Reactivity And Distortions In The Self: Narcissism, Types Of Aggression, And The Functioning Of The Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal Axis During Early Adolescence, William M. Bukowski, Alex Schwartzman, Jonathan Bruce Santo, Catherine Bagwell, Ryan Adams

Psychology Faculty Publications

A multisample, multistudy project aimed at understanding how individual differences in narcissism during early adolescence are related to distortions in the aggression, and the reactivity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis to negative and positive experiences. The findings indicate that individual differences in narcissism are a remarkably stable aspect of personality during early adolescence. It is predictably related to an inflated view of the self that is not warranted by objective indices of social functioning. Further evidence shows that it promotes the continuity of aggressive behavior and is more strongly related to reactive aggression than to proactive aggression and more strongly related …

Quasi-Least Squares With Mixed Linear Correlation Structures, Jichun Xie, Justine Shults, Jon Peet, Dwight Stambolian, Mary F. Cotch Oct 2009

Quasi-Least Squares With Mixed Linear Correlation Structures, Jichun Xie, Justine Shults, Jon Peet, Dwight Stambolian, Mary F. Cotch

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Quasi-least squares (QLS) is a two-stage computational approach for estimation of the correlation parameters in the framework of generalized estimating equations (GEE). We prove two general results for the class of mixed linear correlation structures: namely, that the stage one QLS estimate of the correlation parameter always exists and is feasible (yields a positive definite estimated correlation matrix) for any correlation structure, while the stage two estimator exists and is unique (and therefore consistent) with probability one, for the class of mixed linear correlation structures. Our general results justify the implementation of QLS for particular members of the class of …

Nurse-Patient Communication In Oncology Setting: A Phenomenological Study Of Trust From Patients' Perspectives, Julia B. Havelick Oct 2009

Nurse-Patient Communication In Oncology Setting: A Phenomenological Study Of Trust From Patients' Perspectives, Julia B. Havelick

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A phenomenological study was performed to explore trust within the contexts of nurse-patient relationships with oncology patients. Specifically, the present study explored trust within these relationships in oncology settings. Former and current patients were interviewed to determine their experiences of being trusted (or distrusted) by nurses. Four themes were derived from interviews: competence, personal attention, comfort and communication. Communication and competence were themes that were shown to most increase trust. Incompetence was shown to decrease trust. Nurses who appeared too busy did not instill trust either. Touch, positive facial expressions, and physical appearance increased trust. Non-verbal communication that decreased trust …
