Simulation Study Of Emerging Well Control Methods For Influxes Caused By Bottomhole Pressure Fluctuations During Managed Pressure Drilling, Hakan Guner Jan 2009

Simulation Study Of Emerging Well Control Methods For Influxes Caused By Bottomhole Pressure Fluctuations During Managed Pressure Drilling, Hakan Guner

LSU Master's Theses

Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is an emerging drilling technology that utilizes mud weight, surface backpressure and annular frictional pressure loss (AFP) to precisely control the wellbore pressure. The goal of this project is to identify the most appropriate initial response and kick circulation method for the kicks that result from complications specific to MPD. These complications that can cause a reduction in bottomhole pressure were classified as surface equipment failures and unintended equivalent circulating density (ECD) reductions. Rotating control device (RCD) and pump failures are the examples of surface equipment failures. Pump efficiency loss and BHA position change represent the …

Well Leg Compartment Syndrome: The Debit Side Of Hemilithotomy Position, Shahryar Noordin, Salim Allana, Muhammad Abdul Wajid Jan 2009

Well Leg Compartment Syndrome: The Debit Side Of Hemilithotomy Position, Shahryar Noordin, Salim Allana, Muhammad Abdul Wajid

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

We describe a case of well leg compartment syndrome following unilateral lithotomy position in a patient undergoing contralateral antegrade intramedullary femoral nailing. Following two-incision four compartment fasciotomy, the patient recovered with no residual defects. We dissuade use of the hemilithotomy position for antegrade femoral nailing procedures in favour of another previously described position, because this predisposes patients to position-associated complications without offering any substantial advantage.

Impact Of Land Fragmentation And Resource Ownership On Productivity And Efficiency: The Case Of Rice Producers In Bangladesh, S Rahman, M Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The paper analyzes the impact of land fragmentation and ownership of resources on productivity and technical efficiency in rice production in Bangladesh using farm level survey data. Results reveal that land fragmentation has a significant detrimental effect on productivity and efficiency as expected. The elasticity estimates of land fragmentation reveal that a 1% increase in land fragmentation reduces rice output by 0.05% and efficiency by 0.03%. On the other hand, ownership of key resources (land, family labour, and draft animals) significantly increases efficiency. The mean elasticity estimates reveal that a 1% increase in family labour and owned draft animal improve …

The purpose of this study was to examine the retail food environment, access to food, and food security in Missoula, Montana in relation to the socioeconomic and health status of its residents.

This study was conducted in four neighborhoods based on the average median family income level of each neighborhood as defined by …

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi: Factors Affecting Soil Organic Matter Storage, Carl Lee Rosier Jan 2009

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi: Factors Affecting Soil Organic Matter Storage, Carl Lee Rosier

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are soil fungi forming symbiotic associations with majority of land plants. AMF alter soil organic matter (SOM) directly through stabilization of soil aggregates and indirectly providing a path in which plant fixed C02 is transferred below-ground. Understanding contributions of AMF to SOM via protein production and stabilization of soil aggregates will greatly aid our understanding of soil carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling and mitigation of soil erosion. The work presented in chapter 2 challenges the glomalin extraction process and assesses the accuracy of the Bradford and monoclonal-antibody ELISA detection methods. My results clarify the contribution of glomalin …

Ethnic Fertility Differentials In Vietnam And Their Proximate Determinants, Sajeda Amin, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan Jan 2009

Ethnic Fertility Differentials In Vietnam And Their Proximate Determinants, Sajeda Amin, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Southeast Asia‘s rapid economic growth and demographic change have brought divergent fertility behaviors, particularly those of socially excluded groups, into sharper focus. In Vietnam, while the majority Vietnamese and ethnic Chinese, who together account for 85 percent of the country‘s population and benefit the most from the country‘s economic progress, have achieved replacement fertility, certain ethnic minority groups still have total fertility rates exceeding 4. This paper explores proximate determinants of fertility across ethnic groups using a new classification system for ethnicity in Vietnam based on poverty indicators, location, and degree of assimilation of ethnic groups. We decompose components of …

The Taiwan Question And The One-China Policy: Legal Challenges With Renewed Momentum, Pasha L. Hsieh Jan 2009

The Taiwan Question And The One-China Policy: Legal Challenges With Renewed Momentum, Pasha L. Hsieh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The question of Taiwan’s status has faced legal challenges from the one- China policy under both domestic law and international law. The article argues that the state status of the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan has never ceased to exist as a result of either the loss of diplomatic recognition or the United Nations Resolution 2758, which transferred the UN seat from the ROC to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). In the past decades, the ROC and the PRC possess separate statehoods and have co-existed under the “de jure roof of China.” The evolvement of state practice of …

Jicarilla Apache Nation Tribal Court Handbook (2009), Tribal Law Journal Staff Jan 2009

Jicarilla Apache Nation Tribal Court Handbook (2009), Tribal Law Journal Staff

Tribal Law Journal

This handbook helps take some of the mystery out of practicing in tribal courts. Without the necessary information to learn new rules and protocols many attorneys are understandably reluctant to practice in a new jurisdiction. As a result, tribal courts are underused or misused. This handbook is intended to help attorneys and advocates become more aware of the various individual tribal court systems and to learn their rules and protocol.

Burrell V. Armijo: The Role Of Comity In Federal Court Review Of Tribal Court Judgments, Erin Garcia Jan 2009

Burrell V. Armijo: The Role Of Comity In Federal Court Review Of Tribal Court Judgments, Erin Garcia

Tribal Law Journal

This article discusses the on-going issue of tribal versus federal judicial power. While tribal courts have been recognized as an important aspect of tribal sovereignty, federal precedent has diluted tribal authority. This dilution of authority is evident by the restriction on jurisdiction given to the tribal courts by the federal government. The author explores this issue using the case of Burrell v. Armijo. She contends that this Tenth Circuit case demonstrates the continued undermining of tribal jurisdiction and that the general rule for federal courts to give great deference to tribal courts was not properly applied, leading to continued weakening …

Australian Aboriginality And Sociobiology, Allan Ardill Jan 2009

Australian Aboriginality And Sociobiology, Allan Ardill

Tribal Law Journal

“It has been argued elsewhere that the colonization, dispossession, and oppression of indigenous Australians have a close nexus with biological determinism, scientific racism, and the ideology known as sociobiology. In the United States similar arguments are made concerning the historic maltreatment meted out to African Americans. In Australia, the concern is with the continuing colonial control over the identity of Australian Aboriginal people.” In his essay Dr. Ardill explores indigenous Australian identity and its “reciprocal relationship with health, education, poverty, (loss of) language, native title, sovereignty and self-determination.” He argues “that the legal reasoning underpinning colonial control over Aboriginal identity …

Talk About “Hooking Up”: How College Students‟ Accounts Of “Hooking Up” In Social Networks Influences Engaging In Risky Sexual Behavior, Amanda J. Olson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The study focused on how narratives told among social network participants can create a “culture of encouragement” surrounding risky sexual short-term relationships. The study adopted a social network approach to examine the “hookup” culture and risky sexual behavior. Specifically, this study examines who students are talking to, how frequently they discuss sexual experiences, and the specific accounts they discuss in connection with the hookup culture. Two research questions were asked to understand participants‟ personal definitions of hooking up and what factors lead to engaging in a hookup. The researcher also hypothesized that network closeness, frequency, and range would influence an …

In contrast to previous work, our preliminary results indicate B72.3 expression cannot be reliably used to identify GIC. A lack of CEA expression, however, may be used to identify both gastric and duodenal contamination. This represents an important diagnostic aid in the evaluation of suspected low-grade mucinous lesions.

BACKGROUND: In oviparous vertebrates, including fish, vitellogenesis consists of highly regulated pathways involving 17beta-estradiol (E2). Previous studies focused on a relatively small number of hepatic expressed genes during vitellogenesis. This study aims to identify hepatic genes involved in vitellogenesis and regulated by E2, by using zebrafish microarray gene expression profiling, and to provide information on functional distinctive genes expressed in the liver of a vitellogenic female, using zebrafish as a model fish. RESULTS: Genes associated with vitellogenesis were revealed by the following paired t-tests (SAM) comparisons: a) two-month old vitellogenic (Vit2) females were compared with non-vitellogenic (NV) females, showing 825 …

Mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept®), a commonly used immunosuppressive drug in solid organ transplantation, has recently been shown to cause graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)-like changes in the gastrointestinal tract. On rare occasions, true GVHD has also been documented in the gastrointestinal tract of solid organ transplant patients. Because the treatment for these two entities is different, i.e. removal of the offending agent versus the administration of steroids, proper identification of the cause is imperative. We present a case of mycophenolate mofetil colitis mimicking grade I GVHD of the gut. In our study, we used fluorescence in situ hybridization for the Y chromosome to …

To develop transgenic lines for conditional expression of desired genes in rats, we generated several lines of the transgenic rats carrying the tetracycline-controlled transactivator (tTA) gene. Using a vigorous, ubiquitous promoter to drive the tTA transgene, we obtained widespread expression of tTA in various tissues. Expression of tTA was sufficient to strongly activate its reporter gene, but was below the toxicity threshold. We examined the dynamics of Doxycycline (Dox)-regulated gene expression in transgenic rats. In the two transmittable lines, tTA-mediated activation of the reporter gene was fully subject to regulation by Dox. Dox dose-dependently suppressed tTA-activated gene expression. The washout …

Hematologic Effects Of Placental Pathology On Very Low Birthweight Infants Born To Mothers With Preeclampsia., Kelly J. Zook, Md, Amy B. Mackley, Rnc, Jennifer Kern, David A. Paul. Md Jan 2009

Hematologic Effects Of Placental Pathology On Very Low Birthweight Infants Born To Mothers With Preeclampsia., Kelly J. Zook, Md, Amy B. Mackley, Rnc, Jennifer Kern, David A. Paul. Md

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of placental pathology on neonatal neutrophils, platelets, hematocrit and nucleated red blood cells in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants born to mothers with preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of infants with birthweight < 1500 g born to mothers with preeclampsia from july, 2002 to july, 2006 at a single level III neonatal intensive care unit. Placental pathology was reviewed for the presence of placental infarction and vasculopathy. Hematologic parameters from day of life 0, 1 and 2 were obtained. Statistical analysis included repeated-measures analysis of variance and multivariable analysis using logistic regression. RESULT: The study sample included 203 infants with estimated gestational age of 28+/-3 weeks; 45% had placental infarctions and 26% placental vasculopathy. Infants with neutropenia and thrombocytopenia did not have an increased occurrence of placental infarction or maternal vasculopathy but were more likely to be of small gestational age (SGA) and of lower gestational age compared with infants without neutropenia or thrombocytopenia. After multivariable analysis, gestational age and SGA remained associated with both neutropenia and thrombocytopenia whereas placental infarction and vasculopathy did not remain in the models. CONCLUSION: In our population of VLBW infants born to mothers with preeclampsia, placental pathology was common. There was no association of placental infarction or vasculopathy with neonatal neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. The data suggest that neonatal hematologic effects of maternal preeclampsia, if related to the placenta, are associated with factors other than placental histology.

Autistic Disorder Associated With A Paternally Derived Unbalanced Translocation Leading To Duplication Of Chromosome 15pter-Q13.2: A Case Report., David J Wu, Nicholas J Wang, Jennette Driscoll, Naghmeh Dorrani, Dahai Liu, Marian Sigman, N Carolyn Schanen

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Autism spectrum disorders have been associated with maternally derived duplications that involve the imprinted region on the proximal long arm of chromosome 15. Here we describe a boy with a chromosome 15 duplication arising from a 3:1 segregation error of a paternally derived translocation between chromosome 15q13.2 and chromosome 9q34.12, which led to trisomy of chromosome 15pter-q13.2 and 9q34.12-qter. Using array comparative genome hybridization, we localized the breakpoints on both chromosomes and sequence homology suggests that the translocation arose from non-allelic homologous recombination involving the low copy repeats on chromosome 15. The child manifests many characteristics of the maternally-derived duplication …

Prolonged Monitoring After Decelerations On Outpatient Non-Stress Tests: How Long Is Enough?, P. Koduri, Md, M. Giraldo, Md, V. Berghella, Md, S. P. Chauhan, Md Jan 2009

Prolonged Monitoring After Decelerations On Outpatient Non-Stress Tests: How Long Is Enough?, P. Koduri, Md, M. Giraldo, Md, V. Berghella, Md, S. P. Chauhan, Md

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers

Objective: To determine the appropriate duration of prolonged monitoring following decelerations noted on outpatient non-stress test (NST).

Conclusion: Prolonged monitoring beyond 120 min is not associated with increased rate of delivery secondary to NRFS or worse neonatal outcome measured by the 5 minute Apgar score. Monitoring after a deceleration on outpatient NST may be limited to less than 120 minutes. Larger studies are needed to confirm this finding.

A Tale Of Two Towns: The Significance Of A School To A Rural Community, Edward Mills Jan 2009

A Tale Of Two Towns: The Significance Of A School To A Rural Community, Edward Mills

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

This manuscript examines the current health and vitality of two rural communities with similar beginnings but contrasting present day circumstances. The two towns have existed alongside one another, only 5 miles apart, for well over 100 years. The writer explores a variety of circumstances for each community that appear to have been set in place by a series of events over a span of several decades. The decisions and occurances, and respective outcome, may have become 'tipping points' that impacted, or more so, determined a set of identifiable contemporary outcomes.

Intellectual Ability In Children With Anxiety: A Replication And Exploration Of The Differences, Melissa S. Munson

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of anxiety on the intellectual functioning of children. Specifically, the current researchers sought to replicate previous findings that children with higher levels of anxiety have significantly lower scores on tests of intelligence. A second goal was to examine possible reasons for these deficits, including possible deficits in working memory and/or attention. Participants were divided into two groups with high and low anxiety, based on a self-report measure, though none of the children reported clinically problematic anxiety. The participants were 19 children (10 males, 9 females) who were recruited from the …
