. Students will be exposed to ideas about nutrition and exercise based on a global comparison of the eating and exercise …

Detecting Marine Hazardous Substances And Organisms: Sensors For Pollutants, Toxins, And Pathogens, O. Zielinski, J. A. Busch, A. D. Cembella, Kendra L. Daly, J. Engelbrektsson, A. K. Hannides, H. Schmidt

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Marine environments are influenced by a wide diversity of anthropogenic and natural substances and organisms that may have adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. Real-time measurements of pollutants, toxins, and pathogens across a range of spatial scales are required to adequately monitor these hazards, manage the consequences, and to understand the processes governing their magnitude and distribution. Significant technological advancements have been made in recent years for the detection and analysis of such marine hazards. In particular, sensors deployed on a variety of mobile and fixed-point observing platforms provide a valuable means to assess hazards. In this review, we …

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

The United Nations Development Program seeks to eliminate poverty by promoting economic growth among underdeveloped and developing nations. Professionals within the organization strive to improve education, health standards, and infrastructure of these nations in order to boost standards of living. Because the majority of Latin America consists of developing nations, equipping the next generation with the basic Spanish language skills and economic knowledge to address the issues of our world’s poorest nations is imperative. Through collaborative efforts, we can address the Millennium Development Goals of alleviating the disease and poverty that pervade these countries. In this interdisciplinary unit, students will …

High Efficiency Lipid-Based Sirna Transfection Of Adipocytes In Suspension, Gail Kilroy, David H. Burk, Z. Elizabeth Floyd Sep 2009

High Efficiency Lipid-Based Sirna Transfection Of Adipocytes In Suspension, Gail Kilroy, David H. Burk, Z. Elizabeth Floyd

Faculty Publications

Background: Fully differentiated adipocytes are considered to be refractory to introduction of siRNA via lipid-based transfection. However, large scale siRNA-based loss-of-function screening of adipocytes using either electroporation or virally-mediated transfection approaches can be prohibitively complex and expensive. Methodology/Principal Findings: We present a method for introducing small interfering RNA (siRNA) into differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes and primary human adipocytes using an approach based on forming the siRNA/ cell complex with the adipocytes in suspension rather than as an adherent monolayer, a variation of "reverse transfection". Conclusions/Significance: Transfection of adipocytes with siRNA by this method is economical, highly efficient, has a simple workflow, …

Exploring The Effect Of Sexual Education On Sexual Health Risk Behaviors: Analysis Of The 2003 And 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Surveys In Florida And Alabama, Shenena Armstrong, Alicestine Ashford, Ivette A. López, C. Perry Brown

Florida Public Health Review

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between sexual health education content and sexual health risk behaviors, and the mediating effect of demographic variables. A cross-sectional research design employing secondary data analysis explored these associations in a sample of African American and non-Hispanic White male and female adolescents that took part in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) for the years 2003 and 2007 in the aforementioned southern states. Significant associations were observed between race and reported condom use and alcohol and/or drug use during last intercourse. For both Alabama and Florida, sexual health education was associated …
