Erythrocyte Tao And Tbars Levels In Patients Who Suffered Missed Miscarriage, Ayşe Nur Aksoy, Hülya Aksoy, Nuri̇nni̇sa Öztürk, Çağlar Bulut

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Missed miscarriage is a pregnancy-related condition, and lipid peroxidation and alterations in antioxidant levels may be of importance in the pathogenesis of this disorder. The aim of the study was to assess whether erythrocyte total antioxidant activity (TAO) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels altered in patients who suffered missed miscarriage. Materials and methods: We measured levels of TAO and TBARS, as a lipid peroxidation marker, in erythrocytes of women with a diagnosed missed miscarriage (n = 36) during 7-16 weeks of pregnancy. The control group consisted of women (n = 34) with uncomplicated pregnancy similarly matched for …

Reed – Periphyton – Mycota Interactions In The Water Of Different Water Bodies, Bazyli Czeczuga, Bozenna Mazalska, Anna Godlewska, Elzbieta Muszynska

Turkish Journal of Botany

The authors investigated the influence of periphyton that abundantly overgrow stalks of reeds (reed-periphyton) submerged in water [Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Stewdel], especially the old ones, on the occurrence of mycoflora species in different trophic seasons in the water of 4 trophically different water bodies. The seeds and snake exuviae were used as bait. In the spring, diatoms were the predominant group of algae forming the periphyton on old reed stalks, green algae predominated in the summer, and cyanobacteria in the autumn. During the seasons studied, in the water from Lake Blizno equal numbers of mycoflora species were noted …

Strengthening China's Regulatory Regime: How The United States Can Engage, Herbert Claiborne Pell

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

This article considers how the United States can constructively contribute to the development of a more effective regulatory regime in the People's Republic of China (PRC). It opens with a review of the history and issues associated with China's regulatory regime. It then surveys ongoing challenges and responses to these challenges. Finally, it considers the national interests of the United States and China in regulatory reform and proposes modest strategic initiatives for the United States to pursue in light of these analyses of need and common interest. The article's argument crosses the disciplinary boundaries of law, political science, sociology, economics, …

Foreword: Poverty Law Issue, Ann Juergens Jan 2009

Foreword: Poverty Law Issue, Ann Juergens

Faculty Scholarship

This Poverty Law Issue provides testimony as to why and how the legal profession, the government, and society can better provide justice for people of small means. Overall, this Poverty Law Issue contributes to understanding how we may ensure that the difficulty of poverty borne by our fellow citizens does not become compounded by injustice. For when justice is compromised for one group, its integrity as a whole may rightly be questioned.

A Crooked Picture: Re-Framing The Problem Of Child Sexual Abuse, Eric S. Janus Jan 2009

A Crooked Picture: Re-Framing The Problem Of Child Sexual Abuse, Eric S. Janus

Faculty Scholarship

This article discusses the problem of ending child sexual abuse using an allegory explaining that certain types of punitive solutions as solving the river "downstream", or in problem-solving mode, as opposed to "upstream", or in prospective problem avoidance. The thesis of this brief article is that our public policy is focused too far downstream. We rightly condemn child sexual abuse, but our public discourse frames the issue in a way that misdirects our public policy towards downstream solutions. If we truly want to protect our children from sexual abuse and end the cycle of violence, we need to reframe the …

Caspase-Cleaved Tar Dna-Binding Protein-43 In Pick’S Disease, Troy T. Rohn, Polina Kokoulina Jan 2009

Caspase-Cleaved Tar Dna-Binding Protein-43 In Pick’S Disease, Troy T. Rohn, Polina Kokoulina

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The hyperphosphorylation and proteolytic modification of the TAR DNA binding protein-43 (TDP-43) is a key finding in a number of neurodegenerative diseases including frontotemporal dementia with ubiquitin-positive inclusions (FTLD-U), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and most recently Alzheimer’s disease (AD). To examine whether proteolytic modifications of TDP-43 is a relevant finding in Pick’s disease, we utilized a novel site-directed caspase-cleavage antibody based upon a known caspase-3 cleavage consensus site within TDP-43 at position 219. Application of this antibody, termed TDP caspase-cleavage product (TDPccp) to postmortem Pick’s disease brain sections revealed the presence of caspase-cleaved TDP-43 in Pick and Hirano bodies predominantly …

Male Rape And Human Rights, Lara Stemple Jan 2009

Male Rape And Human Rights, Lara Stemple

UC Law Journal

For the last few decades, the prevailing approach to sexual violence in international human rights instruments has focused virtually exclusively on the abuse of women and girls. In the meantime, sexual violence against males continues to flourish in prisons, men have been abused and sexually humiliated during situations of armed conflict, the sexual abuse of boys remains alarmingly common, and gay male victims of sexual assault are assumed to have "asked for it." This Article discusses the frequency of male rape and the various contexts in which in occurs. It notes, however, that numerous instruments in the human rights canon …

Sovereign Immunity And Patent Infringement, Ten Years After Florida Prepaid: The State Of The Law And How It Can Be Fixed, Matthew Paik Jan 2009

Sovereign Immunity And Patent Infringement, Ten Years After Florida Prepaid: The State Of The Law And How It Can Be Fixed, Matthew Paik

UC Law Journal

Ten years ago, the United States Supreme Court decided Florida Prepaid Secondary Education Expense Board v. College Savings Bank, a case with far-reaching implications in both patent law and sovereign immunity. With its decision, the Supreme Court reestablished the immunity that states enjoyed against patent infringement suits. The effect was that while states could obtain patents and enforce them against any infringers, private party patent holders could not do the same when states infringe on their patents. Now, more than ever, states are reaping the benefits of the patent system without having to play by the same set of rules …

Toward A Revised 4.2 No-Contact Rule, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr., Dana Remus Irwin Jan 2009

Toward A Revised 4.2 No-Contact Rule, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr., Dana Remus Irwin

UC Law Journal

Model Rule of Professional Conduct 4.2, in effect in substantially similar form in all U.S. jurisdictions, generally forbids a lawyer from contacting a person represented by another lawyer unless that lawyer consents or the contact is "authorized by law." Our thesis is that as conceptualized and applied, this Rule is overbroad and ambiguous in important respects. After illustrating and explaining these shortcomings, we propose reform to Rule 4.2 to better implement its intended purpose. Specifically, we propose modifications to the text of the Rule that: (i) clarify the meaning of the "authorized by law" exception, (2) articulate new exceptions to …

Sorry, No Remedy: Intersectionality And The Grand Irony Of Erisa, Paul M. Secunda Jan 2009

Sorry, No Remedy: Intersectionality And The Grand Irony Of Erisa, Paul M. Secunda

UC Law Journal

Congress enacted the Employee Retiree Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) to protect employees' retirement and welfare benefits. Nevertheless, the Act has been interpreted by the U.S Supreme Court over the years to be in essence an Employers' Security Act, with employers using ERISA to shield themselves against employee benefits-related claims. The flaw in the current ERISA scheme lies at the intersection of ERISA's preemption and remedial provisions. Courts broadly interpret the preemption provisions of ERISA to invalidate employee benefits-related state laws and then force employees to depend on an inadequate, "comprehensive and reticulated" remedial scheme. This "intersectionality" problem leads …

Per Se Treatment: An Unnecessary Relic Of Antitrust Litigation, Adam Weg Jan 2009

Per Se Treatment: An Unnecessary Relic Of Antitrust Litigation, Adam Weg

UC Law Journal

This Note examines the erosion, as demonstrated by the Supreme Court's recent opinion in Leegin, of remaining per se illegal categories of antitrust law in favor of a more detailed analysis of each agreement. This trend has allowed procompetitive justifications for each agreement to be heard, even those traditionally held to be per se illegal.

Numerous petitions before the Court urge it to scale back or even eliminate the remaining per se illegal categories under § I of the Sherman Act. Such a trend has become appropriate because the remaining per se agreements can actually have some procompetitive justifications in …

Literacy Initiatives In The Urban Setting That Promote Higher Level Thinking, Karen C. Waters Jan 2009

Literacy Initiatives In The Urban Setting That Promote Higher Level Thinking, Karen C. Waters

Education Faculty Publications

How does an urban district become a twice-nominated candidate by the Broad Foundation? In a district in which 72 languages are spoken, 38% of the students live in homes in which English is not the dominant language, and 91% of the population is minority (African American, Asian, and Hispanic), this largest school district in Connecticut not only made student learning a priority, but focused on higher level thinking as part of the process. This chapter provides insight to grassroots implementation of district and department initiatives over the course of five years that emphasized cognitive and metacognitive strategies in advancing the …

7tmrmine: A Web Server For Hierarchical Mining Of 7tmr Proteins, Guoqing Lu, Zhifang Wang, Alan M. Jones, Etsuko N. Moriyama

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Background: Seven-transmembrane region-containing receptors (7TMRs) play central roles in eukaryotic signal transduction. Due to their biomedical importance, thorough mining of 7TMRs from diverse genomes has been an active target of bioinformatics and pharmacogenomics research. The need for new and accurate 7TMR/GPCR prediction tools is paramount with the accelerated rate of acquisition of diverse sequence information. Currently available and often used protein classification methods (e.g., profile hidden Markov Models) are highly accurate for identifying their membership information among already known 7TMR subfamilies. However, these alignment-based methods are less effective for identifying remote similarities, e.g., identifying proteins from highly divergent or possibly …

Beyond Student Ratings: “A Whole New World, A New Fantastic Point Of View”, Ronald A. Berk Jan 2009

Beyond Student Ratings: “A Whole New World, A New Fantastic Point Of View”, Ronald A. Berk

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Unfortunately, student ratings have dominated as the primary and, frequently, only measure of teaching performance at colleges and universities for the past four decades (Seldin, 2006). In fact, the evaluation of teaching has been in a metaphorical cul-de-sac with student ratings as the universal barometer. Only recently has there been a trend toward augmenting those ratings with other data sources to broaden and deepen the evidence base (Arreola, 2007; Berk, 2006b; Braskamp and Ory, 1994; Centra, 1993; Knapper and Cranton, 2001; Seldin, 2006).

Although much has been learned over the 60-year history of faculty evaluation and the 50-year his- tory …

Attenuation Of Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiac Injury By Mitochondrial Glutaredoxin 2, Nicole M. Diotte, Ye Xiong, Jinping Gao, Balvin H.L. Chua, Ye-Shih Ho

United States Public Health Resources

While the cardiotoxicity of doxorubicin (DOX) is known to be partly mediated through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the biochemical mechanisms by which ROS damage cardiomyocytes remain to be determined. This study investigates whether S-glutathionylation of mitochondrial proteins plays a role in DOX-induced myocardial injury using a line of transgenic mice expressing the human mitochondrial glutaredoxin 2 (Glrx2), a thiotransferase catalyzing the reduction as well as formation of protein–glutathione mixed disulfides, in cardiomyocytes. The total glutaredoxin (Glrx) activity was increased by 76% and 53 fold in homogenates of whole heart and isolated heart mitochondria of Glrx2 transgenic mice, …

Strategic Discussions for Nebraska

Nebraskans like where they live. Young and old, they like the

“sense of place” they feel here. They like being part of the legendary

work ethic. They like the fact that, for the most part, they

feel safe here. They like the fact that Nebraska agriculture helps

to feed and power the world.

But when people from other states ask them where they’re

from, they sound apologetic. The Strategic Discussions for

Nebraska team heard variations on that theme everywhere we

went. Caleb Pollard, Executive Director of the Ord Chamber of

Commerce said it best: “we need for Nebraskans to be …

Animal Helminths In Human Archaeological Remains: A Review Of Zoonoses In The Past, Luciana Sianto, Marcia Chame, Cassius S. P. Silva, Marcelo L. C. Gonçalves, Karl Reinhard, Martín Horacio Fugassa, Adauto Araújo Jan 2009

Animal Helminths In Human Archaeological Remains: A Review Of Zoonoses In The Past, Luciana Sianto, Marcia Chame, Cassius S. P. Silva, Marcelo L. C. Gonçalves, Karl Reinhard, Martín Horacio Fugassa, Adauto Araújo

Karl Reinhard Publications

The authors present a review of records of intestinal parasitic helminths from animals in human archaeological remains, reported since the emergence of paleopathological studies. The objective was to relate paleoparasitological findings to geographic, biotic, and abiotic factors from the environment in which the prehistoric populations lived, and understand some aspects related to the process of human dispersion and biological and cultural evolution. Modification of eating habits and the incorporation of new cultural practices are analyzed from the perspective of zoonoses from prehistory to the present day, especially in Brazilian indigenous populations. Three tables identifying the helminths, their natural hosts, dates, …

Demography And Genetic Structure Of A Recovering Grizzly Bear Population, Katherine C. Kendall, Jeffrey B. Stetz, John Boulanger, Amy Macleod, David Paetkau, Gary White

United States National Park Service: Publications

Grizzly bears (brown bears; Ursus arctos) are imperiled in the southern extent of their range worldwide. The threatened population in northwestern Montana, USA, has been managed for recovery since 1975; yet, no rigorous data were available to monitor program success. We used data from a large noninvasive genetic sampling effort conducted in 2004 and 33 years of physical captures to assess abundance, distribution, and genetic health of this population. We combined data from our 3 sampling methods (hair trap, bear rub, and physical capture) to construct individual bear encounter histories for use in Huggins–Pledger closed mark–recapture models. Our population …
