Improving The Plight Of Fallen Dancers: Lessons Learned From The Netherlands, Mary Elizabeth Air Nov 2009

Improving The Plight Of Fallen Dancers: Lessons Learned From The Netherlands, Mary Elizabeth Air

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Despite facing exceptionally high physical and psychological stressors, dancers in most parts of the world represent a marginalized and often neglected patient population. This study examined the physical, psychological, and health care access challenges of injured dancers in the Netherlands, a country which has remained grossly underrepresented in the performing arts medicine research literature, despite having a unique tetrad of universal health care access, a robust performing arts industry, leading clinical care in performing arts medicine, and tight-knit systems of networks and referrals between dance and medical institutions. The purpose was to determine the degree of psychological distress among injured …

Copy Number Variant Analysis Of Patients With Malformations Of Cortical Development, Luis Kolb Nov 2009

Copy Number Variant Analysis Of Patients With Malformations Of Cortical Development, Luis Kolb

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Copy Number Variants (CNVs) are DNA fragment that are approximately 1 kilobase (kb) to several megabases for which copy-number differences have been revealed by comparison of two or more genomes. The Human Genome project has led to the identification of close to 1500 of these variable regions covering 12% of the human genome. Even though many of these variants are considered to be benign, some of these genomic rearrangement have been found to be disease causing, including several nervous system disorders such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth, Williams-Beuren Syndrome, and Prader-Willi syndrome. In this study we have performed copy number variant analysis on …

Correlation Between An Email Based Board Review Program And American Board Of Pediatrics General Pediatrics Certifying Examination Scores, Erik E. Langenau, Joshua Fogel, Henry A. Schaeffer

Publications and Research

Objective To investigate the impact of a weekly email based board review course on individual resident performance on the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) General Pediatrics Certifying Examination for pediatric residents and, specifically, residents with low ABP In-training Examination (ITE) scores. Methods Weekly board-type questions were emailed to all pediatric residents from 2004–2007. Responses to board-type questions were tracked, recorded, and correlated with ITE scores and ABP General Pediatrics Certifying Examination Scores. Results With regard to total number of questions answered, only total number of questions answered correctly had a significant positive correlation with standard board scores (n = 71, …

3d-Surfer: Software For High-Throughput Protein Surface Comparison And Analysis, David La, Juan Esquivel-Rodríguez, Vishwesh Venkatraman, Bin Li, Lee Sael, Stephen Ueng, Steven Ahrendt, Daisuke Kihara

Faculty Publications

Summary: We present 3D-SURFER, a web-based tool designed to facilitate high-throughput comparison and characterization of proteins based on their surface shape. As each protein is effectively represented by a vector of 3D Zernike descriptors, comparison times for a query protein against the entire PDB take, on an average, only a couple of seconds. The web interface has been designed to be as interactive as possible with displays showing animated protein rotations, CATH codes and structural alignments using the CE program. In addition, geometrically interesting local features of the protein surface, such as pockets that often correspond to ligand binding sites …

The Human Rights Crisis In Iran: The Islamic Republic Continues To Crack Down On Dissent With Impunity, Renee C. Redman

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

On June 12, 2009, shortly after the polls closed, the Iranian government announced that the incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, had won the presidential election by a landslide. His main challengers, Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, immediately disputed this conclusion on the grounds of fraud and called for new elections. Massive street demonstrations broke out protesting the reported result and in support of the opposition.

Understanding The Iranian Green Movement: Regime Change From Within, Amir Fakhravar

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

When we talk about human rights in Iran, the first thing that comes to mind is the torture of political prisoners. Amir Fakhravar is one of the eye witnesses to torture in the Islamic Republic prisons. He spent over five years of my life in prison, under torture, and over 15 years in the corridors of the Revolutionary courts.
