Nebraska Swine Reports
Effects of allowing gilts ad libitum access to feed until breeding age or developing them with 25% energy restriction from 123 days of age to breeding on reproductive success through parity I were studied with a total of 639 gilts of two lines that differ in lean growth and reproduction. Gilts of the two lines had common sires, an industry maternal line, but dams were from different populations. One line of gilts, LW x LR, represented standard industry Large White x Landrace cross females. The other gilts, L45X, were daughters of Nebraska selection Line 45 that has been selected 27generations …

Effect Of Dam Parity On Growth Performance And Immunity Of Weaned Pigs, Erin E. Carney, Huyen Tran, Justin W. Bundy, Roman Moreno, Philip S. Miller, Thomas E. Burkey
Nebraska Swine Reports
The growth performance of weaned pigs derived from different parities has not been previously evaluated; however, unpublished and anecdotal observations suggest that progeny derived from first parity (P1) dams have reduced health status and growth performance compared to progeny derived from mature sows (≥ P2). The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of dam parity on growth performance and immune response of P1 and P4 progeny during the nursery phase of production. Results from this experiment suggest that P4 progeny have increased body weight and growth performance during the nursery phase of production compared to P1 …

In Vivo And In Vitro Expression Of Porcine Zinc Transporter (Znt) 1 Mrna, Huyen Tran, Phillip Miller, Thomas E. Burkey
Nebraska Swine Reports
Preliminary experiments were carried out to evaluate in vivo expression of zinc transporter (ZnT) 1 mRNA in a panel of tissues obtained from weaned pigs and to evaluate in vitro changes in ZnT1 mRNA in a porcine jejunal epithelial cell line (IPEC-J2) treated with low (40 μM) or high (80 μM) concentrations of zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) or, in a separate experiment, with low (50 μg/ml) or high (100 μg/mL) concentrations of antibiotics (as gentamicin; GENT). Lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 10 ng/mL) was included as a negative control in both experiments. Zinc transporter 1 mRNA was detected in all tissues evaluated …

Oxygenase Coordination Is Required For Morphological Transition And The Host–Fungus Interaction Of Aspergillus Flavus, Sigal Horowitz Brown, James B. Scott, Jeyanthi Bhaheetharan, William C. Sharpee, Lane Milde, Richard A. Wilson
Fungal Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions
Oxylipins, a class of oxygenase-derived unsaturated fatty acids, are important signal molecules in many biological systems. Recent characterization of an Aspergillus flavus lipoxygenase gene, lox, revealed its importance in maintaining a density-dependent morphology switch from sclerotia to conidia as population density increased. Here, we present evidence for the involvement of four more oxylipingenerating dioxygenases (PpoA, PpoB, PpoC, and PpoD) in A. flavus density-dependent phenomena and the effects of loss of these genes on aflatoxin production and seed colonization. Although several single mutants showed alterations in the sclerotia-to-conidia switch, the major effect was observed in a strain downregulated for all …

Fungal Physiology: A Future Perspective, Richard A. Wilson, Nicholas J. Talbot
Fungal Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions
The study of fungal physiology is set to change dramatically in the next few years as highly scalable technologies are deployed allowing accurate measurement and identification of metabolites, proteins and transcripts within cells. The advent of next-generation DNA-sequencing technologies will also provide genome sequence information from large numbers of industrially relevant and pathogenic fungal species, and allow comparative genome analysis between strains and populations of fungi. When coupled with advances in gene functional analysis, protein-protein interaction studies, live cell imaging and mathematical modelling, this promises a step-change in our understanding of how fungal cells operate as integrated dynamic living systems

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Global climate change is projected to produce warmer, longer, and more frequent droughts, referred to here as “global change-type droughts”, which have the potential to trigger widespread tree die-off. However, drought-induced tree mortality cannot be predicted with confidence, because long-term field observations of plant water stress prior to, and culminating in, mortality are rare, precluding the development and testing of mechanisms. Here, we document plant water stress in two widely distributed, co-occurring species, piñon pine (Pinus edulis) and juniper (Juniperus monosperma), over more than a decade, leading up to regional-scale die-off of piñon pine trees in …

The Impact Of Temperature On The Performance Of Anaerobic Biological Treatment Of Perchlorate In Drinking Water, Nicholas R. Dugan, Daniel J. Williams, Maria Meyer, Ross R. Schneider, Thomas F. Speth, Deborah H. Metz
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
A 20-month pilot-scale study was conducted to examine the impact of temperature on the performance of an anaerobic biological contactor used to treat perchlorate-contaminated water. The contactor was successfully acclimated with indigenous microorganisms. Influent temperatures varied from 1.4 to 30 °C. The objectives of the study were to investigate the effects of temperature on perchlorate removal, nitrate removal, nitrite formation, dissolved oxygen consumption, sulfide production, and nutrient acetate consumption. The results confirmed that consistent biological perchlorate removal to 2 µg/L is feasible at temperatures above 10 °C. Effluent concentrations of perchlorate, nitrate, and dissolved oxygen varied inversely with temperature, while …

Evidence-Based Integrated Environmental Solutions For Secondary Lead Smelters: Pollution Prevention And Waste Minimization Technologies And Practices, A. M. Genaidy, R. Sequeira, T. Tolaymat, J. Kohler, M. Rinder
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
An evidence-based methodology was adopted in this research to establish strategies to increase lead recovery and recycling via a systematic review and critical appraisal of the published literature. In particular, the research examines pollution prevention and waste minimization practices and technologies that meet the following criteria: (a) reduce/recover/recycle the largest quantities of lead currently being disposed of as waste, (b) technically and economically viable, that is, ready to be diffused and easily transferable, and (c) strong industry interest (i.e., industry would consider implementing projects with higher payback periods). The following specific aims are designed to achieve the study objectives: Aim …

Using Material Flow Analysis For Sustainable Materials Management: Part Of The Equation For Priority Setting, Frederick W. Allen, Priscilla A. Halloran, Angela H. Leith, M. Clare Lindsay
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Many possible applications exist for material flow analysis (MFA). One of them is to help with sustainable materials management (SMM), a familiar concept to the readers of this journal— “an approach to serving human needs by using/ reusing resources most productively and sustainably throughout their life cycles, generally minimizing the amount of materials involved and all the associated environmental impacts” (EPA 2009).
Governments and industries around the world are stepping up their efforts to manage materials sustainably. But where should governments start? How should they set priorities on what materials to address? A few hundred basic materials are transformed into …

Interactions Between Biological And Abiotic Pathways In The Reduction Of Chlorinated Solvents, Richard A. Brown, James G. Mueller, Alan G. Seech, James K. Henderson, John T. Wilson
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
While biologically mediated reductive dechlorination continues to be a significant focus of chlorinated solvent remediation, there has been an increased interest in abiotic reductive processes for the remediation of chlorinated solvents. In situ chemical reduction (ISCR) uses zero-valent iron (ZVI)–based technologies, such as nanoscale iron and bimetallic ZVI, as well as naturally occurring reduced minerals incorporating dual-valent iron (DVI), such as magnetite, green rust, and iron sulfides that are capable of dechlorinating solvents. A more recent area of development in ISCR has been in combining biological and abiotic processes.
There are several ways in which biological and abiotic processes can …

International Law In Crisis: A Qualitative Empirical Contribution To The Compliance Debate, Michael P. Scharf
Faculty Publications
In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 21, Professors Jack Goldsmith and Eric Posner published The Limits of International Law, a potentially revolutionary book that employs rational choice theory to argue that international law is really just “politics” and does not render a “compliance pull” on State decisionmakers. Critics have pointed out that Goldsmith and Posner’s identification of the role of international law in each of their case studies is largely conjectural, and that what is needed is qualitative empirical data that identifies the international law-based arguments that were actually made and the policy-makers’ responses to such …

Education In Cross-Cultural Settings: Psychological Underpinnings Of Achievement In Papua New Guinea, Genevieve F. Nelson, Jasmine Green, Dennis M. Mcinerney, Martin Dowson, Andrew C. Schauble
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Education and achievement in Papua New Guinea has received minimal attention in the psychological and educational literature. Although student motivation and achievement have been investigated in a large variety of cultures throughout the world, this has not been substantially extended to the developing world. The current study investigated a selection of psychological processes that contribute to student achievement in the context of a majority, indigenous and developing culture. Motivational goal orientations, learning and self-regulatory processes of 359 students from Papua New Guinea (PNG) were investigated. Structural equation modeling investigated the relations between the psychological variables. Results are discussed in the …
