That They May Be One: Spiritual Formation And Its Locus In Community, Phillip G. Carnes
That They May Be One: Spiritual Formation And Its Locus In Community, Phillip G. Carnes
Doctor of Ministry
American Christians, as a whole, lack a spiritual maturity that infuses the whole of their lives with Christlikeness. Additionally, Americans suffer from an epidemic of loneliness. These two problems are related. We will demonstrate that American Christians lack spiritual maturity, in part, because they have privatized their faith and made spiritual formation an individual endeavor. Furthermore, we will show that spiritual formation is best located and grounded within a community context. Humans are social creatures. It is becoming ever more widely recognized that social isolation and loneliness are root causes of much psychosocial dysfunction. Humans do not function well if …

Perceptions Of Education, Engineering, And Nursing Faculty Members Regarding Their Role In Helping Students Develop Professional Behavior, Sandra Nadelson, Louis Nadelson, Richard Osguthorpe
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
In conducting this study, we used qualitative and quantitative research techniques to determine faculty members’ perceptions of (a) their role in teaching professional behavior, (b) the professional behaviors that are most important for students to develop, and (c) the methods used to help education, engineering, and nursing students develop professional behavior. Differences were identified between the three groups of faculty members. Overall, results indicated the majority of educators believed they had a role in teaching students professional behavior. However, most faculty members did not acknowledge specific coursework or methods employed to help students develop professional behavior, suggesting instead they tried …

Behavior Of Buff-Breasted Sandpipers (Tryngites Subruficollis) During Migratory Stopover In Agricultural Fields, John P. Mccarty, Joel G. Jorgensen, Lareesa Wolfenbarger
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Background: Understanding the behavior of birds in agricultural habitats can be the first step in evaluating the conservation implications of birds’ use of landscapes shaped by modern agriculture. The existence and magnitude of risk from agricultural practices and the quality of resources agricultural lands provide will be determined largely by how birds use these habitats. Buff-breasted Sandpipers (Tryngites subruficollis) are a species of conservation concern. During spring migration large numbers of Buff-breasted Sandpipers stopover in row crop fields in the Rainwater Basin region of Nebraska. We used behavioral observations as a first step in evaluating how Buff-breasted Sandpipers …

Data Note: Job Seekers With Disabilities At One-Stop Career Centers: An Examination Of Registration For Wagner-Peyser Funded Employment Services From 2002 To 2007, David Hoff, Frank A. Smith
Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
The Wagner-Peyser Act of 1933 established a nationwide system of public employment services, known as the Employment Service. Wagner-Peyser funds are a primary source of funding for the services of One-Stop Career Centers that provide employment services available to all people, including people with disabilities. This data note examines trends on a national and state-by-state basis in the number and percentage of job seekers who self-identified as having disabilities who register for Wagner-Peyser Employment Services.
Between A Rock And A Soft Place: Ecological And Feminist Economics In Policy Debates, Julie A. Nelson
Between A Rock And A Soft Place: Ecological And Feminist Economics In Policy Debates, Julie A. Nelson
Economics Faculty Publication Series
The field of ecological economics includes both economic analysis on the one hand, and discussions of normative values and visions for society, on the other. Using feminist insights into cultural beliefs about the relative “hardness” and “softness” of these two sides, this essay discusses how ecological economists can use this unique “between” space in order to better inform policy. The current crisis of global climate change, it is argued, requires that economists move beyond modeling and measurement, while ecological thinkers need to re-examine beliefs about markets and profit.

Comparison Of Cumulative Planimetry Versus Manual Dissection To Assess Experimental Infarct Size In Isolated Hearts, Matthias L. Riess, Samhita S. Rhodes, David F. Stowe, Mohammed Aldakkak, Amadou K.S. Camara
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction
Infarct size (IS) is an important variable to estimate cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury in animal models. Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) stains viable cells red while leaving infarcted cells unstained. To quantify IS, infarcted and non-infarcted tissue is often manually dissected and weighed (IS-DW). An alternative is to measure infarcted areas by cumulative planimetry (IS-CP).
Methods
We prospectively compared these two methods in 141 Langendorff-prepared guinea pig hearts (1.44 ± 0.02 g) that were part of different studies on mechanisms of cardioprotection. Hearts were perfused with Krebs–Ringer's and subjected to 30 min global ischemia after various cardioprotective treatments. Two hours after reperfusion …

Bayesian Analysis Of Evidence From Studies Of Warfarin V Aspirin For Symptomatic Intracranial Stenosis, Vicki Hertzberg, Barney Stern, Karen Johnston
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Bayesian analyses of symptomatic intracranial stenosis studies were conducted to compare the benefits of long-term therapy with warfarin to aspirin. The synthesis of evidence of effect from previous nonrandomized studies in monitoring a randomized clinical trial was of particular interest. Sequential Bayesian learning analysis was conducted and Bayesian hierarchical random effects models were used to incorporate variability between studies. The posterior point estimates for the risk rate ratio (RRR) were similar between analyses, although the interval estimates resulting from the hierarchical analyses are larger than the corresponding Bayesian learning analyses. This demonstrated the difference between these methods in accounting for …

We set forth an argument for the integration of social science research with natural science and engineering research in major research infrastructure investments addressing water science. A program of integrated observation of water resources offers great opportunities to address several environmental “grand challenges” identified by the National Research Council, including climate variability, institutions and resource use, and land use dynamics, and their importance for hydrologic forecasting. We argue that such a program has the potential to advance both water science and the contributing disciplines. However, to realize this potential, it is essential to recognize that social science requires critical infrastructure …
The Effective Target Of The Social Security Disability Benefits Reform Act Of 1984, Perry Douglas Singleton
The Effective Target Of The Social Security Disability Benefits Reform Act Of 1984, Perry Douglas Singleton
Center for Policy Research
A substantial portion of the rise in Social Security Disability Insurance rolls since 1984 has been attributed to the Social Security Disability Benefits Reform Act. Using data from the National Health Insurance Survey, I examine whom the act effectively targeted. The analysis shows that new enrollees were demonstrably taller than previous enrollees, suggesting that the act expanded eligibility to individuals in better health and socioeconomic circumstances. However, the estimated effect of increased SSDI eligibility on employment is low, suggesting that the act targeted males who would have otherwise been unemployed.

Genome 10k: A Proposal To Obtain Whole-Genome Sequence For 10 000 Vertebrate Species, Tony Gamble, Genome 10k Community Of Scientists
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The human genome project has been recently complemented by whole-genome assessment sequence of 32 mammals and 24 nonmammalian vertebrate species suitable for comparative genomic analyses. Here we anticipate a precipitous drop in costs and increase in sequencing efficiency, with concomitant development of improved annotation technology and, therefore, propose to create a collection of tissue and DNA specimens for 10 000 vertebrate species specifically designated for whole-genome sequencing in the very near future. For this purpose, we, the Genome 10K Community of Scientists (G10KCOS), will assemble and allocate a biospecimen collection of some 16 203 representative vertebrate species spanning …

Chemalign: Biologically Relevant Multiple Sequence Alignment Using Physicochemical Properties, Hyrum Carroll, Mark J. Clement, Quinn O. Snell, David Mcclellan
Faculty Publications
We present a new algorithm, ChemAlign, that uses physicochemical properties and secondary structure elements to create biologically relevant multiple sequence alignments (MSAs). Additionally, we introduce the Physicochemical Property Difference (PPD) score for the evaluation of MSAs. This score is the normalized difference of physicochemical property values between a calculated and a reference alignment. It takes a step beyond sequence similarity and measures characteristics of the amino acids to provide a more biologically relevant metric. ChemAlign is able to produce more biologically correct alignments and can help to identify potential drug docking sites.

entific community. While a heterogeneous group, children with sexual behavior problems consistently demonstrate a number of problems related to adjustment and overall development. In order to appropriately intervene with these children, a comprehensive understanding of etiology is imperative. The overarching goal of the present paper is to review the extant research on mechanisms associated with the development of problematic sexual behavior in childhood within a developmental psychopathology framework. What is known about normative and nonnormative sexual behavior in childhood is reviewed, highlighting definitional challenges and age-related developmental differences. Further, the relationship between child sexual abuse and child sexual behavior problems …

Consumer Interest In Corporate Law, David Yosifon
Consumer Interest In Corporate Law, David Yosifon
Faculty Publications
This Article provides a comprehensive assessment of the consumer interest in dominant theories of the corporation and in the fundamental doctrines of corporate law. In so doing, the Article fills a void in contemporary corporate law scholarship, which has failed to give sustained attention to consumers in favor of exploring the interests of other corporate stakeholders, especially shareholders, creditors, and workers. Utilizing insights derived from the law and behavioralism movement, this Article examines, in particular, the limitations of the shareholder primacy norm at the heart of prevailing "nexus of contracts" and "team production" theories of the firm. The Article concludes …

Activity-Aware Ecg-Based Patient Authentication For Remote Health Monitoring, Janani Sriram, Minho Shin, Tanzeem Choudhury, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
Mobile medical sensors promise to provide an efficient, accurate, and economic way to monitor patients' health outside the hospital. Patient authentication is a necessary security requirement in remote health monitoring scenarios. The monitoring system needs to make sure that the data is coming from the right person before any medical or financial decisions are made based on the data. Credential-based authentication methods (e.g., passwords, certificates) are not well-suited for remote healthcare as patients could hand over credentials to someone else. Furthermore, one-time authentication using credentials or trait-based biometrics (e.g., face, fingerprints, iris) do not cover the entire monitoring period and …

Does Theory Of Mind Mediate Aggression And Bullying In Middle School Males And Females?, Jami E. Givens
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between theory of mind, gender, physical aggression, relational aggression, and bullying. Specifically, this research study was guided by the question: Does theory of mind mediate the relations between gender and physical aggression, gender and relational aggression, and gender and bullying? Three main hypotheses were made following Baron and Kenny’s (1986) mediation model steps. The first hypothesis sought to identify whether gender differences existed in aggressive and bullying behaviors. Specifically, it was hypothesized that (a) adolescent females will endorse higher levels of relational aggression compared to adolescent males, (b) adolescent males …
Inequalities In Illinois Constitutional Equality, Jeffrey A. Parness, Laura Lee
Inequalities In Illinois Constitutional Equality, Jeffrey A. Parness, Laura Lee
Northern Illinois University Law Review
In 1970 four new equality provisions were added to the Illinois Constitution, including two explicit equal protection provisions and two explicit antidiscrimination provisions. Shortly thereafter, Elmer Gertz, the Chair of the Bill of Rights Committee for the relevant constitutional convention, declared that we in Illinois have gone beyond all other states and the federal government in eliminating discrimination. Unfortunately, a few years later Gertz lamented that while Illinois had the strongest nondiscrimination provisions of any state constitution, these provisions had only yielded unrealized expectations. Today, the 1970 equality mandates continue to be unrealized. This paper reviews the four provisions and …
