Interest Groups And The Problem With Incrementalism, Saul Levmore Nov 2009

Interest Groups And The Problem With Incrementalism, Saul Levmore

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Incrementalism, as opposed to dramatic change, is conventionally lauded in law as the prudent path of change--a path that gives credit to history and precedent. But the conventional view pays little attention to interest groups. Step-by-step change poses a serious problem when it alters the constellation of supporters and opponents of further moves. The core problem is that once an interest group loses and becomes subject to some regulation, it has reason to turn on its competitors and encourage that they be similarly regulated. The laws that emerge on the incrementalist's path may therefore not mark progress toward socially desirable …

Acid Rain: The Effects, Torrey Mortimer Nov 2009

Acid Rain: The Effects, Torrey Mortimer

Social Sciences

In a world experiencing increasing population, urbanization, and developing nations looking to compete on a global market with post-industrial nations, the effects of acid precipitation require greater consideration. As the world’s energy demand rises, and with the cheapest and most abundant source of energy being coal, the occurrence of acid precipitation is on the rise.

The goal of my project is to research and report on the effects of acid deposition on humans, animals and the environment that surrounds them. When I have completed my project, I hope to be able to explain the impacts that acid deposition has on …

Cross-Sectional Dating Of Novel Haplotypes Of Herv-K 113 And Herv-K 115 Indicate These Proviruses Originated In Africa Before Homo Sapiens, Aashish Jha, Satish Pillai, Vanessa York, Elizabeth Sharp, Emily Storm, Douglas Wachter, Jeffrey Martin, Steven Deeks, Michael Rosenberg, Douglas Nixon, Keith Garrison

School of Science Faculty Works

The human genome, human endogenous retroviruses (HERV), of which HERV-K113 and HERV-K115 are the only known full-length proviruses that are insertionally polymorphic. Although a handful of previously published papers have documented their prevalence in the global population; to date, there has been no report on their prevalence in the United States population. Here, we studied the geographic distribution of K113 and K115 among 156 HIV-1+ subjects from the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics, and Caucasians. In the individuals studied, we found higher insertion frequencies of K113 (21%) and K115 (35%) in African Americans compared with Caucasians (K113 9% and …

Effects Of Acute And Chronic Endurance Exercise On Intracellular Nitric Oxide In Putative Endothelial Progenitor Cells: Role Of Napdh Oxidase, Nathan T. Jenkins, Sarah Witkowski, Espen E. Spangenburg, James M. Hagberg Nov 2009

Effects Of Acute And Chronic Endurance Exercise On Intracellular Nitric Oxide In Putative Endothelial Progenitor Cells: Role Of Napdh Oxidase, Nathan T. Jenkins, Sarah Witkowski, Espen E. Spangenburg, James M. Hagberg

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

We sought to delineate the effects of acute and chronic exercise on the regulation of intracellular nitric oxide (NOi) production in putative endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Putative EPC colony-forming units (CFUEC) were cultured from blood drawn before and after 30 min of treadmill exercise at 75% of maximal oxygen uptake in active (n = 8) and inactive (n = 8) men. CFU-EC were similar between groups at baseline, but increased after exercise in active men only (P = 0.04). CFU-EC expressed lower NADPH oxidase subunit gp91 phox mRNA and elevated endothelial nitric oxide synthase mRNA in active relative to inactive …

Gendering The Internally Displaced: Problem Bodies, Fluid Boundaries And Politics Of Civil Society Participation In Sri Lanka, Sandya Hewamanne Nov 2009

Gendering The Internally Displaced: Problem Bodies, Fluid Boundaries And Politics Of Civil Society Participation In Sri Lanka, Sandya Hewamanne

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this paper I argue that the internally displaced Muslim women’s experience of displacement and their perception of new developments since the last round of peace initiative between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE are significantly different from their male counterparts in that the women find these experiences as empowering in some respects. The paper also evidence that this empowerment is differently experienced by women belonging to different social classes. Women have been identified as a problem body within the Muslim community and restrictions on Muslim women have been justified through discourses on family honor and frivolous women. The …

Where Souls Are Forgotten: Cultural Competencies, Forensic Evaluations, And International Human Rights, Michael L. Perlin, Valerie Mcclain Nov 2009

Where Souls Are Forgotten: Cultural Competencies, Forensic Evaluations, And International Human Rights, Michael L. Perlin, Valerie Mcclain

Articles & Chapters

Cultural competency is critical in criminal forensic evaluations. Cultural competency eschews reliance on stereotype, precluding the mistake of assuming that cultural dictates apply with equal force to all who share a cultural background, thus allowing the forensic examiner to provide a comprehensive picture of the defendant to the factfinder. While raised frequently in death penalty cases, it is equally important to the entire criminal process. Cultural sensitivity in test selection and interview techniques that enhance validity of results are addressed. In a parallel fashion, ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has drawn importance to …

The Kenyan Woman: Her Historical Relationship With The State, Rosalia Wanja Ngugi Nov 2009

The Kenyan Woman: Her Historical Relationship With The State, Rosalia Wanja Ngugi

Theses and Dissertations

The historical relationship between the Kenyan state and women provides lessons and insight as to how women in a colonized state relate to the government and the gains, or lack thereof, that exist. Kenyan women were critical in the nationalist movement that intensified in the 1950s, culminating in independence in 1963. Some women fought in the forests and others were information and food distributors. Many women played a role in furthering the nationalist movement. Independence promised fruits that few women received. Through a historical analysis and an understanding of two women's organizations in Kenya, Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization and The …

Effect Of Cecropia Polyphlebia, Cecropia Obtusifolia, And Bidens Pilosa On Human Lung Capacity, November 2009, Michelle Gin

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Traditional medicine is used by 80% of the world population as their primary care. Monteverde, Costa Rica houses a rich flora including Cecropia polyphlebia (Cecropiaceae), Cecropia obtusifolia (Cecropiaceae), and Bidens pilosa (Asteraceae) that have been identified as medicinal plants to reduce the symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments. Fifty-eight human subjects were divided into four groups of tea treatments, including Chamomile Chamaemelum nobile (Asteraceae) as a control. Lung capacity was measured using the amount of air blown into a balloon in a single breath. Initial (pre-treatment) as well as the immediate and long-term effects of plant extracts on lung …

Homegardens Of Monteverde: Exploring Changes In Home Crop Cultivation, November 2009, Abigail Smith Nov 2009

Homegardens Of Monteverde: Exploring Changes In Home Crop Cultivation, November 2009, Abigail Smith

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Homegardens are model forms of sustainable land use in tropical agroforestry systems. Known as an assembly of varied crops and animals, these small homestead farms provide a cheap, nutritional source of food to the family while maintaining the biodiversity and productivity of the surrounding ecosystem. With the introduction of ecotourism into the Monteverde area, an economy traditionally based on agriculture shifted towards tourism services, thus changing the underlying dynamics of the community. Thirty families of the Monteverde area were interviewed and provided information relating to homegarden contents, family history, and lifestyle choices. This study shows that homegardens have declined significantly …

Quantification Of The Individual Characteristics Of The Human Dentition, L Thomas Johnson, Thomas W. Radmer, Thomas S. Wirtz, Nicholas M. Pajewski, David E. Cadle, James Brozek, Daniel D. Blinka

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

The considerations for admissibility suggested by the Daubert trilogy challenge forensic experts to provide scientific support for opinion testimony. The defense bar has questioned the reliability of bitemark analysis. Under an award from the U. S. Department of Justice, via the Midwest Forensic Resource Center, a two-year feasibility study was undertaken to quantify six dental characteristics. Using two computer programs, the exemplars of 419 volunteers were digitally scanned, characteristics were measured, and frequency was calculated. The study demonstrates that there were outliers or rare dental characteristics in measurements. An analysis of the intra-observer and inter-observer consistency demonstrated a high degree …
