Secondary Structures And Thermodynamic Properties Of Ampa Receptor Aptamers, Sabarinath Jayaseelan Jan 2009

Secondary Structures And Thermodynamic Properties Of Ampa Receptor Aptamers, Sabarinath Jayaseelan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Using systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX), our lab previously selected a class of competitive RNA aptamers against the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA) receptors. One aptamer in this class was found to have a minimal, functional sequence of 58 nucleotides. In vitro transcription generates two RNA transcripts with the same sequence, which we named M1 and M2, both of which are required to work together to inhibit the AMPA receptors. Although the M1 and M2 species have the same sequence, they cannot be interconverted through unfolding by denaturation/refolding by renaturation. To probe the secondary structures and the thermodynamic …

The Influence Of Perceived Origins Of Learning Difficulties And Professional Role On The Acceptability Of The Iq-Achievement Discrepancy And Response-To-Intervention (Rti) Approaches To Learning Disability Classification, Matthew Amore Raso Jan 2009

The Influence Of Perceived Origins Of Learning Difficulties And Professional Role On The Acceptability Of The Iq-Achievement Discrepancy And Response-To-Intervention (Rti) Approaches To Learning Disability Classification, Matthew Amore Raso

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The present study assessed the acceptability of both the IQ-achievement discrepancy approach and the Response-to-Intervention (RTI) approach to LD classification among teachers, school psychologists, and school administrators. Relationships between each of these variables and perceived origins of learning difficulties among these professionals were also assessed. RTI received more favorable acceptability ratings when compared with the IQ-achievement approach, and more weight was attributed to instructional influences than either biological or environmental influences across all three groups, although significant between-group differences were noted. Biologically and instructionally-based explanations of learning difficulties were significant predictors of IQ-achievement acceptability, but in opposite directions. In contrast, …

Glossolalia Influences On Stress Response Among Apostolic Pentecostals, Christopher Dana Lynn Jan 2009

Glossolalia Influences On Stress Response Among Apostolic Pentecostals, Christopher Dana Lynn

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study tests the hypothesis that long–term experience of Apostolic Pentecostal glossolalia or “speaking in tongues” reduces the reactivity of biological stress response to normal or "daily" stressors. Glossolalia is a form of religious dissociation. Dissociation is a universal capacity often conflated with “trance.” It refers to the partitioning of awareness associated with a variety of cross–cultural forms, from daydreaming and denial to possession trance, shamanic spirit journeys, and dissociative identity disorder. Dissociation is believed to reduce or filter stress by mediating evaluation of potential stressors and reactivity of the mechanisms of biological stress response. Previous studies have examined these …

Metal Concentrations In Native Yupik Foodstuffs From St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Judith Kricheff Jan 2009

Metal Concentrations In Native Yupik Foodstuffs From St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Judith Kricheff

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Yupik people of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska have a traditional subsistence lifestyle with the majority of their diet consisting of local birds, fish, seal, walrus, and whale. Diets based on fish and marine mammals, such as the Yupik diet, are potential pathways for exposure to mercury and other toxic metals. At St. Lawrence Island, metal contaminants may come from local sources such as weathered rock or two abandoned U.S. military bases or remote sources through atmospheric deposition or seasonal migration of animals to the island.
The main goals of this study are to determine the total concentrations of copper …

The Effect Of Vegetated Roofs On Acid Precipitation Runoff, Jennifer Gillen Jan 2009

The Effect Of Vegetated Roofs On Acid Precipitation Runoff, Jennifer Gillen

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Vegetated, or “green” roofs are used in urban architecture and sustainable building to capture stormwater and enhance urban wildlife. Most research to date has focused on their water retention capabilities, but green roofs also have the potential to treat anthropogenic acid precipitation in urban environments. More specifically, green roofs could reduce sulfate, nitrate and hydrogen ion concentrations in runoff. One previous study has demonstrated that nitrate was reduced in water draining from a green roof (Berndtsson, et al. 2006), but this unpublished thesis appears to be the first comprehensive study of the effects of vegetated roof materials on major ions …

Measurement Of Atmospheric Ammonia Species : Development, Validation, And Field Applications Of An Analytical Method, Jian Hou Jan 2009

Measurement Of Atmospheric Ammonia Species : Development, Validation, And Field Applications Of An Analytical Method, Jian Hou

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Ammonia is the primary base in the atmosphere. It reacts readily with atmospheric acids such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid to form ammonium salts that occur predominantly in the fine aerosol particle (PM2.5) fraction. The ability to measure ammonia species (NHx, the sum of gaseous NH3 and particulate NH4+) is essential for the investigation of atmospheric behaviors of NHx. In this dissertation work, a highly sensitive technique has been developed for the measurement of atmospheric NHx species. The method is based on aqueous scrubbing of the atmospheric NH3 and NH4+ using …

Molecular Evolution Of Genes Underlying Phenotypic Differences Between Humans And Chimpanzees, Santhoshi Bandla Jan 2009

Molecular Evolution Of Genes Underlying Phenotypic Differences Between Humans And Chimpanzees, Santhoshi Bandla

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (P. paniscus) are often used as models to study the genetic and morphological changes on the lineage leading to the modern humans (Homo sapiens). Results of this dissertation suggest that, in comparison to other hominoids, chimpanzees and bonobos are more derived in their relative testes sizes and promiscuous mating systems. Phylogenetic analysis of genes that might underlie increased testes size revealed that, in addition to being a sex-determining gene, SRY displays Pan-specific amino acid replacements that make it a compelling candidate as a testes-size determining gene. Strikingly, SRY and another candidate gene, DMRT3, display patterns …

New Hope: A Thoughtful And Effective Approach To "Make Work Pay, Greg J. Duncan, Hans Bos, Lisa L. Gennetian, Heather Hill

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This paper makes the case for a national program offering the kind of work supports that were part of the New Hope program, a policy experiment that operated for three years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our policy, like New Hope, would provide a set of work supports for full-time workers-both parents and nonparents, men and women-that would lift them out of poverty as well as provide essential benefits in the form of health insurance and child-care subsidies for people who needed them. Across all of the people offered the chance to participate in the New Hope program, including single men, work …

Biomonitoring For Exposure To Trace Elements In Utero : Analysis Of The Human Placenta, Pamela Catherine Kruger Jan 2009

Biomonitoring For Exposure To Trace Elements In Utero : Analysis Of The Human Placenta, Pamela Catherine Kruger

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The placenta forms in eutherian mammals, and is responsible for the nutrition of the developing fetus. However, maternal exposure to environmental pollutants both before and during pregnancy may result in the passage of toxins through the placental barrier and into fetal tissues. The placenta is the only organ derived from both maternal and fetal tissues, and establishes a link between the fetus and the environmental exposures of the mother. The analysis of placentae for the presence of environmental pollutants offers the possibility of exposure measurements in both the mother and the developing fetus. Specifically, trace element determination in human placentae …

Interview participants were selected via snowball sampling. Employing a qualitative approach, I conducted face-to-face interviews consisting of open-ended questions …

Impulsivity, Offending, And The Neighborhood : Investigating The Person-Context Nexus, Gregory M. Zimmerman Jan 2009

Impulsivity, Offending, And The Neighborhood : Investigating The Person-Context Nexus, Gregory M. Zimmerman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A key assumption of the traditional trait-based approach to the study of crime is that personality traits cause people to act similarly across a wide array of contexts. This approach has been challenged for its failure to acknowledge differences in the social environments to which individuals are exposed. Similarly, community-level explanations of crime have been criticized for failing to acknowledge that there are important individual differences between criminals and non-criminals. Ultimately, a full understanding of crime requires the consideration of both individual and environmental differences, perhaps most importantly because they may interact to produce offending behavior. In particular, the influence …

Three-Dimensional Hydrogel Cell Culture Systems For Modeling Neural Tissue, John P. Frampton Jan 2009

Three-Dimensional Hydrogel Cell Culture Systems For Modeling Neural Tissue, John P. Frampton

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Two-dimensional (2-D) neural cell culture systems have served as physiological models for understanding the cellular and molecular events that underlie responses to physical and chemical stimuli, control sensory and motor function, and lead to the development of neurological diseases. However, the development of three-dimensional (3-D) cell culture systems will be essential for the advancement of experimental research in a variety of fields including tissue engineering, chemical transport and delivery, cell growth, and cell-cell communication. In 3-D cell culture, cells are provided with an environment similar to tissue, in which they are surrounded on all sides by other cells, structural molecules …

The Psychotherapeutic Use Of Imaginal Dialogue, Jenny Dillman Marks Jan 2009

The Psychotherapeutic Use Of Imaginal Dialogue, Jenny Dillman Marks

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

An investigation of the scholarly literature uncovered deep schisms in the philosophy and theory of imagination stemming from long-standing debates. These debates have often been political in nature, and some originate far back in history. Such differences in philosophy are reflected in the varying ways in which client imagination is used in psychotherapy today. Interventions involving imaginal dialogue are generally among those approaches that have not been adequately studied.

The Effects Of Parental Influences On College Student Normative Perceptions Of Peer Alcohol Use, Emily Susanne Mowry Dobran

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

There has been speculation as to how college students develop normative descriptive and injunctive perceptions of college student alcohol use. One possible explanation is that parents may be "carriers" of the skewed social norm, passing on their misperceptions of alcohol use to their children (Perkins, 2002).

Pathways To Obesity In Women : The Role Of Coping And Emotional Eating, Veronica Nicole Stotts Jan 2009

Pathways To Obesity In Women : The Role Of Coping And Emotional Eating, Veronica Nicole Stotts

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Obesity is a major health crisis in the United States, with approximately two-thirds of the population qualifying as overweight and, of those, almost one half qualifying as obese (CDC, 2007). While there are a myriad of causes of obesity, a great deal of evidence shows that many individuals, and particularly women, eat as a coping response to stress (e.g., Greeno & Wing, 1994). Therefore, one's ability to cope, or the process by which individuals deal with situations that involve stress or threat, may be a factor that contributes to increased body mass index, or BMI, a common measure of obesity. …

Study Of Dynamic Processes In Protein Synthesis Using Heterogeneous Ribosome Specimens, Jie Fu Jan 2009

Study Of Dynamic Processes In Protein Synthesis Using Heterogeneous Ribosome Specimens, Jie Fu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Single-particle reconstruction from cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) images is a widely used technique in studying the structure of macromolecular complexes. This technique allows the visualization of molecules in their native hydrated state. The heterogeneity of two-dimensional projection images, resulting from the co-existence of different states of a macromolecular complex, remains a major obstacle, as it impairs the validity of reconstruction and limits the progress toward higher resolution. On the other hand, co-existing structures, if successfully extracted from a single dataset, can provide valuable information about the equilibrium and dynamics of the biological system being studied.

Investigating The Grief Process Related To Job Loss, Mary P. Donahue

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Adults in the workforce face various psychosocial challenges over the course of their career. One of the most stressful life experiences is the involuntary loss of employment (Holmes & Rahe, 1967). This study explored psychological reactions to involuntary job loss and the overlap between reactions to job loss and bereavement loss. It was hypothesized that the pattern of symptoms reported by a job loss group would not differ significantly from a bereavement group. In addition, a second research question explored three specific contextual variables (social support, work salience, and time since loss) and their correlation with psychological outcomes of the …
