Tetrabromobisphenol A Has Immunosuppressive Effects On Human Natural Killer Cells, Esther Caroline Kibakaya, Krishna Stephen, Margaret M. Whalen Oct 2009

Tetrabromobisphenol A Has Immunosuppressive Effects On Human Natural Killer Cells, Esther Caroline Kibakaya, Krishna Stephen, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Human natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes that destroy tumor cells, virally-infected cells, and antibody-coated cells. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is used both as a reactive and as an additive flame retardant in a variety of materials and appears to contaminate the environment. TBBPA has been found in human blood samples and if it interferes with NK cell function, this could increase the risk of tumor development and/or viral infection. The present study examines the effects of exposure to various concentrations of TBBPA for 24 hr, 48 hr, and 6 days on the lytic function, tumor-target-binding function, and ATP levels of …

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

Objective Pilot a group assignment using blogs and wikis to develop evidence-based medicine skills in third year medical students on an internal medicine clerkship. Instead of the clerkship’s previous individual ten-page paper assignment, the students were divided into four groups of sixteen. During the clerkship, students are on geographically dispersed rotations. The earlier ten-page paper had required the students to complete a patient history and physical write-up. With the pilot project, each group was assigned a librarian and a physician faculty mentor. Each student recorded on the blog a clinical scenario and question they encountered. They were encouraged to communicate …

Progressive Fatigue Effects On Manual Lifting Factors, Anthony D. Banks, Fereydoun Aghazadeh Oct 2009

Progressive Fatigue Effects On Manual Lifting Factors, Anthony D. Banks, Fereydoun Aghazadeh

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of progressive fatigue on factors that previously have been associated with increased risk of low back pain in various occupational settings, during a repetitive lifting task where a freestyle lifting technique was used. A laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate electromyography amplitude, kinematic, and kinetic parameters of repetitive freestyle lifting during a 2-hour lifting period. Subjective fatigue rating increased over time, indicating that the participant "felt" increasingly fatigued as the experiment progressed. Static composite strength decreased an average of 20% from the beginning to the end of the experiment. Effect …

Marginal Lands And Suburban Nature: Open Space Planning And The Case Of The 1893 Boston Metropolitan Parks Plan, Steven Thomas Moga Oct 2009

Marginal Lands And Suburban Nature: Open Space Planning And The Case Of The 1893 Boston Metropolitan Parks Plan, Steven Thomas Moga

Landscape Studies: Faculty Publications

Soon after publication, the 1893 Boston Metropolitan Parks Report came to be regarded as a model plan for American cities. Little known to the public today, it is frequently cited by landscape and planning historians as a testament to the vision of “pioneer” landscape architect Charles Eliot and metropolitan planning advocate Sylvester Baxter. However, planning historians have overlooked key aspects of the plan and omitted significant details about the authors’ redevelopment and planning goals. I argue that Eliot and Baxter viewed open space planning as a means of combating slums and establishing a regionwide land use template for future growth.
