In Case You Missed It: The Beijing Of Possibilities, Xujun Eberlein

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Earlier this year, we ran two excerpts from Jonathan Tel’s (then forthcoming) collection of short stories, The Beijing of Possibilities (the excerpts were “Year of the Gorilla” and “Though the Candles Flicker Red“). Author (and occasional China Beat contributor) Xujun Eberlein recently reviewed the collection at her blog,Inside-Out China, and has allowed us to repost her review in full below.

Chinese stories can be exotic to foreigners, while a foreigner telling stories about China can be exotic to the natives of the land as well. In recent years, there has been no shortage of nonfiction books set in Beijing written …

Togo: Irrigation Research, Michael Doenges, Sally Homsy, Marie-Claire Tuzeneu Sep 2009

Togo: Irrigation Research, Michael Doenges, Sally Homsy, Marie-Claire Tuzeneu

ETHOS Technical Reports

A team of UD students conducted in-depth research concerning the construction of an irrigation system in a small village in central Togo (Sotouboua). The results of this research illustrated that a drip irrigation system would be the most appropriate and feasible choice considering the conditions of the fields and the village itself. Upon arrival in Togo, however, it became evident that there were many more pressing issues that needed to be addressed before an irrigation system could be built. A report was compiled to ensure that future ETHOS students placed in Togo will have the necessary information to prepare for …

Suicide Attempts Among Latinas Who Experienced Early Sex Were Largely Mediated By Substance Abuse, Patria Rojas, Sunny Kim, Mario De La Rosa, Wayway M. Hlaing, Theophille Niyonsenga Sep 2009

Suicide Attempts Among Latinas Who Experienced Early Sex Were Largely Mediated By Substance Abuse, Patria Rojas, Sunny Kim, Mario De La Rosa, Wayway M. Hlaing, Theophille Niyonsenga

Florida Public Health Review

The purpose of this study was to describe the role of substance abuse as a mediating factor between early sexual experiences and suicide attempts among adult Latinas. In our study participants (n=158), nearly 15% had attempted suicide and 39% experienced their first sexual encounter at an age of 15 or younger (referred to hereafter as “early sex”). Latinas who experienced early sex were more likely to attempt suicide [OR=2.4, p<0.05], and this relationship was largely mediated by substance abuse. An early sexual debut may indicate an environmental adversity on the child that calls for long term intervention for prevention of substance abuse as well as promotion of psychological well-being later in life.

Popping Britney's Personal Safety Bubble: Why Proposed Anti-Paparazzi Ordinances In Los Angeles Cannot Withstand First Amendment Scrutiny, Gary Wax Sep 2009

Popping Britney's Personal Safety Bubble: Why Proposed Anti-Paparazzi Ordinances In Los Angeles Cannot Withstand First Amendment Scrutiny, Gary Wax

Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review

Lawmakers in Los Angeles and in surrounding cities recently proposed the creation of personal safety zones around celebrities to curtail the activities of overly aggressive paparazzi. Nevertheless, First Amendment jurisprudence has generally protected photographers from civil invasion of privacy claims in public, assuming the photographer did not commit any independent crime or tort, especially where the subject matter of the photograph is a matter of public concern. Celebrities are "public figures," and are thus subject to news coverage protected by the First Amendment absent false malicious speech. Furthermore, celebrities who choose to live in celebrity-enclaves in the Los Angeles area …

Phosphoinositides And Snare Chaperones Synergistically Assemble And Remodel Snare Complexes For Membrane Fusion, Joji Mima, William Wickner Sep 2009

Phosphoinositides And Snare Chaperones Synergistically Assemble And Remodel Snare Complexes For Membrane Fusion, Joji Mima, William Wickner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Yeast vacuole fusion requires 4 SNAREs, 2 SNARE chaperone systems (Sec17p/Sec18p/ATP and the HOPS complex), and 2 phosphoinositides, phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate [PI(3)P] and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate [PI(4,5)P2]. By reconstituting proteoliposomal fusion with purified components, we now show that phosphoinositides have 4 distinct roles: PI(3)P is recognized by the PX domain of the SNARE Vam7p; PI(3)P enhances the capacity of membrane-bound SNAREs to drive fusion in the absence of SNARE chaperones; either PI(3)P or PI(4,5)P2 can activate SNARE chaperones for the recruitment of Vam7p into fusion-competent SNARE complexes; and either PI(3)P or PI(4,5)P2 strikingly promotes synergistic SNARE complex remodeling …

Spatially Uniform Relieff (Surf) For Computationally-Efficient Filtering Of Gene-Gene Interactions, Casey S. Greene, Nadia M. Penrod, Jeff Kiralis, Jason H. Moore Sep 2009

Spatially Uniform Relieff (Surf) For Computationally-Efficient Filtering Of Gene-Gene Interactions, Casey S. Greene, Nadia M. Penrod, Jeff Kiralis, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Genome-wide association studies are becoming the de facto standard in the genetic analysis of common human diseases. Given the complexity and robustness of biological networks such diseases are unlikely to be the result of single points of failure but instead likely arise from the joint failure of two or more interacting components. The hope in genome-wide screens is that these points of failure can be linked to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) which confer disease susceptibility. Detecting interacting variants that lead to disease in the absence of single-gene effects is difficult however, and methods to exhaustively analyze sets of these variants …

Use Of The Chambira Palm (Astrocaryum Chambira) In Rainforest Communities Of The Peruvian Amazon, Anel Guel, Jim Penn Sep 2009

Use Of The Chambira Palm (Astrocaryum Chambira) In Rainforest Communities Of The Peruvian Amazon, Anel Guel, Jim Penn

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

We proposed to research the use of chambira palm fibers and the sale of chambira crafts in four communities located about 100 miles from the city of Iquitos, Peru. In this part of the Peruvian Amazon, women are organized into groups that work to obtain the fibers and sell their products in a sustainable way, and at the same time promote the cultivation of the palm trees in their family gardens. As is the case with so many products from tropical forests, there is great geographic variation in the abundance of the resource (chambira) and variation in the amount of …

The Human Rna Polymerase Ii-Associated Factor 1 (Hpaf1): A New Regulator Of Cell-Cycle Progression., Nicolas Moniaux, Christophe Nemos, Shonali Deb, Bing Zhu, Irena Dornreiter, Michael A. Hollingsworth, Surinder K. Batra Sep 2009

The Human Rna Polymerase Ii-Associated Factor 1 (Hpaf1): A New Regulator Of Cell-Cycle Progression., Nicolas Moniaux, Christophe Nemos, Shonali Deb, Bing Zhu, Irena Dornreiter, Michael A. Hollingsworth, Surinder K. Batra

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

BACKGROUND: The human PAF (hPAF) complex is part of the RNA polymerase II transcription apparatus and regulates multiple steps in gene expression. Further, the yeast homolog of hPaf1 has a role in regulating the expression of a subset of genes involved in the cell-cycle. We therefore investigated the role of hPaf1 during progression of the cell-cycle.

METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: Herein, we report that the expression of hPaf1, a subunit of the hPAF complex, increases with cell-cycle progression and is regulated in a cell-cycle dependant manner. hPaf1 specifically regulates a subclass of genes directly implicated in cell-cycle progression during G1/S, S/G2, and G2/M. …
